And that isn't even the first iPhone product shipping (since last year). Freenet already filed to get a trademark in Germany in 2004, but the German Patent and Trademark Office refused to grant it because iPhone "was already in general use for internet phones".

Yeah, I know someone said this already, but it must surely be obvious. I mean, do you leave all your real world mail on the doorstep or in the "mailbox" at the end of the drive ?

I used to work for a company where the "admin" had an inbox (Outlook Express) that had every mail she had ever received still in it, dating back around 3 years. Fine, not my problem - until she got a virus and I had to scan the whole damn thing. 6 f*ckin hours to scan it ! Productivity - NOT.

Personally, I have all my email accounts as IMAP on my server and deal with all incoming mail as soon as I can. I delete the crap, and read then move to a relevant folder all the rest. Once a month or so, I use Outlook Express on my laptop to download all the stored mail and clear out the IMAP folders. I use message rules in OE to sort the incoming mail into the relevant folders as it comes in, so I don't even have to look at it ( I have already read this mail remember - I just use Ctrl + A and Ctrl + Q to mark all the messages as read in each folder). This is so that I have a local mobile copy of everything in case of a fire or other disaster that I can just grab on my way out the door. Also comes in handy when travelling.

I have moved the outlook express dbx storage folder to a separate partition on the laptop disk, so that if/when I require a re-install of xp I can just point OE to that folder and recover all my mail. Also, once every so often I run DbxConv on the dbx files and convert them to mbox format, then archive them to a cd/dvd for backup. I currently have around 10,000 messages on the laptop organised by subject ( Servers / Domains / Bike / various LUGs / mailing lists / UT2K3 / various website traffic / personal stuff / etc etc) dating back to 2001 (when I bought this particular laptop) which takes up around 250 MB.

My inboxes however, in both OE and on the IMAP servers are completely empty. Yes I do have gmail, but given the nature of the beast, I don't use it for any messages of consequence, and label then archive any mail I do get, so the inbox is still empty.

Is it so hard to stay on top of things that people invent new software just to filter mail because they are too lazy to do it themselves ? And don't give me the Time excuse. If you start with an empty inbox, the time required to keep it that way is minimal.

However, I don't know of any camera manufacturer who currently makes cameras which save to a truely open RAW format. Maybe Adobe's DNG will change that, but right now I don't know it being implemented anywhere. So it's not a choice of open or closed, it's a choice of closed or crappy. And I think that anyone but the most free software adherent who doesn't run anything on their computer they don't have the source code to* would go with closed given that choice.

And the "this is how things are" knife cuts both ways: it may be a choice on the person who buys the camera to get 'locked into' a format, but to the extent the Gimp needs to license stuff to read RAW it's also a choice by the developers not do so, so when the question DOES come up they don't get to pretend that the Gimp is at the level of Photoshop. (At least in that arena.) You may feel that the Gimp can be excused, or that not licensing it is a good decision to make because of openness, but that doesn't change the fact that Photoshop does something the Gimp doesn't.

(Now, that said, there are OSS programs that have reverse engineered** RAW formats. Most notably dcraw. Which seems to work fine, considering I used it for a couple weeks to convert roughly 1500 photos from Canon RAW to JPG***. So, a question to anyone with the proper experience: do you have any opinion on the quality differences of converting Canon RAW (350D) with dcraw compared to, say, Adobe Camera RAW or Canon Photo Professional (came with the camera)? Also, any differences in quality of HDR images between something like this CinePaint plugin and CS2?)

* I don't mean this to be derogatory by any means. I actually find it somewhat admirable, because it's a level of idealism I think I'll never be at.

** And by the programs have reverse engineered the formats, I mean of course that the authors of the programs (or maybe others!) have reverse engineered them.

*** And by Canon RAW to JPG, I mean I used dcraw to convert RAW to PPM, ppm2bmp to go PPM to BMP (duh), and then some other converter to go BMP to JPG. Yeah, my toolchain needed some help... but I didn't have much choice, because I couldn't install software.

Check out wabbellab It is a marble madness style game for Nokia Series 60 smart-phones, that uses the phone's camera to detect tilt of the phone. Source code is available under a GNU Licence.

I have a copy on my phone. It works, but is quite hard to use.
