Rosie- one such site is Honest Reporting. The BBC is featured on this site frequently, though they're not the worst culprit. Look at the reason the site was started to see that this type of 'reporting' has been going on for quite a while.

It's been shown that many of the photos supposedly of dead and injured "Palestinians" are from Syria, and one was actually from Israel. See Honest Reporting to verify for yourself. The Palestinian press (aka Pallywood) has also been caught staging pictures of fake bombing victims, and claiming that Hamas rockets that landed in Gaza (misfire?) were launched by Israel. The amount of lies and misinformation is staggering.

No, I wouldn't say that's true. Certainly there exist publications with a whole range of different slants on the Palestinian question, but that's a very different thing from being anti-Semitic. And there's always over- and under-emphasis of topics—and plenty of inaccuracy in general—but I don't think a charge of anti-Semitism is justified.

I never mentioned anything about Palestinians. Certain British media repeatedly misrepresent facts, ignore facts, and sometimes just make stuff up relating to Israel, always to its detriment, and refuse to make corrections when confronted with accurate details. Review the website posted above, it's full of details. If it were just sloppy or lazy reporting, one would think the errors would swing both ways. But they don't. I stand by the earlier claim. I'm not making a blanket condemnation, just saying that there is a notable and undeniable theme there.

I stopped even trying when I was editing the Hezbollah article for a little less bias and a little more clarity and then getting all my edits erased due to Wikipedia being run by editors of the Zionist persuasion

For the record, Hezbollah is a terrorist organization founded as the Iranian revolutionary movement's Lebanese branch with the goal of overthrowing that state's republic, exterminating all political opposition, expanding the reach of absolute Shari'a law, and waging proxy wars for Iran's benefit. That's as clear and unbiased as any reference to Hezbollah needs to be.

You know, I pretty much agreed that paid newspapers did better investigative journalism until that whole ACORN scandal broke. That was just some guy who set up his own investigation and made a video to prove it. It was some of the best investigative reporting I've seen in a while.......compare it to mainstream media, which investigated such hard hitting stories as, "was Obama really born in the US?" and "Why was Mark Sanford not in his office?" or "Was Joe Wilson's apology enough?"

Another good example of investigative journalism is Michael Totten, a blogger who actually went to Iraq (he literally drove across the border with no prior plans. That takes guts. Later he went in again with the US army). He has gone all across the middle east, talking to average people on the street, and seeing what they have to say. It is some of the best reporting of the Iraq war I've seen, and he is directly supported by his readers.

Compare that to some of the fun stuff the mainstream media does. It seems every few years the New York Times has to fire someone because they've been caught reporting unethically.

That said, there is some news content I am willing to pay for, the clearest example is the Wall Street Journal. They do a good job, but with Rupert Murdoch in charge now, it may not last much longer and is already going downhill.

I love the Daily Show, but juxtaposing clips of persons saying completely different things isn't news because in the real world, situations change and it's often useful to behave inconsistently (cue Emerson's "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" quote). Further, the Daily Show's juxtapositions are not always valid -- I've seen quite a few old quotes taken out of context, but that's okay because it's not real news.

Also, I'd rather get my news without editorializing from the reporter or anchor (but of course a news channel could editorialize in opinion and interview shows).

Because it's hard to ask good questions in a crowded press conference (people who deal with journalists have gotten really good at deflecting questions). And when they get better access, often the price they pay for that is a positive tilt on their stories. e.g., Time's man-of-the-year piece on Vladimir Putin or what CNN did in Iraq pre-1991. One programme that's historically had a bit more spine is the BBC's "HardTalk", but I don't think it airs on BBC America.

Btw, I think the FTA is spot-on when it talks about how network news considers content secondary to the size of audience -- this is what IMO led to the dumbing down of news to appeal to the largest possible set.

I think the only way TV news will improve is when TV execs realize that appealing to the lowest common denominator will just turn smarter viewers off, and those smarter (and affluent!) viewers are the ones their advertisers really want.

I don't live in the US, but even I can see that most news stations are firmly pro Bush. How else do you explain the free passes and non-quetsions that get askled of him.

It is interesting to note that the website that is given to highlight the anti-israeli bias (http://www.honestreporting.com/) in the BBCs coverage is affiliated to http://www.israelpetition.com/, which has the following quote at the top of their webpage

While individual programmes broadcasted by the BBC may contain some bias, I think it is fair to assume that honestreporting.com has an even larger bias, given its affiliations!

However, all is not well with the news content. The BBC is famous for switching to "propaganda mode" whenever British interests are involved, as good as they are with things that are far away. Also, there are been repeated charges of a systematic anti-Israeli bias in their coverage.

They do great work, but for all the gushing, do remember they have their share of problems.

The BBC itself is very biast. It's very dangerous to have a media monolith in a democracy no mater how that monolith is funded although an effectively tax funded monolith doesn't require much effort to maintain its dominance.

The situation is made worse because the BBC is the 'British' Broadcasting Corporation. Because it's 'British' the British public place a naive trust in its journalism, I know this because although perhaps anecdotal, I see it everyday. The BBC can quite happily skew stories in favour of their agenda and play on the lack of informity of the British public> As I said this is very dangerous in a democracy. The lack of informity of the British consumer is a factor but so is the continuation of an almost state funded broadcasting corporation.

It would be better if the licence fee were given to truely independent organisations and a limit were placed on the amount of advertising allowed on British television to maintain a level playing field. It's interesting to note the results and see why it's difficult to trust ANY news coming from Iraq.

How are we expected to know what's really going on when reporters feel threatened and ordinary Iraqis still don't trust the media after years of it being state controlled?

There are other documented examples or Arab gangs intimidating the press to sing their own tune and it pretty well rights off any ability for readers to discern between news versus propaganda.

Also, since media bias is in general in favour of those who claim to speak and act on behalf of the Palestinians, it's difficult to understand why media activism would be required (see another perspective)
