Cockroach Documentary
There's a documentary out there which looks at the very advanced behavior and communication of a group of cockroachs in a New York city apartment. Their capacity for human like speech and their ability to work together to acomplish monumental feats is truly amazing.

His name was Andy Kaufman [IMDB], probably best known for his roles on SNL and Taxi.

Advent Children listing for those who want to click around and find out who these people are. Personally, I think it looks like a more or less good cast, and have high hoppes. Despite what the MPAA usually has to say about such things, I'll definitely be picking up this DVD to replace my download.

IMDBIMDB has the list up as well. For those of us at work who can't read about video games (grumbles for a while and goes back to work).
By the way, saw the movie in Japanese a while ago. It's amazing eye candy. Loved it.

This is TOTALLY different: Warming, not cooling!
And it is all Republicans fault. They are the ones driving big SUVs and killing babies with their secret plan to warm the planet, preparing Earth for takeover by our lizard-like alien overlords.

I know it is true, Charlie Sheen never lies and is totally rational. -
Re:Interesting...I agree, some of the bonus material is a little out there. I don't care about the theatrical trailer, I just watched the movie. But some movies have some pretty relevent material. It's actually fun. I believe my favorite would be The Incredibles. On the 2nd disc there was a short file (Jak Jak Attack) which was just as well done as the movie. There was also a large list of the other superheroes with interviews before they went into hiding. Much like the way the movie began (but only sound). Very interesting, and some were very cool (one of them is a drunk who starts yelling at people).
I'd say some of the other relevent material would include the outtakes like in Jackie Chan movies. On Ong-Bak there is a martial arts demo they did in France that is amazing to watch.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy did an amazing job with the extras because you didn't have to buy them. Yeah, it's more expensive to make a dual release of a movie, but there are a lot of people that just don't care about the extras, and would rather not pay for them.

Re:No, Copyright is Good!
not news here but...
it would be really hard to argue the benefits of copyrights over 10 years.
Unless you have the copyright lawyers to turn This into This and not pay anyone a dime.
but when it's your business model to manipulate and perpetuate copyright law, I guess you know what you're doing when 'scrounging' others works for good ideas. So this perpetual copyright helps ensure that the house of mouse is the only one that can continue to create and innovate freely, while everyone enlse is suceptable to being sued. -

Re:Quickest way to Jump the Shark
I can't think of any other animated TV shows that have been made into a movie, so I'd have to say it's about a 50/50 chance.
Yeah, it's never been done before...
Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996)
The Rugrats Movie (1998)
Pokémon: The First Movie (1999)
South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (1999)
HELLO??? Who the hell modded this up to +3 insightful??

