I write my own homepage
I write my own homepage. it has links to here, tom's, my ftp, my web site, my free spam collector, comics, and satire. I realized i didn't want to connect to the internet everytime i want to open up mozilla. so i wrote myself some html, and now my homepage is fast and i can go the places I need to in one link. I'm thinking of adding some weather and some news...

Think "outside the box" (sorry, horrible pun) of just kernel compiles, and I suspect you'll understand the potential value here.
Let's say you run a decent-sized development house, employing a healthy number of coders. Now, as these folks churn through their days (nights?), they're gonna be ripping through a lot of compiles (if they're using C/C++/whatever). From my personal experience as a developer in the industry, a large portion of a developer's time is spent just compiling code.
If you can implement cost-effective tech like this to reduce time spent on routine tasks like code burns, you increase productivity.
Holy shit, I may have actually come up with a halfway decent justification for "hippie tech" to throw at the suit-wearing types...

What's spam?For the vast majority of law-abiding Americans, spam is a non-issue. Almost everybody I fraternise with uses MicroSoft's HoTMaiL.NET service.
During recent renovations to the worlds first and best web-mail system, MicroSoft were kind and talented enough to add a heuristics-based artificial intelligence spam-blocking feature. At first I was sceptical - I mean, I use a sophisticated L.I.N.U.X. system to try and reduce spam, and still I receive around 10-20 spam messages every day. Imagine my suprise the day I peered over a colleague's shoulder to see the work of art that is the new HoTMaiL.NET User Interface. Not only was it exceptionally aesthetically pleasing, but it had a helpful 'Junk-Mail' mailbox to keep precisely that - Junk Mail!!! I proceeded to enquire about this fantastic, energy saving innovation. My co-worker simply could not contain her delight with the system. She confided that since the HoTMaiL revamp, she had received a total of zero unwanted messages, including ones from a mentally unstable transient who had been stalking her for weeks!!
I'm sorry if I rant, or come off as an 'astro-turfer' (whatever that means), but I prefer to think of myself as an evangelist. Simply put, HoTMaiL.NET is the finest e-mail system currently in use, and I would have no problems whatsoever in recommending it to anybody who would rather receive less unwanted mail. I'm sure that when the Netherlands receives access to the civilised Internet, the judge's decision will be overturned as their population migrates to a powerful, easy-to-use system such as MicroSoft's spam filter.

You're tired of all the crap? Then don't use Apple products.
Everyone knows that Apple subscribes to "Price Gougers Anonymous"...if you price-spec out system setups (like a G4, or a Powerbook, or any other system they produce), you quickly come to realize that Apple usually sticks on a nice 30% price increase to everything they produce.
And for the love of God - don't even THINK about going through CompUSA - you'll spend another 10%-25% on top of that.
Come on man, don't start bitching about how you're sick of "expensive Apple hardware/software". It's expensive for a reason - because Apple wants it to be.

I used to get 5 a day, then I started tracing and sending off an abuse report abut EVRY SINGLE one. I now get about 3/week, not counting my bait address. don't email me there, btw, I have a bot that gose tgo hotmail, downloads them, then traces them, and forwards them to abuse departments.

This is a very good point, most of us don't opt-out for this reason. If there was a system in place that required "approved senders" to have thier lists filtered by a universal opt-out list, great. I would also want a toll free phone number and bussiness adderss included with each address. This way, if someone abuses thier approved sender status, people can whine and sue.

Secondly, take a look at Netcraft's longest uptimes. I counted 6 out of 50 that weren't FreeBSD.. The 6 Non-BSD machines run IRIX, btw.
Marketshare-wise, between Yahoo's 4000 FreeBSD boxes, and all of Hotmail's FreeBSD mail servers, I think it's doing quite well..
There may be more local ISP's with their 5 machines running linux than there are running FreeBSD, but so what?

a) - You are right - IE still crashes my systems (in windows, of course...), but mozilla, when it crashes, leaves windows alone just fine...and it's laughable to watch me try and middle-click to open a new page in IE. I still curse that little move-thingy. arg. Mozilla is awesome for win, and in linux it's pretty good too.
b) - streaming audio - does it really matter? everyone I know who needs audio uses p2p. Internet radio is dying. what else is there? seriously, I just don't know, and i'm curious if there is anything.
c) - A friend of mine runs apache in win98. A lot of people use it. Wait until 2.0, or read this slashdot article if you don't believe me. I agree with the parent i'm replying to. MS hasn't done too much to impress me with their internet stuff. It's mostly bloated and insecure.

Shit is between your ears...arrogance? your post is DRIPPING with it. Remember, Microsoft does have more than one operating system. I have been using WINXP for the last 3 weeks, and it does a pretty damn good job of protecting the system from horribly written applications.
Linux has safety measures for the system against those "bad" programs. It is called GCC and it warns the programmer of bad code pretty damn fast at over 50,000 lines per second on an Athlon. Microsoft wrote a pretty bad application back in the late 1980's and it was called Microsoft Windows 1.0, built ontop of MS-DOS, Microsoft's "engineered" marvel, and from that bad, virus-susceptible code, spawned Windows 3.11 FWG, Windows NT 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT 4.x, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP(erimental). Congratulations on your latest $180+ purchase of yet another Microsoft operating that does that same as its ancestors...run virii verry well.
Happy hacking? An operating system, like ANY large application, needs to be engineered. Happy hacking ususally means 10x more bugs and possible security issues. Something VERY BAD in an operating system.

