Re:/. Rendering
Or you could just install the SlashFix extension and not have to worry about it.
Ironic that a site visited by some of the biggest advocates of open source and the Mozilla Foundation wouldn't be rendered properly. "But it's fixed in the nightly builds!" Yeah, and it's been broken since around 0.7... -
Re:Fixes
You can work around the firefox bug (it's not slashdot's fault) with an extension: http://hardgrok.org/blog/item/slashfix-firefox-ex
t ension.html -
Re:And... the big news
Get the firefox slashfix plugin here: http://www.hardgrok.org/blog/item/slashfix-firefo
x -extension.html -
Re:Firefox plugin?
Ironically enough, yes.
-
Re:Like, render Slashdot the same way every time?
Oops. That should be "installing a simple extension".
-
Re:Like, render Slashdot the same way every time? While that is good to know, and I am really not trying to be a PITA about this, why not just use IE?
Because installing a or even reflowing every page is much less cumbersome than using a browser that doesn't support gestures or tabs.
-
Re:Like, render Slashdot the same way every time?
Yes, you're the only one.
:) In fact, one programmer decided to do something about it: Slashfix. Been using it for a while now and it works just great. -
get SlashFix
Maybe Slashdot should just put it on the front page.
http://hardgrok.org/blog/item/slashfix-firefox-ext ension.html
This is a firefox extension that fixes the strange rendering that Slashdot's broken html creates. -
Re:Like, render Slashdot the same way every time?
Or keep your stable release and install SlashFix.

Re:/. and firefoxWhy is
/. not workin well with firefox on windoze? I have to reload it everytime I look at it. Co-workers have reported the same.Search Google for the "SlashFix" extension for Firefox or download it here. It worked for me, no more reloading!

Re:Slashdot formatting not right?
The Slashfix extension fixes this. I got this from Mozilla Update, but it seems to have been removed from their site. For whatever reason it was, it works perfectly.
-
Re:Does it fix the shyte rendering of slasdot?
I just use SlashFix
-
Re:Does it fix the shyte rendering of slasdot?
Use Slashfix, and never worry about slashdot rendering errors again.
-
You need this extension
-
Correction
Sorry; slashfix link was wrong. Try the Slashfix extension WWW site.

Re:/. rendering
slashfix
there is also a reference to the bug number and a (workarround)fix. Seems to be a timing bug. -
Re:On this subject
Or you could use SlashFix. I am using it on 1.0.1 and it is working as good as ever.
The main Slashdot rendering bug fix is going to be released with 1.1. This version 1.0.1 is only a security fix. -
Re:/. rendering
If not, get this in the meantime:.
-
Re:/. rendering
Oops. On further exploration, I see that it's fixed in the trunk, and the fix will be included in the 1.1 release (I guess must have misread that to say 1.0.1). In the meantime, there's always the SlashFix extension.

I don't use it myself, but they say it works.) -

Slashdot Fix Firefox Extension
Click here to install the SlashFix Extension.
It'll bug you about it not being a trusted site though. -
Re:What could firefox hacks possibly cover?
Reloading the page can be tedious with questionable results.
Download this and you'll see that Slashdot behaves as it should behave in any web browser. -
Re:support calls
I have been using the SlashFix extension and since installing, I have not had that issue anymore. hurray!
:) -
Re:Maybe 'cause they can't read SlashdotThis is not meant to defend Firefox or Slashdot, but to lessen your frustration:
Get the Slashfix extension.

Open source community to the rescue
Ah, but a community is more than any one organization. Thus, while Slashdot itself may be unwilling to address this problem, other members of the community may already have solved it for you. Try the SlashFix extension for Firefox.
-
Re:Wow.
Install the slashfix extension.
-
Re:But...
This might be band-aiding the situation, but I haven't had to deal with the
/. rendering probs since I downloaded the Slashfix extension. -
Re:Work off of the View in IE source.
Do you mean this extension?
ieview
That extension adds a right-click option for viewing a page in IE.
Probably they'd want to look at that extension, along with something like the slashfix extension. Slashfix has code that causes Firefox to do something when it encounters a certain URL (slashdot.org)...You'd want something like the code in that to check against your list, then use code in ieview to pop open an IE window when one of those pages are detected.
Or something like that. -
Slashfix
Slashfix is the answer to your woes.

Re:Only 79 /.ers in six weeks. What does that say?
you dont need a 1.1 nightly. just get this extenstion http://hardgrok.org/blog/item/slashfix-firefox-ex
t ension.html and you can use 1.0 with /. -

this firefox extention fixes it: Slashfix
It was annoying the heck out of me too...

Re:Don't use refresh...
Or better yet, just use an extension that forces a relayout when slashdot loads:

Re:ActiveX?
Ironically, one of the site I find doesn't render correctly with FireFox is Slashdot!
This has been debated to death in here, but to avoid this problem you have three options:- Resize the font by holding CTRL and pressing + followed by - or turning the mouse wheel up and down
- Use the SlashFix extension, which does the same thing automatically
- Use a nightly build (the fix should be included in the 1.1 release)

Re:What's the critical marketshare threshold...
After a short discussion here I leanred that it doesn't work with pages loaded in new tabs in the background. Since I rarely want to see just one story at slashdot, it's pretty much useless to me. So, control-plus-minus it remains.
-
Re:What's the critical marketshare threshold...
http://www.hardgrok.org/slashfix/
Installed it, now I never have a problem on /.
If you don't want to install it, you can just do ctrl-,ctrl+ which shrinks and grows the font, which resizes the screen and fixes the display errors, too, but it's much easier to let slashfix do it for you. -
Re:What's the critical marketshare threshold...
-
Re:Basic Human Nature
The quick workaround is to hit ctrl- followed by ctrl+.
Or, you could install the slashfix extension:
http://www.hardgrok.org/blog/item/slashfix-firefox -extension.html
Isn't open source great?! -
Re:Basic Human Nature
SlashFix
This extension forces a re-flow of the page after it loads. -
Re:I'm glad this is happening.
They have fixed it: they eliminated the damned thing from the trunk build back in June. As for why this fix never got integrated into the branch build in time for the 1.0 release... who knows. Stupidity, I guess.
In the meantime, there's this extension which takes care of the problem pretty well. -
Re:Great! Maybe then..Get the SlashFix extension and no more worries. Or you can just quickly resize up and down (CTRL++, CTRL+-) to make it look right.
This problem will be fixed in Firefox 1.1, but that won't be released until March. You can try a nightly build before then.

Re:Firefox
For the lazy, get this extention to fic the slashdot bug:-
2 nitpicks...
1.) If I were lazy, I would not install an extension to fix a stupid bug. Nor would I hit Ctrl + and Ctrl -
2.) Are you so lazy as not to link the URL?
