History repeats itself. Just look at all the problems extreme governments with strong police state caused in the last century. Check what happened between 1939 - 1945.
Other day I watched Ike: Countdown to D-Day and one of the quotes is about fighting that war to give democracy a chance.

Re:These are not the rail guns you are looking forIncidentally, a fun game, if you're ever bored, is to imagine what would happen to the human body if one were to hold and fire a rail gun (even a wimpy one that shot at a mere 1,600m/s and not at "near the speed of light"), and the law of conservation of momentum actually worked. Really! Try at parties!
Yeah, but he is the Terminator! He is living flesh over a metal endoskeleton. That means he is heavy and strong enough to compensate for the kick on one of those rail-guns.

These are not the rail guns you are looking forTrue, the Z Machine is not a gun -- it's a giant magnetic field generator. I guess referring to a giant magnetic field generator as a "gun" works better from a journalistic prespective.
However -- rail guns are on the cusp of military viability. The University of Texas at Austin's Institute of Advanced Technology got 10 million dollars to develop viable rail guns. Just a month ago Janes reported that a prototype of the military rail gun had been tested, and that it was nearing viability.
UT-IAT has devised a common low-cost projectile concept for both naval surface-fire support and army non line-of-sight (NLOS) engagements using an EM gun launcher. It has a flight mass of 15 kg and contains either multiple kinetic-energy flechettes or a smaller number of sub penetrators made of tungsten. In its naval guise it has a muzzle energy of 64 MJ; a muzzle velocity of 2,500 m/s; a maximum range in excess of 500 km and an impact velocity of 1,600 m/s. From a more size-constrained land tactical platform it would be expected to have a muzzle energy of 20 MJ; a muzzle velocity of 1,400 m/s and an impact velocity of 700 m/s out to ranges in excess of 100 km.
That article really made me wish I had a Jane's subscription. Apparently, the limiting factor is the size of the capacitor -- if they can get this down than naval applications within a few years are plausible.Incidentally, a fun game, if you're ever bored, is to imagine what would happen to the human body if one were to hold and fire a rail gun (even a wimpy one that shot at a mere 1,600m/s and not at "near the speed of light"), and the law of conservation of momentum actually worked. Re:Einstein's brain was flawed, too...
We all come into this world with differing levels of gifts. It is what makes us so interesting.
How very
... PC. (I do agree that people are not born equal, but as for it making us so interesting, well, not so much. What generally makes us interesting is what happens after birth ...)And yet political correctness also suggests that we are all born equal. Quite the oxymoron
...A person without the genetic gift of increased intelligence may become more intelligent than the gifted person if they apply themselves and believe they can do it.
Generally, science has shown that the effects of `applying themselves' and `believing they can do it' on intelligence is relatively small, especially as one becomes an adult.
The American Heritage Dictionary uses this definition for intelligence: "The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge."
I suspected that you might try to define it. However, merely going to http://www.answers.com/intelligence comes up with several other definitions --
The faculty of thinking, reasoning, and acquiring and applying knowledge:
The general mental ability involved in calculating, reasoning, perceiving relationships and analogies, learning quickly, storing and retrieving information, using language fluently, classifying, generalizing, and adjusting to new situations.
The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge, especially toward a purposeful goal.
The ability to comprehend; to understand and profit from experience
Each one of these is subtly different. Yes, they're all related, but they're all different too. And how do you measure these things, in a way that gives an accurate result for everybody? It's not like you can have people just concentrate and measure it that way, like the aliens used the `brain boost machine' in Forbidden Planet.
Of course, you're right: the brain isn't a muscle, it is technically an organ. But, people often refer to it as a muscle because, like a muscle, they can develop it.
`Musclehead' is generally considered to be an insult. Discuss.
And just because people like to say `the brain is a muscle, it needs to be developed', that doesn't mean it develops like a muscle. I'm of a pretty average build, a bit round. I'm also pretty smart, though not a genius. I'm pretty sure that if I started seriously hitting the gym and running and such, in a six months I'd be `buff', with probably 2-3 times the strength and endurance that I have now. But if I started working on brain-puzzles non-stop, reading books, etc. for the same six months, I still wouldn't be a genius. In fact, I don't think my IQ would go up by any signifigant degree, though I might have a lot more knowledge and be a bit better at doing puzzles.
There is ample evidence of this. In fact, the evidence that we can develop our mental abilities is one of the founding reasons for our educational system.
You're mixing your terms. Mental abilities and IQ are not the same, though a person with a high IQ may have more mental abilities. Being able to list the dates that things happened, or being able to fix a car is a mental ability, but not a sign of high intelligence. Being able to find the pattern in a sequence of images is often a sign of high intelligence (and a mental ability(, though that ability will probably improve with practice. (But does that practice make you more intelligent? That has not been really determined.)
Also, it seems to have been shown that any benefits to intelligence caused by studying and thinking and such are much larger if done as a child. Once you become an adult, your IQ is generally fixed (though of course you can make it low
-
Re:Einstein's brain was flawed, too...
Seriously, these kind of things disturb me when I read them (what the quote said, not what the poster said). It implies that intelligence cannot be achieved through hard work, which is totally wrong.
For the record, this is not a well established fact. There have been several studies that show that IQ is mostly genetics (and this seems to be the general belief -- that it's mostly (or at least largely), but not completely, genetics), there have been studies that show that things like education and good nutrition as a child help it, that mental exercise helps build it, etc.The brain is like any other muscle and the brain bearer can develop it, just like any other muscle. They don't need a genetic defect to outdo Einstein, they need courage and the willingness to sweat to build it up.
Of course, what exactly IQ is is something that seems to change slightly depending on who you ask. And as others have said here, it's not easy to accurately measure, especially in a large group of people. In any event, the brain is pretty much obviously NOT like `any other muscle' (it's not even a muscle) and while I do believe that it can be developed to some degree, it certainly can't be developed quite like a muscle can. When people turn around and then say, "Well, you're smart because you're defective," then it diminishes both the person and the journey to become a more intelligent person.
Well, being rude is being rude. But just how many movies have been made about people who are handicapped in some way, end up overcoming that handicap and end up being the best at what they do? Lots. It's a story that people love to see, a story of people overcoming adversity. But it's generally just a story when somebody goes from having a low IQ (and I don't mean just poorly educated) to being a genius, like in Flowers for Algernon or Charly. But seriously, Einstein was just one man. Yes, he was a genius, but just one of many geniuses we've had over the years. I'm not sure how much we can learn just by looking at his brain in a pickle jar. And whatever this defect was, they missed it the first time -- I wonder if they (the people who look at his brain in the pickle jar) are just finding what they wanted to find?
It is still "politically correct" to belittle both intelligent and fat people in today's society too.
So what? I don't let what is PC dictate my actions. If you want to, that's fine, but I don't. (I do try and let courtesy dictate my actions, but that's different.)In any event, it's relatively scientifically established that fat people don't live as long. Is stating that or researching that politically incorrect?

