Re:Pointless, since we already have a work-around
Ignoring the actual political process whereby connections to rich corporations and people is a prerequisite for becoming a politician. Is literally ignorant to blame the public for the fact that corporations control the government through lobbyists, It's stupid to assume the general public is responsible when they don't have a real say in any politics (as the Princeton study shows), meanwhile ignoring that the situation was caused by a small and dedicated percentage of very rich and very corrupt people.
Sorry, it's not our fault but it is our problem. "The public sucks", yeah, funny, but also quite wrong. The people in office don't come from "the general public" they come from the elite.

Re:Our democracy is broken
Heaven forbid we should apply the Scientific Method to Governance and rely on repeatable self-evident fact rather than guesses in the dark.
We currently roll out legislation blindly across the entire land, without even a control group to test benefit; Thus saddling us with less than useful laws and encumbering us with regressive programs. Furthermore, the beneficial legislation is easily overturned having collected no hard evidence in its passing demonstrating its usefulness. It's a shame we don't have more planets to run our experiments on, so multiple countries, states, and cities will have to suffice.
You speak of money and influence, nay, I speak of truth. Nature cares not for greed or ideology, what can be demonstrated is truth. It is not impossible to do so. Who cares who has the most influence so long as it is the scientific method and ultimately the nature of reality that would determine the fate of their impulses?
It's true the current corrupt system will resist having such light shined upon it through adoption of the basic rational methods, however, it will be done one way or the other. The cybernetic system that accrues entropy will surely die of its cancer. In the case of the government it will become a single great experiment doomed to fail in despotism or succeed in embracing truth. If not this government, then perhaps the next one, or the one after; However it comes to pass, one day the cycle of revolution will be broken by the experiment of evolution when we adopt a self reinforcing and self corrective system that seeks only to model its workings in accordance with the reality of truth.
The cycle has already began to turn, here in the USA it's proven that we now live in an Oligarchy.

Re:Progressive Fix 101
Ah yes, because the boogie man is important, according to "progressive" Social Justice Weenies, that's why we need the oh-so-progressive anti-first-amendment laws, which deem to classify things like "anti-feminism" (disagreeing with unevidenced ideology) as illegal hate speech. If you think I'm joking, I'm not. That's the sort of shit that "progressives" will try as your country gets more progressive. Forcing women away from jobs involving social activity and into STEM is also oh so importantly progressive.
The term "progressive" has no meaning anymore. The "conservatives" and "progressives" that are representatives only vote the way big businesses' lobbyists tell them to. Thus there is only pro-Oligopolistic and everyone else (who always loses).

Here are LINKS to the TRUTH re: Zuckerberg's Scam
FWD.US is a conspiracy created by Mark Zuckerberg to help drive down IT wages in America.
I have no problem with talented immigrants, but American corporations are LYING about the need for those H1B immigrants due to so-called "shortages" of STEM workers in America, and in the offing they are displacing QUALIFIED American workers with those immigrants (in clear violation of the law). Here are some FACTS to counter Zuckerberg's SPIN around his company's (and others, like MSFT, Cisco, Facebook, Google, etc.) cynical attempt to drive down wages. Just look at the recent policy decision to permit H1B spouses to seek work permits in May, 2015 something; that's 150,000 new workers (most of them professionals - and many with IT skills) into an already challenged IT economy. FWD.US is part of a legal conspiracy to drive down tech wages, under cover of the lie that America does not have sufficient STEM talent. Zuckerberg is shilling for his pals, and working against the American IT worker.

