Re:Why is this a bad thing?
x*x = 25 is an example of a quadratic equation. The "solutions" to this equation are the numbers that make the equation true when you plug them in for x. Here the solutions are x=5 and x=-5 since 5*5 = 25 and (-5)*(-5) = 25.
In general, an equation is "quadratic" if it looks like this:
a*x*x + b*x = c
where a, b, and c are fixed numbers (constants). In the previous example, x*x = 25, is the same as 1*x*x + 0*x = 25, which fits the form of a quadratic equation with a = 1, b = 0, and c = 25.
You can find the solutions to any quadratic equation with a method called "completing the square". A good geometric/pictorial explanation of completing the square can be found here:
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/3415/completesq uarexl1.png
(note that in that image the starting equation is slightly different, but essentially the same if you divide both sides by a and rename the constants)
You can also gain intuition about quadratic equations by graphing them. To graph a quadratic equation, you make it so that the right hand side is no longer a constant, but rather a variable. eg: x*x = 25 -> x*x = y = ? . Then you pick values of x, compute the y that they correspond to, and then plot those (x,y) pairs as points on a graph. The vertical position of the point is the y value, and the horizontal position is the x value. If you do this for a lot of values of x, the shape that emerges is a curve called a parabola.
Another way to think of the solution to a quadratic equation x*x = 25 is the horizontal position of the intersection of the parabola graph of x*x = y, and the horizontal line at height y = 25. This is because the parabola is all points (x,y) where x*x = y, and the line is all points where y = 25, so the places where the line intersects the parabola are the points (x,y) where y = 25 and x*x = 25. -

Re:Ubuntu drive partition
Well it's pretty obvious - either that or you don't know how to read.
Check it out:

Here's another:

So obviously, you are making this up. Even the windows based installer offers you the option to resize and use freed space. -

Re:Answer: More cohesiveness?
>If you don't want to run it, no-ones going to make you. You get the choice, see ?
Yes, but we aren't talking about the choice between whether or not to run it, we're talking about once you've chosen to run Linux, how do you make the choice which flavor to run?
>I guess that would be why you ran Windows ?
No, like I said, I run Windows for games.
>Well, not a million. Just a handful, like Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/2000 Server/Xp Home/XP Pro
First, we aren't talking about legacy products. I'm sure in a hundred years there will be a hundred past versions of Windows. We're talking about the current offering. And for most home users there is really only ever one current Windows product being marketed. Today that is Vista home edition. Until recently, it was Windows XP home edition.
But all this is beside the point.

From the above image, there are currently over 100 different flavors of Linux to choose from. I don't know how many of these are legacy and how many are current, but there are at least 12 flavors that have been created in the last year or so. Ok, it's not a million, but it is far more than a handful, and far more difficult a choice than running down to Best Buy and picking up the latest version of Windows. -
Re:screenshot
Is there a reason your current screen shot isn't also displaying Firefox as the selected application?
The fact that Mozilla Firefox is missing on that list is a symptom of the problem. As you can see in this second screenshot, I can launch Firefox. Other programs on that list that cannot be uninstalled include OpenOffice.org, PHP, Quicktime, and others; but those programs are listed while Firefox is not. As you can see in the third screenshot, the earliest installation date shown is 22 June 2007; programs whose installation date is not shown cannot be uninstalled from the Control Panel, which suggests that whatever caused the problem happened before that date. Also, in the fourth screenshot you can see all items listed in registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Uninstall" -- I would expect to see more, given that I have installed more than 90 distinct applications on this computer. -

Ok, have a look at these two merged scheenshots. On the left hand side you can see the Uninstall button for "Mozilla Thunderbird (2.0.0.4)", installed four days ago. On the right hand side that same button is unavailable for "MySQL Tools 5.0". It's also unavailable for all apps that are missing info such as the installation date and size (that is, most of the apps on that list).

Nice pun.
I've found Cygwin and PuTTYcyg configured with Consolas 11pt gives a quite usable CLI on Windows. My favourite terminal emulator is definitely Terminal.app though. -

Perpetual motion has already been invented. Attach this device to a rotary and we have perpetual energy! http://img523.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fantigra

The Big Bang -is- The Big Crunch
How about this... the universe is collapsing on itself. As we speak. But it's also expanding. It just depends on your frame of reference.
To explain this in the easiest way I can, I'm going to have to move from the multidimensional to the more easily understood dimensions. Save you have a sphere.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2081/asphereft7.j pg
That sphere has a top, and a bottom. Assume that at the top of that sphere, water is formed. This water will want to flow down that sphere to the very bottom of that sphere. In the case of our simple world - due to gravity, and gravity wants those water droplets to flow ever-faster toward that bottom, etc... ignore this bit about gravity except for the ever-faster.. they accelerate.
Now let's say you slice this sphere into strips going from the top, to the bottom. Like fancy orange peels.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/928/aslicedsphe rejxd8.jpg
Now if you uncurl all those strips, and align them all together at the top, you get a sort of radial spokes system of peels. The more strips you made, the cleaner the result, but what it comes down to is this. The top point of the sphere is still a point. But the bottom point of the sphere is now no longer a point - it is part of a large circular shape in a disc.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6959/anunfolded spherexj8.jpg
So if we had the same water droplets going from the top of the sphere to the bottom of the sphere, in this new disc-shape projection, then from the frame of reference of the top point - the center of the disc - the drops of water would appear to be continually diverging and accelerating outward. The Big Bang.
But here's the kicker. If you uncurl the strips and align them all together at the bottom and repeat the same thing - then a bunch of scattered around water droplets would appear to be accelerating towards it, and converging. The Big Crunch.
Just a thought - probably not original, but I don't remember reading anything on the subject.. it's not one I'm too interested in :) Graphics whipped up in 3dsmax (yeah, sorry - no Blender experience!)
