OS X apps (was Re:Wait)
FWIW, the most useful list of software I've found recently is Hyper Jeff's OS X (Native) Applications list:
http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/apps.php?w=1
which allows filtering by license type.
That said, there's not much useful new software coming out (I'd love to be proven wrong w/ download links) --- mostly it's just up-dates to stuff I've already d/l'd and installed:
LyX
Scribus
InkscapeI'd love to find a modern alternative / successor to Zoomracks (I want a freeform database which allows calculations on information w/in it).

Re:Had this one at home.
I don't recall it getting into making a Defender clone (but my memory may be faulty or I didn't finish the book), but my favorite book for Apple II assembly programming was "Apple Graphics and Arcade Game Design" by Jeffrey Stanton. Amazon.com has some used copies available.
A little more research and I can say yes, this is the same book that promised to teach how to make a Defender clone.

Re:My MacbookAside from that, I find myself searching google when I need one of the many applications that is missing from the package repos.
They definitely have different methods of application discovery. For example, stopping by BestBuy or Frys and browsing is not much of an option for Linux. When looking online a good first place to look is here.
So yes, OS X has basic functionality out of the box, but it's a long way from competing with Linux. Are you comparing the two solely on one criteria? I agree Linux wins on package management and several other features, but it also loses on quite a few. It sure wins on handling OSS software, but loses on commercial.

Links to Mac OS X Freeware/ Shareware SitesI guess 30 days simply isn't enough time to discover the multitude of OS X resources, and software sites. A couple that I've used through the years, and have helped me find some fantastic software are: All of the above sites list a multitude of software ranging from commercial, to as-free-as-can-be. I wouldn't expect anyone to find every single program they need within 30 days, as 14 years later, I'm still discovering fantastic Mac apps. Take what you read with a grain of salt. Just because one person doesn't see something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Free and OSS Mac Software
Not sure where they're getting their information from, but I use sites like
http://www.freemacware.com/
http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/
http://www.opensourcemac.org/
and have never had any problem finding the right OSS or freeware tool to do a job.
I also enjoy perusing individual people's lists such as
http://wiki.43folders.com/index.php/OS_X_Inventori es
http://generaldisarray.wordpress.com/2006/02/11/ni fty-os-x-apps-list/
http://www.digitaldarknet.net/thelist/index.php?pa ge=macintosh
http://macskill.com/softwareupdate
and getting some great recommendations for apps to try out.
It seems like the author simply didn't do enough research before making his report.
Hope these links can help others find stuff they might otherwise not have known about. -
Re:Science?
Here are a couple of links to MacOSX science applications http://www.macinchem.fsnet.co.uk/macosx.htm , http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/apps.php?sub=20, http://xanana.ucsc.edu/xtal/
I was in Harvard/MIT last week talking to a few people and I'd say >50% were using Macs -
Re:Kinda OT.. yet relevant to this thread
This is the best. Here you can even search specifically for Open Source apps, Cocoa apps only etc.

os X?
Right now it seems like the most innovative apps are developed in Cocoa. -
They had to do it
Not a big surprise, really. With the exception of HTML editing, the crop of newer editors for OS X (TextMate, SEE, Smultron, etc.) were making BBEdit look like that smelly old t-shirt stuck at the bottom of the drawer. You used to love that shirt, but now there are a whole lot of new shirts for you to wear, only without all of the rips and stains.
Since BBEdit is underfeatured and way overpriced for general text editing, Bore Bones had to do something to keep their name recognition alive... -

Re:Not recommended for G4 users, G5 seems ok...
Most of the problems I've encountered are with Safari. The following sites all have similar problems and are entirely unusable with Safari after applying the patch:
...and if those sites update the version of OpenCube's QuickMenu Pro that they're using, to fix the browser type/version check, they'll probably be usable again. See the 9/8/04 item on this site and a 9/8/04 item on this site.

