Re:My Right to a Predator Drone
Well, considering when this historical document was written, the State Governors could call up a militia from the able-bodied population. When you were called to duty, you were also expected to bring your long arm with you. So yes, the common man would have expected to have access to cutting-edge military technology of the time.
In modern times, we restrict sales of certain items to government or law enforcement agencies only. That's consistent with maintenance of a standing army (I'm not expected to bring my long arm and ammunition to boot camp should I enlist.) Unfortunately, there's a huge middle ground of contestable items - from machine guns to suppressors - that initiate frothing emotional debates from very opinionated folks. It doesn't help when BATFE classifies copper pot scrubbers and shoe laces as "firearms." -
Re:Sure....Yeah, keeping people hungry is also SOP, since hungry folks don't put up that much of a fight. Ask the North Koreans. I don't think there's mass hunger in Venezuela yet, but with a command economy it's a logical step.
And in case we don't think it could happen here, from Sarah Brady's own mouth:

Re:Makes no sense
So someone points out five examples of serious bias by non-Fox networks, only two of which apparently ended in apologies... and the response isn't "yea, they're all biased", but rather "Fox doesn't apologize"?
Simply googling "fox network apology" show's that it isn't entirely true that Fox never apologizes: here's one example, and another.
I never watch Fox News or MSNBC or any other TV news show, and I'm not defending Fox. But it seems like if your vehement argument for superiority boils down to "my partisan biased news show is somewhat more likely to apologize for its excesses when it gets caught than yours", you might want to be a little less proud of that.
And yet, the original comment gets modded flamebait, and both of the retorts get modded up...

Re:Too Often, Killed His Dog
This article would suggest that police are not trained on how to deal with dogs. They usually carry mace, tasers, etc, but it seems they almost always go straight for the gun. I'm not sure what kind of training most police receive regarding handling situations involving pets, but I'd argue that this is most likely a case of Hanlon's razor.

Re:Historically, all politicians like to impose ru
What you seem to be missing is a moderate left party. Where is the American party that isn't aiming for communism, but would increase taxes on the rich, using the money to pay for improved infrastructure and social services (e.g. public transport, more money/help for the unemployed or low income people, single-parent families, investment in bad bits of cities, etc)?
That sort of thing is pretty much the platform of the Democratic party in the US. However, in fairness, there is very little legislation that passes in the United States at the national level, or in most states, that doesn't have at least some degree of support from both parties. The Republican party is also for improving infrastructure, and social services - when necessary. There are disagreements as to how to pay for things, how long they last, etc. One thing that many Europeans have a hard time with is that American political parties, at least the Democrats and Republicans, tend to be "big tent" parties that have a fairly wide range of political views - the parties both have their conservative and liberal wings. This is somewhat less true than in the past, say 30 years ago.
The Republicans aren't far right, they are center-center right. I don't think even in a European context they would be truly far right. There is one notable difference between the American and European right. The American right rejected the far right in the 50s and 60s, so it has withered. The Left in America hasn't done that fully.
The Republicans reject authoritarianism, racism (despite the nonsense you read on Slashdot), and are not anti-immigrant. They do want all immigration to be legal, however. As things stand now, approximately 10% of the population of Mexico has crossed into the United States, almost all illegally. That really can't be a good thing for all the things it implies.
As to your other questions -
I don't believe that the National Socialists have won any elections ever, although they do run for office from time to time. The various Communist parties put people on the ballot, but I doubt they've won much unless it was unopposed. Communists have been appointed to high government positions, however - Van Jones, for example. The Socialists have won office here and there. There is a US Senator who is a socialist, and the city of Milwaukee (a major city) has elected a socialist party mayor in years past. The state of Minnesota also elected a Reform Party governor several years ago - Jesse Ventura, the actor and former wrestler. I believe Green Party members have won local office as well.
So the United States truly does have the full range of political parties in it, but the American electorate is drawn more towards the center. The national election system helps reinforce that tendency. I don't think that is a bad thing.

