Obligatory: Intel CPU Backdoor Report (Jan 1 2018)
Intel PR: I warned you about -1, this is now being posted on multiple threads
Change log:
2018/01/01 - Added 14 Useful Links. Disable Intel ME 11 via undocumented NSA "High Assurance Platform" mode with me_cleaner, Blackhat Dec 2017 Intel ME presentation, Intel ME CVEs (CVSS Scored 7.2-10.0)Intel CPU Backdoor Report
The goal of this report is to make the existence of Intel CPU backdoors a common knowledge and provide information on backdoor removal. What we know about Intel CPU backdoors so far:
TL;DR version
Your Intel CPU and Chipset is running a backdoor as we speak.
The backdoor hardware is inside the CPU/Bridge and the backdoor firmware (Intel Management Engine) is in the chipset flash memory.
30C3 Intel ME live hack:
[Video] 30C3: Persistent, Stealthy, Remote-controlled Dedicated Hardware Malware
@21:43, keystrokes leaked from Intel ME above the OS, wireshark failed to detect packets.[Quotes] Vortrag:
"the ME provides a perfect environment for undetectable sensitive data leakage on behalf of the attacker"."We can permanently monitor the keyboard buffer on both operating system targets."
Decoding Intel backdoors:
The situation is out of control and the Libreboot/Coreboot community is looking for BIOS/Firmware experts to help with the Intel ME decoding effort. If you are skilled in these areas, download Intel ME firmwares from this collection and have a go at them, beware Intel is using a lot of counter measures to prevent their backdoors from being decoded (explained below).
Backdoor removal:
The backdoor firmware can be removed by following this guide using the me_cleaner script.
Removal requires a Raspberry Pi (with GPIO pins) and a SOIC clip.2017 Dec Update:
Intel ME on recent CPUs may be disabled by enabling the undocumented NSA HAP mode, use me_cleaner with -S option to set the HAP bit, see me_cleaner: HAP AltMeDisable bit.Useful links (Added 2018 Jan 1):

Re:Deceiving headline
1. It's still obviously a platform game, even at the 'hardest' level. Try it and tell yourself platforming experience doesn't matter. You can even sort of recognize the ladders (which, given the goal of the game, are pretty crucial).
2. The algorithm they are comparing against is designed for exploration, not for getting to a goal as quickly as possible. See: https://pathak22.github.io/nor...
Note also that that comparison was not about pitting humans against the best algorithm for this specific game, but to highlight the point that there is information in the specific representation in objects that humans use and NN algorithms don't (yet). -
Re:Cheating
You don't know what you're talking about. They didn't use ‘a bad port’, but a dump of the Atari game running in the emulator Stella hooked up to their AI with an interface library.
So either the dump wasn't bit perfect, the interface library somehow upset the emulator even though it should only operate on the boundary, or more likely, they actually did find a bug in either the game itself or Stella, which is a lot more interesting than you make it out to be. At this point it's too early to tell, but yes, it is still possible that this bug exists in the game as running on the real console.
The authors of the paper just say ‘For a reason unknown to us’, so I presume they haven't tried to hunt down the bug; if so, they haven't published anything about it. -

Re:WTF?
Or waterfox.
But it's stuck at Firefox 56, which is now two major versions behind. Consequently Waterfox doesn't have things like the new WebAssembly compiler. Compare Waterfox and Firefox in this WebAssembly compilation benchmark.
The Waterfox project says they'll be developing a “new” browser, whatever that means. Maybe they'll be switching engines to Blink or WebKit.

Use K9 for Android mail
If you're on Android & care about email I strongly recommend K-9 Mail.
It is an open source mail client which is more like Thunderbird (i.e., it downloads messages locally) than the Gmail app. So you can open it even when you have no Internet and know that the email it downloaded will actually be available.
I travel quite a bit and found this ability utterly indispensable after a few times where I had things like boarding passes, hotel registrations, etc in my Gmail and wasn't able to easily load them in the Gmail mobile app. I now have a "Travel" folder in my Gmail which I've set to always download all the contents, so I know when I go to a new city it will have anything I need into it, accessible when I get there, with or without Internet access.
Maybe it has changed in the last few years but not having access to email that I had previously downloaded (i.e., "viewed on the cloud", which I suspect is what mostly happens with the Gmail app) was a total dealbreaker.
Supports multiple accounts, IMAP & POP3, even PGP if you care about that. The only thing that doesn't work great is search - it only will search your locally downloaded mail - and even then it seems to be a bit flaky. In these cases I use the Gmail mobile web interface to find things.
K-9 is a mail client on mobile that works much more like old school nerds would expect!

