It is like arguing that an oily beach is a natural phenomenon. It is possible that an oil reserve is exposed to the sea through natural causes (like an undersea earthquake opening a rift), but the hulking remains of the Exxon Valdeze would, for example, make the argument that the cause could have been natural pretty weak, even without 100% irrefutable proof.

Personally, I'd rather see some rational discussion happen over this. I want to see all the side-effects of atmospheric CO2 found. I want to see good reconciliation with satellite data. Most importantly, I want scientists, and not politicians, to draft specific reccomendations after the research has become sufficient.

Yes, there is room for improvement, but give me a break, they are fighting a loosing battle just to get funding to safely deorbit spacecraft. And as for the simplicity of some of the displays at the centers, well I'm sorry that they don't have astrophysicits manning all the exhibits, they're off doing important science and engineering. If you really want to be a space enthusiast, support full funding so they have the money to do even more public outreach.

Good point RE incremental costs vs incremental value. However, although a touch off-topic, while thinking about marginal increases in your value, what about typing proficiency?

A constant source of irritation in the IT workplace is seeing all this scorching hardware, and highly (note - not over-) paid professionals hunting and pecking at approximately 15wpm.

Sure, not all tasks are typing rate intensive. However, for whatever reason I ended up at over 80wpm, and there's little to beat the feeling when you're deep in the groove at the command prompt, firing in a sequence of commands as fast as you think them, punctuating each command with a decisive punch on the return key as per Bishop in Aliens.

And then you look across at your colleage, hunting around on the keyboard, typing in the same commands with an error in the first dozen characters.

So - good point RE processor upgrade, and I'm all in favour of more coal on the fire, but think about the increase in your value to your employer by bumping up your WPM. In any event, there's a great personal return to you by being able to painlessly touch-type.

During the presentation CEO W.J. Sanders III presented a few interesting slides which compare the die sizes of the Athlon and P4 at both the 18 and 13 micron process, plus their new processor roadmap and projected performance of the clawhammer vs. P4 (guess which one wins?). I've mirrored them here so you don't have to watch the whole hour long presentation. If your into AMD though it is actually an watch.

Sanders jokes about hating the blue men (who doesn't?) notes that if you had bought intel stock 2 years ago you'd have 0 earnings, but if you'd bought AMD you'd have made over %200. And on the topic of this disucssion, he extols the Atholn's much smaller die size (the P4 is 1.8x bigger than the Athlon) AMD can get much higher yeilds, and therefore sell at a much lower price.

first off a genetic algorithm and a neural net are totally different things.

second, not it's wouldn't be easy. at least no to get good results. in a genetic algorithm your building virtual DNA. a set of something that is "fit" for something.

while the fitness could be how much you won or lost buy. i can't think of a way to convert a set of data into how to play chess.

When Fort St. Vrain was built, I don't think it was called a GTHMR... just HTGR for High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor. Same thing for Peach Bottom 1. Neither of these plants used a direct-cycle gas turbine for energy conversion; there was a steam generator with core-coolant helium on one side, and water/steam on the other to drive a normal steam turbine. They had terrible seal-leakage problems at St. Vrain with their main helium circulators; monatomic helium is incredibly tiny, and very difficult to keep from leaking everywhere. The core internals design for these older HTGRs and the PBMR featured in the article is very different also. The HTGR fuel used similar fuel-spheres, but they were packed into large, hexagonal graphite blocks with integral coolant channels. The blocks interlocked to form the core. Nice idea, but I imagine refueling was a bitch. The fuel cycle for these plants was supposed to be that of a thermal breeder, with a uranium-thorium fuel cycle. The breeding ratio was not terribly high, but I believe it was shown to be greater than unity (i.e., more fissile uranium created than consumed). I don't know too much about the history of Peach Bottom 1, but there is a lot of good information about Fort St. Vrain at the following location: Fort St. Vrain History.

I have to concur. I know a little about networking, but mostly my experience is in high-performance computing. In parallel programming, avoiding unnecessary communication is a way of life. Once I looked at the P2P query problem, I hit upon an interesting approach to remove the broadcast requirement by using an approximate query routing scheme. This has the potential to fix P2P network scaling problems at a fundamental level. So I wrote up a paper outlining the approach. I politely sent off email to the Clip2, OpenP2P, etc. briefly explaining the idea, directing them to the paper, and asking for comments. I've got nothing. Now, maybe it is not much of an idea. I am an outsider in that community, but I really wonder if anyone bothered to read it.

In particular, everyone seems so focused on the "super-peer" concept with Reflector that they ignore underlying scaling problem that will still be there with super-peers. As a network becomes larger, it will not be able to tolerate broadcast queries...even with super-peers. Here is a nice explanation why.
