Re:Good animation, bad stills
Forget it, I found it. For those that are interested go here.
There is a movie and some stills at the bottom. -
Waaah waaah, sniffle, it's a cartoon
I watched the movie yesterday and I think it looks like the shit! Samurai Link baby! Or is it Link Jack? The gameplay looks freaking fun as hell to play.
This is NOT Dragon's Lair! DL was NOT a game, it was a cartoon that you only got to keep watching if you were fast enough to hit a button here and there when prompted. There was no interactivity!
I can't wait to get my Nintendo Numb Thumbs(tm) on this game and be in perfect control of beautiful cartoon Hyrule. I forgot my PS2 existed for the month after I bought Paper Mario; the storyline was a bit (ok a lot) kiddish, but the gameplay rocked!
Seems like Nintendo is the only company that actually cares about making fun games any more. Yes, they target kids. Who do you think has the most time to play games? Sony and MS are only out to get the dollars of teenage impulse buyers, who have jobs, but still live at home. If a game sucks, they will just buy another one with the next paycheck burning a hole in their pockets.
Want eye candy? Watch some Wave Race movies! -
Re:ZeldaI could not picture Zelda to look like this after seeing last years Spaceworld footage and the N64 versions.
No kidding. From a January 26th article at IGN:
There's far too much detail to believe that Nintendo would scrap the models and make new ones. So, we think it's safe to say the new Link will look a lot like this.
When they're off, they're off. -
"Everybody" is people who follow IGNOver at IGN, for a while now, there's been a preview of Zelda. It was shown at E3 in 2000. They show an incredibly dark, incredibly detailed, and incredibly lifelike personage for both Link and Ganondorf (also called Ganon). The stills for the preview are just phenomenal (I can't say that enough). Go over and take a look at what the original concept was.
Everybody's bitching because it feels like the old bait-and-switch. Miyamoto dangles these beautiful carrots in front of everybody, showcasing exactly what the Gamecube is capable of, and then he says, "No, sorry, we've completely re-designed the game, and now it looks cartoony. Sorry." He has even admitted that the change was made before E3 of 2000, and the shots were of a game that was not in the works
It's not that the new game is different from other Zeldas... It's that the new game is not the game we were shown.
-
Looks Like Herdy Gerdy
It looks as if Miyamoto liked Herdy Gerdy, so much... he decided a cartoon game would be a good way to showcase the new system. Its pretty clear that the new console horsepower is allowing Miyamoto and others to design movies (cartoons) you can play.

Re:One wordThat was what we where all told, but the pre-release packaging for Halo on XBox has the "Only on Xbox" logo on it. Full article on Ign. Some further stuff on voodooextreme claims that Microsoft will evaluate the PC version after the launch.
Do we take it that "Only on Xbox" really means "On the Xbox until other ports are finished", it doesn't have quite the same impact.

Re:No problem.
Okay.
Metroid
Zelda (in motion)
(No Mega Man yet, but after the last couple of Mega Mans, are you sure you want it?)
And how about Super Smash Brothers (which will have Pit from Kid Icarus and the Ice Climbers!) and Crazy Taxi and SSX Tricky for those of you who missed them on the PS2/Dreamcast.
Great original titles plus the killer app titles from other consoles should make for quite a success.
"Kiddy" or not, gameplay and unique franchises count, and in the current platform market, Nintendo's got my vote (to sit next to my PS2). -

Spaceworld Filled with BAD NGC News
Gamecube delay
SSB: MEELE DELAY
ETERNAL Darknes delay
Zelda-It's cel shaded (looks like rugrats-yuck)
Mario-looks like mario 64
Nintendo is gaining profit from the hardware sales.
2 games at launch. -
How about some more info! This news all comes from the SpaceWorld conference, Nintendo's biggest games conference (only for Nintendo and 3rd party Nintendo developers) held in Japan this week/weekend.
For coverage, check out:
Gamespot's SpaceWorld Coverage
Most impressive to me is the footage of the new Mario and Zelda games. While lots of other developers worry about targetting the "cool" gamers, the "hardcore" gamers, Nintendo seems to be the one of the only ones focusing on the FUN in their games, and targetting the kid in all of us (as well as the real kids among us.)
;-) That's going to be the factor that wins them the #1 position in the upcomming console wars, in my opinion. This focus on pure fun is evident in their entire GameCube and Game Boy Advance lineup.paulb

All about the games!
Although this may cause Nintendo to lose some customers, I think most people will be buying consoles based on which games they want to play. So this probably won't be too big of a deal for Nintendo.
Speaking of the games, Space World is starting, and there are some new clips from the movies coming out. There are some at GameSpot and IGN (QuickTime only at IGN). -
Mini Discs are getting all the luvin'...
The smaller discs seem to be getting all the luvin' lately. Nintendo is using the same sized disc, but DVD, for the GameCube. Matsushita (better known was Panasonic to us Yankee's) developed the technology for them. It can hold 1.8 gig's. I sure wouldn't mind getting ahold of portable MP3 player that could use one of them

Re:Is Sid Meier actually involved?
You can find the following at this Civ review at ign.com.
"Sid plays the game once or twice a week right now." So begins my conversation with Jeff Briggs, President of Firaxis. But although Sid Meier isn't actually coding this game, it's still his baby. He and Jeff sat down at the beginning of the development process to come up with ways to enlarge and improve the existing game. The idea is to make this the "ultimate" version of Civ. Sid's taking an active role in the design but Jeff Briggs is responsible for leading the team. Jeff Morris is acting as producer for the title and showed us quite a bit of the game.
The quote is from halfway down the page in the section titled E3 2001. There's no anchor tag I can link directly to... won't XPointer support be nice some day?.