Re:Hansen Must Go
Back in the Kyoto talks, we were TOLD that if no action was taken, then the point of no return was something like 2007. Well? Based on that "science", nothing we do can help anyway.
We get predictions like that all the time. If there's anything we learned from the climategate emails, it's that a lot of the scientists working on this problem are not working in good faith.
The solution, I think, is to work on things that will help us anyway, even if AGW turns out to not be a problem. For example, improving electric car technology will be good for America, whether AGW is a big ball of hype, or whether it's real. Same with fusion electricity. We can work on those things. -
Re:Wait, wtf, NASA again?!?
Just turn the wheel all the way in one direction before you remove the keys, that way you'll only go in a nice, safe circle, like this: http://www.examiner.com/strange-news-in-national/elderly-south-florida-woman-run-over-by-her-own-car-1
-
Re:6 by 20
They key is to mimic a car wheel. Just think of where the wheel would be if a car were to stop over the loop. An upright wheel will do as well as laying the bike down, if the position is correct. And yeah, I was referring to the octogon ones, they usually have a circle etched over them. The only rectangular ones I have seen are these. They can be triggered by getting your wheel over any of the sides. I prefer the center one, as I would be triggering both he loops. If you see a different one, just mimic a car wheel, and it will certainly work.
Slightly tilting you bicycle to one side, also helps. Its induces more changes in current than standing upright and being still.

Hollywood "Star Wackers"
Randy Quaid blows whistle on crime against celebrity Targeted Individuals
October 31, 2010
Deborah Dupre
Human Rights Examiner- http://www.examiner.com/human-rights-in-national/randy-quaid-blows-whistle-on-celebrity-targeted-individuals
- http://www.examiner.com/human-rights-in-national/deborah-dupre"In a Vancouver press conference, actor Randy Quaid described part of the typical plight of a Targeted Individual, naming eight close Hollywood associates he believes were targeted and killed. The targeting system is highly organized; involving people at all levels of society including in banks, the Department of Justice, and even family members who are are often co-opted to help destroy the innocent target, as Quaid has learned first-hand.
From a written statement, Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon's Vacation movies and Brokeback Mountain star, Quaid explained the same organized criminal activities hundreds of Targeted Individuals have reported to Dupré. Each of these activities are designed to ruin the targets' careers, their finances, their well-being - and thus silence them.
Such targeting can and often does last decades. Mr. and Mrs. Quaid have been targeted twenty years according to his statement on October 29.
Quaid's brother and his attorney are part of the conspiracy to neutralize him, as he explained at his press conference that followed a Canadian immigration hearing. Most people are too naive and or arrogant to believe a close family member could be involved in such covert manipulations that ruin lives.
Both Randy Quaid and his wife Evi have sought refuge from the targeting in Canada, as though the criminal cabal is not transnational. In Canada, the couple was jailed and then released, possibly part of the typical harassment treatment targets get from officials.
In the 2nd part of the press conference video, sobbing, Quaid asked how many of the reporters have known someone that died suddenly and mysteriously in the past five years, then naming his eight associates that all met untimely deaths, "Hollywood wacked." (See Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_574552&v=ppTpSb_u7hA)
"We believe there to be a malignant tumor of star whackers in Hollywood," said Quaid.
Quaid named Heath Ledger, Chris Penn and David Carradine as targeted and killed.
IMDb reports on Quaid's targeting offers little to no validation of his claims, typical of mainstream press on the topic of Targeted Individuals.
He also names others he believes are on a hit-list: Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears,
"Merciless slandering, killing career and killing the target for profit" are among what Quaid hihglights as part of the hit-list agenda - each familiar to targeted individuals reporting to Dupré."

Re:Screw NG, go Ethanol.
Oil doesn't get subsidies.
Yes, they do. Where did you hear such a ridiculous fallacy? The Cato Institute?
And most of the time, it doesn't even get tax breaks.
Wait, are you talking about the substance itself? Surely no one would intentionally be that obtuse... anyway, oil companies most definitely receive tax breaks, to the tune of billions every year.
Most of those go to exploration, and drilling.
Well gee, Wally, care to explain why companies who break their own records for pure profit every single quarter actually need those "exploration" tax breaks?
But hey, don't let reality worry you.
Doesn't seem like I'm the one having trouble with the concept...
Feed-in-tariff ringing any bells?
No, since the term has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of oil subsidies.

Re:Screw Megapixels
True, the good thing about recording shooting more than you need is that you can crop though, I've been reading some such thoughts about the Nikon D800 (36MP, $3000 camera) and the JVC GY-HMQ10 (4K, $5000 video camera). Need an extra 2x zoom on that camera? Crop it to 9MB and you still have a very useful picture. Is what you're trying to film moving to erratic for you to stay on target? Zoom back out and crop to 1080p in post-production. Not a cheap solution but if you're can't get another take, it might be worth it.