That was a quick answer, you didn't even examplify how such 1st class Microsoft software, ala Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook Express, have matured to the bug-filled, virus prone peices of work to date. Each version of MS Windows had an optimized version of these two Microsoft packages and each version demonstrated even more engineering marvels by the flaws in their software. It just proves to everyone, engineers make just as many mistakes as Happy Hackers, but it looks like Unix programs have the upper-hand in quality, stability, and visual candy.
When I said "Up and running", I was referring to the time it takes to get an application created (learning curve) on a Kde/Gnome as opposed to windows. Compare GTK+ widgets/c++ with visual basic. Most novice programmers would much rather use visual basic. (hence the 1000s of useless applications you see cluttering the internet, written in VB).
Kde and Gnome are desktop environments. Developing specifically for these desktop environments is just a simple code fork that is solved using a toolkit of the programmer's choosing. MS Windows programs are more error-prone and by developing strictly for an operating system or as we know, a desktop, you just hurt your potential userbase. Microsoft demonstrates that in a day-to-day basis. It is called "leverage", and they believe the more programs made specifically for MS Windows, the better for them. Honest point. Microsoft software and development environments, go beyond this idea of non-portable software. The enhance it by building their development environments and their programming language syntax off-standard with each sucessive release!

Yes, we must brag about our skills of utilizing the X protocol because our jobs require such knowledge. Network administrators and you name it require extensive knowledge of X protocol and securing it because many of our customers prefer to login to their office machines with a GUI instead of using just ssh and console commands. We know how are jobs depend on such knowledge and our "insecurity" revolves around money because, as you don't yet understand, it costs money to live in a house with a wife, three kids, a dog, a cage full of rabbits, chickens, and turkeys. Believe me kid, as you grow older, you must depend less on your parents. There is much more than Microsoft Windows and its large availability of games. People must EARN money to live. Our insecurity is shared by millions of people and their own professions. You dare imply we are a bunch of people that are addicted to computers, while someone else is addicted to cooking food, and a carpenter is addicted to building furniture from oak? It is shameful to even respond to your lies lest people see me as a fool to waste my time, but I set grounds for verbal strength that brings out the warrior of every man to fight another tribe's encroachment with their lazy, poor quality, most dispicable fruits of their labor.
As a closing note to you, I must say that unlike Microsoft, everyone is allowed to participate in much of Linux' development. It is a pool of knowledge, bigger than anything Microsoft can develop and contribute. Our pool of knowledge is constructed in our free-time and is higher quality than Microsoft's "engineering" skills. No government, financial status or political status can impede Linux's development and that shall stand for every freedom-phille. We stress the software we contribute to. We don't run another operating system on our free eMail websites(hotmail.com) and say otherwise on our "engineered" software's ability to operate under like-conditions. You are the hypocrite because you know nothing inside of Microsoft's software development ring and have nothing to say other than "it's up" or "it's down". Linux and its supporting software is to be used at everyone's advantage! Nobody alone owns Linux, it is a team effort! You lie too much on topics that other people understand more than you. You'll make a great leader other than providing excellent insight.

In my 4 accounts, my 2 hotmail accounts almost always get the same spam, and my other 2 get 1/month max. The hotmail spam all comes from the same guy i think, and despite reporting all of it (i use ricochet to auto-trace it) is still get spam almost every day. I also have a deticated spam account. attoparsecs@hotmail.com is rigged to automaticly trace the headers of incoming mail and send off reports of spam. Please use this address in usenet posts.

The only thing I'm really worried about right now is losing my e-mail account and having friends get their messages bounced before I can tell them my new address (whatever that may be). It's almost as bad as going through a change of area code with the phone company, only here, the grace period is a matter of days.

This is a VERY good question, and I don't think that there is a positive answer - sorry.
As a network engineer/designer , over the years I've used lots of different network drawing tools and their associated file formats :
- Pen and paper , fax and photocopies ! - open but non manipulable
- Textpad/Wordpad (don't laugh !) - open and manipulable
- MS Word organisation chart editor - closed and non manipulable by non MS s/w
- MS PowerPoint - closed and non manipulable by non MS s/w
- NetViz closed and non manipulable by non Netviz s/w
- Visio - closed and non manipulable by non MS Visio s/w
Visio is easily the best of these, with Visio 2000 really working for me.
I always had a fear of losing my Netviz pictures as Netviz was/ is a relatively small company that might go under one day.
With MS buying Visio a few year back, that fear is now gone. I imported all my Netviz pictures in Visio.

