Re:Apple, Schmapple..
Oh, I have no doubt there are PC-using mathematicians among the squares you call your friends. The unfortunate truth, however, is that such beige-thinking types are too rigidly bound by convention to ever amount to anything. Consider the common belief that Macs cost more than PCs. From the fact that you don't even stop to question this orthodoxy, we may infer that you're a PC-using dullard.
It's no coincidence that every Fields medalist, for at least the last twelve years, has been a real Mac user. Successful people tend to be more creative, whimsical, and attractive than you, and the rock stars of geekdom are no exception. -

Re:Responses from a Firefox developer
Just looked at it with FF 2.0. Looks fine.
Is that fine like the publisher intended the content to be displayed or fine like having a default stylesheet override the one linked from within the actual document?Mucked up config files
Config files have nothing to do with this, it appears to be a default for FF2. If the page didn't look like this, then it's being displayed with the wrong stylesheet. I can see the apologists trying to argue this one, don't bother unless you're also prepared to argue that all websites should be displayed with the default html stylesheet! -

Re:innovation?
Not a big deal for me, but a huge deal for the non techy types I set up with Firefox.
Speaking of non techy types.. I wonder how much Shaw was paid to send this spam. Or if we'll be seeing the Firefox version of that on Tuesday. -
Re:Not every switcher falls in love
Well, the Start menu is an absolute abortion, and always has been. It is a horrible and awkward way to open applications. You can fit a LOT of things on the dock, since it can be shrunk very small and magnified on mouse-over.
I don't see how it's an awkward way to open infrequently-used programs. For quick program shortcuts, you have the QuickLaunch, the desktop, your frequently-used apps in the left of the Start menu, and you can pin other apps there as well.
screenshotAnd it may just be a matter of preference, but I HATE having all the windows of an application classified as their own application. All it does is clutter everything up. Why do you think tabs are such a great idea? Not to mention Exposé, which handles navigation between windows perfectly.
I'd prefer every application to have the choice of using the taskbar or their own document switching interface. For example, Firefox could open everything in a new window if you wanted that, or use tabs like the default. But I definitely prefer text labels on apps/documents in the taskbar, rather than Apple's Mystery Meat navigation, combined with requiring an extra click to switch documents. The taskbar is further cluttered by having the system tray taking up a good chunk of the corner.
It's pretty handy actually, and not much space at all. It works very well for settings (mouse, volume, display, TV) and is also nice for apps that can be minimized to the tray (IM, WinAMP, iTunes). It takes up less space in that case than either the taskbar or the dock. I hate when people have unnecessary crap in there though, but that's their fault. As for the top of the screen, the Apple way is MUCH better than the Windows way. I hate having toolbars in the Windows themselves. It's just annoying. The top of the screen is the perfect place for them and it's very convenient to be uniform. And, for the record, I've never known anybody to use the top of the screen for their Windows taskbar.
From my experience using OS X, I hate it. If I have 2 applications or documents open, and I want to get to the other window's menubar, I have to click the window first, then click the menubar. That extra click that is unnecessary. BTW, having menubars within the window is also uniform. Plus, if the application doesn't need a menubar, it is possible to hide it, and reclaim that screen real estate. Or like my screenshot above for example, Firefox can put other widgets (address bar, back button, etc) on the same line as the menu bar, reclaiming more space.
To me, the dock is form-over-function, and for such a commonly-used feature, that's unacceptable. The taskbar, tray, menubar, and start menu are all much more configurable, while peforming all of the same functions, plus a few more than the dock. It's just more efficient. -
screenshot for all those who don't download demo
Screenshot of window here. You'll see it simply generates "soothing sounds" to wash over office chatter. Basically, the only way to get rid of chatter with this is by cranking up the speakers and letting rip the sound of waterfall.

I call bullshit.Slashdot article -very- misleading
The article describes this software in all respects to be a Noise-canceling program, which it is most definitely not. I downloaded Chatter Blocker demo, and was greeted with this window. This program may be for some people, but the article labels it as a completely different animal. And yes, it is a white noise (and other noise) generator

Re:Non-dubbed anime.
Are you assuming that the Japanese voice actors are that much better than the American ones?
Are you also assuming that the professional subtitle scripts are 100% accurate to the original Japanese meaning?
Furthermore, are you assuming that those subbed anime files on YouTube were translated and subbed by professional translators?
Remember, with animation, the "original" voice track is also a dub track. Just as there are...less-than-talented American voice actors, so there are less-than-skillful Japanese voice actors. And, fandubs vary wildly in quality (anyone recall the AnimeJunkies' mass naked child events fiasco?)
Japanese production companies want their products to be seen in the best light possible -- right of publicity and all, y'know. An amateur translation/subtitling job probably won't be good enough for that. -