People love privacy. Always have.
Don't you believe that people don't like privacy. Almost one year ago, Noam Chomsky, Glenn Greenwald, and Edward Snowden spoke on privacy (use youtube-dl or avideo to download the video so you don't run YouTube's nonfree software by visiting their site) and the whole talk is worth hearing.
One part stands out—when Greenwald talks of common privacy myths around 28m23s (such as "I don't have anything to hide") by pointing out the results of his ongoing privacy test—he has an email account he invites anyone to send mail to listing all of the credentials and connection points for every account they control (including work accounts, bank accounts, social media accounts, and all sites for anything else). Why? He explains quite straightforwardly, "I just want to be able to troll through what you're doing online and post under your name because obviously if you're not a bad person you should have nothing to hide.".
The result is obvious and predictable: "To this day, not a single person has taken me up on this offer.".
"The people who say that they don't value their privacy don't actually mean it at all." Greenwald reminds us, and he's right. There has never been a time where people didn't value their privacy and any corporate sycophant who wants to claim otherwise here (or on any other corporate news repeater site) is either ignorant or lying.

Rats. Well, it was a good thought.

ReactXP was designed to be a thin, lightweight cross-platform abstraction layer on top of React and React Native. It implements a dozen or so foundational components that can be used to build more complex components. It also implements a collection of API namespaces that are required by most applications.
ReactXP currently supports the following platforms: web (React JS), iOS (React Native), Android (React Native) and Windows UWP (React Native). Windows UWP is still a work in progress, and some components and APIs are not yet complete.
The ReactXP version of Skype runs on Windows 10, iOS, Android and macOS. What about Linux? Well it seems like they support it via web wrapper, like Windows 7 and macOS

Re:BJC and code.org only serve a single purpose.
Most of your list is things you either ought to be obtaining elsewhere and/or earlier, or it is something a student most likely/easily going to attain after learning some programming--and, not sure how to break this to you, but most public school systems in the US do a damn lousy job of teaching anything. (They certainly don't teach history. It's social studies, which means you can skip parts of history that don't fit with the story you want to tell or which are embarrassing.)
The thing with starting with coding is because a lot of later classes on CS are going to assume you've got at least a generic understanding of code under your belt and if you like it, you'll actually be interested in learning more and developing greater skills in it--which means you'll pick up the theory and other elements and often be able to see how they work relatively soon, or at least not be subjected to bad explanations from people who probably understand the material worse than you do. Current thinking is that all a teacher for K12 students needs to actually know is how to teach--not the subject, never mind that a person who knows, understands, and enjoys the subject is hands down the best possible teacher you can get.
Incidentally, some of your list can be taught at elementary school or earlier. You can find many examples online of how to model logic gates with marbles (such as this) which means you can render a basic mechanical computer as a child's toy, and breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable parts is a skill you can definitely teach a child long before they are much good at reading and writing.

Actually, it doesn't.
It is now very easy to combine the title bar with the toolbar that traditionally was located just below.
You can also add custom views to the title bar. Here are some examples:

Re:DuckDuckGo's promise
If you use Tor, stick to Tor Browser's user agent string "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0" and do not change it to else. Do so make you uniquely identifiable. So remove UA switcher.
uBlock Origin silently poll data in background from raw.githubusercontents.com. Some people asked the dev to fix "phoning home" but was rejected. Use AdblockPlus instead. ABP connect to only filter servers(easylist.to).
Replace Ghostery to RequestPolicy or 3PRB. The latter support Quantum.
Isn't "Cookie Autodelete" not work in private mode? If you're not using private mode, you're screwed(really if you are using Tor, you should use private mode).

