Re:It won't suck...It won't suck...it will blow, in six different ways
So, what your saying is that Vista goes from 'suck' to 'blow' just like Mega Maid?

Re:Putting my feet upI have not seen one compelling movie in the last 3 or 4 years so
Yup. "Return of the King" sure sucked. It'd really, really suck in HD on a 42" widescreen in my living room. uh-huh...
On the other hand ( um, yea, that was sarcasm up there ), I'll be waiting this out with you. I don't have enough money to waste on this crap. There is a PS3 in my future, but it's not this year, even if Sony does get it out before summer. Right now, this stuff is strictly for people looking for something to do with their extra stacks of money.

Sick of Astroturfing
Astroturfing is getting way too pervasive, take a look at the comments of people who LOVED "Date Movie" on IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0466342/usercomments?
f ilter=loveIf you look at most of the users who gave it 10, that's the only comment they made... so you'd have to believe that coming out of that movie, they were so overwhelmed that they ran home, and joined IMDB to rave about only that movie.
The next step of course, is to make your astroturfing seem more realistic... over time give your company's movies 10s and the competitors 2s or 3s, making it seem like you just prefer every 20th Century Fox film to every other film....
That'll be really annoying, I'm worried it'll destroy every credible review site.

Derived work, or not?I am free to make a movie about a car salesman in North Dakota who tries to kidnap his own wife for the ransom money from his rich father-in-law and whose plan goes south because of two stupid henchmen and a very persistent (and very pregnant) cop, as long as I don't use any film, music, lines, or titles from "Fargo".
Well, you're not quite completely free. And in the case you describe, since Fargo is still under copyright, you'd be giving your lawyer an uphill battle.
Now, if you want to start from a work no longer under copyright, and use that to base your movie on, your lawyer will have to put in a lot fewer billable hours. What he invoices may be another story, but that's between him, the FBI, and Grisham's copyright lawyer.
Frankly, I think White Wolf's case over Underworld was roughly the same caliber as this one for the DaVinci code, and WW were not-quite laughed out of court by the judge.

Are you smoking those plastic disks to get high?Um? 1.5GB is piddling compared the the 4 to 20 GB on a standard commercial release DVD-ROM, so your expectation of both a "full res" and "DivX" version (with a hope for "bonus features" to boot!) is most accurately characterized with, well, various rude words, noises, and gestures. A combo DVD/UMD player is also over optimistic; such multi-type players cost more to make, and ergo to sell, and rarely do well outside of the small high end prosumer market. As for a UMD burner, you've obviously not been paying attention to Sony's previous bit control attempts, or their struggle to lock down the firmware, or other recent activities.
If you use DVD-Shrink at maximum compression, reauthor to remove most of the alternate languages, menu chrome, and other bonus features, you can sometimes squeeze a regular release DVD down to a single 1.4GB 80mm DVD-R. Sometimes not, if the movie runs a little long, but OTOH it's usually quite practical if you're only taking a single TV episode from a collection that puts several on each retail disk.
Of course, one could use a different codec besides VOB/MPEG2... but that loses compatibility with many non-computer DVD players. And, of course, many codecs are covered by patents, which adds to the costs if you want to make a retail product, and there are definite trade offs with the video quality. But if the whole problem was easy, someone would have solved it by now.

mmm..GNAA Announces Full Cybermilitary Support of the German Government
Mikhail Borovsky (GNAP) - Moscow, Russia - GNAA President timecop and Vice-President jesuitx held a press conference live via satellite from GNAA US HQ in Tarzana, CA where they announced full cybermilitary support of the German government following the German injunction against Wikipedia.
This roughly translates as, "Dear friends and comrades, Wikipedia has been shut down as of January 17th, 2006 due to a court injunction by the government of Germany, due to extensive support by Wikipedia for the Jews and the state of Israel".
This type of support was made illegal in Germany in 1939 by the Berlin Pact, signed by Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin. Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany has announced that this injunction will not be lifted until Wikipedia stops supporting "Die Juden".
"We also feel this injunction came in due time, as Wikipedia is being overrun by articles pertaining to non-notable blogs with completely useless information (or "blogs"), which are also illegal in the Great Republic of Germany. We are pleased to receive the support of the Gay Niggers, as they have already declared war on the blogs, and know how to defeat this communist ideal before it can become a threat to freedom," said Mrs. Merkel.
About Germany
"Bundesrepublik Deutschland" was founded before the middle ages by the Visigoths. The government was non-notable per above until the late 1930's, when Germany underwent an extremely positive and successful cultural revolution. Today, Germany is a beacon for free economy and a land without Jews.