Re:Supremacy Clause
The federal government originally hadn't mandated that the TSA be in every airport. In fact, the author of the bill creating the TSA encouraged airports to opt-out of using the TSA. Unfortunately, shortly after that article was written, the head of the TSA put a freeze on allowing any more opting-out from the airports. Even so, the Senate passed a bill a few weeks ago that would reinstate the practice. So it seems somewhat inevitable that this is the direction things are heading now. I.e. that the crazy pendulum swung far enough one way and is starting to come back towards the center now.
Alternatively, if the TSA continues to be forced on the airports, their policies aren't law, last I checked. IANAL, so this is likely wishful thinking, but stick with me:
1) If an action being done by the TSA (e.g. the new scanners) is dictated by TSA policy
2) And there are no federal laws on the books mandating the action
3) And a state passes a bill barring the action
4) That said action would be illegal in that state, since no federal law exists to trump the state's lawAnd if we assume that my wishful thinking is just that and nothing more, a state could still try their hand at creating laws like these. At the very least, they'd be able to force the issue to a head by pushing it into the legal system. The state laws may eventually get struck down, but the statement being made would likely be sufficient to get some changes made.

Re:No meat to this story
Soooo...speaking the truth is bad if it doesn't fit with your perception bubble? "All go to hell except cave 76! oh and Google!~ Rah!" please. Name a single thing the guy wrote that wasn't factual. Billion dollar web advertising company? simply look up their SEC filings and it says in black and white they make more than 96% of their income from ads, and they are a multi-billion dollar company, so check there. And Google having a history of privacy violations? I would say that's a pretty big yes. So I'm sorry if his post breaks your perception bubble but truth is truth.
As for TFA give me a damned break, we've tried that crap over and over and over and over its sucked the big wet titty. ChromeOS is going exactly nowhere, service across the country is spotty so good luck if you have anything important due soon and your connection takes a big crapola, and finally the performance sucks. As another wrote the future is rich native apps that have the ability but not the mandatory requirement of web integration. This way you have the speed of native and can choose whether or not to use the cloud for syncing or backups or getting the latest data.

Wikileaks considering move 'truly offshore,' where only maritime law applies
And investors who might consider buying a boat for the purpose must have so much money that it is likely they already own at least one boat that could do the job. In addition, of course, boat can be hired or rented.
Apparently you've never heard of shipping companies. Ship the servers to a port. Put the servers on a boat.
Thank you again for your faux insight.

They don't work and are not safe!
It's funny but more than one year since the UCSF letter of concern was issued many of the points have been largely ignored by our government. The TSA continues to roll them out and gets more funding for junk that doesn't work and creates more risks in terms of possibly damaging health issues than it protects. There has been no independent study, there has not been any proof that these make our skies safer and people still get additional screening in most cases after going through these contraptions. I'm sorry, but if there has ever been a white elephant in our government, it's these devices and a full, unbiased, study of the health effects and security benefits must be undertaken. Until that time, turn them off and give everybody a pat-down. That's the only way somebody can be assured that the traveling public at least from the traveling public's perspective is safe.
Even after using one of these scanners, the TSA agents failed to stop somebody who had a fire arm. While the dipshits were looking at the screens and confirming what they saw, the person left the screening area. If that one incident doesn't show how screwed up the DHS is and the TSA, then I don't know what does.
It's time to de-fund the TSA and start putting some reasonable "sanity checks" back into place where air travel safety is concerned.
-
Re:not detained at all...
I could have sworn that, in previous cases (not involving a US Senator), people were told that, if the scan found something odd, you could either accept the pat-down or be arrested...I wonder what would happen if a non-Congressfolk tried doing exactly what Rand Paul did. Would they be arrested for refusing the pat down? Would they be kicked out of the airport with a police escort?
You can stop wondering:
Alaska State Legislature member refuses pat-down.
John "Don't touch my junk!" Tyner refuses pat-down.
56-year old rape victim refuses pat-down.
YMMV. IIRC, TSA dropped charges against Tyner, but I don't believe the woman in Austin, TX was quite as lucky. To date, there are no politicians who have refused to allow themselves to be molested, excuse me, I mean "groped", err..."searched"...by TSA who have even had charges filed against them, much less who have actually been prosecuted. I guess the quote is true: "You know the score, Deckard. If you ain't cop, you're little people." -

Re:Dec 27, 1978 -13.6 C +7.5 FSorry, textbooks are not written by scientists doing research. In fact, all of america's textbooks are written in conservative Texas -- there's been many articles about the inaccuracies they put into things. Simply put, when one wants to learn about a topic, one goes to a proper scientific text, not a schoolbook. Nor do your anecdotal memories of what you think were in a textbook when you were a child stand scrutiny, as confirmation bias causes people to purposely forget things that challenge their worldview, and only remember things that support it. I don't trust my belief on the world based on your anecdotal memory.
try this and this and most especially this one which talks about the specific numbers of articles.
Science always has conflicting results, it is the consensus that is more important, and it's quite obvious to me what it was then, and what it is now. The same damn thing.