Finally, if you have the time, give them 2 routers and switch

Actually, I would install a few other OS's (linux, FreeBSD, BeOS, WinXP (just to see what its like)) but I can't figure out how to partition my raid array without losing all my data. Partition Magic only goes up to 80gigs and my array is basically a 143gig C drive. A shame really.... Hey, if anyone knows how to partition a 143gig drive without loosing all the data. Let me know.

One of Passport's greatest security weaknesses may be the single sign-on process,....Microsoft is addressing this by offering additional security features for partner Web sites, such as banks, asking for additional information or a four-digit PIN (personal identification number) as a second level of authentication.
Microsoft addressed this problem long time ago! People have been using MID(Message ID Number) for reading hotmail.

Poorer areas?
Just how will this change anything? There are already many free e-mail providers out there (e.g. Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, email.com,... etc.). If they're so concerned about bridging "the digital divide by making computers accessible to every Houstonian," wouldn't it be a better idea to get computers into these poor homes first, so they'll have a way to access the Internet without having to go to libraries, fire stations, or police stations every time they want to check their mail or do anything else? Houston could even provide the poorer areas with free (or discounted) Internet access, or they could use one of the few, but remaining Free Internet providers.

Problem is obviousIt's the obvious problem that comes up whenever the Internet is used. The very nature of the beast is that anonymity is virtually assured. I can go online and make a Hotmail account and claim to be Joe Blow who graduated from Harvard at the age of 16, and nobody can prove me otherwise (at least, not easily)
Whenever you have a medium that is so completely anonymous, you're going to have problems proving credibility. After all, IPs can be spoofed, so if I trace a Virus e-mail back to the alledged sender and it comes up at an address at McAffee, I'm likely to believe that the virus is true, when it was just spoofed.
What we need is some kind of identification verification procedure online. Not only would this destroy the virus scares, but it would also limit spam and help to track down child molestors. I'm all for tying real-life identities to online personas because it would mean accountability for actions, and if you've been in an IRC chat room recently, you know how stupid people can be when there are no repercussions for their actions.

AT&T's residential broadband division (MediaOne) has cut off port 80 across their network
Seeing as how HTTP runs on port 80, how are outgoing HTTP connections (i.e. web page pulls) supposed to proceed across the network? Given that frontends to mail, newsgroups, and file transfers are increasingly HTTP-based, they might as well just schedule total network downtime during Code Red attacks.

OpenS0urce S0lution; proposal, usual plot warningOf course this could be done for free and open to all operating systems. Linux servers all serving the checksums... at the bottom of the e-mail or as attachment there is checksum.
You click a button in [your favorite mail application, any platform] ; that in turns sends a simple text message, with the crc or checksum and if they match (either the client software, or the server, you choose) they show as matching, moved to a cleared folder, application dependant.
Applications can compete on how they use the results. One good idea could be to filter out non matching results, or to send them to a junk folder - or simply showing a certain icon.
The real key to the system is this: if spammers are creating a crc which is being used over and over to send to multiple clients via redirecters and other cleaver tricks, hit a button and simply vote it spam. Use a weighted system to eventually filter out the same message. But running the headers throught the checksum would stop most spammers since the TO: field would most likely change.
Simple text messaging that can be used by any programmer, and there are many non GPL, examples of how to compare two checksums.
Guessing the server would carry all the checksums, a good idea would be to add an revokation date which can be set client side either defaulted or user configurable.
Really the whole thing is simple. Just block people from mass e-mailing. Test the system for a while then add the spam blocking to see which crc's where voted spam, cross that with the volume of e-mails by that person. Although the system suddenly became huge, but off site computers could do the computing, not the servers.
E-mail is a huge thing. Linux sends e-mails to my wireless phone without any user interaction. The system better be ready for people who use e-mail like an instant message.
Now it comes to mind - if my pop server software (and maybe all isp's) would just check the crc against the server that would save everyone.
Even MS could get into the game with Hotmail and their own MS CRC server...

Good to see progress, but....
The first miniseries was really botched, i mean, they don't even delve into the religious importence of the spice, nor it's wei as a narcotic. The point of the worms interaction with them is mispresented and the weirding modules are completely ignored (this was amongst the things that made House Atreides as strong as it was).
The scenery is also poorly presented; there is no show of water conservation in the mini-series, even among the fremen. Frank Herbert was [practically, at min.] an Ecologist - and the mini-series gave absolutely no attention to this spirit.
There's more, but if you care enough by now there's plenty of sites with more info (or i'm preaching to the converted). The new series will get eaten up - just as the last one did - but that doesn't mean it will be any better. Harrison should do himself a favor and hire an (eclectic) Ecologist or at least a well-schooled historian of some religious venue. -

Because Microsoft is in monopolistic bed with the spammers, and you can't read hotspam if you're using a POP3 or IMAP MUA with good filters (which Outhouse Express lacks).
Because Microsoft products don't run on anything but i686 architecture machines, and if you don't already have an i686, prepare to fork over $1,000 for a new computer. (I'm not sure if Outhouse Express for the Mac supports the brand-new protocol.)
