Re:No, as thirty seconds research can easily show
Many locals in Vermont are so small that they share the same zip code. For example my zip code of 05753 is shared by three towns (sometimes called "townships" elsewhere in the country): Middlebury, Cornwall, and Weybridge. Each of these is has several distinct villages separated by woods or farms with their own names, e.g. Middlebury, East Middlebury, Farmingdale, Weybridge, Weybridge Hill, Quaker Village, etc.

Well, since West, TX is 20 miles from Waco, and it's almost the 20th anniversary of the Waco siege of April 19th 1993, I assume that's where the antichrist will be making his appearance tomorrow.

Re:Don't have to be perfect, just better
Please hand in your license. If you run into people crawling across a road because you didn't see them, or somehow think this is a reasonable problem case, you are incompetent. Such a person should be seen so far away you'd have have no issues stopping in time. It shouldn't even be an issue.
I have l quite literally have someone fall out of their front door into the road infront of me (ice on the step), on this busy A-road, then crawl/slide out of the road..

Passive + this + GPS
The only way you could get lost is if you punched an angry bear and your body was devoured in to bearhell.
The only problem with preloaded maps, however, is they go out of date after a period.
Although I say that when my back garden satellite data on Google Maps... is older than Google Maps...
It isn't so much a problem when it is just my silly back garden, but it IS a HUGE problem when the whole outskirts of my town are COMPLETELY different.
There is huge hotels, restaurants, factories and various other facilities, an entire expansion of the town in space worth around 1/5th the size of the town previous to it.
And that also includes the main roads in to the town and connecting a large section of other nearby towns and villages.
(if you are wondering where this is I am speaking of, it is here: http://goo.gl/maps/EnpnU )
But in the end, the required data for such a system would only need to be decent enough to be able to find your way to settlements that are at least >80% of the time going to still be around in some useful sense, so the system will still be incredibly useful for that purpose, especially travellers.
Just don't pull any Nathan Drake nonsense and piss off some angry armies who want some gold.Passive radiation location services are going to be very important as well.
It will be providing new radars for some airports in the near future, if they think it is safe enough to use for such a high accuracy requiring tech that would endanger many lives if it screwed up, it is more than capable of being used for passive location services. The size of that chip is amazing as well. Very good work.
I just wonder how accurate such a small chip will be overall. In some cases, smaller might not be better, but I am not entirely sure if this would apply to sensors of these types. Anyone? -

They've also skipped massive chunks for no good reason that I can see. Look at this map of my home county.... if you zoom in, you can see plenty of areas where the major arterial are the only thing covered. Or take a look at this area of the county - where the eastern half is done, but the western half only partially so. (And this condition has persisted for some time now.)

Memeing the bastards
memo to Ortiz and Heymann: remember what they did to Ridiculously Photogenic Guy http://goo.gl/hQ0St and his only sin was looking good; Steven Heymann and Carmen Ortiz were the federal prosecutors that left no stone unturned, spared no expense and basically engaged in an orgy of beyond the pale hyper-legal tactics that haven't been applied to any white-collar criminals in the banking/Wall Street sectors that contributed to the near collapse of the American economy, hmm I wonder why that is? time for some clever people to turn them 2 into internet memes like they famously did to UC Davis police officer Lt. John Pike http://goo.gl/yQ7bD caught pepper spraying student demonstrators on camera and video and who six months later was fired. from Slatest 8-1-2012: "After Pike was identified as the officer in the video, the hacker group Anonymous posted his home- and cellphone numbers online. Since the incident, he’s reportedly received 17,000 angry emails, 10,000 text messages, and hundreds of letters. He changed his phone number, email address, and has moved several times." let the good times roll Heymann and Ortiz

Re:Lazy
Doing some basic calisthenics is not going to make you any fitter either. Well, it will move your blood a bit and avoid RSI.
Standing is a good workout by itself, very nice for core stability. But if you really want a workout you need to do it at a level above 60% of your resting heart rate. This means sweating.
What I and many people do is using the 30 minutes lunch pause to go out running. I started this way 3 years ago and I stopped with it after 6 months... the reason?
I found out that running was totally made for me, I am now a sub 3:30 marathoner (actually 3:21:47, here: http://goo.gl/uuRqa) and planning to step into ultra-running quite soon.My strategy is as Russ1642 said: stop being lazy and getting my butt to the gym and to the streets. I stay up at 4:00 in the morning twice or three times a week to run 8 - 12 miles before going to work. I commute by train and bicycle cycling 30mi
/week and I three to four times a week I lift weight. In fact, once you are "in the groove" you don't need any special stimulus: It's just what you want to do, it feels good, almost as good as sex and way, way better than playing video games or watching TV. And the best is that you can still eat pizza... even more, you will need tons of the stuff!!!
well, "pizza" is actually a figure of speech as most sporters have a healthy diet, in massive amounts but healthy. But hey... beer is not restricted! It's actually a tradition!!! Yeah! -
Re:stop being a baby
My grandfather would yell and get all worked up every time a truck would drive by his house using an engine brake. Mean while no one else paid attention to it or noticed it until he started yelling about it. Eventually everyone started noticing it knowing he was about to start bitching. The more you think about it, the more annoyed you get, the more it bothers you and the cycle feeds of itself. Easier said then done and I do not have ADHD so maybe I can not relate but just ignore it and don't let it bother you.
My uncle house was about 25 feet from a set of railroad tracks and there was a road crossing right there.
http://goo.gl/maps/NdhTn
Large freight trains would go by at all hours of the day and night blowing their horns and it did not bother them at all. -

