Re:Unconstitutional
Well in that case, there have been plenty of shaming punishments here in the US, but the person can decide shaming or jail time.
This was the first one to pop up on google.

Re:Careful.
I'm always happy for research done to improve mobility and functioning for disabled people. Not enough is done to help those who are vision, mobility, or hearing impaired. That said... be really careful out there. There's way too many people who are scared by anyone who looks different. Steve Mann was recently attacked for having a digital eye prothetic by employees of a McDonald's. There didn't appear to be any motive for the assault other than a fear of his prothetics. His family was with him at the time.
I've heard similar reports of people being attacked who have brain implants to deliver electrical stimulation due to epilepsy, depression, etc. If it's visible, sooner or later some stupid neanderthal bastard's going to attack you for it. I personally think it should be a hate crime to attack a disabled (or 'augmented') person... but it's still more science fiction than science fact to our legislators to consider, I think.
Oh and Im sure he didnt do anything or say anything to provoke it. "Oh but officer they attacked me because my funny glasses. I certainly didnt do anything
/cries". I cant say I believe that was all one sided and he walked in and someone said "AHHHHH! Its the terminator here to kill us! Get it!".People often automatically take the victims side and say oh that poor man, even if they arent the victim but were the ones to paint themselves as such. I could go out and pick on someone till they hit me and lay down and cry and tell the police I was just being friendly to them and I did nothing wrong while they went to jail and I get a pat on the back.
You need to grow up and stop blindly siding with anything you read or hear.

The often cited buggy whip people went out of business as a result of innovation in products. Wal-mart hasn't produced any new products. That's my point. Wal-mart's success stems from innovations in labour management, negotiating with suppliers and contractors, leveraging off shore manufacturing and artificially depressed currencies.
They create innovations like this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/06/walmart-outsourcing-depresses-wages_n_1573885.html
Yes, it is innovative to find a way to lower your distribution center hourly wage from $8/hour to $5/hour but not something I would compare to the invention of the Model T.

Applying the discover in engineering & tech
Dr. Joe Incandela of UC Santa Barbara and CMS director said recently of the CERN Higgs results:
"This is so far out on a limb, **I have no idea where it will be applied**, We're talking about something **we have no idea** what the implications are and **may not be directly applied for centuries**."
(source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/04/stephen-hawking-and-higgs-boson-bet_n_1650024.html)
My questions: Do you agree that the direct application of the findings are as nebulous and abstract as he describes?
Please discuss the implications of your answer and how they relate to the economic choices of how humans use their scientific resources.

Re:Ah don't worry...
This from an anti-Muslim hate site. No supporting citations to their numbers, but they promise to "supply sources upon request". Instead of each item linking to some citation, they link to other pages on the anti-Muslim hate site that says the exact same thing as the item.
I decided to test your assessment. I took the first six news items they listed:
The List of Islamic Terror Attacks from 2012
2012.06.18 Pakistan Quetta 5 69 Five Shiite students are blown to bits by Taliban bombers.
2012.06.18 Afghanistan Tagab 6 13 At least six locals are exterminated when religious extremists detonate a bomb at a bazaar.
2012.06.17 Nigeria Trikania 5 40 A Shahid suicide car bomber crashes through a church gate and blows up at least five Christians.
2012.06.17 Iraq Fallujah 6 12 Two children are among six slain by Jihadi bombers.
2012.06.17 Nigeria Zaria 34 125 Holy Warriors walk into two church services and detonate, leaving over thirty worshipers dead in the carnage, including at least ten children.
2012.06.16 Pakistan Landi Kotal 26 65 Sharia advocates detonate a truck bomb amid a crowd at a market, sending over twenty-six souls to Allah. And this is what I found after a minute or less of Google news search for each - reasonable evidence for each of the six items listed.
Pakistan Bus Bombing Kills Students In Quetta
Blast in French-controlled Afghan town kills six
Islamists Bomb Three Churches in Kaduna State, Nigeria
Iraq bombings kill four, wound 32
At least 50 dead in three Nigeria church bombings, reprisal attacks
Around the WorldNow then, the links below are from a side bar labeled "News" on the front page. Apparently the sites you complain about as being hate sites include Reuters, the BBC, the CS Monitor, The Telegraph, the Emirates 24/7, and other lesser lights. In short, you are full of baloney - to be polite about it.
Massachusetts Man Pleads Guilty in Toy Plane Bomb Plot...
Kenyan Muslims Help Guard Churches Following Attacks...
British Muslims Accused of Plotting EDL Massacre...
Islamists Pool Forces to Kill African Christians...