Re:So what.Hi. I'm SkyFire360, I wrote that program. I'm the guy in the blue shirt.
Though we're the first lab to use the ECoG technology, even our resolution is too poor to accurately control things in more than two dimensions. A breakdown of the different resolutions of Brain-Computer-Interfacing is here. The problem with EEG is that the skull acts as a signal damper that disperses and blurs the electromagnetic waves created by the neurons. Though we can still detect the waves created, it becomes increasingly more difficult to discern what area of the brain created these waves, much less what neuron(s) did.
A breakdown of the different types of BCI currently being developed and researched:
- EEG - Electro-Encephalograph - Biggest advantage is that anyone can use it, as it can be worn like a helmet or a headband. Though because it is non-invasive, it has extremely poor resolution
- ECoG - Electro-Cortocography - Though it needs to be implanted inside the skull, it produces fairly good resolution. Also, because it only sits on top of the brain as opposed to inside gray matter, it has much less of a chance to form scar-tissue (though still greater than zero). Tough to get more than one dimension of control.
- Single Receptor - A microscopic electrode is placed directly in contact with a specific neuron or group of neurons. This allows researchers to directly measure the potential of one neuron firing. Of course, this requires the electrode to be implanted. This form of BCI is also very prone to scar-tissue buildup, causing the signal to become weaker and possibly lost as the body reacts to a foreign object in the brain.
- Light Reactive Imaging - Still very theoretical - A laser is trained on a single neuron and its reflectance is picked up by a separate sensor. When the neuron fires, the laser light pattern and wavelengths that are reflected change slightly. This allows researchers to monitor a single neuron while leaving the tissue "untouched", negating the issue of scar-tissue buildup. However, this technology is not able to penetrate the skull yet, as would be needed for external/non-invasive BCI
Though keep an eye out for us at BMES... we just found coding for direction and velocity, and it is scalar. :D Oh yeah, anyone have any questions? -

Re:Why this is news
I also have a Siberian, 2 of them in fact.
1. Have you seen a Siberian? The Siberian isn't just another body shape or fur pattern, it's something as big as your arm. It's a _huge_ cat. It's bigger than some dog breeds.
This is very true. Our first one is about 10 months old at this point, and she's already easily at least 10 pounds, almost all of it muscle.
(And legends have it that some are also actually able to function as a dog, because at that size it feels a lot less threatened by someone human sized. So it _can_ defend its territory from a human, if needed. I wouldn't know if it's myth or not, though.)
Well, it depends on the cat. Generally, both of ours are pretty fearless, to the point of running up to windows to actively investigate thunder and lightning during storms. However, they still share a deep hatred of the noise from our vacumn cleaner and a few other such loud noises.
I can say that even the 4-month old male Siberian we got still isn't afraid of much, despite being about 1/5 the size of his stepsister for the moment. The breeder we got them from also has Maine Coons, and one of her males is absolutely huge, probably almost 20 pounds - and I definately got the sense you describe...He had a very calm and relaxed aura of knowing he didn't have much reason to fear anything around him.
2. The Siberian isn't anywhere near allergen-free. In fact, no natural cat breed is, from moggie to lions and tigers. The Siberian does produce a lot less allergen, but for some people it's still too much. So producing cats with even less, would still be welcome news for a lot of people.
Also true. I'm very allergic to other cats, but ours don't bother me much at all. Whatever reaction they cause is vastly outweighed by my allergies to pollen and such. -

"For me that is a little worse. I tend to configure my editing windows as large as possible, by removing toolbars I don't use frequently and keeping only those buttons I do use, in every mode."
You can double click tab bar to hide ribbon and save space. Also there's a quick access toolbar in upper right corner, where you can put all your frequently used commands.

Face of Marx, Sphinx and the lion
I'm sure many of you are aware that if you mirror one side of the face you end up with the face of the Sphinx and the other will look like a lion's face. I've always wondered about this, but for years we only had low quality image. Now there's decent quality images of the face of Mars and with some manipulation with Gimp I've mirrored both sides of the face. http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/8384/faceonmar

Re:Too late.
Lol, drinkypoo, you and I are really going at it. I would have posted this earlier but my comment cap had reached its limit.
Here's a screenshot showing you how to do it. No negative margins, completely valid. In fact, the code is quite sleek and sexy. Very simple. And in CSS3, I think there's going to be even more options for doing things like this so the CSS won't have to emulate the behavior of a table cell. I forgot to put in a width attribute for the first div, but doing so won't change anything except for its width. I understand that CSS is not perfect, but you need to remember that it's quite new and is just starting to catch on for use with layout. We will see huge improvements with CSS3 and also much better support in browsers as it gains popularity.
The green div on the right will fill up the remaining space between the red div and the edge of the page, no matter how wide the red div is. Notice in the code how there are no funky margins or padding. The green div starts where the red div ends - no overlapping. If the picture is too small and you don't believe me because you can't tell what's going on in there, say so and I'll take another screenshot.