Re:Launch Figure Mistakes
I hesistate to agree with calling production problems a "mistake" when the system still made it's debut in time for Christmas. If we are looking for a mistake, it would probabaly be the lackluster game selection.
But anyway.. I believe you actually mean they have learned from Nintendo's mistake (if you really want to call it that), as they made it long before Sony was even a glimmer in the game console market..
Which is good, of course--it means Nintendo may have learned from their OWN "mistake", which I hear is always a good idea. :)

This could go on for ages, so.....
What I meant with the crasy comparisons of consoles, was that i asked for a example of a ported game. And i just meant that the consoles should be relatively equal in generation. So no examples of SNES to N64 ports(since a PS2-GC is relatively close in specs, the SNES/N64 are not). And to support my statement of ports being close in apperence, heres a quote of the Crazy Taxi preview for GameCube at IGN:
The GameCube version of the game is expected to look just as good as the Dreamcast original, if not better".
Now, you could belive that the "if not better part", meant that the cars have 5000 extra polyfons and the game is really upgaded to fit the GC. I can only ask, when? When have this happend in the past? And but seriusly, how much differnce isthere between the PS2 and the DC versions? I have both maschines, and have played the games on both maschines. And this port, like most other Ive played are relatively alike, in fact, I have owned a: Megadrive(genesis in US?), SNES, SATURN, PSX, N64, DC and a PS2(soon to come a GameCube to). And Ive played quite a few "ports" through the years, and to my experince. VERY few of them, in my oppinion, are remarkably different. If you find this lame just give a example of a PORT then, and remember games like the Resident Evil and Toom Raider on the DC arent ports, they have been developed specifially for the DC.
And the ports being developed for the GameCube right now, are reported very alike to the originals(And if you check out the GameCube Phantasy Star Online shots, they differ VERY little from the DC version).
And on a closing note, Im just going to make one last comment. You write in your reply that: "Lastly, the PS2 and GAMECUBE are not very simular at all. One is a home entertainment system, while the other is a thoroughbred game system".
It seems like you think that the GameCube is a FAR more powerfull system than the PS2? Check out theGameCube Vs. PS2, they(IGN CUBE, BTW so you cant say they are biased or anything) compare the two consoles and interview Naugthy Dog and Bioware. Which have games in development on both consoles, one leaning to PS2 and one leaning to GC as the most powerfull. But youll get the picture, the maschines, AS gameconsoles, are VERY close in spec. -

Re:I Miss The Old-School Final Fantasy Games
There are two Final Fantasy anthologies for Playstation 1: the first one has FF V (never seen in US) and VI (3 for the SNES) which are direct ports; 16 bit all the way. The only changes are that there are intro and I think outro FMVs. Everything else is the same as the SNES/SuperFamicoms. The second anthology has Final Fantasy IV (2 in the US) only retranslated, not hacked down, and with some other improvements. The other title in that set is Chrono Trigger, another widely-regarded classic from the SNES days. Final Fantasy Anthology

Re:External Harddrive
And stop bitching about XBOX just because it comes from Microsoft. Look past the freakin' name for once and see that MS might just have something good on their hands.
It doesn't matter.
I'd rather give Nintendo my money than Microsoft, just so I know my cash won't help finance a company that produces shite software and plans on extorting even more money out of users.
At least Nintendo's business practices are slightly less evil, and mostly confined to the toy market, anyway.
Besides, (IIRC)the Gamecube will cost $50-100 less, looks fucking killer, AND Nintendo is known for making some of the best games ever.
Microsoft can take their box (oh, sorry, BOX) and shove it.

Double takeThe IGN article says, in part:
If nothing else, it should give some competition to the latest Star Trek spin-off Enterprise, which bows next season
The first time I read that, I thought it said "Enterprise, which blows next season"...

Nintendo says don't do it.Nintendo released a statement about this. The screw controls the voltage to the screen and will ultimately ruin your GBA if you adjust it.
A positive and negative voltage controls Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs). The "contrast control" that you are referring to is actually a flicker control. The adjustment is used to synchronize the positive and negative voltages. If these voltages are out of adjustment then the LCD will no longer respond correctly. The result will be an excess charge built up in the liquid crystal and permanently damage the LCD. The excessive charge gives the appearance of a brighter screen because the liquid crystal is not reacting properly to the voltages applied. When the adjustment of the voltages is correct the changing polarities will not allow a charge to build up, which prolongs the LCD life.
This adjustment is set by the manufacturer or must be performed by a qualified Nintendo Technician using proper equipment (Proper lighting, special tools, test equipment and software). Adjusting the flicker without the proper tools and lighting will put the voltages out of sync and may cause damage to the unit.
Here's a story about it at IGN.

Nintendo says, "Don't touch it!"

UPDATE!!:Re:Nyko and GB(C|A), so happy together...According to a new article on pocket.ign.com, that "contrast switch" actually adjusts the voltage in the LCD. Tampering with it could cause a charge build up, potentially resulting in the LCD blowing out. Its your $100...

Its not a Contrast controlIts a flicker adjustment.
And they don't suggest you play around with it.
