Re:Multiple OSes are good - monopolies are bad
I have always had an interest in free software and alternative operating systems. Back in the 1990s, I heard about an interesting innovative operating system called BeOS. BeOS expressed a desire to peacefully coexist with Microsoft. Microsoft applied pressure to computer companies to not sell any computers with BeOS pre-installed, so BeOS went out of Business.
A few years earlier, in the 1990s, a company come out with their own DOS clone. From what I have heard, the Microsoft programmers designed some of the Microsoft products to give error messages when running under the DOS clone even when there really was not a problem.
Once Microsoft gained dominance they tried to squeeze out alternatives my fighting against open standards. They prefer to use proprietary standards instead. On various occasions they have also tried to take open standard and add proprietary extensions to them. That strategy is called extend, embrace and extinguish. Microsoft almost missed the Internet while promoting it's own proprietary alternatives. It almost missed the boat on that and Bill Gates quickly changed course. The Internet was created with open standards such as TCP/IP and HTML. Netscape was the dominate browser back then and the browser, to a large extent, controls what standards are used. If I remember correctly, I once read that Netscape even dared to publicly make some statements about the browser making the choice of operating system less significant. So somehow Microsoft had to destroy Netscape, perhaps, so that they could better influence what standards are used.
According to a website, "Lacking any decent technology of their own, Microsoft licensed the Mosaic web browser from Spyglass which they turned into Internet Explorer." That website then gos on to say "Microsoft royally screwed over Spyglass by licensing their code and then turning around and giving it away for free." By including it for free, pre-installed with Windows they destroyed Netscape and Spyglass. Since then Internet Explorer has become the dominant browser and is the only browser that in not standards compliant.
Sun Microsystems, developed Java a programming language what would allow programmer to create programs that are operating system dependent. Micrsoft bought a license for Java, from Sun, and then tried to add their own proprietary extensions to Java. Sun successfully sued them for violating the terms of the license.
The political fight against the effort to use open-standards such as ODF in Mass is another example. Microsoft prefers to keep their Open Office users locked-in with proprietary standards such as Office 12 XML instead.
About 6 or 7 years ago I stated using Linux which is a free open-source Unix clone operating system. There weren't many big advantages over Windows other than that Linux users didn't get computer viruses or infected by email mail attachments. It somehow more like I was more in control of what was installed on my computer and how it was configured. Furthermore, the GPL license allowed me to freely copy Linux and most of my free Linux programs from one computer to another. I no longer felt big brother Bill looking over my shoulder.
Since then, I Linux has improved to where Ubuntu Linux feels very polished complete and easy to use and install. Whenever I want some new program, I just use Synaptic to choose from the list of thousands of free programs and quickly download whatever free GPL licensed program that I want. I am totally happy with Ubuntu Linux.
Back about 5 or 6 years ago, I was still using Windows ME and Office 2000 on one of my computers. That computer had what I later realized was a slightly bad power supply

Yes, M$ grants themself permision to monitor.
Please point me to a specific clause in the Windows EULA that proves that this isn't a complete fabrication. Please. Prove me wrong.
It's easier for me to cite other people's opinions than it is to dig through M$'s obnoxious EULAs.
Here's one 2003 study which validates practices others have found looking at tools like fastfind even further back. M$'s EULA fun has been going on for a while. They usually pretend they are looking for copyright violations in their snooping. Here's more:
It could be true that non free software requires such invasive practices to maintain itself in the world. That's just one more reason to avoid it.

Re:Linux sNOBs
The good news is that there are still forums (fora?) around where good manners still seem to prevail.
I have found the channels on Freenode to be filled with very patient, helpful and generally pretty nice people. The biggest hassles I have seen there have come from the questioners themselves. Some seem to expect a definitive answer to their question/s practically immediately and become cranky quite quickly.
Personally, I blame Microsoft, television, George Bush(the alpha and the omega),and without a shadow of a doubt microwave ovens for the timely indulgences they offer us. -
nonsense, I was taking it easy. These people have the lowdown on what M$ keeps track of without telling the user. Fast find remembers your passwords and everything else you type. It's one small part of the tools that defeat any serious attempt at security on Microsoft platforms.

