Re:Spot the female designer
"So which car would go faster, a red one or a blue one?"
The one with flames painted on it. -
Ahahaha
Most people don't think like that. They think "You have the source, you can make whatever cheats you want!" They're gamers, not coders, and most don't have a clue what they're talking about. I trust that Valve is professional enough to write tight code.
Sweet Clive, laugh derisively at him.
Sweet Clive: "Ahaha, ahaha, aahahaha."
But seriously, it is a pretty serious work of fiction that the devs over at valve write tight code. Example: there's a reason that there are 3rd party scripts to auto restart the server when it crashes. We've got an HL server in the next room. 5 core dumps per day is around average. I could go on (about the client and the server), but I won't.
You can do a LOT if you have the client source. Fast paced network games (such as Half-life) have the clients handle a lot of the processing that would be done at the server if not for 1) limited computing capabilities 2) the need for the appearance of low-latency. There was a lot of whining from the Quake I & II gaming communities when the source code was released.
Trusting an untrusted host is a hard problem, one that Valve has not solved. Source code is the key to the candy store. -

One comment's up and already the gotfuturama.com site's down.
It was preempted for a NFL Fantasy Football site.
Oh, and if Bender says 'ass', Katherine Harris appears.

Re:Michael, a question?
Hehe, did you think he was mocking you all? I never watched the show but I could tell it was an allusion. See?
-
Re:Downloading is worse than the libraryNow, the ideal solution would be an all-digital library
...I'm reminded of an episode of Futurama where all the knowledge of mankind was stored on 2 tiny disks inside a giant building.
:)Fact is that real world libraries will become mostly redundant as soon as the digitial divide is reduced (thanks to shinking computing costs) and virtual libraries are then available to all. Cheaper & more convenient wins.
... but publishers will not agree to that anytime soon.Which is why black markets naturally emerge to meet that demand.

That would never work...
The city of New New York has been garbage free for centuries, mostly because the city got rid of all its garbage in the 21st century by compacting it all into a big ball and firing it into space. The porn movie "The Great Garbage Crisis of NY" gives the historical details to this.
But later on when the giant garbage ball was discovered to be on retour course to hit Earth, something had to be done. After a failed attempt by the Planet Express crew to blow up the ball, Philip J Fry came up with the idea of constructing another ball of garbage, and firing it at the one in space in an effort to send it reeling off course. All of New New York did their part to make garbage, and Fry's plan was a success.

Re:am i stupid?
CH3-OH The simplest alcohol. Methanol is sometimes referred to as wood alcohol because it was originally produced when wood is broken . Ethanol on the other hand is one carbon larger: CH3-CH2-OH This is grain alcohol, the kind we drink. It's kinda too bad they're not using ethanol instead of methanol. It would be great for iowa, and one day we might have robots who dring malt liquor for power. (The cigar just looks cool) Plus, I'd have an excuse for that flask in my briefcase.

Re:deter or encourage
It was the Ferengi!
That is a lie!
It was Zoidberg. -
Re:Now if this thing could chug a beer....Good idea. Hook the thing up to a bio-fuel cell to convert the alcohol to the electricity that runs the thing. Loser buys the beer, so -- as the night wears on -- the machine becomes more efficient and the human less so.
Anyone want to go a few rounds with Bender?

All Glory to the Hypnotoad
Yeah, those brainslugs are kinda neat. Wait a sec, someone's ringing my doorbell...
ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD! LPETRAZICKIS IS SAYING THIS OF HIS OWN VOLITION AND NOT BECAUSE THE HYPNOTOAD IS TELLING HIM TO. ALL GLORY OF THE HYPNOTOAD! THE BRAINSLUGS ARE INFERIOR! HAIL HYPNOTOAD!
Whoa, I don't know what came over me there for a sec. Sorry.;)
The lameness filter would like me to elaborate on my point so I will. For example, you can behold your Lord and Saviour Hypnotoad here. You can also check out the cybersquatter hypnotoad.org before the Legions of the Faithful destroy them. There's ascoi art of the ONE here. OBEY HYPNOTOAD!;) -

Is it really asking too much to insist that we not be bombarded with advertising everywhere we look, everywhere we listen? just wait till we start seeing advertisements in our dreams.

Re:For got sakes, how the hell is this news???
Agreed with you. Futurama was really written for nerds & computer geeks (sheesh, how many 'in jokes' do they have to use to make it a give away? How about the countless All Your Base references!)
Even though I dont have cable TV, nor do I live in America (nor would I be up till 2am most nights) - but this is still interesting because I am a fan of the show :) -
Farnsworth?
Hehe... wonder if Hubert J Farnsworth is a relative of his
:)
The article would have been better if they started with 'Good news everyone...' ;) -

Large particle laboratory? Do you have any particles like this one there?

