There is this article found on the net from 1994 where someone had "rediscovered" the secret back in 1981, with the development of "ultrahigh carbon steels". I also recall an old Scientific american article from the 1980s (?) which went into the making of Dasmacus Steel So I imagine that the secret has been rediscovered several times over the past 20 years, There is more on this from another source here and also here. Other resources are here on the Materials Science and Engineering newsletter. I see that that the people in the article are right now looking to put a patent on it. They won't be able to get a pattent if it was already developed in recent history.

I'm sorry to report you wrong. August 25 was the date that Linus first publicly announced that fact that he was working on something. The actual work had started some time before. Somewhere in April IIRC.

Actually, with the tara plugin, you can play Real files with Winamp. And if you can play them, you know what that means, don't you? Yes! That means you can write out the .wav! I used that frequently when 2600 still hadn't converted their Off the Hook Real Audio shows to .mp3. Very handy. It needs the Real codec installed, of course, but it doesn't use its interface. Just a nice, boring one.

These Dual 1.99GHz Palomino benchmarks are fake. They're Photoshopped pictures. You can see this picture here (http://tbloss.hypermart.net/images/fake.png), which has some parts of the 'benchmarks' enlarged by pixel resize (so no filtering hasbeen applied). Section 1 clearly shows the very wrong color graduation in the benchmark bars, section 2 shows that some text is not properly aligned and section 3 shows the incredible difference in pixelation on different parts of the picture (which could be attributed to compression). Lastly (this is not included in the picture), the 'Dhrystone' text in the "Athlon benchmark" is wrongly positioned (too low) in comparison with the rest of the benchmark bars...

Justice costs time and money, you have to pick your business partners carefully, and it's much harder to profit from your inventions if you don't already have lots of money. It isn't fair, but nobody has figured out how to make things work any better.

His advice is something you really, really should to take to heart. You may choose not to follow it, and there may be good reasons to, but you run significant risks if you do.

As for Hotline, I think the claims of "innovation" are somewhat overblown. Hotline probably succeeded because it was a well-written piece of software and was at the right place at the right time, not because it did something nobody else had done before. Several other academic groups and companies, however, have been working on similar functionality for years.

This is simply my pessimistic interpretation of Hinckley's "advice" that he leaves for you programmers out there, as you can read for yourselves here. Okay, I understand that he might hold a slight grudge, but I still think he's sending part of the wrong message along with his own...

1. Always give in to those that are accepted as more powerful and never fight the system. Let them win because they have the money, and money always wins! Don't attempt to change it because you can't. (Or, if you would rather, you can follow my personal philosophy, which is very similar to the Golden Rule, which is to act accordingly - trust until given a reason not to trust, like until given a reason not to like; it's that "live and let live" philosophy. Of course, you could always do it your way, which is what I really recommend. Use your own judgment. All businessmen aren't the same, no matter how many people try to convince you otherwise. There are honorable people in this world.)

2. Don't do it... Short-cuts or easy ways are like cheating, and you need to work to earn your keep, you know? (Honorable; I don't really disagree.)

3. Trust no one! Always trust no one! You cannot trust anyone! (Back to my "live and let live" philosophy - I'll trust someone until they give me a good reason not to trust them, and then I'll react accordingly.)

4. Very good advice. This can be backed up by words from John Stuart Mill in his political/philosophical essay, On Liberty, in which he asserted:

Though [one's] opinion be an error, it may, and very commonly does, contain a portion of truth; and since the general or prevailing opinion on any subject is rarely or never the whole truth, it is only by the collision of adverse opinions that the remainder of the truth has any chance of being supplied.

In other words, no single source of information has the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Another quote from a good friend of mine - "There is only one absolute truth: this is absolutely true" - meaning there is no absolute truth to any situation. The only way you can go about finding the best "truth" for any situation is to vary your sources of information. Excellent advice, that #4 was, I say.

Hinckley then goes on to say how easy it is for someone to fall into those traps, "even after someone warned you." Judging by that statement, he would assume that I would be one of the first to fall into one of those traps. Maybe he's right. Maybe not. We know without the experience to back it up.

The best advice anyone can offer on any situation, really, is to research it well and use your best judgment, and use caution.

And finally... I wish the best of luck to anyone losing their own rights and freedoms simply because the big businesses have the resources to take them.