Re:Here's my idea
But paying too little virtually guarantees that they will be worse.
I doubt that. Being a theater usher isn't exactly a booming career path these days. It attracts talent that would otherwise be saying "would you like fries with that?" If you've ever run a business, you know that (a) it's not possible to make these jobs high paying and (b) the quality you can afford is so low already that there's little to be lost by paying minimum wage.
If people would stop buying that crap (what, you can't go 2 hours without eating something?), then prices would come down.
No, a lot of other things would happen first. If people quit paying to go to the movies, the first thing that would happen is that all the indepedent theater chains would go out of business. If the trend continued, the small- and medium-sized chains would go out. If it kept on, the major chains would start to fold. Then -- and only then -- would it start to radically affect Hollywood to the point where it might get the message. A lot of people -- thousands nationwide -- would get hurt long before Hollywood ever started getting remotely discomfitted.
The theaters can't control the quality of the movies, but they do control what movies get how many screens for how long. Much of this is decided by popularity, so not going to bad movies would be a step in the right direction ("If the movie stinks, just don't go!"). However, the theaters sometimes do things that defy all profit - take Serenity for example. Theaters started dropping Serenity after two or three weeks, when it was making more money per screen than many movies with many more screens.
I saw Serenity and liked it so much I bought the DVD the instant it came out. You claim Serenity was pulling in more money per screen than any other. IMDB.com says Serenity cost about $40 million to make, yet pulled in only $25 million in theater sales during its 5 week run. By the end of the fifth week, revenue per week was down substantially. Admittedly the number of screens was down significantly as well, but the overall numbers would suggest Serenity was pulled from first-run theaters at about the right time. The early release of the DVD also factored into that equation, as theaters generally don't like carrying movies that have been released on DVD; it tends to radically kill ticket sales. Serenity will make back its money and then some via DVD sales, a trend that's becoming very common these days for anything that isn't a megablockbuster.
Maybe I'm just lucky, but most of the showings I've been to lately wouldn't have been affected by removing half of the seats. Except for something like Harry Potter on opening weekend, do theaters ever fill up?
Those times when the house is packed are the only times when the theater gets significantly ahead of the cost/profit curve. Seats can't be easily added and removed, meaning you have to design for your maximum capacity. Your point (that theaters rarely fill) is well taken, but the economics of the situation demand that theater owners pack their theater seats together like coach on an airline.
I would rather pay a slightly higher ticket price and not get ads beamed at me than pay for the advertising through product prices.
Then you are a significant minority. Most people would not rather pay higher prices, and theater chains that have tried this have seen people defect to other theaters. The ads are annoying to everyone, but the unwashed masses just don't seem to think it's annoying enough to pay an extra fifty cents or a dollar per ticket to get around them.
Advertising is a scam - who do you think pays for the ads? More ads equals more costs, more waste, and more annoyance.
The ads are paid for by the company advertising the product or service. You should've known that already. And obviously the company doing the advertising feels it's worthwhile because they're payin -

GNAA discovers Scientology's shocking roots in the associationDepakote (GNAP) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - A group of GNAA members were shocked to find that Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard was once indeed a bona fide gay nigger. "I am confident that Hubbard's theory of Dianetics leans more to the fag side", said GNAA Spokesperson Jmax. "After a long and arduous journey through the galaxy I am proud to finally see the Church of Scientology and Gay Nigger Association of America have joined forces to provide a better world."
The Church of Scientology first took it's interest in the GNAA after a surprise shift of disgruntled members after the decomposition of Terri Schaivo, many including GNAA leader timecop, now OT 13, has converted to Scientology. "I began scientology as a fat, gay, gook, and a coke addict; now thanks to purification run-down, my body is clear of thetans and impurity, allowing my seed to descend into a new generation of gay niggers".
About Church of Scientology:
The Church of Scientology was founded by known Science Fiction Writer L. Ron Hubbard and his theory of Dianetics. Dianetics is Modern Science of Mental Health, a patented method proving that psychiatry is indeed a plot by jews to control of the minds of all human beings. As of 2006 Scientology is now raking in over 3 Trillion dollars (.USD) a quarter, with over 15 million active followers world-wide, including GNAA members.

Re:Addiction?
Reminds me of this movie, a conservative fundamentalist view of "porn addiction" which was on Lifetime last year (that's right, I watched Lifetime... after I saw an ad for it I just knew it was an unintenional comedic masterpiece in the making). And it was pretty damn hilarious. The main character gets "addicted" to porn (and pr0n as shown on the Lifetime network consists of teenage girls dancing around in skimpy clothing), and his "addiction" makes him stay up all night watching it and drinking red bull (wtf), which means he doesn't get any sleep and becomes a poor student/athlete. He also leaves a burned CD labeled "Virgin Vaginas" in his drawer, which his little brother finds and it scars him for life. Those are only a few examples, you can check out the imdb comments for some other good ones.
Now, that's not to say that porn addiction is not possible, but there's definitely a realistic view of it, and a completely skewed conservative view like the above. -
Re:"Could care less"
I'd like to add my voice to the tiny minority chorus of people admonishing Americans for creating a catch phrase that says the exact opposite of what it's intended to mean. I'm sensitive to language issues, and reading this phrase bothers me in a way similar to that in which others are bothered by fingernails scratching on a blackboard.
If I ever find myself re-enacting Falling Down," it will be because of this or something like it.
Or is there more here than meets the eye? Are the Powers That Be just getting the sheep accustomed to hearing that black is white? -
Re:Fuller experience!!
Cinema is magic!! Nothing compares the mystical experience to that of TV. But Hollywood just keeps making films for 16 year-olds and the theaters have nothing to market exept how new the film is. What the industry should do is release entertaintment films for the purpose of being watched at home, while leaving cinematography for the cinephiles. Theater bussiness will shrink, but it will become healthier with dedicated audiences. Look at the "V for Vendetta" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/ Can it be watched at home? By all means no! The dark atmosphere of the film cannot be reroduced at home. It is like comparing masturbation to sex!!

