I don't see what all the fuss about 'cybersquatting' is... Domains are like real estate... if you can find a great place in a good location for a good price ($70) why shouldn't you buy it? I'm all for grabbing as many good domains as possible. Hell, a buddy of mine has 300+ domains he can play with. I can't wait for new TLD's though, it's getting alot harder to find decent domains to pick up... Though you can still find some pretty nice ones if you sit on the netsol whois page and free associate.
It sucks that you have to pay up front now... back in the day you could think up a good domain and register it for free and park it at hypermart until you decided what to do with it. And if you end up not using the domain? Oh well, the final notice comes and goes and netsol would take it back.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Merry Christmas, and in defense of this operating system, I would like to say that we are creating a developers environment..... We are not looking towards creating the most portable or even something for regular users... The V2 Labs guys (who created this in the first place) created this with a goal of maximizing multimedia. This operating system boots in about 1 second. So you can eventually have this sucker being your mp3 player in your car, or anything else and guess what... It will boot in 1 second!

Why would anyone want to work with this?
I work with it because there is a lot needed to make this a fully functional operating system. I don't know about most of you, but I wasn't able to help contribute to the base of any other operating system, and the experience for me is a good one. It may not turn out to be everything we want, but I am learning a lot about shells and operating systems.

Speaking of shells, if you want to get a shell for V2 OS, go to v2dash.hypermart.net It is up to version 0.007a (codename Golden Eye). It is open source, so if you want to help in the coding of a shell (unix style), now is a great opertunity..... Actually, It was I who talked to you and your girlfriend on the telephone. I was over at his house. The prints came down after I talked to him about it being the right thing to do. If I remember correctly, you in no way threatened us at any time. Besides, you lived in a freshman dorm at the time. What are you going to do, get a bunch of your friends together with that RA of your and beat our ass? I think not. First, your girlfriend should keep her shirt on. I'm currently in the throws of the same type of project as you.... The only addition that I have is I need to include an accounting system written in Visual Foxpro. My requirements are to access a MySQL system that's our main database system, with some information needing to be handled via MSACCESS, and needing to query the Foxpro based system as well. To make it even more challenging, the Foxpro based system HAS to be on NT server per our support contract with the vendor! Nasty, but there's a way to make it all play nice!

I decided to use Perl instead of PHP mainly because of Perl's flexibility, runs on NT and Linux with little changes, excellent performance, etc. I'm not trying to start up a holy war here, use what you're comfortable with. The biggest hurdle was accessing Foxpro system on NT. For that I used OpenLink Multi-Tier 3.2 on the NT box. All you'll need to do there is configure the ODBC driver for Access. If you can read the *.mdb file with Excel, then the ODBC driver is configured properly. Install the OpenLink on the NT box - read the docs that come with OpenLink, it's also straight forward. You'll also need to grab the UDBC & ODBC stuff from OpenLink as well. That needs to be used to compile the DBD::ODBC perl module. Again, RTFM it's all in there. I did run into one glitch on an unrecognized command when compiling DBD::ODBC with UDBC. I only tested the module against Foxpro tables, and it did generate some errors. They were all due to SQL commands being longer than 80 chars - not a problem in my environment though.

Once that's up and running, and you've decided to use Perl - head over to the DBI/DBD Faq. Section 3 & 4 covers what you need to do. It's really not as hard as you think to connect perl to use ODBC, even on a seperate NT server. Connecting to any other ODBC compatible database works the same way.

From what I've read, PHP is just as easy. I first started developing our databases using PHP, but switched because I have other projects that Perl can be used, but not PHP. Perl looks to be slightly more complex than PHP for straight database access, but so far it hasn't been that bad. Some of the PHP code that I have looks real close to perl, so the switch isn't as painful as I thought.

I haven't tried this, but if you dump NT you could use iODBC to access the Access DB. All the parts are there, I've just never tried it. That way, you could still distribute your database in MDB format. Another option would be to keep a skeleton MDB around, and run everything on MySQL. When needed, you could just dump the MySQL tables out to the MDB tables and send it on its way. The second thing I did was set up a test network and just started working on it. I've been able to connect all the different databases together after about 12 hours of work.... Just to give you an idea of time and effort involved.

Any other suggestions for a good Usenet search engine?

My current choice is Deja, though I hate what's happened to the site as it's been portalized. I use an alternate page. Actually, I've created my own simplified, localhost search pages for the major search engines I frequent -- I don't actually hit the sites until I get results.

There are also tools like dejasearch which provide a command-line interface to search engines, and compile results to a single, local, file for later browsing.

That said, what alternative Usenet archives are there? I've used Remarq on the odd occasion, though it strikes me as too busy and unfriendly as well. Pity.

It's a perl script which will query dejanews for you and consolidate all of the found messages into one large html file which you can digest later off line.

Linux is a great idea! You can set him up as a regular user so
he can't hurt the system while he's learning. Then he can get some Basic Linux Training.
Would you really feel comfortable giving a grandparent root access on a Windows box ? I didn't think so.
OTOH, seting him up with Windows will give you the opportunity to spend a lot more time together.