GNAA 9/11 COMISSION REACHES STARTLING CONCLUSIONGNAA 9/11 COMISSION REACHES STARTLING CONCLUSION
On Monday, August 2nd 2004, the GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) 9/11 commission will release its report on the events of September 11th, 2001 and the utter, Rucas-esque failure of the government and GNAA's military to prevent, handle, or cover up the attack. In a press conference this morning, GNAA president timecop released the shocking conclusion of the report.
"lol, jews did wtc," said GNAA president timecop before spraying his viral Gaynigger seed all over a crowd of reporters.
This conclusion is in direct contradiction to the US Senate report that "lol sandniggers did wtc" that was released just a short time ago.
GNAA spokesnigger Penisbird held a press conference this morning where he was quoted as saying "It is obvious why the Senate 9/11 Commission failed it so badly: the presence of known Juden Joe Lieberman on the panel." This obvious conflict of interests went unreported by most major news sources because of the open anti-GNAA slant of almost every major organization.
Although the GNAA Commission still has more work to do, the apparent ringleader was Federal Reserve Chairjew Alan Greenspan. Greenspan has been quoted as saying that he supports a smaller economy in which he is the ultimate master. Destroying the WTC was just the first step in what appears to be a grand scheme to shrink the US economy to the size of his shriveled circumcised penis.
President timecop stated that he supports a strong dollar to keep gold jewelry (a staple of niggers) prices low.
Another conclusion of the panel was that the ops of #Politics played a pivotal role in the success of the attack. The usually miserly organization gave $2,000,000 to help fund the effort. They then continued with their unwavering aid to Jews by spreading false evidence that led others to believe that a bunch of sand niggers committed the attack. GNAA has promised a strong retaliation against #Politics.