Some of Bill Gates less sung accomplishments:I'd hate for the guy so celebrated as a philanthropist to not have these worthy accomplishments accredited to him as well:

I found it funny
I remember when they first came out with "WeHaveTheWayOut.com" campaign.
I dutifully registered (expired last year) "TheyDoNotHaveTheWayOut.com"
and merrily pointed it to go to FuckMicrosoft.com
Now you know how I feel. :) -
i had to say
i haven't even rtfa yet (just about to) but this is the first slashdot headline that has actually made me laugh out loud.
see this site for why if you don't know -
Re:OS's fault
Yes, and I'm sure Microsoft won't sign Sony's code, right?. Microsoft is totally against predatory practices like this, right?
Have you any idea about the hidden data Microsoft keeps on your windows machine right now?
Heh, don't worry, on Windows Vista you'll never see this thing happening. DRM will make it impossible for you to discover corporate rootkits. Enjoy your privacy. -
Re:It's *not* rocket science, guys...
No, but in alternative browsers clearing history to cover your tracks actually clears your history, In IE, the really hidden copy stays.
http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-fil es.shtml has all the info you need to know. -
ripoff time
safe mode in IE, tabbed browsing, RSS feeds.. ok that covers what got stolen from firefox. translucent windows - thats OSX from what i have been led to understand (i haven't seen it apart from on KDE, i don't own a mac). So basically vista has viewed (how apt) what the public loves elsewhere and nicked it. other than these couple of new featuers it's a slow version of XP, yawn. oh and whoever said about ie that one of it's features was
"easy history deletion."
excuse me while i laugh my lungs up. anyone remember this debacle (fuckmicrosoft.com, but is SFW as redirects to microsuck....just typed the old URL in out of habit :) -
Re:Umm.. duh.
Microsoft keeps a history of your surfing practices and e-mail which can be parsed by a virus anyways. Who cares if a virus can't get to the addressbook, it can parse these files and get enough addresses to send itself to.

Re:The hard part is over...I only have one thing to say to anyone who doesn't think Microsoft and/or Bill is evil....read this:
-
Re:A good ruling
OK, another exercise for the reader. Substitute again "store" with "website", and then put up a website like http://fuckmicrosoft.com/.
Now what? -
Re:Riiiiiight...Yeah, there is no difference whatsoever between rape, murder and software programming you idiot. If microsoft knew what the hell they were doing, they would have never had a security flaw in the first place for anyone to exploit. Take your microsoft loving ass to this website:
Then come back and tell me how we shouldn't blame microsoft. Until you know what the fuck you are talking about, don't try to say this wasn't Microsoft's fault...nobody here is going to side with your ass.
-
Damn it
Way to post an invalid URI, you insensitive clod! BTW, have you seen this site? I hear that it's CowboyNeal's home page.

wohoo
lets all go out and register our own sites like fuckmicrosoft.com!

