People visit for all kinds of reasonsIsn't Tan just doing on a very small scale what Eric Schmidt, Larry Page et al are doing? I don't imagine that all those disparate people are there because of a genuine interest in Google, or because Google thinks they have important wisdom to pass on (despite the talks by some). They are trophies. And I would expect paid trophies at that. At least Tan isn't paying them for their picture. That makes him cooler than either Google or their celebrities picking up appearance fees. He is the only one who genuinely wants to be there.
Wow, that's cynicism.
And you're completely wrong. We get folks over all the time who aren't paid trophies. We get people over who just want to have lunch, see what the place is about, etc. There really are people who come over because a genuine interest in Google. It's a cool place, and has a lot of "different" things about it. People want to see it. (What's really funny is the new college grads with their parents. You can always spot them. I'd say we have several hundred pairs of parents a week walking around. I've never worked at a place that had so many visitors, and I'm guessing there's more to it than a free lunch.)
The other day I was walking through a building and saw Robin Williams. He was just standing there with an employee looking at the GeoDisplay. Why? Wanted to see the place (he was dressed differently than in Chade-Meng's picture, so I guess it was another visit). Another common one is people over at Shoreline Amphitheatre coming over to have a look. I've seen all sorts of celebrities wandering around because of that.
I think the people who give talks (Clinton, Friedman, McCain) get whatever their normal appearance fee is, but I don't know for sure. It would only make sense that we'd pay them like with any other speaking engagement, since we do think they have wisdom to pass on. And it's kind of weird that you'd bag on Google for paying someone their fee for coming to talk to us. You feel that universities and talk shows and whatever should also get the same treatment? It's a pretty standard thing, you know...

I'm with those guys ...
I have no idea what this guy does or what his individual talents are (thank you, nytimes), but this seems somewhat reprehensible hobby to pursue ?
I mean, it's not that I'm not guilty of the I'm with those guys syndrome, but I've felt guilty for having gone out of my way to get a picture with Tanenbaum or Linus.
I've often wondered why I did it and can only put it down as "Celebrity by Association". And made a mental note to be in the same frame as these people by effort & hard work rather than by mere geographical coincidence.

Give them a break, will you?
They started making deals, they're making open source and seeking license approval, they're saying they will interoperate -- and they try to look more Linux-friendly.

No need to be afraid... -
SpeakEasy does this too.
Don't believe their "unlimited usage for power users" lie. They not only terminated me, but tried to get me to pay the $300 early termination fee when *THEY* terminated *ME*. In their case, they specifically told me (after a few months of what I consider to be harasssment) "download more than 100G, and we'll cut you off". This was $90/month "fancy" internet that I bought, when I could have gotten Verizon FIOS (fiber) for $40. I even had a pre-sales chat, where they lied to me and told me I could download 100% of my bandwidth 100% of the time without ever getting terminated. I took screenshots, because I had a feeling Speakwasy was lying to me. And indeed, SpeakEasy WAS lying to me.

Had to talk them into a reboot!
I love this comment:
After we landed in Orlando I talked the flight crew into rebooting the entire system so I could take this picture.
Despite the hostile shake rattle and roll environment, you know they mostly reboot when they want to not at random. Notice how it was not a big deal for them to oblige the picture taker? They knew all of them would come back up.
-
A bootup shot.
see here (not sure if this is fake).
-
And here's a picture of the reboot..
Enjoy a few pics here. Incidentally "Song airlines" were the first ones Delta put these on. Song went out of business (there's a Frontline episode you can watch about it) and the Song planes were turned back into Delta planes. Now all the Delta planes are scheduled to have the inflight video stuff too.

Why does AT&T use such huge cabinets?
Verizon's FIOS is in my area. I won't subscribe because I hate Verizon with a passion, but I've got photos of their cabinets and they look nothing like at&t's cabinets.

Re:The Answer is Yes
TROLL ALERT
It is unbelievable propaganda to equate Iran to Nazi Germany. Israeli disinfo and psyops (MEMRI) deliberately mis-translate stories, and the lapdog media in the US and UK eat it up.
Here is the country, and the people, that you smear as "enemy". -

Re:I have the solutionA common test back in the day would be to play a master mix through the shittiest AM radio type
gear, or a 6x9 speaker and see how it sounded, since 90% of everyone would be hearing it on similar
gear. If you look in an issue of Mix magazine, you'll see that nearly every professional studio has a pair of Auratone (see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drmotte/221077015/ for a picture) monitors sitting on top of the mixing console. These are single speaker monitors that are used for "worst case scenario" listening.
Slightly about the Auratones are the Yamaha NS10 near-field monitors which are basically a glorified pair of bookshelf speakers.
So, it's not just "back in the day". -

Re:It's a serious problem
Covert to black and white with curves in Photoshop or Lightroom and throw a spanner in the SUPPER BRIGHT SATURATED colors works. BTW digital cameras even moderately expensive DSLR are set way too oversaturated to catch a good dynamic light range to look "good" on cheesy plant macros. Check out my swimming in light group on flickr where I try to fight this trend:

