I think too many people lack respect for Mr. Lucas. Honestly his movies aren't that bad. And in my opinion he really started something with the original Star wars...of course he could never do as well on later ones. But then again I don't think hardcore fans really gave him a chance. George was also involved with Indiana Jones, while he didn't direct he was responsible for the story which was a very good one. And last time I checked writing for film is still in the industry. I'm sad to see him go, I think he still has some good stuff to offer although maybe this move works better for him. In fact for those of you who only know Lucas by Starwars should broaden your horizons.

In the article, Mr. Lucas says that quantity is the future, and that this will be a revolution in the industry. I don't agree. This will actually be a devolution. Hollywood studios, in their "Golden Age" in the first half of the 20th century, used to pump out tons of films with really small budgets with many of them superb films. If they really want to see financial and artistic success, they will absolutely return to this production process, but this would require them to force actors back into the contract system, which to me, wouldn't be a bad thing. Unless Thomas Mapother IV ends up at my local cinema in fifteen different movies a month, in which case, it won't do a thing for the business...

Three movies too late.

Actually, I liked Episode II a lot. See my review. People thought Episode III was about Bush, but Episode II laid it all out more clearly a year before the Iraq war. Episode III was like a latter-day Bond movie -- a non-stop roller coaster formulaicly cobbled together from bits and pieces of all the previous movies -- temporarily sweet, but shallow. Even Episode I has value -- it has the best light sabre duels.

Everyone retires or downgrades their career. Most of us even change gears once or twice. Nothing to see, move along.

Yep... Raimi pretty much cut his teeth on Evil Dead... Raimi and Campbell were good friends growing up and pretty much started their careers with that movie. How do you know there's no FTL? Maybe with a bit more advanced physics and a lot more advanced engineering it could be done. Maybe someone did it a log time ago, and spacefaring imperialistic civilisations can use their prebuilt system, or maybe something like an Alcubierre drive can be built to allow them to travel anywhere. And maybe the aliens are at the conquistador stage and have some economic/religious justification for imperialism, just like the conquistadors did. Or maybe they're at the V phase where a military government has a bunch of ships left over from wars and needs a new enemy to justify it's monopoly on power. Hell, maybe they're something like the 21st Century US phase, where the military has a bunch of hardware, and needs new enemies to avoid funding cuts, and the politicians have some benign but impractical ideas about spreading their political system to the universe.

And in any case, imperialism is never rational for a whole society. But it may be rational for the individuals who get the state funds for the conquest, and a privileged place back home when it's complete.

But we're talking about aliens so making assumptions about their reaction to discovering a less advanced culture is dangerous. By definition, their culture is possibly very different to ours. Still, even if they are very like us, human history has many examples of less advanced cultures being obliterated by their first contact with more advanced ones.

Seems to me, sitting on a small planet and part of a relatively young and relatively enlightened civilisation, it's just not a very good idea to assume that you know anything about what's around in the rest of the universe. Or for that matter the rest of the planet.

How do you know there's no FTL? Maybe with a bit more advanced physics and a lot more advanced engineering it could be done. Maybe someone did it a log time ago, and spacefaring imperialistic civilisations can use their prebuilt system, or maybe something like an Alcubierre drive can be built to allow them to travel anywhere. And maybe the aliens are at the conquistador stage and have some economic/religious justification for imperialism, just like the conquistadors did. Or maybe they're at the V phase where a military government has a bunch of ships left over from wars and needs a new enemy to justify it's monopoly on power. Lets assume that the average time is 90 minutes, and that they are some how able to make all 36 movies that are already scheduled for three years into the future. That is 54 hours of viewing pleasure. There are also 52 weeks in a year, and assuming you saw 36 movies that would leave you with 16 weekends do what is really important, watch football. But you only get to watch the game or movies if you went to church before hand you sinner you. Now assuming you have a high paying computer job, and you "donate" to the church, and sack some away for the kids college fund and retirement. You hope that the movies are not more than $7.00 for "Adults", and because you have kids, you don't want them trying to get into R movies before their time, so you do not see the movies that are R rated, so you are limited to lets say 20 of the 36 titles they put out. And that is just fine by you because those other weekends can be used for the other things that matter Baseball, Basketball, and hunting. ((20 movies * $7.00) * 2 people in love hopefully married, and not gay) * million people = $280.00 million. But this will be 2009, so the price to cocaine and other drugs has gone up so you need to be pulling in at least three that ammount to keep everyone happy and passive, so you start making gay movies, and quality christan movies, and street movies so you can keep it real.