Great! So, I did something positive today...
Beware, the first few minutes are weird.
> I love the minimalist approach, but not even being able to use a tripod seems like too much of a handicap to burden yourself with,
The idea of Dogma95 is/was to get back to the basic of film-making. By removing so much technique, you force the movie to focus on the story and the actors performance.
I'd say that, in a lot of modern movies, having no handicap and too much technology IS a distraction from film-making.
Now, there is a different idea behind Dogma95, it is that obstruction leads to creation (wich, of cours is Lars von Triers position, see Five Obstructions http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0354575). As an old time oulipo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oulipo) fanatic, I wholeheartly agree.

As said, I don't think so. -
Re:Ethnicity in comics? - A rebutal involving SW
And then you've got Darth Vader, the blackest brother in the galaxy.
In voice only.
Lucas hired James Earl Jones to be the voice of Darth Vader. If you've seen Episodes III to VI in the STAR WARS movie series, it is easy to see why: Jones' peformance in the films gives the vocal embodiment of pure villiany for the most (in)famous bad guy in movies ever created to date. Race had nothing to do with Lucas' casting decision. Though David Prowse was deeply annoyed to find out he would be dubbed in Episode IV, it didn't stop him from appearing as the body of Darth Vader in the two follow-up sequels, Episodes V and VI.
On a related note, I have seen a hilariously insightful move about race relations, perceptions, and prejudices if anyone openminded and mature enough is interested: The Gristle. -

MM is not a copyright
He's a trademark.
Each work that features MM is copyrighted. So, (under the grandparent's scheme) if "Steamboat Willie" wasn't bringing in the $$$, Disney could let it go to Public Domain, but still retain the copyright to Fantasia.
They would have to continuously review all the things in their vault and pay to keep them under copyright. Periodically, they would have to then "clean house" and enrich the public domain.
I would extend the scheme by allowing the copyright holder 14 years of payment-free use (besides the original filing fee), and then they have to start paying in year 15. The downside to all of this is the massive bureaucracy that would be required to keep track of the peak annual revenue for each copyrighted work. Granted, it will be somewhat offset by the revenue gained from the additional fees.
Contrast that with Lessig's idea that all copyright holders have to pay a $1 maintenance fee after 50 years.

GNAAGNAA Congratulates the Debian Project on the Release of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 "Sarge"
GNAA Congratulates the Debian Project on the Release of Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 "Sarge"BATON ROUGE, LA - June 6, 2005 - The Gay Nigger Association of America extended today its congratulations to the Debian Project regarding its 8th consecutive release of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. The latest incarnation of Debian, codenamed "Sarge", had been eagerly anticipated for approximately 6,000 years by both unwashed GNU/Hippies and fizzlebearded Open Source aficionados alike. So far the reception of "Sarge" has ranged from indifferent to uninterested, but the release has managed to draw the attention of many fundamentalist Christians, who have long seen the release of a new version of Debian as one of the major signs of the apocalypse.
"Sarge" is notable for greatly expanding upon the Debian policy of creating distributions that are obsolete before they are even released - a practice which, while not particularly desirable, has been enthusiastically received by nostalgic collectors of outdated open source software, as well as the National Association for Marketing Buggy Linux Applications, or NAMBLA. Debian project leader Branden Robinson defended the policy, however, in an impromptu GNAA interview which was conducted at his home. When asked to comment on Debian's slow adoption of new software, he was quoted as saying, "Look, the fact is that the open source development model is so ineffective that just as many new bugs are probably created in each release as old ones are fixed, so it all evens out. Right? Um - please stop touching my leg. No I'm not homophobic, I just - hey, I said cut it out! No, stop! I'm saving myself for Bruce Perens! HELP!"