Re:I *WANT* my mouse to click
History: I can selectively delete in every browser, and Opera makes it really easy to nuke it all (along with cache and Wand passwords, among other things)
Favorites/Bookmarks: Remember the damn URLs! Actually, I just use two portals, thehun and autopr0n.
Cache: In IE, it gets REALLY fun, as Windows tries to hide your cache, filling up your hard drive, making it almost impossible to delete quickly, and if you know where it is, fairly easy to find. As for the other browsers, you can kill the cache VERY easily (especially in Opera - it's a great browser if you are paranoid, but it has rather severe memory leaks on Windows, so don't run it on a DOS-based OS).
Password lists: IE hides them fairly well, unless you stumble on a site that a password is saved for. Opera keeps them rather visible, but you can nuke the whole list in a matter of seconds. -
Relative to who you are.
Yep I understand and also think we need a more friendly website to produce information for alternatives to Microsoft software. For those of you that have seen the Blue Screen of Death, goto FuckMicrosoft.com. For those of you that enjoy a little spice with your operating system, try GNU/Lesbian or RTFM OS. And for those of you that always RTFM, try Emacs OS; just remember that when using Emacs OS, you need a good wordprocessor and the best one you can get is here.
-
Information on alternatives.
FuckMicrosoft.com has the largest list of Microsoft-alternative software that I have ever seen.
-
But of course...
If you bought a computer you bought a Windows license, right? Thus all computer users MUST be Windows users. Yeah, I see many, many, many Windows open on my Mac at the moment.
What ticks me off is, for example TODAY, a loser was asking me how to take his Windows Media Player 9 imported files (couldn't seem to only get audio, but also got Video of nothing) -- and strip the video, convert and save down to a MP3. It was some old record collection he was importing and wanted to play.
I laughed and asked him what I told him to buy. A Mac. Ooohh, but XP is so pretty. Fucking useless operating system, start to finish. I told him to buy another hard drive to store his damn music.
Fuck that -
Re:OK I'll bite...
Microsoft 'extending' Java - making existing code non-interoperable between Sun and Microsoft's versions.
Embrace and extend (and by 'extend' they mean extend in ways that will strengthen Microsoft proprietary lock-in) is something we have seen Microsoft do over and over again with various standards.
Are you people blind? As much as Microsoft trys to brush these things under the rug, THEY EXIST! They have left a slimey trail of misconduct going back for years.
How in the world can you consider standing next to Microsoft? How can you consider anything they say as truthful and honest? I can't, in good faith, applaud Gate's words; his actions speak louder. -
Re:Truth?
>>Well, is the game installed on any of their computers?
Well even though the game is browser based, it shouldn't be too hard for any potential investigators to figure out if these 3 whackos were playing it. Besides keeping remnants of online sessions in the browser cache, Windows stores lists of visited sites in some pretty interesting places.
In case anyone cares, the site has been renamed microsuck. Personally I prefer the old name. -

Mozilla drone #325432 to Fearless Leader:
Mock all you wish, Dude;
Have infiltrated r0xah's computer. My hidden files have not been found. What a trusting fool he is. Hahahaha! But, if you, or your clients or customers, use Windows, and you are at all concerned about security, privacy or legal liability, please read the following:
There are folders on your computer that Microsoft has tried hard to keep secret. Within these folders you will find two major things: Microsoft Internet Explorer has not been clearing your browsing history after you have instructed it to do so, and Microsoft's Outlook Express has not been deleting your e-mail correspondence after you've erased them from your Deleted Items bin.
I did not write the above quote. I did not make it up. I found it here. I tried it. It works. It is true. The best defenses are to clean out the offending files and use non-microsoft browsers and e-mail clients.

call me an asshole..
but if the FireBird SQL Project had a product, with all the international use, why havent i (or any of the guys i happen to work with) heard of this product?? After that immature posting that the article mentioned, i would not change my name, we all know AOL is just as powerful as Microsoft so why dont they just go and kick some open source ass..

Google is running Red Hat Linux
Did you know that? Yeah, it's true, Google is running Red Hat Linux.
However, Google remainds me Slackware (simplicity).
And n0dez's page www.n0dez.com is running Red Hat Linux on most systems and on some Slackware (no Debian). They're also thinking about install FreeBSD on some workstations. FreeBSD is running on many systems at Yahoo!
Visit all those sites and don't forget to visit this one as well: Microsoft -
Really Important News about Microsoft!!Read this. I cant believe this! I am switching to a GNU operating system today!