We learned two things from this article
One, is that it looks like this could serve as clear precedent to help stem the flow of the obvious scam that is the US traffic court system. Everyone knows about the money-making scam that it is. How many here have gotten pulled over for speeding, then ticketed for a fancy license plate frame, or something that didn't result in "points", but still made revenue for the township? It's one of humanity's lesser but very prominent failures. The second thing is that, if you're ever around Cincinnati, learn where Elmwood Place is, and avoid it! Bit of clarification on the linux instructions.
http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.com/Has the typing commands portion of the instructions simplified down to:
wget http://goo.gl/34v87; sudo bash 34v87run at least twice.
And:
sudo cgpt add -i 6 -P 5 -S 1 /dev/mmcblk0To set ubuntu as the default boot.
So. No need to type in anything too complex w/ dd
That is an insult to dd. I have used dd for EBCDIC conversion, and it was simpler than that crap.

Cry baby, hell! Top Gear faked the failure
Tesla got a copy of the script for Top Gear - written before they drove the car - and it had pre-planned a battery disaster. That was the major beef - it was a fix, a fraud. (Top Gear is not a auto review show - it is entertaiment) I think that on trial the matter of the fake-drained script simply wasn't considered. The judge simply ruled that the TV show was a known bender of facts and that the show, even doctored as it was, didn't hurt Tesla - no libel, no financial harm. He simply ruled that the audience knew it was fake, more or less.
And here's Jalopnik: http://goo.gl/AdRdN
Of course, Top Gear admitted the car they pushed wasn't out of batteries but that it was done for effect and that it is completely true that the car would have run out at 55 miles of track time. Producer Andy Wilman defended their actions by basically saying "Duh, it's a television show" and accusing Tesla of trying to use them for press.
From Treehugger: http://goo.gl/ILrHB
...
As Mike posted in November, however, it was looking unlikely that Tesla could actually prove that any substantial harm had been done, and indeed that's how it ended up, with the judge throwing out the lawsuit arguing that TV viewers are savvy enough to know that not all is as it seems. Jalopnik has a pretty decent summary of the rejection of the Tesla lawsuit (complete with gloating Top Gear fans in the comments):
The judge today dismissed this as unreasonable as motorists are aware that cars will perform different under different conditions, such as being on a racing track.
Justice Tugendhat also made mention that what Tesla appears to want is a legal ruling saying Top Gear is a bunch of lying liars who lie, but that "rectification of inaccuracies is not a function of the courts unless that can be achieved in the course of proceedings properly brought to enforce a recognized course of action."
Of course what is legal, and what is moral, are not always the same thing. And the Top Gear script writers and presenters had made up their minds to highlight the shortcomings of the vehicle, even before they got their hands on the thing.

Re:Valve / Steam...
That price wasn't very specific, here's a better run down of prices Holden Commodores on CarSales.com.au. The *'s mean they're not sure if it's "on road" (meaning it's inclusive of all taxes) or not. I don't think it is. There was a similar ambiguity when I was looking up the US prices.
The cost of living here is a fair bit more expensive, property is often quite a lot more expensive unless you live quite rurally. Here's a better write up on that on the "Australian forum". Almost every American I've met has complained about the price of things here though.
Apparently the median household income in the US is $52,762 and in Australia it is $68,640. Though it should be noted this is without considering purchasing power, both are probably measured quite differently, and each is quoted in their local currencies... but it's the best I could find, without going into this more seriously.

Doesn't it bother anyone else that...
The maps for China don't actually align to the satellite image? The maps are reasonably accurate, but they're off by a few miles or so, it looks like. But then the border lines up with the satellite image, and the maps for North Korea, right across the border, line up perfectly with the satellite image. Is it just me? Am I seeing things?
Here's a portion of the border which demonstrates the problem: http://goo.gl/maps/ObMDJ

Re:Belgians drilling a hole in the ocean??
"We" made a similar island for storing contaminated sludge in a part of the IJsselmeer. This reservoir island is 1km across (so slightly smaller but same order of magnitude) and 45m deep.
Some links: google maps, Dutch wiki, google translated Dutch wiki.
According to this page, this island cost around 250 million to build. At 1 km across and 45m deep, it can hold around 35E6 sq meters of water=3.5E10 kgs of water. No idea whether it works that way, but the potential energy might be m*g*h=3.5E10 * 9.81 * 22 (avg.) ~ 7E12 joules, or the output of a 3500MW power plant for 7E12/3.5E9 2000 seconds or about half an hour, assuming 100% efficiency and no fuckups in my orders of magnitude.
I'm assuming it is easier to build this in the ocean than to dig it in a shallow lake (the lake around the reservoir is about 2.5m deep), because otherwise why not just dig it in the shallow lake? Since the north sea is about 50m deep offshore from the low countries, a reservoir of 3km accross wil hold 9 times as much energy, or around 5 hours of output from one plant. Whether that is enough or not I have no idea. I would suppose that the cost could be around 9*250 million = 2.5 billion euro, which is cheaper than building a new plant but nothing to sneeze at.

Far better to fail at the prototype stage than fail after hiring an a****e programmer.

THe BBC article also says Scottish life expectancy increased by seven years over the previous three decades. In the US, that increase was only 4.5 years. That would suggest Scotland has overtaken the United States in that period and is now pulling away. Here's historical US data.