Re:Palemoon / Waterfox / etc
Firefox 52+ were the finishing touches to it.
No, there have been further performance improvements since 52. Try this simple example of the improvement in WebAssembly complication times.
In WaterFox 56.0.3 the highest result I got was: WebAssembly.instantiate took 1369.3 ms (9 MB/s)
In Firefox 58.0 the lowest result I got was: WebAssembly.instantiate took 222.5 ms (55.6 MB/s)Waterfox will continue to fall behind as new Firefox releases come out. Eventually Waterfox will have to bite the bullet and rebase on whatever the latest Firefox is at that time.

Sadly, I think it's got some stuff caught up in patents or something - the demo is very good.
I must admit, image wise, we haven't gone far in a long time. I'd like to see a very high compression lossless replacement myself and now that I (occassionally) do some light graphics work, JPG NEEDS to die, as soon as humanly possible, it's awful. -

No need to make your router do more work than it should when you can just tell the processes to behave.

Re:This says little about AIThe questions are nothing like that. Here's the reading material:
Packet mode communication may be implemented with or without intermediate forwarding nodes (packet switches or routers). Packets are normally forwarded by intermediate network nodes asynchronously using first-in, first-out buffering, but may be forwarded according to some scheduling discipline for fair queuing, traffic shaping, or for differentiated or guaranteed quality of service, such as weighted fair queuing or leaky bucket. In case of a shared physical medium (such as radio or 10BASE5), the packets may be delivered according to a multiple access scheme.
And here's the questions:
How are packets normally forwarded?
Answer: asynchronously using first-in, first-out buffering, but may be forwarded according to some scheduling discipline for fair queuing
How is packet mode communication implemented?
Answer: with or without intermediate forwarding nodes
In cases of shared physical medium how are they delivered?
Answer: according to a multiple access schemeSo the test taker only needs to find a selection of the original text that answers the question.
The way I see it, the real issue with the "reading comprehension" quiz is that you don't need to actually comprehend the text to answer it. A better question than "How are packets normally forwarded?" would be something like "What are some situations where packets are not forwarded in the fifo order?" The first question only requires you to find the words "packets", "normally" and "forwarded" in the paragraph and answer with the rest of the sentence. The second question requires you to understand that the text is presenting 2 options, one is "normal" and the other isn't.
There's also some official answers that are just plain incorrect. The answer to "How is packet mode communication implemented?" is the entire rest of the paragraph, not just "with or without intermediate forwarding nodes". -
Re:Doug Lenat's Test
The questions in this test weren't like that. The reading passages were Wikipedia articles, and the questions asked about objective statements that were clearly given in the passage. Here's an example.
The test you're talking about looks at something totally different. It presents ambiguous sentences with no context. The reader is supposed to use their existing knowledge to resolve the ambiguity and infer what the sentence is talking about. These are both interesting and important problems. But they're totally different problems. This work was aimed at solving the first problem, not the second one.

Voice dictation would be nice...
I was shocked that neither Amazon Echo nor Google Home can take voice dictation! They've got speech recognition, so surely they should be able to at least convert that to text and have it read back in Alexa/Google's voice later on at a bare minimum (this assumes it can't record audio and play it back later...which would be nice too).
Before you mention EchoScribe, that was a total hack involving an external microphone amongst other kludges (and the website is sneaky not mentioning the kludges up front)!

Why not just disable the ME once and for all?
I was thinking, disable the ME and keep the 10% - and add extra security on top, by simply not having an ME available for the world to enter.

Obligatory:Intel CPU Backdoor Report (Jan 1 2018)
Change log:
2018/01/01 - Added 14 Useful Links. Disable Intel ME 11 via undocumented NSA "High Assurance Platform" mode, Blackhat Dec 2017 presentation, Intel ME CVEs (CVSS Scored 9.0-10.0)Intel CPU Backdoor Report
Backdoor removal:
The backdoor firmware can be removed by following this guide using the me_cleaner script.
Removal requires a Raspberry Pi (with GPIO pins) and a SOIC clip.2017 Dec Update:
Intel ME on recent CPUs may be disabled by enabling the undocumented NSA HAP mode.Decoding Intel backdoors:
The situation is out of control and the Libreboot/Coreboot community is looking for BIOS/Firmware experts to help with the Intel ME decoding effort. If you are skilled in these areas, download Intel ME firmwares from this collection and have a go at them, beware Intel is using a lot of counter measures to prevent their backdoors from being decoded (explained below).
