Re:Let me guess...
I doubt that very much.
Remote Neural Monitoring
Remote Neural Monitoring is a form of functional neuroimaging, claimed[1] to have been developed by the National Security Agency(NSA), that is capable of extracting EEG data from the human brain at a distance with no contacts or electrodes required. It is further claimed that the NSA has the capablility to decode this data to extract subvocalizations, visual and auditory data.
We're gonna need better tin-foil hats people.

Re:Duh!
Fat drunk people are funny.
Look at classical depictions of Bacchus...never skinny.*Ahem* I hate to be nit-picky,
... well, actually that's a complete lie, I live for being picky. But Bakkhos is not noticeably fat in classical depictions (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).I'm guessing you're thinking of Silenos
... except that, usually, he's also not distinctively fat (1, 2, 3), except when painted by Rubens -- a painter of the modern period. And I defy anyone to regard the Silenos in that painting as jolly -- he's revolting! We're not talking goatse revolting, not quite, ... though I can imagine him pulling a goatse after a couple more goblets of wine.Oaooow. Now my brain needs washing to get rid of that mental image.

If the Rocket Designer starts to run, you run..
Quite a few years back I heard some funny and interesting stories about a guy, I think it might have been this David Adair guy in the link below. Anyway, David was a child prodigy and amateur rocket enthusiast and at the age of 11 he was launching larger and larger rockets. He built a rocket that went from the East Coast to Area 51.
If the story is to be believed and this part is nothing that outrageous so why not, The first time he launched a large rocket it set off warnings, people thought some enemy power was shooting at us. Well after that he was asked to notify people so that they knew and they could verify the airspace was clear of airplanes.
It is interesting that in a simpler time, they would not have prevented him from launching and of course it did not hurt to have neighbors that were in the military and government vouching for you either. At least that is the story.
The people that would gather to watch him launch, knew that if he took off running that they should probably be running too.
Not sure if this story is the same one or not, there is so much disinformation around military and experimental aircraft. But figured most would find it entertaining regardless.
At least this one is relatively similar to the story I heard.
I really like this excerpt about no visible light source:
I will not even go into about whether UFOs are terrestrial or extra terrestrial. As with Religion, Politics and a few other subjects, everyone believes whatever they believe and if someone else challenges those beliefs, rather than having an interesting conversation (my typical and preferred reaction) people tend to get upset. So no point in anyone going there, that was NOT my intent with this post..
Why can we not agree to disagree when necessary and let it stop there.

Re:Separation of Science and States
(I'm the AC that also responded to you). After doing some research into their claims, I came across this: impossible dinosaurs. Their claim is as follows:
"Most conventional theories assume that gravity throughout the universe has always been and will always be a constant property of matter.
... The Electric Universe offers a different point of view. Gravity is not a constant. It's a variable that depends on the plasma environment. So Earth in the Mesozoic Era may have had less gravity than it has today. Holden calculates that in order for the largest dinosaurs to function, gravity must have been at least 1/3 (and possibly as low as 1/4) what it is today."It took a fair amount of effort to dig up the relevant papers regarding changes in the gravitational constant. (Short answer for the mathematically challenged: it hasn't changed). I'd also point out that if gravity was 1/3 to 1/4 of what it was today, the moon wouldn't have remained in orbit.
The original slashdot article had a post detailing what their predictions were. They were wrong.
Let's just call bad science when we see it. Plasma cosmology predicts few things. When it has tried to, it failed. Much like the yeti, flat earth, luminous aether and timecube, it probably won't go away any time soon. But it really should.

Re:Next stop.
And what will be the Unix time at December 21st, 2012 11:11 UTC?

