Re:How about a new name?
I know Slashdotters have been complaining about the name for years. But really, how much effort would you be willing to put into pressuring the authors to change the name?
I talked to them once. They think that you guys are lunatics and that they have absolutely no reason to listen to you. I even got banned for asking the question. So would you really be willing to do something about it, instead of just complaining on Slashdot? -
Banned from #gimp
Interestingly, I was banned from the #gimp IRC channel (actually, banned from the entire GIMPnet IRC network) for reminding the GIMP people about these complaints about the name. Was I being a jerk or are the GIMP developers really elitist like people on Slashdot usually claim?

Re:Google
I like google groups better than the google linux search, but I don't think either are the best sites. IMHO any site that purports to have all answers to all linux questions isn't going to do very well with any semi-complex question. They just can't have the know-how.
IRC channels are good, but it is kind of like IM - if the devs aren't on you're out of luck.
I think it really depends on the distro. For Ubuntu, there is Ubuntu forums for SuSE there are SuSE forums. The same goes for Gentoo, Mepis, Debian, Redhat, Fedora or any other distro out there. The larger projects also have their own forums.
Getting as specific a location as you can will help (e.g. the google group on Debian is better than the one on Linux users for Debian problems). That is why IRC is great when you have a reasonably well-researched and specific question. Before you ask a dev (who may be working on fixing the problem, or may have already fixed it, or may be plagued by the same question over and over again) please read how to ask a question properly. That way you are maximizing the chance that you get the right answer, people won't get mad at you, and you won't be wasting anyone else's time. -
Similar situation, only with SuseThree weeks ago I received a shiney new Dell Latitude D810 for a new position within my company. For the record, my company is a 100% Microsoft Windows shop. Since I have some Linux experience on the server side (and some nifty ceritifcation papers from Redhat to line my birdcage with), I decided to bite the bullet and try using a Linux distro as my full time desktop.
I chose Suse 10 since it's fairly new and I knew I'd need support for newer technologies (wireless, etc).
So far, I've only ran into a few problems... Wireless WPA-EAP connectivity being the biggest issue. I haven't been able to get it straightened out. In fact, wireless support on Linux (in my experience) has been flakey, sometimes it works perfectly and other times it's an exercise in frustration. And with Suse 10, there are a few annoying bugs that crop up, but for the most part they're survivable.
The number one issue I've seen while trying to run Suse as my business desktop in a 100% MS Windows world has been the 'compatibility curve'. Something it would take me 10 seconds to do in XP sometimes takes me 10 minutes (half the time simply due to my unfamiliarity with the distro/Linux desktop environment, the other half reconfiguration time just to make it compatible).
It isn't for the lazy or undetermined, but it can be done. There's something to be said for taking the road less traveled, and in the end I'm sure I'll be richer for the experience.
Or fired.

Not insightful
Bah, frankly I'm tired of people modding things like this "Insightful".
Are you completely ignorant to reality? The Internet is like the real world: there are bad places, but there are also good places! If you get flamed down at an IRC channel, big deal. Move on to a good channel where people are willing to help you.
Saying that everybody in the Linux community tells you RTFM just because someone from a certain channel said that is like saying every human is a thief because a certain human is a thief. It's a completely wrong generalization.
An excellent Linux support forum would be the ComputerTotaal Forum (Dutch). People have been very helpful to me ever since 1999. People will Linux software and hardware problems are never flamed down.
Just take a look at the GNOME and KDE mailing lists. Do you see RTFM anywhere? I don't.
Take a look at the GNOME support forums. Where do you see newbies getting flamed down?
In other words:
Stop spreading the RTFM-myth! -
Re:Spatial Nautilus?
In the very latest build (as in, today's), there's a pref for Spatial/Browser mode in Nautilus. The trick to using the spatial Nautilus is making good use of the keyboard shortcuts. Or if you don't like that, remember that the middle mouse button opens the new child folder while closing the parent at the same time. This gives IMO all of the nice benefits of spatiality (positions and size are always remembered), without any more windows than normal.