LGP and ports.I am always frequenting Linuxgames.com for information, help new users run their applications on Linux, and to then throw a cape on my back and post as the Alpha Troll. I was contacted by a representative of the Linux Game Publishing group about their interest in porting their current project "Majesty" to the clean 64bit Alpha platform. LGP's main office, from what I understand, is somewhere in London and they have a small workforce in Tustin-California. I have not received word from them for about 1 month on whether they would like for me to schedule a drop-off of a good Alpha Linux|netBSD computer. For those of you that say Alhpa is dead...you are dead wrong. Also of use to commercial developers, the Alpha platform offers benefit of a clean code-path to port software to other 64bit platforms in the future.
LGP is quite a promising group of people. They're working alongside Tuxgames to sell their software. If you support Linux, you should purchase all your software from Tuxgames. As for Happypenguin, this news is 24 hours old and Linuxgames.com posted an article before they did
:-) . Happypenguin.org covers more home-brew games than Linuxgames.com, but when it comes to commercial games they both offer competitivly insightful forums. For the greatest source of gaming news in europe, HOLARSE is the place to go (PS: use babelfish). In fact, just now, Linuxgames.com has an article about how LGP is taking over the porting effort of Mindrover: Eruopa Project. And one last thought, Linuxgames.com doesn't censor their forums, unlike Happypenguin.org

"Don't think for a second that Microsoft hasn't put back doored software onto your computer.. that's already been documented."
What a load of crap! Internet Explorer saves your URL/Searches! STOP THE PRESSES! Internet Explorer saves cookies and history! BREAKING NEWS! OMIGOD IT'S A CONSPIRACY! Whoa, Microsoft installed "secret" files! How evil! The system attribute has only been around since, uh, DOS 1.0 or something! What a fucking load of breathless alarmism!
Anybody who has used a Microsoft OS knows about this. Why don't you talk next about "stealth dot files!", or "why Linus Torvalds doesn't want you to cat files in /dev!" or "history file records your actions!" -
Re:Eventually, this would happen
Some "kiddie" most likely did not do this.
Perhaps this is the work of an international ring of expert black hat hackers who are doing this in order to build up their network of computers that are available as jumping points for future hacking?
I'm not worried about "kiddies" in the closed source world, but about the incredibly devious companies that produce programs. Don't think for a second that Microsoft hasn't put back doored software onto your computer.. that's already been documented. -
Not really a Slashdot book.
I'm just glad I got this for free -- somebody bought it for me off the Amazon.com wish list for fuckMicrosoft.com (plug, plug).
I, too, was amazed at how THIN it was. Aside from having a hard copy of the directions for tweaking Sendmail so it works locally, I don't expect to get much use out of this book.
If you want to do some serious, under-the-GUI hacking, get "Mac OS X Unleashed." Seriously ass-kicking, as most of the Unleashed series tends to be. (Had to pay for that one . . . ) -
Re:37?
You can't name 37 OS'es? You should take a look here - sorry about the offensive domain name, but they really do have a very long list of OS'es, both old and new!
-
Does that has to do with TechTV???
Does that has to do with the kid that was on TechTV's, The Screen Savers, about a week ago which demostrated 39 operating systems in his machine including many versions of MS-DOS and Free-DOS, QNX, ERIKA, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and other less famous OS such as Lesbian, and ERIKA.
If anyone want to see a pretty cute list of OSes go to fuckmicrosoft.com

Windows 89? Office 200?
".. with full compatibility with Office 200 and Word"
.. I realize it was a typo in the topic - but it reminds me of all those knockoff burned SVCD's where half the text is misspelled, or is written in Engrish. What's next - Windows 89? -