Re:Citation needed
Blah Blah Blah Tax Cuts. Shit, there was pork in that legislation for everybody even the bottom two brackets 10 and 15% got something. Most of us got a 2% reduction in our rates. WHooopity shit.
For those who have a lot of money and those like CEOs who take their money in terms of stock options, they're paying a much lower capital gains tax. For a lot of us, that doesn't really take a bite out of my tax bill.I did look at the 2003 vote and it was a tight vote with Cheney breaking the tie in the Senate. That's how a democracy works. And since you bring up the ACA, and it is a piece of shit in terms of legislative triumph, it was passed and now affirmed by the Supreme Court. So, it's like the old adage: garbage in, garbage out. I don't think there was one congressman or senator that put in the work to write the legislation. It came, as usual, from lobbyists and was cobbled together by staff. The folks on the hill have a way of doing things and mostly, it's not their own work.
Oh and check your facts, the grand poobah of the democrats, nancy pelosi, proposed extending the tax cuts for people making up to $1,000,000. Strangely enough, It's about the most intelligent thing I've heard her say and it shows something that we haven't seen in a long time, compromise. Or maybe it's the fact that her personal finances would be negatively impacted or her husbands?
I hold both Republicans and Democrats with the same contempt. They're incompetent at doing what's best for the country and they put their own agendas before the public agenda. Frankly they are irresponsible when it comes to money matters and I doubt most of them could pass a simple economics 101 class. You can't keep spending more than you have. If you keep taking money in taxes, you dry up capital and that's what fuels job creation. No Money = No Jobs and the biggest employer in this country is the Federal Government. Your tax dollars going to paper pushers and bureaucrats and the pork keeps going on and on. I'm not advocating giving the rich people a break, far from it but you can't keep expecting to have a fair tax system when half of the people in this country don't pay federal income taxes. So, if you earn money and pay federal income tax, you may not be a 99% you're a 50%... Oh yeah, the 1% get most of the breaks too so as they say them that has the gold, makes the rules.
But this is Slashdot again, so I'm still amazed at why this has become a political discussion on which party will lead us of the cliff quicker. The way I see it, we're getting pushed along just fine so vote whoever you want into office, it won't make much difference. I do know however that I wouldn't trust anybody in congress to hold my wallet or my checkbook for that matter.

Re:Thank goodness!
countries could sign treaties then pass a law saying they're not going to abide by the treaty they just signed.
- they don't even have to pass a law like that, they can simply ignore the signature on that worthless document, because that document is not actually law of the land.
It actually happens all the time, countries sign treaties and break them, simple example of US breaking a number of treaties.

What's up with the article selection?
I know a hot topic gets multiple selections, so do Slashdot editors pick the one with the single worst article? This news items is covered in several reputable places, yet, they selected a submission that looks like it was written by an 8th grader. They use AP's Tweet to make it look like an official AP story/headline. There's brilliantly nonsensical lines like "Proview is continuing their lawsuit in Santa Clara for $1.5 billion dollars while allging fraud and unfair competition. The case was soon after thrown out by a judge."

Oh, c'mon !
This is entirely a right-wing issue, and the flames of racism are being fanned entirely by so-called "conservatives"
Oh, c'mon !!!
If blaming everything on the "Conservatives" can make America a better place, you'll have my full support
But it ain't gonna be that way
You insisted that there is no liberal ever support the illegals, in fact, you said:
I've literally never, in my entire life, heard any self-described "liberal" say this.
Well, isn't Obama a "Liberal" ?
What about Obama's Immigration Directive ?
"Obama Administration To Stop Deporting Younger Undocumented Immigrants And Grant Work Permits"
What are you going to say about that, buddy ??

