Re:It's a drug baby ...I emphasize the mild part, because that is what prevents if from being a schedule II drug.
Do you think that caffeine could be considered a Schedule III, Schedule IV or Schedule V drug (see Description of Fed. Schedules)? IMO caffeine could fit somewhere in there. I guess my point is why are some addictive drugs legally supplied to the public by tax paying companies and other drugs are illegally supplied by the criminal element (thus allowing the criminal element to profit without paying taxes)? I don't see anything that could stop the US Govt from making caffeine illegal at any time (except the throngs of caffeine addicts going wild looking for a quick fix).
OT: Your photo gallery is very good. I'm surprised at the good quality and control of the shots you got from the equipment used (i.e.: not a $2kUSD Nikon). Skillfully done.

Re:Before people moan...
I didn't know the exact numbers. I didn't remember for sure about the aspirin, but I thought I remember it had two pain killers plus caffeine. 65mg of caffeine is actually quite a bit. Check out this page for information about caffeine content in drinks.
A 12oz can of Coca-Cola classic contains 34mg of caffeine. A 12oz can of Diet Coca-Cola (I thought it was called "Diet Coke", but that's not what the page says) contains 45mg. Even Mountain Dew is less than the 65mg in Excedrin (the Dew is 55mg).
That and the fact that lots of people will take two pills instead of just one, especially if a headache is more than just a slight one, and you're really getting 130mg, which is right around the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee. -
It's a drug baby ...Description of Fed. Schedules
Schedule II
So exactly what is keeping the DEA from making coffee a Schedule II drug? It has a high rate of recreational use.
Examples : Cocaine, Hydrocodone, Morphine, Opium, Amphetamine, PCP The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse. The drug or other substance has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions. Abuse of the drug or other substance may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.Schedule II drugs may be prescribed with a written prescription from a licensed physician or nurse practitioner.

Re:Reminds me of my job...
"He's management that's forgotten to take its Ritalin"
just to correct a small factual error that alot of people seem to make, you do know that for any adult that takes ritalin its actually a stimulant and would actually cause Kirk to behave that way right?
ritalin
thats why im always horrified when i see anyone greater than a teenager taking it, unless they are taking it recreationally of course :) A better statement would be " hes management that forgot to take his bong hit " or " take his valium " or something. -

Iboga / Ibogaine
Just start dishing out Tabernanthe Iboga (Ibogaine in the USA), and drug addictions will be a things of the past. Good times, and no more heroin!
-
Re:Not too bad if EuropeanGuess what? Morphine in general is the same thing as heroin. - True, they are almost exactly the same, and heroin gets metabolized into morphine by the body anyway.
You can be on morphine all your life with little physical damage - True
but if you go off it the withdrawal can kill you - False. It makes you feel deathly sick, but it is only a feeling. People only die during heroin withdrawal if they are already very unhealthy for other reasons.
3,4-MDMA began as a medically-purposed drug, primarily for psychological purposes - Actually it was created in 1912 by Merck Pharmaceuticals who did nothing with it.
but became schedule A over here because it is highly addictive, both psychologically and physically - Physically addictive? You obviously don't have a clear understanding of physical addiction. If you take MDMA every day, the drug will stop making you feel good because of a combination of tolerance and low serotonin reserves. AFIAK a physically addictive phenylethylamine has never been discovered. The psychological addiction part can be true though.
and causes real and permanent damage from the very first use - Again, untrue. People are dying to find proof of this but really if there are any changes at all, they aren't significant unless you really abuse the stuff. You might want to check this out.