Re:Bestest. Review. EVAR.
I thought that comment was key, too.
So I incorporated it into a (requested by a third party) LOLCat Pivar.
Because, apparently, I don't have enough time on my hands. -
Re:Bestest. Review. EVAR.I love this quote:
The doodles in this book bear absolutely no relationship to anything that goes on in real organisms, but after staring at them for a while, I realized what this book is actually about.
This book is a description of the development and evolution of balloon animals.
This prompted a poster on another blog I read to produce what I think is the best lolcat ever. -

Silcon.com
I use Silcon. I pay about $60/mo for 3M down, 768K up. I use 100% of my bandwidth 100% of the time. Nothing gets slowed down. I've been doing this well over a year. I have multiple static IP addresses and don't have to deal with per-computer PPPOE bullshit like with Earthlink (worst ISP EVER, except for SpeakEasy who are total fucking liars). So anyway, go with a mom-and-pop. They work. Check their availability with http://www.broadbandreports.com.

Re:iPhone is old tech
Magic Apple iPhone glass never breaks.
$250 is an expensive repair job. It's half the price of the 4GB phone. Plus another $30 for a loaner. Break it twice and you've bought a new phone. AT&T isn't dumb enough to be offering insurance on the thing either. If it were a rare occurrence, I'm sure AT&T would be happy to take your $5 a month. As it is, you break it, you're f#cked.

I have one of those cards and actually found that Mandriva a fix for it when I went to GUADEC and was given a free Mandriva-loaded USB stick (I was so pleased I wrote this on the GNOME Love Wall http://flickr.com/photos/pvillavi/899547399/ ). I've filed a bug on Ubuntu here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/restric
t ed-manager/+bug/130025 which should contain the options you need to put into xorg.conf on whatever distro you're on (most of them are probably redundant, but I don't have to time to go through disabling each line to see what is needed and what isn't). Wow, tech support on /., who woulda thunk it? -

Re:An Explanation
Have you ever even looked at an iPhone?
No, because, news flash, $500 for a PHONE? Right.
Why should a window be the arbitrary size of the screen, which has nothing to do with the content in the window?
Because I want to see the window and only the window- no other distractions, plenty of room for the application to show me what it wants to show me. This is especially useful for things which can be expanded to infinitely large size, like certain text and picture-based applications. -
Re:CIO.com doesn't want us to read the article
Their articles get a lot worse than that, too. Six lines of content and twice the advertising, for example.

I don't believe you...
"Great Britons second city, and there is quite literally a zero tolerance to photos"
This can't be true because a quick look on the internet shows lots of photos of Birmingham.
http://flickr.com/search/?q=birmingham&w=all
Including a photo of the Council House from 2007.
I don't believe all these people got police clearance to take these photos. I'd suggest you're making a bigger issue out of the whole situation than really exists. Though I sympathise with your concern about creeping legislative powers.
Incidently, the name of the country is "Great Britain" not "Great Briton". -

Re:Let it Die Already
then the whole radical shift of tone to deal with the destruction of the Earth really, to me, was the end.
...and to me, it was "that naive clown will finally start acting like a captain now..." Plus I totally get off on the weirdness between Trip and T'pal; that was the best, and the most fun, romantic, on-again/off-again theme I've ever seen in a television series. Though a southern-fried boy with dialect issues isn't exactly my idea of "manly goodness", they still pulled it off. So to speak.Another thing that was cool is Enterprise is showing on satellite in high definition; I've got a radical HDTV setup, and watching Enterprise on it is just plain fun.

Towers and orgone/qi/prana energy
"Negative vibes" from towers?
There's a growing number of people who do believe something like that. Probably the average
/.er (if anyone's still reading these comments) will laugh very hard, and consider this to be even 'better' than the tinfoil hats, but anyway:'Orgonite' is a mixture of resin and metal shavings - basically like fibreglass but with metal instead of glass - and often with quartz and other crystals added. It absorbs the negative form of the basic 'life force' energy which the Chinese call 'qi', Indians call 'prana', and Wilhelm Reich who researched it in the 1950s called 'orgone'; and converts it to the positive form, with a resulting improvement in the surrounding environment.
The most common orgonite device is a simple piece of this substance with a quartz crystal, moulded in a muffin pan, and it's known as a 'tower buster' because the most common use for them is converting the negative orgone energy produced by cell phone (and some other) towers - which produce a lot of it, and people who make and distribute orgonite 'gifts' (as they're often called) generally believe that it's this energy (also produced in large quantities by nuclear reactors and radioactive substances, among other things) that is the real problem. Of course, 'tower busters' can be used for other things; burying one of them next to the two apple trees in my garden made them produce a large yield of edible apples for the first time!
A more exotic orgonite device is the 'cloudbuster', which can do things like this.
It's the craziest thing ever, but for anyone with an open mind, orgonite is cheap and simple to make and experiment with. (several people also sell it pre-made; see the vendors list on Etheric Warriors)

Re:Pay for nice wood
I used Truck Bed liner from spraycans at the local auto parts store. It gave the cheap wood I used a very nice semi rough texture and also a very duable surface. It was also far cheaper than the alternative, I was going to cover it with laminate which would have cost like 250-300 between 3 sheets of laminate and the contact cement. The monitor is an 800x600 monitor I purchased on ebay for 150. - cost 100 to have the damn thing shipped. The Control Panel itself was about 80% of the work.