Re:What is this susposed to imply?
Actually, from what I hear GTA is a great all-around game, and is much more than just a violence fest. Having not played it I can't really say. But I think a lot of people get a distaste for violence after 25 or so. I know I did. I can still stomach it fine -- I enjoyed Kill Bill, and even Hostel, but I don't seek the stuff out like I used to. So while I might enjoy GTA if I got into it, it's just not what I'm attracted to. I have a limited amount of time for gaming, and I'm far more inclined to try something with a less overtly violent tone, like Darwinia.
But to each their own. Enjoy what you like :)
Cheers. -

Bubble
I just watched Steven Soderbergh's Bubble, a movie released on cable TV, DVD and movie theater at the same time. It was a great experiment, shot for cheap on HD Video cameras, using unknown actors. (one major character just retired from being manager at the local KFC). For sets, they filmed inside the actors' real homes.
Ultimately the story works because the characters are great and the plot is interesting, but this was a great project and I highly recommend you guys check it out.

Hurray for Movie Technology!
With 3000 disks, it can shift 170Tb to 5000 rendernodes over 10GbE and 1GbE network links. It's an impressive system, for impressive films.
Unfortunately, all that storage can't provide decent acting, quality humor or plot lines without holes for their movies.
I bet I could make a graph that represents how the quality of movies is characteristically inversely proportionate to the amount of CGI effects in them. Oftentimes, eye candy is used to shroud the plot and mask the bad acting/directing. American audiences especially just go looking for explosion sequences and CGI in the annual summer action flick hunt. We often fear a movie that might prove to be too cerebral and that pretty much disgusts me. Way to reinforce bad movies that are only good for one viewing with volume set to 'loud' and TV set to 'huge.'
ILM is responsible for making movies like The Mask (of which there are seven films) and characters like Jar-Jar Binks possible. Be sure to thank them for that. -

Re:Visualisation is the only thing he's good at no
Padme is in her 20s during Episodes II and III, but that's just a technicality.
:P
I understand what you mean with the perception problem surrounding the characters. Unfortunately, I suspect actors did not understand the point about their characters that you just raised. Why? Because Lucas isn't an acting director. These people aren't paid to think--they're paid to act. Sad truth, I suppose.
I maintain my positon that the writing is mediocre. Not shitty, not offensive, just mediocre and a bit unpolished. Example: I think Padme, in her 20s, would be capable of better self-expression than shrieking "YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART!!!1!!1" like a middle schooler.
If you want awkward and embarrassing teenage romance that's more authentic than anything you'll find in Star Wars, you need to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. -

Yes, please do. You could go to one of the conferences NASA holds there, or to visit Altus Air Force Base, where a bunch of "dumb Okies" teach Air Force pilots how to fly their jets to protect your freedom to make stupid bigoted statements on Slashdot. Or maybe you could meet some of thost stupid backwoods morons like astronauts Dr. Shannon Lucid, William Pogue, Owen Garriott, or any of the many other astronauts from Oklahoma. Or former Ambassador to the UN Jean Kirkpatrick. Or visit the birthplace of Wiley Post, who among other things discovered the jet stream and invented the space suit. Or visit the spaceport.

