Fight Club
Remember how cool those collapsing credit card company buildings looked at the end of Fight Club? Well, the personal info copyright violators have flipped the script on us. They're profiting mightily, while trashing our identities. Time to fight the power.

Soul MusicI'm surprised that no one has mentioned the earlier Discworld effort. the animated Soul Music. Does 7 episodes at 25 minutes each count as "full length"? It was fun, although I'm afraid my imagination skewed a few things a little differently (Death playing electric guitar looked a lot cooler in my mind's eye).
In perusing IMDB, I found that there's also Wyrd Sisters and Welcome to Discworld. Haven't seen either, although the later is supposed to be on my Soul Music DVD.

Re:Adding the "books that should be movies" subthrNeal Stephenson's SnowCrash would be an Awesome film.
If done right (from your perspective) yes.
The problem with movies is that they leave very little to the imagination. Filter a good written story through a film and all you are left with is the movie
Films which I wish I had never seen include Millennium (from a fantastic short story by John Varley) and (Gibson)

Re:Speak Up, People!
I stand corrected.
However, I think you are overestimating Bochco's clout at that point in time. Sure he had hit series Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law under his belt. But he also was responsible for Cop Rock.( I'm sorry if you have intentionally tried to forget this series, and I maladroitly have refreshed your memory. I never saw it, as during it's very short time on TV, I had no TV set.) -
Re:Speak Up, People!NYPD Blue was the first prime time show to incorporate hand held in a major way (IIRC).
Nope. Hill Street Blues usually gets that title. Of course, it's still Steven Bochco, just twelve years earlier.
Per IMDB, the original plan was to do the entire thing in hand-held (and black-and-white). I imagine Bochco lost a few rounds with the network, and thus we got the partially hand-held, completely color version. By the time he did NYPD Blue, he had so much clout he could've had it done in pig latin

Re:Speak Up, People!
You haven't seen much documentary. I don't think that wildebeests fucking on Animal Planet counts.
As the guy in the post above said, motion picture cameras were very bulky and heavy (and still can be). In the 1950s, André Coutant invented the Eclair camerette, a small 16 mm camera that was possible to use hand held for extended periods. This gave birth to what is known as Cinema Verité by the late 50s.
My favorite practitioners of this style is the Maysles Brothers, Albert and David. It would certainly be worth your while to try and find some examples of their work, such as Primary which was lensed by Albert.
Since that time, mainstream filmmakers have adapted various aspects of this style into their film vocabulary. Eventually it's made it's way into TV. NYPD Blue was the first prime time show to incorporate hand held in a major way (IIRC) and at the time there were complaints that it was distracting.
Now, more than 10 years after NYPD Blue's first use of an already 40 year old style, I think most knowledgeable people would agree that it's an accepted part of film vocabulary.
The shaky camera in BWP is only "documentary style" or cinema verité in the loosest sense. The shaky camera would more correctly be called "First Year Film Student Style", as the whole purpose of that trope was to convince you that you were watching raw footage shot by students. (I hope I'm not spoiling this for anyone. Oh, yeah, in The Crying Game, the chick is really a guy. Ooops!)
If you physically have problems with the shooting style in Battlestar Galactica, I suggest you take some dramamine before watching. Seriously. -

Re:Doesn't make sense!
Actually, yes, yes it is. What part of "copyright" means "nyah nyah you can't have this"? If copyright is going to be continually extended forever, then I'm going to have to demand compulsory licensing of copyrighted materials with boilerplate RAND fees.
Imagine what would happen if the copyright holder of Happy Birthday just woke up one day and forbid anyone from singing it again? What if every rock band demanded that people stop playing covers of their songs? Fortunately the public's access to music is protected from asshat creators by compulsory radio licensing via ASCAP, BMI, and even the RIAA, but books and TV and movies are not. An entire generation grew up in the 40 years between the time Bambi was last released in theatres (in 1947) and the time it was first released to VHS. I wonder what those parents told their kids in that time? "I'm sorry, you can't see Bambi because its owned by an asshat company that controls who gets to see it with an iron fist, and they decided you're not worthy. Maybe with luck you'll be able to see it with your kids when they've grown up!" -

Re:Surreal watching Caprica downtown...
I love the blooper moment in Blown Away : a long tracking helicopter shot over a gov't building in Boston flying a honking big Canadian flag. Hello Ottawa!
-
Re:Surreal watching Caprica downtown...Actually me and my friends (we're all refugees from Vancouver/White Rock) all think that this might be saying something -- I'd say 'significant', but that would be extraordinarily pretentious
;) -- about the visions of the future that Vancouver might represent.Think about it: on account of its rainy climate and unique location in a basin surrounded by mountains, the city has a wealth of incredible places to show alt.takes on reality. I mean, which shows were/are filmed there? X-Files, Smallville, MacGyver
... and now BSG. And that is not to mention all the commercials. I heard sometime ago that a good 70-80% of all ads in N. America are filmed there. And there is a Peugeot ad playing now here in London where they feature the Harbour Centre quite prominently. Then again, I've felt for a long time that the best film to show off Vancouver was Cousins, so what do I know, eh? My favourite telly shot was a shot in the first season of the X-Files where Mulder and Scully are supposedly going into the CIA. The building is the Burnaby Public Library
... I think I had to love the show even with all the wooden acting, just on that basis ...Oh, sod it, I do sound pretentious! Love that BSG, though; best sci-fi I've seen in years!

