I saw the BlueManGroup in Boston a couple years back, the show was called "Tubes." It's still running. (It's no 'Cats', but this isn't Broadway, either!) If you've ever had fun whonking on a piece of PVC pipe for the noise it makes, these people are for you!

The 286, bonehead or not?Remember, the architecture was designed long before the world was flooded with crappy PC-DOS/MS-DOS real mode software.
According to Intel's history page the 286 was born in 1982, so you have a point. Of course, PC ATs didn't see the light of day until 1984 and then the damage was done.

the intel 80186? that thing flopped pretty hard, but i guess they are selling it for embedded systems.
or, what about making the i8088 a 16-bit cpu, with an 8-bit bus? that set computing back years, until the i80286 became (sort of) popular in the later 80s.

It does run x86 code, but is designed for IA-64 (NOT X86). Curiously, most of the
/. crowd is bashing Intel for this because it won't run x86 code as fast as a Pentium 4. The Hammer series from AMD is a 64bit version of x86, with all the problems that traditional x86 chips have. It may work out in the short term, but I would much have a 3rd generation IA-64 bit chip than a 3rd generation Hammer chip.I just pray that whithin 10 years Intel releases an IA-64 based chip that is NOT backwards compatible. For God's sake, it's time to cut the cord...

IA-64, Intel's 64-bit architecture is not based on x86/IA-32. Starting with the Itanium and going to McKinley. Supposed to be for servers, but so was every other chip. I would guess in a few years we will be seeing quite a few IA-64 desktops....hopefully.

Re:Wouldnt this cause some interference?No, no, no! It does *NOT* use 8 wires. Two pairs are set aside for other purposes (voice, etc.) This is the 100BASE-TX specification. There *is* a 100BASE-T4 specification, which uses all 4 pairs, but this is rarely used and is for lower-than-CAT5 cabling.

I'm a little confused (maybe like the rest of you), as to why anyone believes that looping the benchmarks will do any good. Benchmarks tend to fall into two categories:
First, there are benchmarks which are a snippet of code from a real-world application. These snippets are not random, but are captured to represent the typical operation of the application. However, the code tends to be more diverse, with fewer loops and a wider variety of subroutines, which tend to make these benchmarks scale very poorly with most processors.
Second, there are the so-called "artifical" benchmarks, which are programs written to emphasize some aspect of a processor's operation (memory bandwidth, integer/floating point throughout, etc.) These benchmarks scale extremely well, because they contain numerous well-behaved loops.
Processors have numerous innovations that make them tuned for looped code. Processors have had instruction caches for at least 15 years now. Intel has a trace cache in the Pentium 4. AMD has predecode In addition, modern processors incorporate branch prediction schemes to help predict loops. With a the same pieces of code run through the processor several times, the processor will usually get the direction of the branch correct, leading to greater execution throughput
Getting back to the original point, looping any piece of code through any processor will improve its performance on that code, provided that it fits in its caches and predictors. Since a majority of benchmarks are application-based, I can see why Transmeta is a bit concerned about comparing apples to apples. Even with pre-translated code, Crusoe is not much better of than any other x86 processor.
That being said, their low power technology was a good idea, but their overall performance is lower, so I'm betting that Intel's high performance coupled with their lower power versions is at the heart of IBM and Compaq's decision, not through any political or economic pressure, but simply because Transmeta isn't that far in the lead with (performance/power). -

Nope. Nothing was removed, just never used. There are 36 address bits ON the original PPro package itself. Selector math is done in 36 bits too.

How this works..
The P6 processors have microcode that you can change at runtime. However, these changes DO NOT GET SAVED ACCROSS POWER CYCLES . This is used by Intel to fix some errata in the shipping microprocessor. The way it is implemented, since it is not written permanently, the system BIOS has to write microcode updates to the CPU at boot time, on every reboot. This enables Intel to make revisions take effect with simple BIOS updates that everyone is used to. This was very interesting for me, as I had no idea that BIOS updates held such weight with the P6 family of processors!
If you look at the PPro Processor Specification Update (the accompanying PDF), you will see that some of the erratum are marked as: "Workaround: It is possible for BIOS code to contain a workaround for this erratum." This indicates an erratum that can be fixed by microcode updates.
The advantage to having this is significant, in my opinion. You don't have to buy a new processor stepping to get erratum fixed. Granted, there will be plenty of erratum that can't be fixed with a microcode change, but this is at least a step in the right direction.
As was pointed out by another poster, Linux 2.4 has /dev/microcode support for P6 processors. What this allows you to do is update your microcode on boot. Why would you want to do this? Intel issues new microcode updates to the BIOS writers. If you get your hands on new microcode before there is a full flashable BIOS revision available, this will allow you to install the new microcode at bootup, removing one layer of your dependency on your BIOS writer.
Anyway, I think this shit is really cool, but not something I plan on using unless there is a serious errata found in my processor that can be fixed this way. It sounds like quite a bit of hastle for marginal benefit in most cases. However, its great that Linux provides us this option.
Anyone have any ideas about hacking microcode? I donno if Intel releases specs on it. Could be very interesting. -

