Convicted?
Kevin was held in prison for about 5 years the second time around on bogus charges. It never went to trial, he was merely incarcerated. The white equivalent of Brown Equals Terrorist.
Tragically, he finally gave up and pleaded no contest to the charges so he could be allowed to leave the prison and return to society. Go watch Freedom Downtime if you want to understand what Kevin was truly up against. -

Wow these movies are just getting worse and worse... -
Good lord
This Smithee guy must be a genius
... IMDB states he directed his first movie the year he was born and has been writing, directing, producing, composing, designing and editing many dozens if not hundreds of shows since. Now he's a keynote-quality software designer.
Good show old chap! -
Re:Hidalgo's ultimate goal...
Reminds me of the plot of the comedy "Spies Like Us", in which American secret agents are sent to the Soviet Union to initiate a nuclear missile strike on the United States, in order to test the U.S. missile defenses.
-
Re:Is there a new Alan Smithee?Well, according to Alan Smithee's bio:
The DGA decided that the name got so much exposure from the film Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn, An (1997) that it was no longer an effective alias; the film Supernova (2000/I) was the first "post-Smithee" film.

Re:There WAS a movie made about Gerald Bull

As always, Rolloffle was unavailable for comment, as he is a British douchebag.

Richard Bach has 12 books, only one in movie (and way weaker than the book, as usual). Do you think I should wait? I don't think so...

Global coverage
Across the OECD's 30 industrialized member countries, music accounted for 48.6 percent of files shared online, compared with 62.5 percent in 2002, according to excerpts of the report seen by The Associated Press.
Interesting. I wonder if the fact that Hollywood tends to distribute movies in the US first--coupled with the storm of global entertainment coverage--contributes to this? If I lived in Germany, for example, awaiting the release of Spider-Man 2 I might want to see what all the hype was about and download the movie. -
A quote from STVIA quote from STVI seems applicable to the idea of STXI:
Let us redefine progress to mean that just because we can do a thing, it does not necessarily mean we must do that thing.

Culture Clubbed to death
Your sig has scarred my fragile little mind.
(Your Sig: ) Karma: Chameleon (Mostly due to the fact that you come and go.)
Huh?! It doesn't even begin to compare with your sig. People have gone through therapy to forget that foul piece of anodyne 80s synth-reggae-pop foulness.
My God, I want to tie you up, force your ears open with matches and play Spandau Ballet's "True" non-stop until you crack- just to see how you like it. -
Seeing Romulans
In the movie Enemy Mine -- as strange as it was -- I think humans never saw the Drac before, only their spacecraft as they attacked. Could they use the same reasoning?

As a self-appointed representative of ...password harvesters from Russia, I'd like to dispute the negative impressions of our actions promulgated on sites like this.
Are we phishing for passwords? Yes. Are we preying on the gullibility of millions of computer users? Yes. Are we using the information that we're receiving to access as much cash/credit from the end-users as is possible, probably ruinging their credit and their lives? Yes.
But we're doing it all to fight terrorism. Didn't anybody watch our recruitment movie, Swordfish? We're the good guys. Now give us your passwords and leave us to fight the good fight.

This was done a long time before Mr. Niven wrote about it: The Man In The White Suit, starring Alec Guinness (NOT Sir Alec Guinness - that should clue you in to how long ago the movie was made.)

Twelve MonkeysA Harvard genetics professor says...
Looking at the picture of Prof. George Church -- the aforementioned Harvard geneticist, one is struck by the resemblance with the guy Terry Gilliam cast as the "environmentalist" genetic engineer synthesized a pathogen to kill all humans in The Twelve Monkeys.
George Church is probably one of the least likely geneticists to hop on a world-wide jet tour to deliver a misanthropic virus he's synthesized.
The problem with all this isn't so much the creation of new, deadly pandemics -- nature does a good enough job of that. The real problem is the way amplification of international transport has been behind almost every major pandemic from the Plague which followed on the heels of the Mongol Empire's wide stretch -- to the pandemic of the first World War.
Globalization has already given us the AIDS epidemic and the SARS scare. It may have given us autism's recent explosive growth and a lot more we don't even know about.
No one is being held liable for this increased risk imposed on an unaware population -- this despite the fact even identifiable corporations have externalized the costs of their risk-taking on the public and walked away with higher corporate profits as a result. Not even Ralph Nader has guts to touch this.

