Re:Sunrise disaster
What about gentoo games? Or portage-ng? Or even the new website layout? That's right. They all failed. Just keep adding more trash to the pile, guys.. The gentoo project seems to be like the child with AD(H)D in the linux world.

Re:Regardless of the Dist you use
AFAIK, gentoo games has been dead for a while. I run gentoo, and actually got introduced to it through gentoogames, as they had a bootable cd with unreal tournament on it. It used to be available on http://www.gentoogames.com/ but that site has been blank for some time. Is there anywhere else to get info on the project?
-
gentoo?
check out gentoo games, they have done it with americas army and some others.

Re:Bootable CD is the answer.
Oh, so Gentoo is hot shit, huh? Well does anyone remember Gentoo Games? Yeah, at www.gentoogames.com, as was announced over a year ago. But there's nothing at that site! Huh, I guess the Gentoo crowd fell flat on their face trying to "innovate" Linux gaming. Oh well.

LinkageGentoo Games, Inc, a recently-established project, produces a number of free bootable game CDs based on the Gentoo Linux meta-distribution.

Linux distro's need to partner...
More aggressively with game developers. I mean its sort of sad that even though there are a handful of active commercial (and non-commercial albeit high quality as in my sig) game developers who are supporting Linux there is still the perception that Linux doesn't have games.
Gentoo seems to get it, but I'd expect to see a more aggressive commercial distribution seriously pimping this and I believe in we really need some good exposure like this. -
Lots of desktop competition..
There is lots of competition on the desktop right now, with:
Mandrake
Lindows
Xandros
Lycoris
Gentoo Games
Debian
And of course Slackware and Suse
Maybe they decided the market was already full. Turning it over the the community makes pretty good sense. Enterprise has always been their primary market. -
Gentoo Games
Just incase nobody else mentioned it.... http://gentoogames.com/
Access to ISO's via ftp/ bittorent
America's Army + Castle Wolfenstein
I especially recommend Castle Wolfenstein, 87.3% guarantee you will like it if you give it a chance.

Gentoo did it first.
Gentoo Games did this first!

Re:Here's the catch
Can you provide a link to this?

Gentoo Games
They do. Look into Gentoo Games

Re:Why is it so hard
Don't flame me for mentioning Gentoo. but they are actually doing this. www.gentoogames.com have a live CD with Wolfenstein ET. Just boot the CD, and in a while you've got Wolfenstein running. Hasn't anyone else done this before?

Re:Sorry, sympathy meter's reading zero, dude.
You mean something like this?

Re:Mac GamingWhat I am still wondering about is why no game company has created the selfbooting game.
There is
... for Linux, anyway.Check out Gentoo Games who already made Live CDs of Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and America's Army.
They work great
.. just pop them in your puter, boot up, it detects everything, and runs over the network. -
Re:LINUX GAMING MODE
That's what Gentoo is doing with it's Game CDs. I wouldn't be suprised to see Gentoo Games make an agreement with software houses to publish and sell Gentoo Game CD versions of their most popular games, thus evolving the linux games market from where Loki left off.
-
Re:Why....
Well, there's a Linux version of America's Army, so why not a Mac version? Ok, you have to boot from the CD for it, but it still runs off of Linux.

Re:Olli
Have a look at gentoogames This is/will be the Linux distro specifically for gamers, but they make no compromise: booting directly into the game is not what a so-far-windows-only user wants to get warm with GNU/linux. The intention behind the jollix project is to use some games - either running natively or through wine - to have a certain type of user attract to deal with a new OS. At LAN parties I noticed that it is just "cool" for some guys to see someone play under linux. So this is a real chance to get those people in touch with GNU/linux I think.

Re:KnoppixRTCW??? ET is free ya know...
No knoppix build that I know of, but gentoogames does have a bootable RTCW:ET disc. Download instructions for it are right on their main page.
-
Re:Boot from CD?
Check out Gentoo Games.
They do exactly this with a specially tweaked bootable liveCD Gentoo Linux distro, although only with free games (America's Army was the first, bleh - WolfET was the second though, and is much better). -
Re:Patch Available
Crap. It broke my machine. I can't play GTA anymore!
Hurry! Go here to play your games with the new patch!
-
Forgot to mention. Wolfenstien Gentoo CD.
I'm amazed that Gentoo Games was not mentioned they released Wolfenstien and have a bittorent to download it!

Re:Isn't this just more media for Linux? -OT
Close. I think actually the next best think is the bootable Gentoo. Of course Americas Army is a nice bone thrown in there too.
Got to have emerge. Besided srpms fail, a lot. Still easier to use make by hand and thats just not as satisfying (but still more fun then double-click-install:-).