They already found the layer of ice that can create all of the oxygen you need to live on Mars. You know, the aliens created the nuclear reactor that melts the ice (which creates the oxygen). Arnie already got it running for a while (back in 1990). He used the alias Douglas Quaid (Merlina helped him). He even had to steal a Johnnycab to do it!!! Whatever they used in the Abyss, it was most likely not water, as the sequence with the mouse breathing was not CGI. And water in your lungs is bad!
But, there do exist some breathing fluids, that among other things are being used on prematurely born babies, before their lungs are fully developed. AFAIK, using them for diving is still science fiction. You can read more about it here

The Abyss
Is anybody else reminded of http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096754/ Abyss? In the movie they added more oxygen to a water supply inside the helmet and you had to actaully breath the water inside your suit!

Re:Thoughts on virtual thoughts
Actually, I thought of this movie, wherein a time machine is created using (apparently) only a small airplane and an old microcomputer (Apple II, C64 or something similar). We learn the key to time travel can be stored on 7 5-1/4" floppies.

Re:Oh Bullshit. The best system I've experienced is here in the UK.
Games are treated as an artistic medium and tied to the same ratings board as movies. Games with 18+ labels require a proof of age to be sold if you look under 21.
Today, video games are just what PnP RPGs were twenty years ago. A significant portion of society thought that it led to otherwise normal teenagers committing suicide. Lectures were given, with enlightened defenders arguing against ignorant moral activists looking for the next product of societal change to oppose. Not unlike the 'debate' that is going on right now. The worst it got was when the 'activists released a biased TV movie called Mazes and Monsters (starring a young Tom Hanks).
Of course, all this ended when a few "inspired" reporters tried sitting down to actual D&D session. It must have pretty disappointing to only find a bunch of nerdy teenagers sitting around a table rolling dice and drinking Mountain Dew.
Inevitably, a significant lack of knowledge leads to disingenuous accusations of moral decay. Just like every generation believes that they invented sex, they believe that their progeny is iniquitous.

Sci-fi flick from 1964 had this right!
Damn, who could have guessed that the most laughable concept from "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" -- the hero breaks Martian rocks apart to get breathable air -- is practically true?

Course, the reality is, the real rocks are gonna smell like cow manure.
I'll pass, thanks. -

Re:So what?
But is he a really poor voice actor?
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0921942/
You evidently didn't listen to the interview. His point is that people like Jim Carrey, Vin Diesel, and Elijah Wood *are* really poor voice actors, only hired for their name recognition.
Not every brand-name screen actor does crappy work at voice acting, mind you - Billy Crystal and Eddie Murphy were cited by West in the interview as having real talent. But by and large, quality work isn't the concern when Hollywood hires voice actors, and that trend seems to be infecting the game community as well.
Ever play System Shock 2 or the Thief series? Fantastic voice acting (mostly) in those games, and none of those people did voice acting as a career. In fact, many of them were just people on the development team.
Ever watch recent anime titles (the ones on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim are the best example here)? Dubs have gone from superbly crappy (as they were in the late 80s and early 90s) to, quite simply, superb. None of these new, talented people are brand-name actors that would be recognized outside the cartoon voice-over community (and sometimes, they have to use stage names to take non-union jobs), but they also do great work in video/computer games.
Everybody making the high-up money decisions seems to think that having a star-studded GTA-esque voice cast is important. But people have been doing talented voice-over work for years. It's only now that the brand-name actors are moving in on their turf that AFTRA/SAG wants to get involved, and not to protect the talented voice actors who are heard-yet-unheard-of.