g ma/enigma12.htm:
"The British sailors climbed into the conning tower and began a search of the deserted submarine. The bookshelves still contained books of every description - navigation manuals, seamanship manuals, code books and signal books. The Bulldog's telegraphist pointed to an interesting piece of equipment that looked like a typewriter. This, along with all the books from the shelves, was transferred with utmost care to HMS Bulldog. It was important that everything was kept dry as the code books and signal books were printed in ink that disappeared if they were dropped in seawater.
On Bulldog's arrival back in Britain they were met by a representative from Bletchley Park, who photographed every page of every book. The 'interesting piece of equipment' turned out to be an Enigma machine, and the books contained the Enigma codes being used by the German navy." -
Re:It's a puppet film
Quick and simple: the original was an entirely live-action, puppeteered film. It's the only movie like it ever made, actually: the only all-puppet feature film with no humans or live animals present at all
Meet The Feebles was an all-puppet feature film too. -

Re:Froud is in... but Tartakovsky is too.
Sadly, it seems style over substance is what Henson's all about these days. Did you see Mirrormask? I read somewhere that Henson Co. is desperate for another Labyrinth. The movie flopped at the box office, but has been a consistent seller on DVD. It was supposed to be their Labyrinth "for the 21st century." But it was gawdawful. And I write that as a huge fan of Dave McKean's artwork. It was hard to sit through 2 hours of CGI romp with random magical plot and not much character development -- not to mention a soundtrack of smooth jazz. Ugh. Now it's time for the Dark Crystal.

same here, most of the films, music and games you find on the torrent network are either
1. paris hilton porn 2. not another teen movie 5 3. britney spears 4. mega maina mmorpg tm
or something like that, and being the type of person who prefers obscure films and music and i've already got a copy of #1. and i only have a ps1 and mostly only play doom, sim city 2000/3000 and transport tycoon on my pc.
so yeah, i do download a couple of gigs of torrents a week, but fortunatley i'm "forced" to pay for my favourite things
in other news i'm also a cinema buff and got ripped copies of each lord of the rings film to occupy me in between seeing it at the cinema and buying the boxed set of all 3, and because i'd seen each really big on a big big screen first i was happy to put up with the crapness in the mean time. (oh and i own bladerunner on laserdisc, niiice!)
and quite a few things i've downloaded i already own (generally mp3 copies of music i already own on vynil, or films i have on vhs). in fact i downloaded an albumn the other day i alrady actually haev on cd, but couldnt be bothered to dig it out of the gigantic box of cds that still largely hasnt been unpacked since we moved house last summer. all probably not fair use according to some laywers. -

Re:maybe games have reached a critical threshold..
Dude. Sounds like you're Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.
I'll go out on a small limb and predict that we will *never* have direct mind to game interfaces in the manner you describe. Directly manipulating the sensation of pain or level of endorphins? That's insane. Do you really want to play a game that would give you post-traumatic stress disorder?
Teaching children via mind-interface? Are you out of your mind? Our brains are extraordinarily complicated beings, capable of processing tons of information at once in a mechanism we aren't even close to understanding. Directly manipulating it would be like tuning a computer processor with a hammer. -
Re:king kong is not a failure
That's not what IMDB says (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0360717/business). Looks like it has barely broken even, neglecting marketing costs which are typically as much as the production itself.

Re:Kong sequels? Please god no!
I would love to see Daryl Hannah doing a similar role than in Kill Bill, but impersonating again the 50ft woman, this time vs King Kong. 3 Sequels in one, that should be great (or at least, gigantic).

Get cracking, Mr. Jackson! How can you go wrong with a game based on a movie that featured a puppet singing the following song?
You must think it very odd of me
But I enjoy the act of sodomy
You might call the wrath of God on me
But if you tried it then you might agree
That you enjoy the act of sodomy
Don't worry if you feel ashamed
It's been around for years
Thousands more than can be named
Are interested in rears
Don't worry about hell
No harm will come to your soul
We're not all Pentacostal
But everybody's got an asshole
Let me tell ya 'bout sodomy
You must think it very odd of me
But I enjoy the act of sodomy
You might call the wrath of God on me
But if you tried it then you might agree
That you enjoy the act of sodomy
It might just improve your sex
It's a hard act to follow
The fact that fundamentalists
Find difficult to swallow
So join me as I sing
Of an activity that's fun
Open up your ring
And try it front to bum
Bum-bum
Bum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum
Sodomy
You must think it very odd of me
But I enjoy the act of sodomy
You might call the wrath of God on me
But if you tried it then you might agree
That you enjoy the act of sodomy

The cat's *totally* out of the bag
Reminds me of what has lately become one of my favorite quotes from The Insider.
Movies released on DVD have been available in the internet in very good quality since DeCSS. And even before that professional pirates could make a bit-for-bit copy of any DVD that worked just like the original. One DVD player model that made it possible to circumvent DRM does not have any effect on international piratism. Not one fucking bit.
That cat's totally out of the bag. -
Re:They should try air freight.

