Re:I don't understand all the anger over Google
How about a gmail interface that can be used on small screens with large text?
You mean the new Gmail look that coexisted with the easily selectable old Gmail look for a year?
Have you noticed that lots of people -- google included -- now make sections of the browser window fixed, non-scrollable
You mean css position: fixed? Yeah, no website ever used that in the good old days.
1. Find documents not in any directory. You know: Everything you create goes in the root, not in any folder -- not changable. Anything you've classified or categorized with folders/tags is organized. Anything not so classified got lost. Suddenly, docs went from each to work with to painful.
Bullshit. Also, the service still exists. Are you saying they should never update it in any way? (insert this comment in all answers below)
2. A choice between page-layout oriented editing and free-form / web-page oriented editing. In fairness, this one was announced.
View -> Print layout.
3. A mail interface usable on smaller windows. Heck, a mail interface that doesn't assume it has the full screen.
You mean like the myriad of mobile versions that exist? Try http://m.gmail.com/
Or the basic HTML view? https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html (admittedly, this one should be more accessible)4. Usability by people who need large fonts.
5. Usability by people with a low pixel count.
These are pretty much the same as 3. We get it, you have a small screen.
Google changes the display layout all the time. As they do, with no warning they break things.
I have to say that I disagree with 'all the time', but the more important point is that webbased interfaces are inherently auto-update, unless you run them from your servers you manage. I don't know any other supplier of webbased services that announces (big) changes as well as Google. You're free to provide an example of a company that 'does it right'.
In the mean time, I suggest that you switch to desktop applications instead of web applications. You obviously have issues with the latter.I should not have to try to decipher their web page style to write a new style sheet code for the way I want the interface to look and function.
FTFY.

Re:That *niche* market.
LARGE enterprises run their own BES.
"RIM hasn't (and can't) give away the BES keys because the enterprise has them not RIM."
Are you sure? What's to stop RIM from putting in their own backdoor? The security from a system like that is necessarily LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO, not MORE THAN (as the GP claimed) any other solution you install yourself. If you use a closed VPN or sIMAP server you get approximately equal security, if you use an open one you get better security.
"But complaining about RIM having the keys to BIS is as foolish as complaining google has access to the encryption keys to https://www.gmail.com/ [gmail.com]"
Not foolish at all. I don't use gmail for anything sensitive either (and I work in health research, so I do actually send sensitive data occasionally). In fact, it's contrary to US, European, Canadian and international law to use gmail for certain things, BECAUSE Google has the encryption keys.
-
Re:That *niche* market.
Bull. The very fact that RIM CAN give away the keys to governments (or whoever they like) means their security wasn't very good.
You don't know what you are talking about.
They gave away the keys to BIS. That's the service they HOST THEMSELVES used mostly by individuals and small companies who don't want to host their own server. Of course they have the keys for it.
BES (blackberry enterprise server) is the enterprise service. Enterprises run their own BES on their own hardware under their own control. RIM doesn't touch it. RIM hasn't (and can't) give away the BES keys because the enterprise has them not RIM.
But complaining about RIM having the keys to BIS is as foolish as complaining google has access to the encryption keys to https://www.gmail.com/

Re:Yes, I know this is off-topic
GreatBunzinni, real name Rui Maciel, has been using anonymous posts and sockpuppets to accuse nearly 20 people of being employed by a PR firm to astroturf Slashdot, without any evidence. Using his sockpuppets, he mods up these anonymous posts while modding down the accused in order to filter their viewpoints. GreatBunzinni accidentally outed himself as the anonymous troll who has been posting these accusations. For example, he wrote the same post almost verbatim, first using his logged-in account followed by an anonymous post days later. Note the use of the same script and wording.
It turns out GreatBunzinni is a 31-year-old C++/Java programmer from Almada, Portugal named Rui Maciel, with a civil engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico and a hobby working with electronics. He runs Kubuntu and is active on the KDE mailing list. Rui Maciel has accounts at OSNews, Launchpad, ProgrammersHeaven, the Ubuntu forums, and of course Slashdot.
Most of the users who Rui targets have done nothing else but criticize Google for something or praise a competitor. Many of them are subscribers who get the first post because subscribers see stories earlier than non-subscribers. After one of Rui's accusations gets posted, the original post receives a surge of "Troll" and "Overrated" moderations from his sockpuppets, while Rui's posts get modded up. Often, additional anonymous posters will appear to give support and receive upmods. At the same time, accused users who defend themselves are modded "Offtopic."

Mod manipulation by GreatBunzinni, aka Rui Maciel
GreatBunzinni, real name Rui Maciel, has been using anonymous posts to accuse almost 20 accounts of being employed by a PR firm to astroturf Slashdot, without any evidence. Using multiple puppet accounts, he mods up these anonymous posts while modding down the target accounts in order to censor their viewpoints off of Slashdot. GreatBunzinni accidentally outed himself as the anonymous troll who has been posting these accusations to every Slashdot story. For example, he wrote the same post almost verbatim, first using his logged-in account followed by an anonymous post days later. Note the use of the same script and wording.
It turns out GreatBunzinni is actually a 31-year-old C++/Java programmer from Almada, Portugal named Rui Maciel, with a civil engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico and a hobby working with electronics. He runs Kubuntu and is active on the KDE mailing list. Rui Maciel has accounts at OSNews, Launchpad, ProgrammersHeaven, the Ubuntu forums, and of course Slashdot.
Most of the users who Rui targets have done nothing more than commit the sin of praising a competitor to Google at some point in the past. Many of them are subscribers who often get the first post, since subscribers see stories earlier than non-subscribers. After one of Rui's accusations is posted as a reply, the original post receives a surge of "Troll" and "Overrated" moderations from his puppet accounts, while the accusatory post gets modded up. Often, additional anonymous posters suddenly pop up to give support, which also receive upmods. At the same time, accused users who defend themselves are modded down as "Offtopic."