Re:2084
I wish Orwell's 1984 was required to be taught and discussed to death in citizenship classes in high school. What most people don't seem to understand is that 1984 is not really about "big brother" but instead it foretells what Orwell deeply distrusted: a global information system and the abuse of it. In a way Orwell was a pessimist - he knew that no matter how well intentioned any system would be abused. UAV's are a symptom of Orwell's fears, they are just more information inputs into a global database. By themselves it's almost silly to complain about them but in aggregate with other databases the whole becomes dangerous to liberty. Everyone has broken some law somewhere and if that information is easily looked up it makes everyone susceptible to blackmail - who did you have an affair with last year? There was an old soviet joke about having laws against everything so if the KGB wanted you they would simply selectively enforce any law they wanted to against you. What citizens should demand to combat Orwell's dystopia is transparency in the process' and records of their government. Yes some things do need to be classified but they are usually the exception and not the rule. And no matter how classified everything should eventually become known. Anyway, I'm too drunk to continue so please correct and extend what I've said. Goodnight.
wow, am interested to see what you have to say when you are sober. ;) :) :)saw V for Vendetta yesternite, its made by the Wachowski brothers, and shows a terrorist's retaliation on a totalitarian government. i am glad hollywood releases such flicks, inspite of the extra meat, extra cheese they add to each of their dishes.

Far out, somebody really needs their humour detector checked. The comment was a fairly obvious reference to City Slickers . Nevertheless, it is foolish to regard these conflicts as over. Afghanistan (which is what was mentioned originally) is as messy as, if not messier than, Iraq. In Iraq, the current situation is not a continuing war - in Afghanistan the original war continues, although I am sure the sometimes subtle distinctions involved will be lost on you.

GNAA FPGNAA Announces OneNigger Suite of Collaborative Trolling Utilities
GNAA Announces OneNigger Suite of Collaborative Trolling UtilitiesMisha Borovsky (GNAP) Hollywood, Ca - At a star studded event which was attended by both Jamie Foxx and Denzel Washington, two of Hollywood's leading gay stars, GNAA president timecop and vice-president jesuitx unveiled the latest offering from the GNAA Software Division, GNAA OneNigger.
"OneNigger is a hosted collaboration groupware for taking a more proactive approach to trolling. By leveraging OneNigger services with industry trolling best-pratices, the lone gay nigger, or small gay nigger organization is empowered to think outside the box." stated timecop.
Added jesuitx, "Furthermore, in our focus group testing we were able to increase LastMeasure coverage by 36.4% among bloggers participating in large blogrolls. Using modules like the OneNigger Date shared calendaring system allows groups to pick times to touch base on important trolling issues of the day."
Other modules in the OneNigger Enterprise version include OneNigger Chizzat running on patented extensions to IRC, OneNigger Phone, which offers VoIP technologies with free toll-free access to the USA and Japan, and Gay Porn Avalanche Enterprise 2.0 (GPAE2), now newly integrated into the OneNigger platform. OneNigger requires Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 running on an Intel processor. AMD is not supported, as OneNigger is an enterprise-level software suite, and requires a powerful computer.
Later on at the after-party, GNAA member Depakote jacked off with this Microsoft OneCare CD, and consumed his seed, much to the squealing delight of Jaime Foxx.

Arthouse movie, Hollywood budget
I really don't understand why the 2002 Solaris movie was made (or, at least, why it was made with such a big budget). It is an arthouse movie with a Hollywood budget. While I appreciate it, I can't see how they ever thought they'd make their money back on this one.
Here's some box office data from IMDB. While it isn't too easy to interpret, it looks to me like it grossed well under its production cost (perhaps about 1/2 to 2/3.) The return to the movie makers will be a fraction of that. -
Re:Lucas doesn't like human actors
Yeah, I hav eheard that story too, and while He may hate actors, this doenst really change anything about the major stars in a Film. CG or not - the movements and voice are based off a character's movements, most the time it isnt just fabricated. King Kong and Gollum were based off the movements of Andy Serkis ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0785227/ )