Re:He's just another sheepAs for making a headless "iMac," first, that wouldn't be an iMac, and second, that's not what Apple needs. They have a whole bunch of headless machines--what the heck do you think a PowerMac is??? And if I'm not mistaken, the PowerMacs come with iLife installed. So....he wants them to make a PowerMac. Yay! They're already doing that!
There *is* a market for a headless iMac - witness the prior iBox. The issue with power macs are processor overkill (vs. eMac / iMac), and size (not all mac users need dual-cpu options
...).This article isn't the only hue & cry for a headless iMac - many others have called for this prior
...You cannot argue that the mac price point is too high, and then provide the masses with 2 options - cpu overkill or integrated monitor
... having said all this look how well the cube fared (-; -
Marcus Aurelius had some good things to say
When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity, lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out of tune longer than you can help. Habitual recurrence to the harmony will increase your mastery of it.

Re:is mac os like sgi's irix?
You will have to look through sites like Fink and the Darwin project to see what they have. There are a lot of good CLI apps ported to OSX either through Aqua or X11
a bunch of links here.
Three ***'s mean Jeff likes the site. -
Re:New MacReally? The last time I checked the local BestBuy still only had 1 shelf of Mac software. The local Circuit City still had 0 shelves of Mac software
well dude, the last time i checked hyperjeff's software archive there were 7636 mac appz on there, up from about 1000 when he first started. most of them freeware, shareware apps. and since you're probably worried about choice, you should note that m$ has chased enough developers off the platform that their shareware offerings are shrinking these days.
apple is a fun devel platform, and if you don't like it, port your linux software onto it!

Re:Explanation
Now, can someone tell me what practical applications there might be of this? Or is it strictly an abstract concept?
People thought imaginary numbers were voodoo when the concept was introduced. As an EE, that magic box in front of you now is largely possible because of the applications of those numbers ~350 years after the fact. Check out A history of hypercomplex numbers.
Math is about the language of patterns and logic. Dicovering a new principle is akin to explaining on a language - you have more tools to describe things with.
I do wish math -teachers- had better abilities to describe and show visually why math is nifty. If I had a good math teacher in grade school, my life would be different now. I was lucky enough to have one in my first year of university (Dr. Chernoff @ UNB - you 0wn), and that's why I survived my engineering degree. Math is neither hard, or useless. It's like saying language is useless.

Re:I wish Apple Would Shut me Down...I see why this is meant to be funny (not much software available for OS X, haha) but it's not really based in reality.
There are over 6400 native OS X applications, so release of OS X software could hardly be called rare.

Re:Mac P2P Software ListGood list. And what amazes me is that it needs a
/. thread to come up with that list. Most of those apps could be found at google without much effort. And if all fails this page has sorted lists with all Software that runs under Mac OS X.

Shaking the Apple tree for page hits...
In a nutshell, this article is saying, "Waaa! It's hard to be a real programmer!!"
Who didn't already know that?
For an anecdotal refutation, there are more interface tweaks available than I have time to explore.
Specifically regarding themes/schemes/skins/etc: It's a little bit of a bummer that Apple has never sanctioned them, but I can say after twiddling with WinAmp over on the dark side, that most interface remakes are absolute crap anyway. It's a perfectly windows-like waste of time sorting through the thousands of available skins to find the one skin that's an actual improvement to the original.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
In case you thought it was a serious article, please peruse your friendly Mac OS file archives.

It gives expanded resources. You can run it rootless so XWindows apps run alongside Aqua apps.
Steve Jobs knew this would happen. Kind of like Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come."
Here is one screenshotWindowmaker and other goodies
this one is nice too. a lot going on

Re:The "Apple Tax"
since March I have gotten at least five free upgrades. OSX 10.1 will be a free download. If you buy the disc, it will just be the cost of the medium and associated costs. $20 dollars is less than a good night at the local pub. $20. is cheaper than RedHat, YellowDog, SuSE, Mandrake........
They will be giving away discs at some Apple dealers.
Can you run Xwindows rootless on WindowsME?
Kids, do try this at home I will have AbiWord running on OSX soon. -
There are hundreds of Cocoa applications out there
The list at http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/Cocoa.html shows 445 of them. And this not a complete list !
Also note that most of the graphical applications and graphical administrative tools shipped by Apple with Mac OS X are Cocoa apps. Nearly all the dev tools from Apple for Mac OS X development (Project Builder, Interface Builder, ObjectAlloc etc.) are Cocoa Apps. -
This is where the Mac OSX is going. method to the
Remember, if you build it they will come. Jobs knew the UNIX/Linux fans couldn't resist. Look for more BSD apps to be ported. for now check out this screenshot. Yes that is photoshop. Yes Apple still matters.