While trolling Slashdot, he listens to rock music like Motorhead, Fu Manchu, and Iron Maiden, but lately he's been on a big Jimi Hendrix kick, with some Bootsy Collins on the side (as you might have guessed, he has a Last.fm account). He's also a fan of strategy games like Vega Strike and Transport Tycoon.
Most of the users Rui targets have done nothing more than commit the sin of praising competitors to Google or other Linux-based products at some point in the past. Some of them are subscribers who often get the first post, since subscribers see stories earlier than non-subscribers.

Trolling campaign by GreatBunzinni, aka Rui Maciel

Trolling campaign by GreatBunzinni, aka Rui Maciel
GreatBunzinni, real name Rui Maciel, has been regularly accusing almost 20 accounts of being employed by a PR firm to astroturf Slashdot, via anonymous comments without any evidence. Using multiple puppet accounts, he mods up these anonymous posts while modding down the target accounts in order to censor their viewpoints off of Slashdot. Re:I am a Google engineer
Ethics @ Google?
They are one of the biggest UK/EU tax dodgers. They don't give back to society. Ever hear about the Double Dutch Sandwich?
You mean unlike other ethical companies like Microsoft?
I am an employee for one of the biggest American ex-HF/Bank in London, but from a moral perspective I feel Google is as transparent as the banks.
Then clearly you have never worked @ Google.
Use your head.
Google are common thieves and are like all the fat cats we love to hate, but really if we look inside things we all know how they can afford to give you free swimming pool or pay you 500K USD per year...
I dunno, maybe because we put out high quality products that people actually like using?
Just don't go around like a peacock as the typical American who likes to show his salary, thinking you really are paid with don't be evil money.
Of course, the reason I posted anonymously is because I want to show off my salary. BTW, I am NOT American.
When you know the true reality about all this huge Ponzi scheme which is the global economy, and know Google is part of it, then probably I guess you'd feel a bit ashamed.
This is rich coming from a guy who admits he works for an American financial institution. Clearly, as everyone knows, Google is responsible for the state of the global (and US) economy, and not the American financial institutions .
What a sad sad world we live in.
I agree, which is precisely why I am thankful that I can work for a company like Google. Maybe you should consider not working for an American bank in London?

Google already patented that for GMail with Google Motion.

Doing it wrong
I'm looking to build a family tree for a holiday gift. Do the Slashdotters of the world have any recommendations on open source genealogy software? I did try a 14-day free trial of Ancestry.com. What a scam! I submitted the personal information for my parents, grandparents, and me. Then, I received a pop-up telling me that if I would like to get information on my family, I would have to upgrade my subscription for $29.95 U.S. So, I took the chance. Turns out that the only information they had was my previous addresses for the past 20 years.
If you are paying for Ancestry and it does not have any information on your family except previous addresses for the past 20 years, then you're not doing your research properly (or you don't live in the US, UK, or a couple other countries).
At a minimum, they have basically every birth record in the US for who knows how long. You should have at least been able to find that. Then, if you're including anyone who lived in the United States in 1930 or prior to that, then you can also find all federal census records showing siblings, ages, race, frequently the type of job the person had, parents or parents' nation/state of birth, etc.
I could go on about it (Ancestry has been so helpful to me and others I know), but the long and short of it is, if you're doing a family tree, you paid Ancestry, and can only find residence locations, then you're either (1) not in the US; (2) the first immigrant to the US from your family; or (3) not doing it right. Considering Ancestry had your residence locations, it's most likely (3).
Well, I suppose there's a fourth: you've already got an encyclopedic knowledge of your family history, so no amount of research would turn up anything new.
In fact, I'll go so far as to say that if you want my help during your 14-day trial, OP (or anyone else w/Ancestry), respond to this message or email me at ancestrymasterman@gmail.com (new semi-throwaway email addy).

Re:What a joke.
Is capsplendid@gmail.com your email address?

The reason.
The reason why the Sun's cycle is lasting longer than expected has been known by the astronomers and astrophysicists for many years, it's just that there is a news blackout on the subject. Have you also noticed that we have had record breaking weather around the World now for several years? Now, there is a gag order on reporting the weather records being broken. How about the Volcanoes, have you noticed the increase? I'm not just talking about Eyjafjallajoekull in Iceland, there 2 now active in Ecuador right now alone. How about the sensational (unexplained) sky swirl in Norway? Odd, don't you think? What's up with the Sink holes in the Eastern U.S. and how about the melting glaciers and pole ice? These and many more unusual Earth events are happening but the public doesn't really get to find out, as the USGS, U.S.Navy or NASA control your access to the information. Please, don't bother with the IOCC status quo pablum they've been pushing for years. Do you think that C.C. is gonna explain the Norway? The Volcanoes now? Take that out of the equation. I've been telling this story since '08, it is a highly magnetic small brown dwarf in the solar system with it's South pole pointed at the Sun for the last few years sucking out the magnetron particles and softening the Sun's normal cycle. Soon it will break free of the ecliptic, and Slashdot will be no more. Survivable though. subscribe to my newsletter to get the details. Chris Thomas.