Re:No thanks
Obama was elected twice;
Hey, fool, didn't you know that the votes do nothing? Our representatives do not represent us, We live in a plutocracy. Besides, since the paper trail has been erased and our voting machines are hacked, we might as well just ask the head of CIA or NSA who they want to be the next president (Once CIA head said "Me" another time he said "My son", currently looks like NSA wanted the Obamas and spy-friendly Clintons before that).
Please do not insinuate that I have we citizens have any control over our government. We do not. They have gone rogue, and the only reason we don't revolt is because. "Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed." (from the US Declaration of Independence) We haven't quite suffered enough.
Fortunately our founding fathers gave us legal tools to use to replace our government without resorting to violent revolution (which the Pentagon has been gearing up to prevent, in the name of 'energy crisis' fears). We can fire congress and impeach the illegitimate presidents and judges; Failing this, we have the 2nd amendment.
Interesting thing about the 2nd amendment: Crypto was once classified as a munitions (essentially), so we should have the right to bear Crypto. Failing that, we have shown in the past that the 1st amendment right to publish crypto program source code. So, Obama is going to have to stomp on our 1st amendment rights. You can make it illegal to encrypt my own data, but I can just as simply (and legally) store and publish gigs of random noise (indistinguishable from encrypted data). Good luck outlawing archives of atmospheric noise, or proving that such are not encrypted messages. Also, every communication could potentially contain stenographically encoded data. The message could be in the inflection of my words, or my choice of phrases, even without any encryption system in use. Point being: Outlawing current encryption methods will do absolutely nothing to thwart "terrorist" communications. Tell you what it will do though: Ensure whomever suggests such legislation is never at peace from the deluge of messages from nerds with phones, pens, and keyboards in reach.
The problem is you.
No, the problem is not me. It is possible to have a problem without being the cause of it, moron.

Re: FWD.US lies, just like its founder, Zuckerberg
Undercover of helping immigrant agricultural workers who have long needed a break in America, the American technology sector - lead by Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg - has seen fit to heavily lobby Congress to increase H1-B and other worker visa permits, vastly increasing H1-B visas at a time when very good research shows that there is no shortage of tech workers in America. Zuckerberg has so far succeeded, in the Senate. What is motivating the claim for more H1-B visas?

Mark Zuckerberg is a liar.
Zuckerberg is also a traitor to the American tech worker.
Hey, Mark, MSFT just laid off 18,000 people; Cisco just laid off a bunch; MSFT just the other day closed its research center right down the street from you - filled with gifted coders and brilliance. Mark, there is a MOUND of studies showing NO shortage of STEM works in the US.
Some facts: The H-1B fiasco has cost Americans **$10TRILLION** dollars, since 1975. For anyone who wants to know the truth, read on.

Re:Gots to find more ways to avoid taxes
Things like regulatory capture happen because people don't pay enough attention to their government, not because it is too big.
No, it gets that way because we have no way to enact accountability in a plutocracy. Furthermore we have no legitimate government because the voting systems have been compromised.
There are many people who give a fuck. We just can't do shit about it, and aren't pissed off enough to be calling a vote of no-confidence in congress to scare them.
With votes off the table the only avenue left is activism, but we have entire government machines prepared to deal with activism. They carry on a long history of anti-activist agenda.
I'm sorry, but your comments sound ignorant to me. Have you been living on the same planet I have? It doesn't sound like it. Please educate yourself. The apathetic citizens can be problematic, but in this case the problem clearly lies elsewhere.

Re:Correction
Your failure is in thinking that America exists.
There is no USA. The Democratic Republic nolonger stands. your voting systems have been compromised. You do not have a legitimate government. Habeas Corpus has been eliminated, for fuck's sake.
Now, given that you are aware of these things, you should operate accordingly. That means end to end encryption and storing all your data in a truly decentralized cloud, not on your machine where it can incriminate you.

Corporate outsourcing fraud permeates STEM sector
There is ample evidence that many American corporations have been actively discriminating against American Workers for well over a decade. This is especially true when it comes to STEM work skills. India, China, and Russia have been the main sources of off-shoring (and now, in-shoring). India is the absolute worst, with India's goovernment actively pushing for more H1-Bs because they would rather America hire them than India build proper educational and business infrastructure systems. Indian government is one of the most corrupt on earth (easily as corrupt as some of the worst African states).