reagan mixreminds me of these pro-drug reagan mixes. What is amazing about these kinds of mixes is how realistic they sound. These were done years ago and aren't quite as polished as the rush ones.
short version:http://www.erowid.org/psychoactives/humor/ humor_reagans_prodrug.mp3
long version:http://compass-rose.satanosphere.com/~bhus ton/reagan_drug_promo.mp3RON: Nancy's joining me because the message this evening is not my message, but ours. Despite our best efforts, shortages of marijuana are now being reported. From the early days of our administration, Nancy has been abusing marijuana on a daily basis, and her personal observations and efforts have given her such dramatic insights that I wanted her to share them with you this evening.
NANCY: I yearn to find a way to help share the message that drugs open your eyes to life, to see it in the vivid colors that God gave as a precious gift to His children.
RON: And drug abuse is NOT a crime. Drugs and excessive alcohol are used by former Attorney General Meese.
NANCY: Drugs help us create love, and hope and trust and confidence.
RON: Being friends to others is the best way of being friends to ourselves.
NANCY: It's up to us to change attitudes, and simply enjoy life to the fullest.
RON: And in the most important area, individual use, we see progress. The US military has more than tripled the use of drugs among it's personnel since 1980. Tonight, I can report to you the Vice President Bush smokes marijuana regularly. And there's one more thing; Nancy and I are hooked on heroin.
NANCY: Each of us was once strung out on several drugs.
RON: Here in the White House, drugs are a constant temptation. But we still have much to do. Our goal is to expand drug trafficking at all levels of government and in the private sector. Help us. -

Anyone hoping to try this out, please, please, please first read William White's DXM FAQ.

You forgot 5MEO-DMT and 2C-T-7
5MEOwid.org/chemicals/5meo_dmt is a 15 minute mind blowing trip trip (great for lunch hours ;)... honestly though, I never did the lunch hour thing.
2C-T-7, well it's just great.
Also you can get LSA (an LSD derivitive) from Hawiian Baby Woodrose seeds or from morning glory seeds.
And let us not forget good old san pedro cactus which is another mescaline source -
PsychedelicsHah! I'd expect to find this article on Smokedot but not here. But oh well, while there's an intelligent audience:
LSD was huge in the 60's and 70's but has greatly diminished in recent years. This decline is due primarily to incredibly reduced availability on the black market. LSD is not easily produced, and the punishment for possession of even small amounts resulted in ridiculous amounts of jail time. Because of these factors youth these days hardly have the opportunity to influence their mind with LSD. This doesn't mean that kids these days don't trip, they've just found other ways. Some of the modern popular psychedelics are:
5-MeO-DiPT (Foxy) - Similar to LSD with some of the "rolling" effects of MDMA (ecstacy)
2C-I - A trippy phenethylamine
5-MeO-AMT - Very potent tryptamine
2C-T-2 - Very powerful hallucinogen
What makes these "new" drugs so interesting is that many have not yet been scheduled by the DEA. Although a few on the list above were recently added to Schedule 1 by an emergency scheduling process. Unscheduled drugs are simply chemicals that can be legally possessed and sold and therefore are done so over the internet. A lot of modern "drug dealers" buy these chemicals cheap on the internet and sell them in their locality. A couple popular distributors are:
Omega Fine Chemicals
Just to give you guys an idea of what kids are up to these days

Re:Fear of mind altering drugs.
All of your questions (and more) can be answered right here. But I'll answer these ones directly:
-Getting the real thing? Only an issue if you choose to do shrooms, potency varies *greatly* between patches. LSD is always returns consistant results. On the other hand, the fungus gets you about 6 hours total, while acid is 12.
-Music/environment/people? Tough one. Complex subject. I personally like the following: Pink Floyd/outside in the woods (no one else around plus nature is a great setting)/1-2 other people max who are tripping with me as well
-Things going bad? Always remember you have complete control of the situation. At times you might lose yourself (you will if it's a good/strong enough trip) but keep in mind you can change the way the trip is going at any time. If you feel funny and don't like something almost guaranteed one of three things will change it: Change the music, change the lighting, or go to the bathroom.
Since you mentioned you have smoked before, I highly recommend doing so right after popping whatever substance you choose. It will make the voyage from reality much smoother and not quite as abrupt. It sorta smacks you hard and fast if you do it sober.
Only other advice I can give is: "relax, don't panic and enjoy it". Try to take your mind off of what you just did after you eat them so you're not thinking about it all the time. I like to take my watch off and if you're out in nature, take a walk somewhere that will last at least 30 mins, preferably an hour (you'll start to feel it definately by then). -
Re:Ah, LSD
Very good advice but I'll take it a step further - Read the FAQ before you do. It will make the experience infinitely better, and if you follow it very closely your chances of having a bad trip will be next to none.