Re:A complete list
Other then just clicking on the MS link, is there a site devoted just to the fuckups of MS?
Well... how about htpp://www.fuckmicrosoft.com or
http://msbc.simplenet.com/super -
Re:A complete list
well it's not exactly what you seek, but they do report MS screwups even more vehemently than
/. (yes that is quite a feat)
fuckmicrosft.com
the one really cool feature is that they offer tons of free funny email re-directs (but they charge a 1 time fee for pop), but i havent tested any of em just cause im pretty carefull about who i ever give an email addy too... got a feeling they are safe from what i have heard but i just take no chances on spam.
if you go thru their news archive you can find plenty of fun stuff though im sure ;) -
you need downtime...
Well, I have a Sleep/Downtime replacement called "Coffee". It's relatively portable, lasts ages in it's pre-prepared form (may even be consumed in this form at a pinch), and only 5 minutes preparation time can replace up to 12 hours of Sleep. (Alternatives available)Besides, as soon as I clocked the title I was worried. No more rebooting doesn't make much odds to *nix users. but while the average Joe Luser may not contribute jack shit to the Open Source community, money is money. Ask an average user (Box from high street chain, OEM windows install, clueless) "What ticks you off about Windows?" and none will say "The built in privacy violations. None will say "The bloated binaries." (hey, this thing is slow, better spunk away another grand on another one!) None will say "The attrocious security blunders". None will say "Contributing to a competitor-strangling monopoly."
It's crashes. Every time I've asked, anyway. Crashes are what tick off the ordinary Joe Luser. Losing work, watching scandisk (To quote Jack Dee, a mainstream comedian: "I didn't shutdown from the start menu because you crashed!), ruining marriage. Well maybe not the last one. But in a world without rebooting, how the hell are we going to sell *nix to the tech-clueless Windoze crowd? Face it, even "Free" software needs capital.

A (temporary) Bandwidth Hog writes...
Yeah I hog bandwidth, all 512Kbit for a few hours most days, but not warez, and only a little MP3/pr0n. It's almost exclusiveley (legal) ISO's, just go here and look at the list on the left. I'm not gonna do what I did a year ago; try a few distros (inc BeOS :), think "Nah, this is too much to learn, I'll never master it", and go back to limping along in Windows. And smoking pot.Ah, oh yeah, bandwidth charges... Well, 11Gb so far this month. NTL are £11billion in debt so I'm getting what I can, while I can, before a bandwidth cap/excess charge rears it's ugly head.
Yeah, activities like this are what might cause this, but considering that £11bn works out around £3500 per customer then there must have been some serious boardroom balls-ups somewhere along the line. Anyway, I'll be done soon, I promise
:-)On the other hand, NTL have 3 different speeds available in my area:
128kbit = £14.99/month
512kbit = £24.99 (what I use, does an ISO in just under 3 hours)
1Mbit = £49.99 *drools*
It's a 12-month minimum contract, which is fair enough. One cool thing is that I can still change the speed to meet my requirements, although when it comes to ease of use, it's a fine line between getting what I want from NTL customer service and doing a goatse. So I think it's fair to pay for the bandwidth you use as long as those that don't use it get an equivalent discount in the other direction. You can't have it both ways.
I see it working out that 128kbit makes it reasonable for people to switch from dialup services, especially if they have a dedicated phone line for it. Granted, with patience you can do an ISO, but most people on this service simply will not bother with that sorta stuff. Even if they did, the load would be spread to off-peak times so that it does not slow down peak times significantly, which would cause NTL to have to invest in a fatter backbone connection. I see these users as partly subsidising the 512Kbit/1Mb users.
The occasional ISO taster such as me will strain it at times, but not too often. AFAIK my upstream is only 256Kbit, so that rules out any serious servers, not that I'd run any myself. As for MP3's, I'm a copyright theif, not a musical charity.
:PThe 1MB service is overkill for most residential users. It appeals to businesses, meaning that it will be busier during the day rather than in the evening. That definiteley helps to smooth out bandwidth usage.
The bandwidth usage of customers on a certain package will tend to be decided by what activities are practical at that speed.

