Denis Leary, and some very funny comedians parody "Project Greenlight." The scripted story follows a "reality" show, where the actors are all comedy hopefuls are creating a new show for Comedy Central. Its incredibly funny, but generally I think people didn't quite get the fact that it was *not* a real show with real people. -

Re:actually, christian messaging is subjective thi
Sure, you could conceivably make a moving movie about some accountant from Denver being whipped to death for three bloody hours. But I find it hard to imagine it working. My point is that people found meaning in The Passion because it was about Jesus dying for them and for his and their belief. If you take that away it becomes a bondage flick. Which, of course, can be good and meaningful, but not in the same way.
Similarly, Narnia becomes yet another fantasy battle movie. Could be good, but it wouldn't be for the same reason as the original. -
Re:Mere Christianity
The books are certainly written as Christian allegory -- particularly the first, which is very messianic, and the last, which is essentially armageddon. The allegory doesn't quite track (one doesn't normally associate lions with Christ, for instance), but that's mainly due to the inherent limits of metaphor. Eventually you're going to run into a situation where you realize that no, the Internet isn't like a highway in this circumstance.
There's quite a bit of other stuff going on, though, so to dismiss -- or revere -- the story solely on its allegorical content is to miss quite a lot. Saying "It's Christian, so I don't want to read/watch it" is as silly as holding a prayer meeting during the previews, because it's not the entirety of the work.
As to C.S. Lewis, he had a long, complicated history with his religion. I recommend the play Shadowlands , or the movie made from it for an alternate view. -

Re:YOU Try It.
What you're saying doesn't make business sense. Once a studio makes a profit on something, it's not going to spend those profits on anything that's not likely to turn further profit.
Now, for an independant filmmaker, it might happen. Those guys are more interested in the art of filmmaking than the profit. But big-name IP tends to get licensed to the big-named studios with big budgets, big interest in profit--and little interest in art.
I'm not saying it's impossible...I just take issue with your suggestion that it would only take "a little bit of effort." Putting only "a little bit of effort" into the making of any movie will give you something like Plan 9 from Outer Space. A cult hit, sure. But not particularly well-done, and not even worth an indepentant filmmaker's time. -
Re:The problem with the movie
Remember when all those "funny" cop-buddy movies came out where one of the cops is a dog? (shudder)
Not only do I remember, but I remember when that genre reached its absolute lowest point. They replaced the dog with a gnome. That's right, a human/gnome buddy cop film!

Re:Have you ever missed meals or been hungry?
I'm guessing that you have seen Super Size Me.
Honestly, no I don't and wouldn't eat McDonalds every day. I did back in the day, because it was cheap and accessable. I was stuck with the fixed lunch break period, and needed food of some sort fast and cheap.
I am in relatively good shape. 12% body fat, and/or a BMI of 21. I felt that I should mention that, since virtually no one who would read this has ever seen me. I don't exercise as much as I want, but that's due to other reasons. -

YOU Try It.
You try taking a novel's complex plot, numerous complex characters, and subtle message and preserve it through the complex, expensive and draining movie-making process investing "the little time and energy it would take to do them right."
For a popular book, accomplishing that will net you a couple million viewers. Movies these days need to be watched by tens of millions of viewers to make a profit. You're not Gene Wilder, and the concept behind The Producers doesn't have many real-world implementations.
Like any other form of strong compression, moving a story from one medium to another results in data loss. The best movies are the ones written from scratch for the big screen. -

Re:? Making stuff up?
With that kind of doe, you'd like they could at least get the blue/green screening done properly. Quite honestly, I felt the effects in this film were very poorly done.
One more tidbit. It's interesting that on IMDB the first 20 pages of reviews are all very positive (and submitted before the offical release), yet 80% of the more recent ones (since Fridays US release) are all very poor.
I didn't see the film, didn't read the books, so I'm not here to defend. But I actually went to IMDB and looked at the user reviews, sorted by date, and they are mostly all positive.

Re:Happens in real life, too.
The clerk for the second store, after receiving my request, spoke into a walkie-talkie in his native language and then quoted me the same price. Now, perhaps it was coincidental, but both clerks appeared to be Indian. I didn't buy the VCR from either store.
Just a little bit racist, no? Just because someone speaks a foreign language, they're immeidately suspect? Isn't it possible that both dealers quoted you MSRP minux 10% or something to that effect? It's not extremely likely, but definitely not out of the realm of probability either.
Oh, and go use that new VCR to watch Crash while you're at it. -
Re:The orginal cartoon portrayal
So maybe they should not have cast an adult. (Maybe you thought Betty Bronson was a boy in Peter Pan, or that Chris Ackerman's tattoo's really came to life?) Films are just as big a fantasy as cartoons, it's just that the special effects are harder.