I must say that this article was very inspiring. I only wish I could have seen it when I was first getting into Linux.

My first real triumph was getting PPP to work. I was using Slackware 3.6 through UMSDOS and using PPPSETUP to configure PPP. When it connected I was amazed. I had read stories on USENET about people's nightmares with PPP. I had gotten it to work on the first try. I've got to say that this is what kept me going at Linux and kept me from giving up. I have since moved onto to a true EXT2 Linux system and I am working on learning C programming.

I do the DJing for a show on a christian community radio station ( Fish FM) here in Australia. While I don't see that any FCC decision will affect me in any way, I have had first-hand experience with quite amateurish radio equipment. Fish FM shares a community band (currently has no license, but is expecting to be awarded one in the next few weeks) and transmits 70 watts. For this, Fish has to host a transmitter on a ridge (extremely expensive), transmit from the studio to it with a link transmitter (another expensive device). Not to mention the cost of the board, the compressor, the equipment, etc etc etc.

I don't see how, without experience and money, the average joe public could create a successful radio station, especially considering every other interested joe p. would be attempting the same thing.

I personally am interested in using the technology for wireless communication. The lack of discussion on this point has made me wonder whether it is somehow unrelated to the FCC business (not the impression I got). I would like to walk around the house with my laptop, and stay connected to my network. In fact, I would like to also take it outside, maybe down to the lake (a few hundred metres from my house).

Any comments on why licensing for broadcasting for lower power transmitters is particularly useful?

What a load of nonsense, to begin with you are completely clueless, predictibility or lack of adaptability in a system does not mean it isn't ai. There is a lot of those traits in humans the most intelligent human. Ants are about as predictable and non adaptable as can be, yet they have better pattern recognition then we are able to produce so far.

Well, it appears that YOU are the completely clueless one. Predictability and lack of adaptibility are EXACTLY the cases that would cause an AI to fail the Turing test. You see rationality in humans, not PREDICTABILITY. Predictability of this magnitude in a human would be a SEVERE obsessive-compulsive behavior, a very BAD thing by human standards.

As to your point about ants, they are NOT predictable either. If you see an ant, do you know whether it will turn left or right? Didnt think so.

You think I'm joking? I'm an AI researcher, with 4 years neural network experience under my belt. I mean REAL AI too. And I have seen some neural nets on my bench that have some incredible pattern recognition, so dont automatically assume that we have not produced an ANT-GRADE intelligence yet.

Do you know what an expert system is? And what the hell are you trying to pass off as an adaptable expert system? Just about any instinct-based animal is an adaptable expert system. Basically thats a silly definition so don't use it.

Don't make stupid comments. Do YOU know what an expert system is? An expert system, or knowledge-based system, is a ruleset. Simple as that. Quake is an expert system. Altavista is an expert system. An ADAPTIVE expert system is one in which it uses an additional technique in order to append new rules into its ruleset. An animal is NOT an adaptive expert system!!!! THAT is stupid and shows a lack of understanding. An animal is a hard-prewired neural net. There remains a big difference. If you show a snake a frog, what will it do? You tell me. Please. If the snake really is an expert system, it will always do the SAME THING. If it is an adaptive expert system, after the first time it will always do the same thing.

I'm not annoyed by the use of the term AI by game developers - that's the role their behavior engines are trying to fill.

You obviously havent looked very hard. Neural networks and CORE, even old-fashioned analog fuzzy-logic are much closer to AI than what you seem to think.

I'll TELL you what I've done. I've designed several neural networks and robot-control systems. They work. They demonstrate intelligence. They can learn to read. They demonstrate emotion. They adapt in unforseen and incomprehensible ways (well, if you want to try to comprehend a 200,000 page formula, it COULD theoretically be comprehended). Then, if you want to know the essence of REAL intelligence, what makes real intelligence different from computer calculations:
RANDOMNESS!
This is the ONE thing I see missing from most "so-called" AI's. In fact, my early computer-based neural-nets had a big problem with this. They could adapt pretty well, and performed better than fuzzy-logic, but they didnt show the emotion that my dedicated-hardware ones did. Without the random timing delays, it didnt work properly. When I introduced a computer-generated random element, the system went to hell. It wasnt until I had added a TRUELY random component (generated outside the computer with special hardwrare) that it worked properly. If you care why, go read quantum physics. relevant.

Every day I go to school wishing for it to be different. Wanting a place for hope, a place to learn, a place without hate, and a place where being different isn't so wrong. They tell me how I should be just like everybody else, how I should play their sports, how I should join their clubs, and how I should give up everything I have to be like them. They all want me to conform to their rules, but they won't tell me why. They have no answers to the questions I ask. No one can tell me why I should put up with so much torment; they only tell me that I should.

The bell rings and horror fills my heart. It's so hard to force myself into the halls, into the torment of loneliness. I hear their shouts from all around; I can feel their cold stares into what they don't understand; and I can taste their bitterness as they mock me and laugh at what's different from them, what they don't understand.