Use Emacs as the starting point
No seriously. Fire up the usenet reader in Emacs and look at the scoring system. Very simple just +/- on users and threads but over time it becomes very powerful at filtering out the crap. Something like that with Bayesian maths around it would be great.
And of course you could display the dates in Mayan, with a bit of modding, which is useful given that this is what apparently tells us the end of the world

No need for that

Pretty Vacant
The Interior Dept's servers were ordered disconnected from the Internet after several years in which the Department's computers were repeatedly broken into, the Department never even seriously attempted to secure those servers, lots of important data was compromised, especially data in the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Interior Department was exposing Indian Affairs to huge risks, because Indian Affairs is an extremely low priority for the US government, as it always has been.
And now this judge has admitted that he's not qualified to judge security, so therefore he's qualified to order insecure servers back onto the Internet. Because obviously the Bush administration doesn't care about Indians. Especially not since Jack Abramoff, who based much of his corrupt Republican lobbying empire on ripping off Indian tribes, is rotting in jail instead of keeping that Republican machine working.
This judge should have to learn about IT security by having all his personal and professional data stored on these Interior Department servers. -
No More Malignant Cancers by the 7th Creative Day
I like that you said => "what we stumble on next" and thank you for it, as well your finishing comment how Laws of Physics could vary ahem. Another SlashDot article not many weeks ago -one that seems to get repeated every so often anyway- was telling us how the Universe is expanding and one day we will not see any stars in Earth's Sky. So now this parent article informs us the Universe has all these gigantia empty spaces. And yet, how many of the geniuses on SlashDot ~the same geniuses who keep modding me down and putting "Karma Bad" on my profile to warn people away from me?~ how many of them are genius enough to connect the dots between the two articles =>
=> The Bible's Creation account has not been signed off on yet. In the Bible, after each Creative Day it always ends with "And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, a 123456# day". That gives us more dots to connect, Mr. Lucas. Our weeks have 7 days so it looks like the first Bible "Creative Week" is missing a final => "And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, a 7th day". Time to collate these dots => Creation hasn't finished yet. The Universe is expanding to fill up all these giant holes in the Outer Space of our Universe. We are watching the completing of Creation, not as the scientists seek to fill us with heart-wrenching FEAR so we keep paying them 10% out of the Gross National Product.
Connecting the dots is my gift. I believe it is a God-given gift, and because I search the Scriptures for answers God has helped me find the answers for stopping the growth of malignant cancers in the human body. I invite you and all ./dotters to visit my website, specifically in the right sidebar, and you will find out that God is very much alive to have saved me from a vicious cancer that hit my right chest like a cannonball of death, without the aid of any medical doctors and their poison chemo treatments just last year: http://www.newpath4.com/. You or another reader might want to know what this means. It means the dots that were written for us in the book of Genesis aren't finished connecting yet. There are other dots scattered all through the Bible, written by men who never met as they were separated by 1500 years. They wrote prophecies in Ezekiel, Isaiah, the Psalms. Jesus came and added some more, specifically Matthew Chapter 24 and Luke Ch. 21. The dots are now up to the book of Revelation and they are still connecting.
Not only are the Bible "dots" connecting in internal linear agreement they have even connected outward to a non-biblical source, the Mayan calendar projection that we are already in 'era 2012', meaning it could happen any time and not be having to wait til Dec. 21 2012 at all, or could go past also. Many people are mistakenly wanting a specific Date, which of course tends to strike great fear in the populations, but this excerpt on that link => "According to John Major Jenkins, it will take 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator. The Galactic Alignment "zone" is 1998 +/- 18 years = 1980 to 2016. This is 'era 2012'." While I am no authority on the Mayan calendar this fellow John Major Jenkins seems to be right knowledgeable. In addition we also have a widespread belief of most Native American Indian tribes that someone like a white buffalo will arise and lead people to the God-Creator to know him better. The Bible does not give a specific date (although it appears overdue), the Mayans -
Re:why moslem
those guys in oklahoma city, sure looked moslem,
While I realize you are trying to make a point, your ignorance keeps you from doing so. Ever hear of John Doe #2 at OKC? The guy they never caught? Funny how he looks like Jose Padilla . Even if he isn't Padilla, he was described as middle eastern looking by multiple witnesses even if Jose himself wasn't middle eastern.
not to mention the ira,
The guys that used to call in their bomb threats so they wouldn't kill any innocents? lol.
As for why they mention the MOOSLAMS in the article, here is a hint...they found the threat on a jihadist website which called for an attack 'until the infidel new year,'. That doesn't sound too much like white supremacist talk to me!
But hey, why not illogically cry racism at evey chance right? It's the most intellectually lazy way to say you 'hate' someone without actually saying it. Don't worry if 'Moslem' isn't really a race, most of the idiots will believe you anyway. -

Re:Who needs one...
Actually, the duck and cover method usually gets you squished. Best bet is to hide near an object rather then under it, so you can be in the void created when objects fall on it, without you underneath.