Highly recommended
Although I have not read those books, I would highly recommend Erowid as an amazing resource for all kinds of information. Anything from chemistry, to religion/psychology, to laws and culture surrounding various substances. Seriously, even if you have the slightest curosity (don't we all?) then check it out. I used to keep a printed out copy of one of Erowid's FAQ's (*very* good I might add) on my coffeetable while living in my fraternity house and still in college. It was amazing the wide range of people who read and found it interesting, most of them had zero experience with those substances asides from the general fallacies.
That being said, please be responsible with whatever activities to choose to partake in. -

More information...
Very interesting to see this on slashdot.
Lysergically Yours is a good book, but is nothing compared to some of the other books available out there.
I would suggest TIHKAL and PIHKAL by Alexander and Ann Shulgin
That is, if you're interested in the chemistry... but for more casual psychonaughts, I would explore Erowid for information.
The best part both TIHKAL and PIHKAL's more interesting and (knowledgable) parts are available for FREE online via those two links. Have fun, and remember, psychoactives can be a valuable learning experience but to anything good there's equal if not more bad. Read everything with logic and don't go and turn out like Huxley. -

Drugs.be it alcohol, marijuana, or some other form of mind-bending, drugs are a great way to get party-minded geeks off their asses.
i'm a mac guy with plenty of windows PC skills, and i've gotten really, really tired of fixing peoples' piece of shit computers because windows is a massive security hole. most things involve spyware, viruses, trojans, little green men, steve ballmer playing with wires, etc... these aren't hard to fix (not like a borked partition map or such) but they're just a pain. now that i'm living on a college campus, all the naive users out there are clamoring for help as soon as they smell geek.
bitterly, i resolved to not waste my time unless there's a pretty (AND SINGLE, wtf) girl or some nice dank involved. mac users get all the help they need because, well, fuck windows.

Caffeine Content of Beverages -
NYT doesn't know Guarana = Caffeine
All contain caffeine, guarana or a combination of both. (Guarana, a berry found in the Amazon, has a stimulant effect similar to caffeine's.) Some use ginseng as well, for extra stimulation.
Maybe that is because guarana is caffeine? Actually, guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a plant, which according to Erowid contains 5% caffeine from which it derives its stimulant effects. There is no alternative to caffeine named guarana. Wikipedia's article on guarana has more information. Yet more misinformation from the Times. -
Re:Arabica vs. Robusta, Dark vs. Light
I know you are joking, but PLEASE don't eat too much caffeine. Here's an experience by someone who took 16 pills:
my sister and i decided to get what we thought might be a 'high' one night in december and nearly died. i decided to take 16 caffeine pills with a 200 mg amount of caffeine in each pill (equivalent to 2 cups of coffee) and drink a diet coke. my sister liked the idea because she thought it might be like speed. it was like hell. i shit three times i peed like a race horse about three times. i also thought maybe consuming some good h2o and some nourishing food might help but everything that went into my body came back up. i had an intense headache and body temperature that seemed to range from boiling to arctic freezing. i reached a point where i could not stop tremoring or shaking and my heart was pounding out of my chest. i really thought i was going to die. my sister had taken half the amount that i did and saw what i was going through. i had called an ambulance and was carried out in a stretcher and just about bounced out out of it from being unable to keep still. on the way to the hospital i blacked in and out and the blackouts got longer and longer. i was given numerous amounts of shots and hooked up to hooplas of equipment and was told to drink charcoal or i would die. my sister, i later found out went through the same thing just when i was hooked up to all of the monitors and what not. we were both told that we could have died from the amount of caffeine that we had taken.
my reason for telling this to whomever is reading it would be, be aware of what how much something can do to you. i just thought i would be very awake. it turns out i was almost asleep permanently. -
Re:How about wetware hacking?
I get my info on wetware hacking here.
As I'm sure someone will complain if I don't mention it, I will warn you that the Web site is very poorly designed. However, if you're willing to dig for it, there is a wealth of information in the Erowid Psychoactive Vaults on how to use drugs without getting killed, which drugs to use for what ends, and where to look for more information on a given drug.
Happy tripping! -
Re:The Long Answer
Well, here's what I got when I Googled for "Caffeine lethal dose".
I just cannot believe some people were sick enough to inject this into defenseless animals for the only sake of evaluating how much they'd take before dying. -
Well...
LD50 (Lethal Dose*) of caffein is 192 mg/kg in rats
* LD50 = dose which will kill 50% of the tested animals.
It is estimated that fatal doses for humans are between 1 and 4 grams of caffeine, depending on body weight and tolerance.
we'll say that each cup of coffee has 80mg of, so that 80mg * 100 cups divided by 1000mg in a gram, and that comes out of 8 grams of caffein you'd be injesting in 24 hours..while 1-4 grams could kill you if taken at once. IMHO you shouldn't even attempt to drink 100 cups...if you dont die you'll probably be very sick at the least.