Re:Sheesh
But even if your formula works for a long time, it's still not the TRUTH as an inherent property of the statement "Mars revovles around the Sun in x years", because a pesky little rock can put Mars out of its course in 200 years from now, and the formula can wear out and become wrong in x billions years because there's a small force which hasn't been included in the scientific law.
Ah, but then your statement isn't true, by my definition, because it doesn't reflect reality. Now, you might phrase your formula like so: "Mars revolves around the Sun every approximately X years, providing no major changes in the physical properties of the system," and you might be closer to finding the Platonic (if you will) truth. Whether or not you get there makes no difference - a great many scientific statements might be revealed to not be the final truth, but act as estimates to help us get there.
Even our knowledge of past events is submitted to distortions or potentialities making the truth less absolute than it seems ; think for a moment of sollipsism (theory that I'm the only being thing "dreaming" of a complete universe, this universe including you). You can't prove that sollipsism is absolutely wrong. You can't even prove to yourself that you're not trapped in that dream, and nothings really exists outside of me. Scary, huh ?
Not too scary - the thing about those theories is that while they may or may not be true, the consequences do not really influence the physical aspects of my life
:) Reminds me of Waking Life.My personal position is that we souldn't bother of what's outside the scope of our minds ; that means that as far as I'm concerned, everybody's entitled to dream his own future the way he likes (sticking to wichever belief suits him), and shouldn't interfere with my own vision by trying to force his down my throat.
I'm completely with you on that: you can never really force your belief on someone anyway, for everyone must ultimately make his/her own choice. However, the dreamer's dream will either occur or not, and you can't get away from that.
Religions attempt to address the question of our future ; if we're good, then we'll go to paradise and yadayada. But we can't look to that future from our place, so they may be absolutely true, or absolutely wrong, but that doesn't alleviate that fact that the future is neither true nor false, it just isn't yet.
Ah, but (as the Christians put it) "faith without works is dead." If your religion and beliefs do not influence your behavior, they have no purpose. If you believe that it is good to be intelligent, for example, yet you do not work towards gaining that intelligence, your belief has no purpose. Most religions (if not all) have behaviors that they advocate - the Golden Rule, for example, or giving to charity. Christ, for example, said that on two things were the laws of the Jews based: love God and love your neighbor. Now, these aren't statements, and so they have no truth value, but you might argue against the morality they define. The fact remains that they define behaviors that a Christian should attempt to adhere to. I'm sure there are equivalents in any other modern religion - defined explicitly in the holy literature or implicitly in the values they support. I guess my main response is purely that religions contain a great deal more than places to go when you die.
Yikes, it's something like 3 in the morning in Paris - get some sleep, email me if you want to talk about anything; I enjoy intelligent discussion
:) -

Re:Day after kid
Given the topic, he's probably referring to the made-for-TV movie The Day After , which was directed by Geek movie god, Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II). It was shown in 1983 on the ABC television network in the U.S. and showed what might happen in small-town Kansas after a nuclear holocaust.
My guess is that he was a kid when that movie first aired, which had a powerful impact on a lot of viewers back then, thus making him a "Day After" kid. -
Re:Fake video morons.
The POINT is that either someone doesn't want us to see it, or someone REALLY wants us to see it, and is raising awareness by telling us we CAN'T see it.
Remember the Oscar acceptance speech for "If you Love this Planet" ?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084118/
The film was banned in the US, so the filmakers thanked the US government for promoting it. -
Re:What's the point of posts like yours
Actually he has the right perspective and you don't.
The proscription against images of the prophet is one of the fundamental tenets of islamic religion. To muslims, pictures of the prophet are blasphemous. Having them insult the prophet on top of that is just adding insult to injury. Less inflammatory reflections on Jesus Christ have also stirred up widespread unrest. Or have you forgotten the great public outrage in the USA over The Last Temptation of Christ"?
The comparison of firebombing of abortion clinic and assassination of doctors is perfectly legitimate - both are done by a lunatic fringe encouraged by widespread discontent. So hold off on casting that first stone.