Re:I know you are joking but...
well, currently FooBarWidget has been keeping his own version of the GTK+ Fileselector. It's meant as a replacement for 2.2.4 (and up I think).
There's a thread on gnomesupport.org for more information. As far as I know, it just replaces that part of the gtk library. -

My prediction : KDE 3.2 will slaughter Gnome!
Don't just take my word for it, download the Mandrake's 10.0 alpha and see KDE 3.2 beta today, combined with Kernel 2.6, this baby is FASTER than the boxes!
Anyway, here is more reasons why Gnome will be Killed!
Gnome Zealot Translate-o-matic 2004
Ever since Gnome 2.4 (and the BETA 2.5) was released, I have found more and more gnome zealots who MUST absolutely advocate GNOME at every possible moment. Here is a guide to some of their claims, and what they really mean.
Claim : Unlike KDE, Gnome is free

and Sun to have propeitry forks and lock away their changes from the user. Now
that Novell has taken over Ximian you can expect Gnome to get put under
corpirate lock. With KDE you have the choice, you either PAY UP or pay with
your source code. Most companies agree, the majority of commerical software for Linux is written in Motif and Qt, and NOT GTK. Apart from Ximian's desktop, there is no major product using GTK.
Claim : Nautilus is much better than konqueror.
Wrong, if your using nautilus for anything more than a simple finder clone you
can forget it. No split screen, no ioslaves (gnome-vfs can't compare, sorry) and forget about being able to
have a decent file dialog, not to forget that it is as unstable as hell and is
STILL slow on >3 Ghz machines. The latest version decided to copy Windows 95, complete with a my computer icon on the desktop.
Claim : Gnome is easier to use than KDE
Yep, nothing like using gconf-editor to edit all except the most trivial of
settings. Want tear off menus? Want a useable file dialog? You won't find it
here. Gnome was a lot more usable back in the 1.4 series, before sun came along with their usabillity "study".

Why isn't there Epiphany and Nautilus for OSX?
Because the Gnome guys don't want to see the ugly GTK file dialog on a beutiful OS like OSX. You will never see a Gnome Zealot use OSX!

Why KDE intergration is bad for Gnome.
Ever since Gnome 2.4 was released, I have found more and more gnome zealots
who MUST absolutely advocate GNOME at every possible moment. Here is a guide
to some of their claims, and what they really mean.
Unlike KDE, Gnome is free
Translation : GPL is freerer than LGPL. LGPL allows corporations like Novell
and Sun to have propeitry forks and lock away their changes from the user. Now
that Novell has taken over Ximian you can expect Gnome to get put under
corpirate lock. With KDE you have the choice, you either PAY UP or pay with
your source code.
Nautilus is much better than konqueror.
Wrong, if your using nautilus for anything more than a simple finder clone you
can forget it. No split screen, no ioslaves and forget about being able to
have a decent file dialog, not to forget that it is as unstable as hell and is
STILL slow on >3 Ghz machines.
Gnome is easier to use
Yep, nothing like using gconf-editor to edit all except the most trivial of
settings. Want tear off menus? Want a useable file dialog? You won't find it
here.
Gnome has eye candy
Yes, my pirated Win32 fonts with the patent infringing font renderer. Bit
stream vera sans looks like Tahoma put through a shreadder! Of course I still
reboot into windows to print using "Comic Sans MS.
Gnome has a new web browser
Yawb! Along with Galeon, mozilla, thunderbird, konqueror, atlantis, lynx,
netscape and w3m. Yes I need another browser! Not to mention that its got a
religiously offensive name and it dosen't allow bookmark folders. It also
crashes like a crazy! Apple chose khtml for a REASON! its stable and light!
For newbies, Gnome is the ideal choice
Despite the fact that the only mainstream Gnome based distro has been EOL'd,
and all the newbie distros such as Mangadrake, Lindoze, $u$E, Lycoris,
Xandroze, Gentoo use kde default, the Local unix geek showed me Debian, which
installed Gnome 1.4 by default, so it must be good if he uses it.