Hmm I think I need to listen to Deadbolt now... Deadbolt and Man or Astroman? should obviously both be major contributors to the soundtrack :) -

Re:Classic Slashdot link
Anyone who uses the phrase "jillions of volts of capacitance" obviously doesn't understand what's inside an LCD monitor, nor how dangerous it is.
Sounds like somebody wishes he was the one who made that comment first. Too late. The comment is out. He's already talked about all the jillions of volts of capacitance that live inside your monitor. You're going to have to talk about something else. Personally, I would have gone for the ultra-dangerous kabillion watt lightening vortex thats in the back of 'em.
There is really nothing dangerous in them, LCD's cathodes don't use more than 1kv, and unlike CRT's, there is no significant capacitor that will remain charged when the monitor is turned off.
Well, yeah, obviously. There's clearly no danger from the cathodes. Their capacitors are all tame. Its the doghodes you have to worry about. Their capacitors are easily excitable, and you have to wake them up just right or they end up escaping from your monitor. Those things'll live in your walls for years while slowly eroding the foundation of your house. The only way to get 'em then is highly toxic, massive bug bombs.
Obviously there would be some risk if you actually worked on the inverter while it was on, which isn't even dangerous if you are careful.
You've never worked with an inverter while its on, have you? It can totally suck you into a temporal vortex if you even look at it while its on. I would never even consider it except under the most dire circumstances.
And if you're that worried about the safety of cutting into a cold cathode, you could always use a shop vac to improvise a fume extraction system, in case you screw it up.
Too risky. You could get sucked up by the vac, and then how would you get out? You wouldn't. Then what good will the monitor be to you?
Or you could order a harder to find cold cathode that does not have the covering mentioned, or salvage one from a scanner.
Okay, that's just nonsense. Everybody knows that all a scanner can do is make people's heads explode. -

Re:Why No -NC-17?
Many storylines just can't be fitted into a G film. This tends to limit the amount of the "adults without children" crowd you're going to get. And they're the richest group. My point exactly. G-rated movies tend to sell exclusively to the "has children" segment and rarely will anyone else go near them with exceptions (e.g. Pixar, documentaries,
... David Lynch). This has a unique effect on the market in that parents will almost inevitably take their kids (and pay for it themselves), but the films don't command enough of a market share otherwise to make them fill out the roster so you'll typically only see one or two playing at any given time. No mainstream multiplex, however, is stupid enough not to be showing those one or two films. As for PG/PG-13 let me also amend my earlier statement. You also tend to get a great deal of broad-appeal films that they know is going to do well and that they can keep cut down enough to make it into PG/PG-13 (e.g. Bond movies, LOTR, Star Wars, event films). PG-13 seems to be heavily the realm of action-adventure (as opposed in this context to the more R-rated action genre) films, but brings in all sorts of other misfits. Still, while plenty of films would naturally end up with this rating, it's often quite obvious that many large studio productions are purposefully designed/forced into it in an effort to increase the potential market. As to whether R rated films make up the majority it partly depends on when you look at the releases and it partly depends on where you live (theater size and local chains). I can think of many times I've checked the current releases playing at a representative 12 or 20 screen theater nearby and well over half the films playing were R. There tends to be maybe 1 or 2 G rated films and usually a pretty even mix of PG/PG-13. This time of year and this particular release year tends to favor PG/PG-13 a bit more heavily. Part of the reason I find this interesting is because a great deal of important, relevant, artistic films are often rated R. Technically this means it should be restricted to those 17+, but in reality this is pretty ludicrous. Not only are most high school students likely to see say... The Matrix, but they would be cultural outcasts if they didn't! Part of this is the reason why the term "hard R" has come into being and part of it is the result of silly age limits. I mean, in the USA you can drive at 16 and in most states you're over the age of consent, but according to the MPAA and theater owners you're not to be allowed to see nudity in film (and if you're lucky enough to make use of being over the age of consent then well, why are you seeing so damn many movies and actually paying attention to what's on-screen?). I'll admit that in this I come from a biased viewpoint as my parents never screened films based on rating (I recall distinctly going to Black Rain when it was in theaters, at the time I would have been 8) and when I was into my teens and going to movies by myself would often buy me tickets if need be. Ironically I was carded at A History of Violence (rather good, not fantastic, but reccomended) a few months back and what with the beard, long hair, being in a college town and having an obviously early 20s girlfriend still had to prove that I'm 24. -