Haha... they are using an 1985 filesystem...
OFS, wasn't that the os prior to FastFilesystem on amiga? (FFS)
they should have skipped to the next letter. PFS... uh no ProFileSystem on amiga again, is there a QFS yet? :)
Anyways, With the current stuff microsoft is hiding in it's OS/filesystem I wouldn't be surprised to see a LOT of spyware/logware in an obscure filesystem like this, and this time, *REALLY* hidden, at least for a year or two the time some people code low-level disk tools.
The scary thing is I don't see the need to upgrade past NTFS5 until I get 13+TB raids (ntfs's limit). I am currently at 1.2 on my datacenter so it's probably still going to be a few years (I hope). I wonder what tactic they'll use to shove it down to reluctant people like me into using it. Up to now I didn't need to use XP, and I'm happy with win2k. I evaluated XP for 3 days and I've returned it (didn't activate it). I hope the next generation won't suck as much, and if it does, I hope I'll be able to keep win2k for that one has well. -
Really Important News about Microsoft!!Read this. I cant believe this! I am switching to a GNU operating system today!
(This also includes all incoming and outgoing file attachments.) And believe me, that's not even the half of it.

Re:Oh, and while you're at it...
..."a fractious society of individuals cannot stand against a more organized, united force of similar numbers."
Care to tell me how the American Revolutionaries beat the British? Put aside the fact that they were not anarchist - they were still much more "fractious" than the British army. What you stated there is an excellent example of the type of propaganda the British government would have had you believe. "The American colonists are weak - I mean - we are much more organized, civilized. We will surely win." Of course, they lost their asses.
And on the assumption that an anarchist society would be "fractious" - bullshit. That is just wrong. It's pro-authoritarian propaganda, with no rational basis whatsoever. Spain did it. And maybe they did fall to outside forces - but the Spanish revolution was in no way "fractious." They were just as good and in some cases better than their authoritarian counterparts. Spain in the end did not succeed because an overwhelming amount of force by several different governments moved in and stifled it - eventually stopping it dead in it's tracks. If the US, UK, and France decided to move into 1 country - even if that country is authoritarian, with a strong military and "good values" etc. it would still lose. The Spanish revolution was a wonderful example of anarchy working, not failing. It was stopped only because massive forces brought it down. Had the movement been bigger, it would have been much more difficult to squash.
"Anarchy means no laws...find a way to kill you...perfectly alright to do so...rape your wife and get away with it. I face no penalty if you cannot bring force to bear on me."
This is the most common comment. Just about everyone asks it, including yours truly. First of all, in an anarchist society - the motivation to do such things would be far less. It is in anarchists opinion (this is all in the Anarchist FAQ, btw), that these problems, like killing and raping and stealing, are problems caused by authority and authority structures. Since these structures and mindsets would not exist - the breeding ground for anti-social behavior (read: crime) would not exist, and so these occurences would be much less prevalent.
Now, when things like killing or raping do happen - what would an anarchist society do? Well for one thing, we wouldn't just execute you. Revenge solves nothing, and it usually just makes the problem worse. We would try to help you, and we would desire to know why you did what you did. Anarchists wish to attack the problems of society at the roots and not after the fact. Killing a killer does nothing - it does not prevent further killers from killing, all it does it satisfy peoples fears. People are shaped by the society they live in, the types of relationships they have, and many other interactions. This means that is it a problem with society and how things work when killers kill and rapers rape (again, all of what I am telling you is in the FAQ, I strongly request that you read it). Instead of killing you - we would help you. Now, I expect you to disagree with me here. Most people do. Oh well, then you are of differing opinion. The only other case is if I am a complete psycho and I kill people over and over, raping as I do it. I kill the people that attempt to help me, and so on. Then the city or commune as a whole (keep in mind, anarchist "cities" would be much smaller than the cities you are used to) would come together and make a decision on whether or not the person should be executed or banished or what. Direct democracy, remember. To suggest that in anarchy we would allow killing to take place shows that you do not understand what I "preach" - for some direct information on this subject, I suggest section A.2.4 of the FAQ, Are anarchists in favour of "absolute" liberty?. Several other sections cover the topic of crime and such, exercise for the reader (The FAQ is rather lengthly, but reading it in whole helps alot, as much of it assumes that you have read other parts as well).
In short, me killing you to stop you from raping my wife is not wrong. Self-defense as well. La dee da, it is all in the FAQ if you do not understand.
Anyways, I must be getting back to studying now - I would love to continue this through email if you would like.