Because Gnome is too buggy.

Debunking the Linux FUD!
There is a lot of FUD going on about linux, and some of it is NOT TRUE ANYMORE! Don't believe it! If you use a "31337" distro like Debian or Slackware, then of course youre going to see the problems, but civilised ditrobutions don't!
There is NO NEED to edit raw text files! All major distros have decent configuation utillities these days!
There is NO DEPEDANCY hell! That only happens if you try to install a broken package using the raw rpm utillity! If you install it the proper way, EG with yast, Rpmdrake, Synaptic, redcarpet then no problems!
Hardware dectection works flawlessly. If your having a problem your hardware is either broken or your using an out of date kernel (ie debian). Many major hardware manufacturers are working with kernel development team to get support for their hardware in linux, and the ones that don't are getting reverse engineered pretty quickly!
X, OpenOffice, Nautilus are no longer SLOW! They have been optimized and they work at high speeds!
The RTFM culture is dying, most distrobutions come with printed easy to understand documentation, and there are lots of quality forums and howtos out there! The Gentoo ones are a good example, as wellls as gnome-support, KDE forum, and others!
The fact that ists hard to use isn't true either! Gnome and KDE are both freindly, you want hard? try Ratpoison or TWM! Linux is ready for joe, and all thats left now is to debunk the fud and get joe to try it! So get a knoppix iso, and start showing HOW easy linux is to all the joes and grandmas you know! -
Re:GNOME: Armageddon
Nice to see you can copy stuff from other sites. Moderators, please think stuff when you moderate, don't moderate high because it's a long comment. This is a lengthy comment posted 37 minutes after the article went live (by an AC none the less). It's lengthy, covers many topics and is linkified, also by my count it's 2856 words. That means the person had to have written this at a rate of about 106 words a minute. While some on the community can type that fast when working from a stream of consciousness or transcribing, it's REALLY hard to do for extended periods, especially when developing new thoughts.

Re:well,
Try this new file selector patch for GTK+ 2.2.2. It has shortcut navigation buttons, the location box allows typing, and you can see metadata like file icon, file type, size and date.

Re:Wow.
Try this new file dialog for GTK+ 2.2.2. It has bookmarks support and a back button, making it easier to navigate.

Re:Problems with gnome 2.3 (the 2.4 beta)
1) File dialog.
The current GTK+ file dialog *cannot* be changed without breaking compatibility. A new file dialog is under development for GTK+ 2.4, for quite a while now. But GTK+ 2.4 will not make it before the GNOME 2.4 release.
If you want a slightly better file dialog (with Back button, Home button, Bookmarks, etc.) but is still compatible with all the current apps, take a look at this patch:
http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=363 5
2) Galeon.
Galeon never was a part of GNOME 2. At one point they had to choose a browser so they chose Epiphany because it's goals are like GNOME's. There's nothing stopping you from installing Galeon yourself. I'm typing this in Galeon right now.
3) Extract Here
I agree with you on this. Email the File Roller author, not Slashdot.
4) Panel size
Why click 20 times? Just focus the spinbox and type in whatever number you want using your keyboard. As for the goat logo, how's that a usability issue? Users don't care what logo they see in the about box (if they look at all).
5) Media player
GStreamer doesn't "suck", it's just not finished yet. Xine is not "superior", it's different. GStreamer is a very ambitious project, and is like Windows's DirectShow. It's not just for playing files, it's an entire multimedia framework, which includes things like recording and encoding. I don't see Xine doing something like that.
What's stopping you from installing MPlayer (not Windows Media Player!) or Xine or whatever? I installed MPlayer, setup some associations and everything works perfectly.
Anyway, I don't know why you say 2.4 isn't as good as 2.2. Except for Extract Here, none of the features in 2.2 are removed, some features just didn't make it to 2.4. -
Re:The end of GNOME.
I prefer using CVSGnome it's written by me and works perfectly. Not to mention that I trusts it more than anything else.