Woah, Man!
Jurassic Park in a Petri Dish! Be careful with reviving microbes from other planets. They've made about 2 dozen horror flicks about this sort of thing going horribly awry. It might be worth it though if they grow up to look as hot as the chick from "Species."

GNAA j00Niggersoft Announces GNAA/Hard
Niggersoft Announces GNAA/HardMisha Borovsky (AP) Moscow, Soviet Russia - Niggersoft chairman and CEO jesuitx today announced the private beta test of the first operating system suited towards the needs of today's gay niggers, GNAA/Hard. The OS is intended to grow at a faster rate of development and use, and be based on famous Marxist Richard Stallman's OS, GNU/Hurd.
"Hard represents so much in the OS world", said GNAA President and Niggersoft Board-member timecop." Our private beta now loads the system BIOS, then displays "Hello World" in rainbow colors. Our codebase at this point is now roughly 500% more mature than GNU/Hurd."
When asked why he felt a microkernel was the best choice for the future of the OS, GNAA ohsix simply stated, "no u r". It is the belief of this journalist that ohsix was trying to point out the major flaws of pure monolithic kernel structure, as seen in Operating Systems like Linux, which are known for poor security and an utter lack of intuitive use or overall quality.
GNAA member JacksonBrown told reporters, "Hard is going to be the best OS available by Q2 2014. Unfortunately, we are not planning a public beta until Summer of 2010, as our purely microkernel based structure will require around 30 Gibibytes of RAM to run the base servers and daemons. However, if Moore's law continues to apply, any Alienware based system will do."
It is rumored that Hard received it's name due to the similarity to GNU/Hurd, and to represent the rigidity of the massive niggers' cocks that are developing the OS.

Re:Nintendo is not for Sale
Yeah, Konami has done so too. But seriously, in the examples you've given, Nintendo didn't produce them so much as sell the rights to them. (Well, except in the case of the Wizard which was basically a Nintendo commerical.)
Square is completely responsible on their own for the massive suckage that is the Final Fantasy movie. -

Luckily Nintendo didn't lose their shirts on the Wizard or this abomination called Super Mario Bros. Sadly, making a bad movie from a video game isn't confined just to Square.

Comparison.IMDB is only so good. Lots of background trivia about actors, the films, and sometimes lists of notable quotes, but It's less sterling when it comes to surfing for comments. Google tosses up a handful right away. Here's and example of one film I'd like to get my money back on: Cat In The Hat
What I'd like to know is how people can actually give this film more than 2 stars. Beautiful sets but the film is mostly garbage.
On IMDB you can see the 3.2/10 rating but have to click on the links to see the spread and more than just one viewers comments.

Re:Hmm
What makes this different from Rotten Tomatoes? And I am genuinely asking this question, not being a horrible sarcastic person.
The difference is that Rotten Tomatoes has a confusing, graphics-heavy, vomit-colored home page, whereas Google is sparse, utilitarian, and fast.
Maybe some people like confusing, graphics-heavy, vomit-colored pages. There seem to be a lot of them (at least the confusing, graphics-heavy bit). I've always liked Google for it's simplicity. That and the fact that it works.
Just for kicks, I tried to find one of my favorite films, Year of the Devil (Rok Dabla) on Rotton Tomatoes. Didn't find a thing.
Google told me more than I could ever want to know about the film, the actors, the studio that made it, the cinemas and times that the film was playing, where to buy the DVD, etc. Everything except where to find an
.srt with English subtitles. -
Still needs work
-
Rotten Tomatoes plusThe valid comparison isn't so much IMDB as it is Rotten Tomatoes, which also compiles reviews for movies. However, with the google version, you don't even have to know the name of the movie:
"val kilmer popcorn" brings up Real Genius
"mike and the bots" brings up MST3k - as the second hit (apparently The Phantom was crying out to be MSTed)Of course, Rotten Tomatoes picks an exemplary or pithy line from the review to quote, whereas google simply takes the first line of the review, or the line containing your search term. The convenience of having it built into google is seductive, though.
-
IMDb rocks
It will not beat IMDb. Maybe Google will try to buy it soon and turn it into GMDb (Google Movie Database).