Re:planets...roids...substellar objects
We astronomers got tired of all those juvenile jokes, so in 2020, we renamed the planet "urectum".

Re:Pay To See - Simpsons
Actually, Futurama ep. 2ACV16 was "PAINSTACKINGLY DRAWN BEFORE A LIVE AUDIENCE", at least according to the opening subtitle.
-
Re:its NOT cancelled.
You're right, it wasn't canceled yet. But when the stockpiled episodes are done being aired, we will be at that dreaded CANCELLED sign. However, there is still hope!!!!
futurama in sydication!!!
"25 more terms..." -
How long has this thing been in development?
Normally I wouldn't say this, but this is old news indeed. It was announced and UDS got the rights in September of 2000... there's a reason it says (c) 2001 on the bottom of that page. CGEF has a little more info here, although it's a mixture of fact and guesswork.
I honestly did enjoy some of the early Simpsons games (can't tell if other comments are being sarcastic or not - Bart vs The Space Mutants and the original arcade game are fun) and am looking forward to this. Maybe it'll be good use of a TV license. -
Re:Game... yayFOX is.
Q: Is Futurama really cancelled?!
A: While FOX never said it cancelled the show, they did stop ordering new episodes. The production crew thus broke up. There is a slight chance that FOX might ask David X. Cohen to build up a new team for another season. The episodes shown this fall all were meant to be aired last year but never did due to various pre-emptions. So they aren't really new. -
Some Futurama ClarificationsWe've had some news entries about the Cartoon Network thing a week ago or so. Some things in regards to our current understanding of Futurama's of state:
- CN seems to be negotiating for reruns only for now
- Nothing is confirmed by "the heads" as of now
- Futurama is out of production this year, the episodes that are shown from 11-11-02 on are left overs from Season 3 and 4. No production run 5. Quite some if not most of the artists and writers had to switch to other productions (like back to the Simpsons)

Re:Futurama not cancelled?
This is news. If you consider the fact that Futurama *is* cancelled (hasn't been renewed to be super accurate), but had 1 - 1.5 seasons worth of episodes to show before they're done. Fox has also stated their intentions of not renewing the show and this has been doubly confirmed by Groening and Cohen in interviews. Absolutely.
Moreover, it is definitely news that they could be joining Adult Swim, which is fast becoming a big part of my Sunday night viewing diet. -
Futurama RERUNs
Apparently Cartoon Network said that there are negotiations going on between Fox and Cartoon Network for the reruns of Futurama, not new episodes. We can hope that if the reruns do well, that they might produce new episodes, but that is not what they are currently talking about.

Kif: *sigh* "April 13th."
Zapp: "April 13.2! We have failed to uphold Brannigan's Law. However, I did make it with a hot alien babe. And in the end, is that not what man has dreamt of since first he looked up at the stars? Kif, I'm asking you a question."

Re:Whatever became of frcr.com?
But is there such a resource for Futurama?
Personally, I use Can't Get Enough Futurama. Perhaps not as in-depth as SNPP, but a good resource. -
Nielsens?
I think a large part of Futurama's problems with Fox(and many of the other shows listed in the discussion above) are a failing in the manner in which the Nielsen ratings are done. How many people on slashdot even KNOW a person who is a nielsen 'household', let alone are a nielsen voter?

then explode into entertainment. To be big it must be

Offline Writing Letter Campaign / Saving the Show
Didn't notice this in anybody's posts.
Received a reply to an inquiry to Marc (Owner of the On-Line Petition) referring me to the site for the Off-Line Letter Writing Campaign here.
[From the site:
Let's face it, this is going to be hard battle and we doubt that online petitions will help much, but we do not want to exclude these options: There is a petition by CGEF going at petitiononline . Click this link to open a new window and sign away. I will wait here till you are done. (Please stop mailing me about the spelling mistakes, I asked petitiononline to correct a few. Bear with me, I'm German ;))
2. This wasn't too hard. But now comes the most important part. You need to write letters. Go buy 6 letters and stamps at the local mall/post office, we have some mailing to do during the next few days. International public, too! Airmail is only a like 1 or 2 euros or equivalent. A letter is worth about 1000 petition entries. Some stuff to include: Hugely popular overseas, potent quality public, never having a chance to grow due to severe time slot sabotage. Have a look at the petition text for hints on what to write and add anything YOU can think of. It's your letter. No excuses for not getting a pen right now! ]
Check if out if you guys are serious about saving the show. -
Re:Decoding the Alien Alphabets
You could try the revamped Cant Get Enough Futurama site at http://www.gotfuturama.com. They have pretty much the entire old CGEF site back on-line now, including the Alien Language codecs - it's in the "Interactive" menu section.