GNOME GConf == Windows Registry on it's worst
Read here about why people think there are so many disadvantages withing GConf. If you hated Windows Registry then you hate Gnome GConf Registry even more.
-
GNOME ResistanceIn the past couple of days a lot of highly interesting Messages arrived on this
Forum. Messages such as 'Why GConf' and 'GNOME Armageddon'.
(It was meant to reflect the GNOMESUPPORT.ORG forum)
here, here and here
First I was a bit
sceptic while reading them but I quickly found out that the writers of these
Messages are totally right in many of their points. This encouraged me to start
the 'GNOME Resistance' because of the ugly attitute of some people here on this
Forum. As many of you probably read - some people have tried to ask and point
out, why they don't like the GConf Registry mechanism by writing some feedback
but people like Iain Holmes (One of the major GNOME contributors) was as
usually able to turn the good Thread into some worthless object by turning
facts, by not listening to users, by ignoring facts and by staying hardheaded
and narrowminded. He also wrote that one of the writers is the ONLY one that
doesn't like GConf but that's definately and prooven not the case. At the end
the Thread got locked because the Forum maintainer was disagreeing as well.
This really confirms what's written in the Armageddon text. Unforunately I have
seen such behaviours on many other Forums, in the IRC-Channel and on
Mailinglists. The developers of GNOME don't give their users a chance to
explain their concerns because it usually ends in flames. It's happening over
and over again. What options do we user actually have ? We are only allowed to
bravely write bugreports to GNOME to help their companies getting all bugs
fixed as quickly as possible. For these tasks we are good enough but as soon as
we want to discuss some serious things, the comments are being ignored. We
can't even contribute one serious comment how we users like to see GNOME if we
don't agree with the developers then we are trolls. We are getting already
decided things thrown infront of our faces that we should report bugs for but
comments are not welcome.
If we start some serious feedback on the only few places we could do it then
our feedback will turn into flames, get Modded down or they get Locked. What
do you people think about all this ? We have absolutely no other possibilities
than writing what we think. If even this isn't allowed then the only solution
for us people is to FIGHT BACK. Comments are not welcome, feedback is not
welcome, we can't even convince the developers because they don't like to
accept compromises.
This encourages me to call all people outside that made the same experience to
stand up and FIGHT BACK, what do we people lose ? We are getting ignored
anyways. Stand up and make GNOME look bad in the public, that's what actually
GNOME is. GNOME 2 had a lot of weird changes that probably will not get changed
with GNOME 2.2 or any future versions. Let's face the truth as much as we wish
things to change, as much as we belive that things will settle down - it's an
illusion. The GNOME that we all liked is no more. Some things with GNOME 2 went
for the better but a lot of stuff went bad.
Thanks for all the development GNOME developers but for me it is no more. I
hope that enough people have the courage to stand up and hit hard back. I know
this all sounds unfair and trollish but what you do to us is unfair too so I
can't see any big difference here. -

can't even contribute one serious comment how we users like to see GNOME if we
don't agree with the developers then we are trolls.
Not again...This is how you know that you spend your time on too many forums. This guy has been posting this same message everywhere, always anonomously. I caught it the other day on gnomesupport and everyone there was talking about how he's off his rocker.
It's hard to put any kind of faith into someone who won't even post their name or drop a fake email address alongside their scathing, ill-informed piece of slander that they are spreading around like a virus. My theory is that it's some kid who was attempting to write code for gnome and was asked to leave because the quality of the code was around the same quality as the grammar and punctuation in this post. Don't buy this crap.