Re:Yay for government!!!
IMEI blacklists are common in many countries, including the UK. When a device is stolen the IMEI number is put on the list and carriers reject the device and (potentially) notify investigators.
It's not the IMEI blacklists that I'm worried about. See, if we already have the technology to disconnect devices from the networks, and we have encryption available on the devices, so we really don't need this new "remote kill switch" anti-feature. Folks worried about losing data can use encryption if they want to protect their data, and the remote kill switch doesn't prevent theft because Faraday Cages exist, and black-market thieves will figure out a way to zilch the chip's radio or NoOP the part of baseband/firmware blob that activates the kill switch, etc.
What I'm worried about is getting a "device bricking" standard for all devices so that all they have to do is flip from blacklist to whitelist, and presto they'll only function if they ping corporate/government towers every so often and authenticate with an approved citizen's ID code. Can you say Forced Obsolescence? Intel demonstrated their capability for PCs, and cars now have black boxes standard. The Pentagon has plans to push things like this through for anti-activism purposes.
Here's how you know it's a government job: This non-feature isn't being implemented by customer demand. This isn't something that these folks started offering then got popular and now they're standardizing on, nope. It's something they're making standard whether you want it or not. That's a huge red flag. Isn't this a fucking capitalist country? No, it really isn't. This is anti-consumer collusion of the highest degree. The US Is a plutocracy. Just like Noam Chomsky has been saying for decades. If the USA was a capitalist country then we would allow the market to decide if end users actually want this non-feature whereby the government or your carrier can not just cut off the cell-tower, but brick the devices, cars, computers, etc. to prevent them from being used anywhere. Late on a payment? Oh, they don't just cut off your service, you won't have a device or car to drive to work. Say something "anti-American"? Well, your cell will die on the road and so will your car, then you'll just be black-hooded out of service too. Do consumers really want this? Of course the answer is no. Thus this will be legislated into place "for your own good". Just like censorship and wholesale warrant-less wiretap spying is, and for the same reason as always.
The Stasi would have creamed their pants for some shit like this on machines and typewriters. What soldier would sign up to fight for a country that's doing this shit? If not for uniforms, you wouldn't know which side to fight against: Given only a description of the country's behaviors you'd find us indistinguishable from our supposed worst enemies. If you don't think that's a valid comparison because of some moral high-ground, then you don't know about the Native American genocide or the US eugenics programs. What a sad time to be an American.

True, but bringing 100's of thousands of unqualified tech workers into this country to replace those who are already here is a bit much, don't you think? In fact, it's a direct attack on the American tech worker, no matter his/her ethnic origin. Re:Far enough along to throw money at it?
I just disagree that being in opposition to spending the money means that people don't care about suffering. They may simply care more about suffering in different areas, or simply want to decide for themselves which causes are worthy (e.g. charity).
Again, how do you decide?
I agree the government does waste money, but while $9m of this project may get wasted, at $100m a year it seems like it's going to make progress short of complete fraud.
Also, a lot of scientists, depend on grants like this to feed their families and produce future scientists (yes i'm partially joking), so you know, we don't go back to the dark ages.
Funny you should mention debt because it sounds like you've been listening to the republicans: read & behold... we owe most of the deficit... to ourselves : http://economyincrisis.org/content/whos-behind-deficit-crisis unless you consider the U.S. Treasury more than a government puppet. Our debt is really a good measure of how much money we've injected into the economy which in turn causes the dollar to lose value, but as you can see from the article its all very POV based.

Re:They're not who you think
From the perspective of a friend who lives in Silicon Valley, what is especially upsetting to her about the requested increase in H-1B and other visas (whose blatant goal it is to import more "high-tech" workers) is the support it receives from high profile high-tech leaders like Bill Gates, John Chambers, Eric Schmidt, and other. Those men made billions off the backs of American high tech workers, and they are using deception and outright lies to support their cause to bring in more H-1B workers. Re:Cheating? Free market? how does this work?
Cheating:
- Governmental currency manipulation which is pretty much a certainty.
- "Product Dumping", e.g. selling a product at below production cost (either by simply eating the loss or cutting corners and dumping an inferior, unsafe product) so as to drive competitors out of the market and then price-gouge once you're the only supplier (already seen in some markets where China did, in fact, run US companies out of business)
- Rampant theft of intellectual property - we're not just talking Napster-grade "file sharing" here, we are talking about rampant spying and thievery of patented products and designs. As the last article I link shows, it's not just the US getting burned by the Chinese - this is a major point of concern in the EU as well.
Are you getting some form of a clue now?

Fucking magnets, how do they work?
Boy part of magnet meets girl part of magnet (Physicists use "North" and "South" but that's just because they're trying to obfuscate things for the Republicans).
Then you get this thing called 'magnetic attraction' and they couple together.
Then, after a while, new magnets!
And those stupid Chinese. Thinking this was all some high tech thing that they could monopolize. Pah.
