Wouldn't it be cool if our govt worked with Apple, Sony or MS and developed a standard residental power protocol that had similar features of IEEE1394 that you could plug into and get 12 volts && data transport??

If it was done correctly, your computer could have 1 cable attached and play to your stereo or TV.. Your TV could display your email. You would use waay less power because everything could go through a single transformer. You would have a lower risk of fire, and 99% fewer cords and cables tangled up everywhere.

I feel a little like that guy in Brazil but instead tubes I have wires everywhere.

France is in a power play right now and are using the UN/EU/NATO to achieve its goals. It wants to try and regain some of the its past power. The results of this have been to use their power in those orginizations to rebut much of what the US has been trying to do.

But even before that France and America haven't always gotten along. To them we're crazy gun-toting uncultured right wing Christian criminals (even though our gun related crime has been decreasing and theirs has been increasing greatly due to a huge, uncontrollable black market for guns in Europe, flooding in from Eastern Europre). To Americans the French are snobby, elitist, socialist, and godless people who are morally bankrupt.

I finally saw this the other day and enjoyed it. talking to a colleague about it the next morning we decided that it could have a fairly decent spin-off tv series. Each week a scientist gets an envelope in the mail containing items he needs to get through that week's adventures.

Didn't they do this already?

Seriously, the biggest problem I had with "Paycheck" was that I just never really believed Affleck was this super-intelligent guy. Uma Thurman was a little more convincing, but not much.

But you should know by now that mainstream Hollywood will never let a scientist (engineer, general nerd, etc.) be an intrinsic "good guy". In Paycheck, Affleck was a Dr. Frankenstein, battling his own creation.

In War Games, Matthew Broderick started the whole incident with his hacking, again having to fix his own mistake.

"Short Curcuit". Guttenberg's scientist has to battle his own creations to keep "number 5" alive.

"Jurassic Park." Same theme of scientist vs. scienist.

You never see a scientist battling the forces of unreason ("Tune in for Dr. Quinn, Embyronic Stem-Cell Researcher"). The only mainstream movie I can think of that did this was "Contact". Sadly, people got so caught up in the unwise decision to use real polical speeches (one from Clinton in particular) that the real point of that movie was obscured.

Even better, try renting this movie (if you can find it). Better than "120 Days of Sodom"!

No, it that were the case there would be no reason to adapt the book at all. If you're going to trade on the good name of a book to draw an audience you have some duty to repay that by giving them something based on what they came to see.

I'd disagree with that. A case in point is Adaptation , a great film, but one which has very little to do with what it was based on ( The Orchid Thief ). The book provided inspiration for what the movie turned out to be, and I suspect most moviegoers were glad they got what they did instead of a straightforward adaptation.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather see what the writer of Adaptation does with the material.

And Spielberg made this wonderful documentary about it back in 1979 starring John Belushi. He got the year wrong though.

Since it clearly took a long time to make the movie (40 drafts of the damn screenplay, plus likely a ton of post-production special effects work), it's pretty safe to say that Anthony deserves no credit for the storyline of the film.

I'd like to see how any film can be more faithful than that one, because it pretty much reproduces the story word for word.

I'm glad to see that someone has undertaken the task of creating a museum setting for so much of this memorabilia. (Even if it is a vanity effort.) Many early films are known only from their titles and a few salvaged props -- the films themselves have degraded into cellulose dust. I find it sad that so much of the early history of cinema has been lost entirely; especially since so many of the first science fiction films were delightful works of whimsy. (See IMDB and Filmsite for their descriptions of Georges Méliès "A Trip to the Moon".)
Hmm. I wonder if any of the props for that one survived. If so, I hope that they'll show up at Mr. Allen's Museum someday.

I was thinking 'Little Nemo'. In which case, the game was released before the movie. My bad. =)

For years, a directors cut of Ridley Scott's movie Legend was completed and ready for ditribution. However, it could not be sold due to the restored soundtrack composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith, Scott, and the studio all claimed they didn't own the soundtrack. Since they didn't know who to pay, they couldn't release the movie. (The movie was released after a couple of years, I assume they figured out who to pay)

Impressive stuff, and nice that IMDb has Hammerhead credited.

Disney has also put video sales of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on permanent hiatus. And of course Disney has refused a theatrical re-release for years because poor old Snow White had beautiful skin which was "white as snow". Don't want to cause any psychological damage for those of us whose skin color can't compete with Snow White!

It's a damn shame. Snow White in that lush three-strip Technicolor is one of the most gorgeous animated features ever made. Its role in the history of animation is truly monumental.

No one got rich, yet it enabled the private sector to fund preservation through the resale of videos of long out of print materials. The output of famous movies stars like Clara Bow (the "It" girl) and Colleen Moore is becoming almost completely unavailable to the average person unable to arrange a private screening with the an archive.

It is no accident the the copyright law was pushed through to make 1923 the cut-off year. After 1924 movies became more "modern" in quality of camera and film, and adaptation of the standard speed of 24 frames per second. Also after 1924 phonograph recordings began to use the new electronic recording techniques which allowed for higher fidelity and sound quality compared to the old acoustic recordings.

The saddest part about the films is that the owners of the copyrights have no interest in preserving them. These movies are literally dissolving into dust as the nitrate based film stock decomposes. Copyright extension has been a complete disaster with respect the preservation of film and early sound recordings.

Disclaimer: I have, in the past, spent significant time as an administrator of a PK MUD. Obviously, this puts a certain spin on my opinions here.

The outcome of PvP combat in a MMORPG is heavily dependant on the class and level of the participants.

Historically, this has been true, but it doesn't necessarily have to be.

It's possible to create a game in which one or two classes don't dominate PvP.

It's equally possible to create a game in which the higher level character does not win 90% of the time.

I'd further add that I believe that it's possible to do both without creating a game that's stupid or boring.

When I think about PvP, oddly, I often think of the movie My Cousin Vinny. There's a scene in there where Vinny explains that even though the prosecution's case seems very solid, it really can't be because the boys are innocent. He uses cards as an analogy for their witnesses, showing that while they look perfect and respectable taken from one angle, viewed from another, there's nothing there. I'm not explaining it very well, but those who have seen the movie will know what I'm talking about.

I think the balance of various character types in a PvP game needs to be like that. There should be no other character type in the game that yours can't beat with a little ingenuity and the proper setup. If you can engineer a situation that pits the "square" face of your card against some less ideal face of theirs, you should be able to win. The reverse, of course, is also true: there should be no character type in the game that yours can't lose to if you fight dumb enough.

Now, it's probably true that few, if any, MMORPGs currently in existence are deep enough, strategically, for that kind of class balance model to be possible. In my mind, that's a sign that we should be demanding more from games, rather than give up on the PvP model for this kind of game.