(Interestingly, this is one of those situations that I have seen organizations such as the ACLU playing both sides. One month the ACLU sides with a company suing an employee for the employee's off-the-clock work, and the next month the ACLU sides with an employee being sued by his company. I wonder how those standards work...)

Yeah and that little daemon, "Windows Critical Update Notification", then checks MS for security patches every 5 minutes. If you change the interval in the scheduler to something more sensible, say, once a day, it magically changes the interval back to every 5 minutes.

In knowledge base article QQ230318, Microsoft states "Due to the importance of this component, it is by design that the Windows Critical Update Notification schedule can not be modified or disabled".

My guess is Microsoft didn't want people monkeying with this, so that the Notification would be assured of being run. They achieved the exact opposite. The five minute interval is so annoying I don't run the notification at all, I uninstalled it. I check for updates by hand.

Note: Supposedly, there is a way to change all of this in the registry, so that your change of the interval takes hold. For example, see this. But I've tried that twice and it hasn't worked. Here is another discussion of this problem at technofile.

On http://truc.hypermart.net/, a "random" link exchange site, I see an iframe, not just image. Iframe ads are annoying for several reasons, although I doubt advertisers use them just to be annoying.

- IE4 (but not later versions) will replace an entire page with a placeholder page if you go to a site with a missing iframe.

- If you try to block the hoster of an iframe using a "hosts" file and you use Mozilla as your browser, you get an alert each time you visit a site with a missing iframe. Hopefully this will be fixed in bug 28586 by implementing placeholder pages for all missing pages.

- Iframes will probably allow cookies for a short amount of time after browsers fix a similar problem for images, simply because it takes more coding to fix the problem for iframes. (Have any major browsers fixed the cookies-on-images bug?)

- Iframes allow Java ads, such as the infamous punch-the-monkey ad. (Jason Kersey removed all ads from mozillazine.org, and I think he did that because people complained about that ad so much.) LE doesn't seem to use Java ads at this point, although I have seen several "fake dialog" ads there.

I also heard someone tell me that some linkexchange ads were <script src="something.linkexchange.com"> at some point in order to allow linkexchange to update the entire banner code whenever they needed to. I think this might have just been a rumor -- can you imaging what a cracking target that would turn linkexchange into? Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor?

Btw, why is it that when I click a linkexchange banner, the site linked to almost never has a linkexchange banner itself?

I remember, years ago, during the (seeming) height of the US military's interest in rail guns (and Popular Science, etc., etc...) a small group of college students with a more efficient answer...

it was a COIL Gun.

Really the same basic idea as a rail gun, but they 'wrapped' the rails around the payload to get more efficient use of the electromotive force -- more 'bang for your watt,' so to speak.

That, and it looked more like a gun barrel. It was so much cooler looking!

Google turns up some interesting things, from someone trying to sell handheld weapon plans, to science-museum, brick-destroying, 900 foot-per-second Coaxial Electromagnetic Mass Accelerators. The second one is rather small, too -- something like that should scale up without too much trouble...

God, that looks like fun. This brings back that feeling I had 10 years ago when I really wanted to build one of these things. Maybe now I'll pull my head out of the computer long enough...

I put up a mirror on hypermart (yes, they'll probably terminate my account for /. traffic, good thing I never use it anymore) at http://lpisystems.hypermart.net/linux-2.2.18.tar.g z so a couple of you can grab it there.

Also, if you have a win32 box nearby, you can try downloading it with FlashGet and opening up 10 sessions getting different sections of the file. I'm not saying that's good for all the mirrors if everybody opens up 10 connections, I'm just saying that you can get an unfair advantage over the single-connection people once the server starts restricting bandwidth to individual connections. I used it to get Red Hat 7 and CounterStrike 1.0, and it works damn well.

Yes, considering the fact that computers are not like roads, and that since most run Microsoft Technology, they can perform at Mach 10 at a point of time and be out for 10 months the very next moment on. So how can we expect anybody to map out "reliable" routes?
They'll most probably end up with so many "bad" routes that used to function well when they tested it, that they'll do the survey all over again.

Still, I wish the company a lot of good luck.

I know this is a nitpick: httpQ, Winamp Control Center (alt), and Muse all offer some control of Winamp or streams from an HTML interface, and they offer source code too. Other general purpose plugins for Winamp expose hooks in Visual Basic and stuff. If you feel like it, you can build a wholly different interface with entirely different capabilities, and a set of new problems - like people complaining just because of a new interface. Oh well.