Re:End of the Universe
What's really important, though, is how many Starbucks he has seen across the street from another Starbucks.
This happened to me in Columbus, Ohio a few years back. It sufficiently freaked me out that I was numb for the rest of the day.
I think it is akin to the dream of seeing yourself of the street and your brain becomes overloaded, "how can I be here if I'm there". A primal urge crept into my skull suggesting that I had to destroy the other in order to assert my existence. It was all very Solaris (the movie, not the OS).

Quiz Show?
Did anyone else think of Quiz Show when they saw this guy on the air for the first time? Quiz Show is a bout a game show that was rigged to ensure winners which boosted ratings were on the air for a long period of time... food for thought.

Having kids does that to a man...
Did you notice that RotJ was being made right at the same time Lucas and his soon-to-run-of-with-another-man wife adopted a kid? I don't think an explanation of the replacement of Wookies with Ewoks needs to go much farther than that.
Having kids changes your perspective something massive, I suspect. Did you notice how Greedo's blasting was taken out of the original SW in the remakes? How stormtroopers (real people in suits) were replaced with morally easier to kill robots in the new stories? He's gone soft, and the turning point seems to be the time of his first child and divorce. Coincidence? Perhaps -- I don't know the man. But it seems unlikely.
Hopefully with the remake of this apparently fairly hard-core movie, he'll regain his edge, and maybe remake these last three, well, first three, well, most recently released Star Wars movies.
(And hey, don't slam a guy for copying. Every great author's done it as certainly as every one of my apps has a copy of paste of Hello, World in it to thank somewhere. Isn't that part of the reason /.ers as a whole dislike current copyright laws?) -
Re:Jeopardy hub-bub
On one show, Alex joked about a movie being amde about the whole thing. He said he would have Charlize Theron play the role of Ken Jennings. "Wrong gender, I know, but I wouldn't mind being on the same set as Charlize."

Follow the imdb link in the story : it's a movie Lucas made in 1971 which is about an over-protective future society.
now, thx1138 himself is the hero of this story, now, "be happy" ;) -
Re:Job Interview? The actor is Mark Austin, not Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in the prequels.
The correct spelling is 'Boba Fett', not 'Bobba Fett'.

Re:Coaching? The movie is Quiz Show. Good movie. That scandal basically killed large-money game shows until Millionaire.
Of course, Millionaire faced some of the same criticizm that 21 did. And now that Jeopardy has lifed the 5-game limit, I have a feeling that the same will happen here.
In the end, you have to remember: it's television, not reality. I assume *everything* on TV has been manipulated for my "benefit"...
-
Re:Coaching?
You're thinking of Quiz Show.
-
Reminds me of "Quiz Show"
Anybody seen Quiz Show? To increase viewer numbers, champions regularly stayed on a show for 20+ weeks. How they did it? Participants got the questions in advance and it was all just a big show... And no, this isn't fiction, it really happened - in the 1950...
Should make everyone wonder whether the network has really found a great candidate or just decided to increase viewer numbers again with a similar plot... -
Re:Can you get away with cheating in Jeopardy?
I think you're thinking of "Who wants to be a millionaire?" There was a documentary about it called Millionaire: A Major Fraud.

Re:I think I speak for everyone when I say...
Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet had an intermission. It was 242 minutes long. That's the most recent one that I remember.

Re:1980 Volkswagen?
I'm picturing the solar-powered van from an old favorite of my childhood. Of course, Szalinski probably didn't think to charge up batteries for cloudy days.