In fact in Africa, the US isn't nearly as bad as some European nations, such as France and England, which still haven't gotten over the idea that these countries are their colonies. The US has been much worse in its treatment of South American nations, however.
Furthermore, I'm not denying that rich nations don't provide money for infrastructure or education, or provide funding to NGOs that provide these things. But the money quite often gets in the hands of corrupted governments, which are helped or put in power by the West. There are a few genuinely helpful programs, but these seem to be exception.
Some citations for the West plundering the resources of poor countries, aided by corrupt governments they support and/or put in power, while the people starve (or worse) :

You may say, well, these are almost all examples of corporations exploiting people, not governments. But let's not forget that these corporations are based in Western countries and have an enormous influence on their politics, the whole "revolving door" thing.

Re:Does he get to keep it?
Here in the U.S.(and within a few miles of where I was working when it happened!) a military pilot student bailed from his malfunctioning F-18, leaving it crashing into 2 houses and almost singlehandedly wiping out a family.
The military offered them an undisclosed sum, probably a few million bucks, and they said, "Fuck you, we want 56 million, see your asses in court." And they'll probably get at least half of that considering the string of errors led to the crash. -
Re:Consumption tax on whose backs?
Lets talk American labor. The auto companies said, all over the news programs when they were going bankrupt a few years ago, that their labor rate is $78 / hr. That's because of all the benefits and the retirees' expenses. And here:
we learn that it takes 30 - 33 labor hours for the big 3 here to build a car. That's about $2500 in labor.
The Fair Tax people, long before this article came out, have calcualted that, on average, about 22% of the price of all American goods is composed of income tax expenses incurred by American companies manufacturing things here. That's corporate income tax, employees' individual income tax that makes their labor more expensive, that also includes the payroll tax that the employees pay at 15.3% for medicare and social security that again, makes their labor more expensive, the embedded income taxes in all their raw materials and machine tools and everything else they buy, and so forth.
Imagine now a $40K SUV. It is reasonable to expect that the embedded income tax expense is around $8800. Compare that with the $2500 that goes into the labor of building the $40K SUV. An SUV would get dramatically cheaper with income tax gone as opposed to making slaves of all the workforce and shafting the retirees of all their pay.
As for the manufacturing coming back, a survey commissioned by Bill Archer, former house ways and means chair, asked 500 foreign CEO's what their reaction would be if the USA passed the Fair Tax. 400 of them said they would build their next factory in the USA. The other 100 said they would move their company HQ to the USA.
As for the Factcheck people, imagine how long they took to consider this question, and then note the testimony of 2 PHD economists familiar with the Fair Tax before the house ways and means committee earlier this year:
http://waysandmeans.house.gov/Calendar/EventSingle.aspx?EventID=252676
If you scroll down to the bottom, bring up the video, and jump to the 1 hr and 36 minute mark, you find that these economists, under oath and threat of perjury, have testified that everyone's lifetime tax outlook goes down EXCEPT the very rich, who will pay more than they have been paying, because the Fair Tax hits them harder because of all their spending outstripping what their current tax burden is, which is greatly avoided through loopholes that they're very good at exploiting.
These PHD's have spent quite a lot of effort modeling the Fair Tax, and I am much more likely to take what they say about the Fair Tax bringing back prosperity rather than a website like FactCheck who, again, likely considered this for a couple days to a week.
And although the economists didn't say explicitly, imagine how many rich just don't have income taxes because they don't work. They sit around and break off a piece of cash from a very large pile of it that belongs to them and live on that each year, as well as the taxes on capital gains which is necessarily much lower than the income tax rates, or you'll kill invenstment if you try to raise them.
And that's the point - the income taxes are and have been killing the US industry for 50 years, ever since the US lost its consumer electronics to Japan starting in the 60's, and are losing the intellectual employment to places like India even today. When it _all_ goes overseas, we'll have just the thing that absolutely MUST be

so
Yes, the US isn't the shining beacon of hope, freedom and liberty it thinks it is. But it is still a very, very far cry from the autocratic and kleptocratic country that is Russia.
is that why police departments all over usa had beaten down occupy protesters in a move coordinated by FBI ?

Re:old news
You got modded troll, but you made me curious, because I seemed to remember hearing these before, too. Doing a google search of "global warming irreversible YYYY" I came up with these:
From 2009, Obama has 4 years to save the world
From 2009, global warming is now irreversible, study says(also discussed on slashdot)
From 2005, past the point of no return.
Also from 2005, Global warming irreversible.
From 2004, Damage from warming becoming irreversible.
From 1989, We have a 10 year window to fix the problem.
What do you think of that?
odd I hear crickets.......
