Opera would make more since the FirefoxIMO it'd make more since for Google to purchase Opera Software or at least team with them and use the Opera browser. - Google hasn't been shy about purchasing other companies (eg Picasa, Blogger, etc.)
Why? Well, first off Opera has the ability for non-registered members to make use of Google's text-based ads. This would allow Google to continue making a profit even from a "free browser", then there is of course the option to remove the banner if you purchase a license. Again, bringing in money for google.
The next reason I think it'd make since is because of M2, Opera's email client.
For those who have never used Opera or M2 you might be surprised to find out that GMail and M2 share a lot of the same concepts (almost identical).- No folders

Re:Roland Piquepaille!
No, it seems michael and timothy OK a majority of the submissions, but a lot of editors have approved him.
Check out Roland's list of submissions! 20- that's right, TWENTY articles accepted in the last 8 weeks!!!
I have personally gotten only two submissions accepted in the last five months. I'm sure some people would complain that is still too many, but at least I'm not a blog whore like Roland Piquepaille or Sal Cangeloso who submits stories from his site (He pretends not to be the author of these articles that he found "enjoyable"). -

I miss the sense of community on pre-Web BBSes
What first drew me online and kept me excited for years was the sense of community that people had in the BBS scene before the rising popularity of the Web. Despite many attempts at creating this same feeling on the web from AIM, to Craigslist, Friendster, gMail to even Slashdot or Kuro5hin, I have not been able to develop the same type of relationships. It seems almost bizarre to suggest that a global online community could have a BBQ or meet for dinner at a local fast food restaurant.
People like Jom Jennings of FidoNet and Scott Converse of OneNet really deserve to be recognized by organizations like the VCF. The communities they fostered, perhaps because local dial-up networks kept everything provincal, are probably what I miss about the modern Internet with its spammers, phishers, con artists, Patriot Act, unsecure email and general lack of polite behavior. More than anything else, this misplaced sense of community is what I miss about the early days online. -
Sounds Complicated
I hear that they are going to save money by hosting the entire database in a couple of GMail accounts.

Ransomware...
First we had shareware, then we had freeware, now we have ransomware...
I'm not sure that I'm so happy with the recent trend in software development. The whole idea of ransomware is a bit, shall we say, reprehensible. I'm happy for all of the projects that have finally made it to open source, but there are many more that were abandoned, and could have become something if people hadn't just gotten tired and gave up.
We all know (or should know), that the GPL isn't a philosophy, it's a contract. But it comes from an idea. That which says that pooling our work in software development is better for all of us, including myself when I write something to release, or you when I use something of yours.
There are many companies who are trying to find the "loopholes" in the GPL. It's companies who try to find ways to hamper the use of their code to make it more worthwhile to purchase their product. Some companies to it to greater or lesser degrees. Like the guys who publish the WineX CVS sources, but threaten to shut it down if anyone tries to make it easy to build from there. (Shut down Gentoo project, anyone?)
But the ransomware idea is step below even them, as they won't even go that far, instead demanding payment before giving back. If you're going to do that, you might as well go closed source, because trying to cash in on our good will is just that, trying to cash in.
If you really believe what you say, and want to put it out, and want the good will of the open source community, put the code up in escrow, such that if you stop updating frequently, it will go open source as well, then I will gladly help you along with the ransomware thing. (And this is meant directly for the Devil Whiskey developer. If you escrow your code, I'll put up and pay the $25 for your software, even though I have no intention of actually playing.) Until then, it's just extortion...
And for those who wonder how I can be self righteous, I'm a software developer, and yes, I've released the source to one software project so far, and it was TPOP, a Tivo email client, which I had to drop development of when I sold my Tivo to move to France. I'm constantly starting little projects at home, and the next one that I code to more than just a skeleton phase will get open sourced as well..
(I'm currently working on a webmail system inspired by both GMail and CSS ZenGarden, I'm really hoping this one gets off the ground).

He thought so....when he wrote it.
SpaceCanary writes "I recently wrote this open letter to Windows and I think it's pretty funny. I wrote a letter to my OS as if I was breaking up with it. It's a bit strange, but finally more people are starting to see the light and moving away from Windows - in fact 100% of the people living in my mom's basement have switched. I chronicled my relationship with the versions of Windows and finally I am able to move on in the end."

Yay
Another example of the age old technique of profiting off dumbasses, this time by charging them money to do what they usually do for free, or could quite adequately automate for free.

Google does evil everyday they hire from Stanford
Well, it probably hurt that you werent some uppity Stanfordite. No wonder you got kicked out. It's one thing to have preference as a person to their college, it's another to base your entire company around the people from there and the practices of said university. Given how Google was, it's no surprise we have some of their side jobs as they are. Uppity people in need of a constant humbling.

Re:More info here....
With Google Groups 2, Gmail, and Orkut, Google has proven that they have three distinguishing characteristics in any new marketplace.
- People who know JavaScript well.
- Server errors.
- A legion of fans who brush away the server errors by saying "It's BETA! What do you expect?!"
A year from now, when My Google and Google Messenger launch, Google will be nothing other than a less graphical, more geeky version of Yahoo!. The Slashdot crowd will tire of the new sell-out "evil" Google and move on to another search engine. I suggest Teoma. It's unpopular, so it must be good.

Re:why is this in any way importantI don't use Yahoo for the search engine. I do use it for the email (occasionally) the mapping & directions (not perfect but usually provides a workable starting point), yellow pages, the occasional news story linked from a forum thread and other things.
And labs.google.com if your curious
And always remember to, run linux, switch friends to firefox, read slashdot, hate the DMCA, support the EFF, drink the GNU koolaid, and profit. -