Re:Poetic Justice
You must not be familiar with the recent expansion of the drug war to crack down on doctors who deal with prescription pain medication. Here's the start of a very nice series by Radley Balko at the Huffington Post:
"Law enforcement agencies send undercover agents and informants into doctors' offices to lure suspected physicians into writing bad prescriptions. Doctors have then been conditioned to be suspicious of patients, to see them as potential addicts or drug dealers... The high-profile prosecution of Virginia pain specialist William Hurwitz is a good example. Federal investigators found that of Hurwitz's hundreds of patients, 15 had resold the the drugs he prescribed to them. There was no evidence that Hurwitz was complicit in or knew about the sales. At worst, he was duped by a small percentage of his patients. But instead of working with Hurwitz to catch the dealers posing as patients, investigators cut bargains with the dealers to implicate Hurwitz. Hurwitz was eventually convicted on 15 counts of distributing narcotics. In 2007, U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema sentenced Hurwitz to 57 months in prison, far less than what prosecutors were asking. Brinkema acknowledged that Hurwitz was a well-intentioned doctor who had made some mistakes, not the drug pusher prosecutors portrayed him to be."

there are jobs to be had..plenty of them.
Except there aren't, that's the problem. There are four times as many unemployed people as there are jobs, so odds are you have to be in the top 25% of your field just to qualify for the lowest possible wage.
In fact, more often than not, you have to have a job already in order to get a job.

'I had to live everyday with the consequences of the loss of capacity to produce a rice crop in Haiti to feed those people because of what I did; nobody else.'" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/20/with-cheap-food-imports-h_n_507228.html

Considering that Larry Ellison is buying himself a frikking island, perhaps the slap in the face finally pushed him into super-villainy...

By whom? George "duh" Bush?
Let's be honest here, Bush couldn't put enough neurons together to do any of this.
That day, Chertoff was in charge of puppeteering.

It's actually 1 billion not 1 trillion (oops). Still my point stands: The politicians let guys him & other megacorps go slide w/o consequences, but instead go after us who owe just 0.0001% as much. Why? Because the rich & corporations buy immunity.
Corporations that paid zero taxes:

basically, no one does ANY testing, they just trust that Monsanto says that it is safe,

And please, don't get me started about "nature does it for millennia" bullshit. Nature does not insert random genes from some weird funguses or fish into corn (or other plants).
The natural world will have NO PROBLEMS paying the price in working around these new toxins in the plants. It will take a few years and hundreds of generations of critters, but they will adapt. Are we willing to pay the same price too? Sooner or later, we may just find our that our improved food is killing us and we don't know why.
We have evolved to eat the food we have available, not the other way around. We are FAR away from an understanding how our body works completely. We know the big picture, but that's it. So please, don't call people that question our "perfect understanding of nature" into question. You just sound like those stupid people,

Did you hear that they confiscated a child's turkey sandwich in the U.S. because the state inspector deemed it unhealthy? Then they gave her chicken nuggets. Freedom is dead.

Re:WHAT?
Except people were encouraged to take out second mortgages to pay off their bills, take trips, do some property improvement. When a bank approves 40 applications without looking at what their financial situation is or their income, that is a huge problem. College tuition isn't going up because of easy loans, most states have raised tuition due to the financial crisis. Look at this article from The Huffington Post about student loans and debt.
You can't blame the government for these scandals when it is the banks who ultimately decide who gets these loans and on what terms. -

Stop giving them ideas
Underpaid for the stuff I do as it is. I'm sure everyone will agree that if the company is reaping substantial benefit from having you on board - you should be getting a slice of the cake - if anything to keep you motivated. A good worker is a happy worker. Of course, there are these altruist types, subject of a different discussion...

Funny you should mention that.

Ah yes. I think we know why you don't have mod points.