Re:And They Are Us
To those never entering the shitlist, what made a difference was the constant pounding of head against the beaurocratic [sic] brickwall, the humiliation of "sorry, you're not allowed to enter that flight", "you're not authorized by proper authorities", always have to submit to some greater authority. Always hearing "you have nothing to fear if you have done nothing wrong". To most, that's something they could live with. And what it would take to change it had very little to do with leadership, it had to do with people getting off their asses.
Yours is one of the most informative comments I've read on Slashdot.
To anyone who doubts just how much we've become like the totalitarian societies we once despised, just compare what Dovregubbens Hall (583591) writes to your last visit to an airport or a Federal building.
We've learned to fear the screener for the Transportation Security agency, because if he doesn't like your attitude, he can keep you off your flight -- or from flying ever again. A year ago that screener was a janitor or a Microsoft Certification dropout. Today he can seriously disrupt your life if he wants to -- and for the first time in his life, he know he holds that kind of power.
We've got the government "training" long-haul truck drivers -- guys who routinely drive twelve or eighteen hours straight to meet deadlines --, and bus drivers, and rest stop workers to identify "suspicious" people and report them to a secret toll-free phone number. To think that this volunteer force can't be used to suppress dissent -- "Just keep a count of pro-choice bumper stickers" --is to be willfully blind to a century or more of police misconduct.
Even guys with cameras aren't safe from being scrutinized and added to government databases, because cops today wave the bloody shirt of 9-11 and invoke "patriotism" as a fig-leaf to justify anything they care do to -- reasonable or not, legal or not.
Protesters, exercising their First Amendment rights, are already being arrested solely because of the content of their speech. Whether they are eventually convicted or just harassed by cops and city inspectors, the message is clear: dissent will cost you at least a day in jail, enough money to hire a lawyer (or rely on a possibly incompetent court-appointed lawyer), and maybe a little roughing up by the cops.
Every war attracts a few war profiteers along with the honest, self-sacrificing patriots. Every increase in police powers gives police new tools to fight crime, but at the same time gives that minority of cops who are bullies, busybodies, and braggarts interested in throwing their weight around more occasion to lord that power over the innocent citizens.
The thing to fear is not another 9-11. It's not even Stalinist knocks on the door at midnight. What we need to fear is more subtle: a steady erosion of American liberties, of what it means to be an American.
I always believed that, as an American, I had a right to protest my government. It said so right in the Constitution. But now I'm reluctant not only to protest, but to even view protests, giving that several nurses at a conference in Washington D.C. were arrested along with protesters, just for being nearby.
I always believed that, as a citizen in a democracy, the police were not to be feared -- and weren't any "better" than me. Now we have the Hiibel decisi -

Re:how many hack books do i need to buy?
But you can't use the code snippets directly from a paper book.
Uh-huh. You either run them through a meatware interface between the tree and the cpu, or you can try your trusty scanner + ocr...And dead trees can't be grepped.
Not true; two different granular greps are available "Table of Contents" and "Index."Dead trees can do one thing that digital formats cannot: run on any meatware interface, without power requirements. Also, dead tree formats remain viable long after the compiler is abandoned. Take for example, the story of Gilgamesh, which was compiled into an executable approximately 4,000 years ago. I challenge you to successfully run any code compiled only forty years ago (1%!).

Re:Compiled with gcc-3.1
Weird. There was a lot of talk about it when I did a Google search. Why 11:11, why not 12:12, 13:13, 14:14? Some of the stuff found on the internet is clearly bullshit, but so many people are seeing this that it really feels weird. BTW, did you know that FreeBSD 5.0 will be released in 11.11 (eleventh day of november) this year?!

Sad.
The original "crop circles" were later admitted to be a hoax. However, when I tried to run a search for that information to show it here, I couldn't find it among the deluge of sites like this one which claims that "most serious researchers" believe that they are from "supernatural intelligence" and give quasi-religious defense for that... Where is the Amazing Randi when I need him?