Re:Apply Shrinkage to the Buckyballs
If you take a piece of a BB that is one hex ring and an adjacent penta ring, and attach simple radicals to the dangling bonds, you get all sorts of interesting molecules, most of which are biologically active.
Not just biologically, but psychotropically active. Much of this effect is due to the way they jam receptors designed for similar neurotransmitters, and how long it takes to clear them.

I hope that we will one day indeed design rather than blindly search. We're centainly on the road to it. But then again, I heard the same line about designed drugs coming soon when I started studying biology, and that was, hmm, about 10 years ago.
Designed drugs have already happened. They just happened in areas you probably aren't studying -- namely, the pharmacology of psychedelia.
Phenethylamines I have Known and Loved, by Alexander and Ann Shulgin.
MDMA came from efforts such as this, and would have been discovered by the above effort even if it hadn't yet been studied (and widely used).

*sigh*
i still dont believe they are giving hard drugs to kids like that. I have been an experimental drug user for years and ive done LOTS of types of drugs. Ritilin is speed. I have also heard this expressed as ritilin is speed after puberty hits. sadly, most people dont take their kids off of it in highschool.
YES it will get you better grades. YES it will help you focus. But i have seen people that have been on perscription ritilin for 10+years and they have some very weird issues. It makes you just as sketchy as any amphetamine, and the long term effects are down right scary. Everything from facial ticks to hyper sensitivity to constant feelings of restlessness - ive seen them all. Not to mention that the people who I know who were on perscription ritilin are VERY much more likely to drift into every other sort of chemical drug.
Chemicals are the worst way to get high and the only reason that they are considered "safe" for longterm use is that the pharmasutical industry has beat the government into submision. Its scary when i watch american TV and every 3rd ad is an ad for a drug that promises a "brave new world" of feeling good and "correct" all the time. this is the root issue. Back in the day(tm) people ACCEPTED that they were different from one another. Depression, lack of focus, listlessness and an excess of energy were just normal traits. I do not for a second buy the line that doctors just didnt know how to diagnoise and treat these things before and thats why we are only seeing them now.
To deny people to feel depressed or anxious or restless is to DENY YOURSELF HUMANITY. These unfavourable societial attitudes should be treated with societal treaments. Kids too hyper? maybe you should stop letting the blipvert TV entertain them and do some parenting.
Its so sad that what was considered a personal quirk or mannerism 100 years ago is now a disease that you have to pay 500$ a month to cure. Of course these diseases will never be cured: because they are not diseases but things that make people different from eachother.

Hm. On the off chance this is a serious post:
In this context, it's a kind of soda (pop, soft drink, carbonated sugar water). It's a lurid yellow-green, probably supposed to be citrus flavored, and is notable as one of the stereotypical beverages for all-night computer geek hacking sessions due to relatively high caffeine content.