Umm, okay...
The article says: In technical terms, "BIOS Update" is a hidden (i.e. barely documented at all outside of Intel) feature.... I work for a company that sells Intel products (a small reseller, $2M a year), and we've known about the feature since the Pentium II's introduction. At trainings for "system integrators", Intel has waged a very aggressive campaign of making sure that, along with proper BIOS updates, we install processor "step updates".
Based on the low-level nature of microcode, I do not believe that anyone w/o intimate knowledge of the design of the processor hardware itself would be able to write workable microcode updates. Even if someone did, I also believe that it would be EXTREMELY difficult to get a "trojan horse" that could do anything useful. The microcode is _so_ low level, and accomplishing any kind of useful trickery would need to be done at a very high level.
No doubt, there'll be a lot of posts about how "sinister" this feature is-- especially given that Intel doesn't document the feature-- even though it's been publicly documented for years. Hit the Intel Developer Site and search for "Microcode update". I get 21 hits on that search, most of which are relevant. Intel doesn't give the stepping update utility out to the public, but if you update the BIOS on an Intel motherboard, you generally get some stepping updates loaded as well. Not sure about non-Intel boards.

FYI: The Open Runtime Platform from intel seems to be an open sourced VM, which happens to also be a JVM. Actually it seems similar to Microsoft's
.net runtime... I'm not sure what languages it currently supports besides Java... -

Ah, but it doesn't require tamper-proof hardware, only hardware that is sufficiently tamper-resistant.
Here's one piece of the puzzle: let's say that the digital link between a future digital monitor and your video card is encrypted, meaning that open-source software with the keys embedded would defeat the purpose.
...meaning that open-source video drivers for such hardware could conceivably be illegal for much the same reason DeCSS is.
Open Source operating systems suddenly become very, very screwed.
Expand this approach to other hardware.

For students, they'll help finding housing and getting a car for the duration of the internship.
I'm a little biased since I've worked for Intel for over five years. It's always been nice to stay focused on UNIX systems and let other people deal with the Windows world.

HP has an IA-64 emulator for Linux
Just the other day, I was browsing developer.intel.com, and found that HP was giving away an IA-64 development kit (including simulator), also for Linux. The URL is: http://developer.intel.com/design/ia-64/linux.htm
. Also, SGI is giving away their Pro64 Linux tool suite, apparently GCC & friends with SGI enahancements for IA-64: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/Pro64/. Now I'm no IA-64 enthusiast, but the thought of extending x86 junk to 64-bits is just... chilling. -
Opensource wearable computingIn the wake of commercialisation of the emerging wearable computers industry, it's nice to know that there are projects out there working on designing wearable computing systems that won't lock you into using proprietary software.
One project that comes to my mind is the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales's 'Pleb' project. About the length of two Australian fifty cent coins lined up next to each other, it contains a StrongARM processor and can use a number of different kernels and OSes, but most importantly Linux. I was recently lucky enough to see a demonstration of the system where a stripped down version of Debian GNU/Linux being booted off it at the university's last open day.
The main goal of Pleb is produce a "Flexible, Low-Power system for use in Portable and Embedded applications which is capable of a high level of processing power." However, more impressive is that the project's guidelines even states:
"Where possible GNU tools should be used as much as possible since both the multi-platform availability and the GPL licensing insure accessibility to all interested parties. Software requiring tools which are prohibitive to most developers (through pricing or lack of platform support) is discouraged"
Pleb's different foundation does much to boost this project's credibility as a viable competitor to Charmed. Charmed appears to be more focused on becoming the next easy-to-use consumer toy for those on the richer side of the digital divide. Pleb on the other hand has the potential to become a more widely supported and of course, open-source wearable computing platform, and hopefully if it does become a commercial enterprise be much more affordable for people in all societies.

The reason these "old" interfaces are going the way of the dodo is because, well, they are old and we have better alternatives that people are actually adopting this time.
Plus it doesn't hurt that the PC99 spec eliminates the ISA bus and steers people away from serial, parallel, and PS/2. -

500 Mhz = 28 watts
600 MHz = 34.5
Those are (i believe) numbers for the SECC versions. The FPGA versions are a bit lower, as follows:
533EB = 14 w
600EB = 15.8 w
800EB = 20.8 w
All the way up to the non-existant 1.13 GHz P3, which draws 35.5 w -
Yahoo! Support for onboard ethernet on i815.
Just bought some of Intel's i815 motherboards with on-board ethernet. Unfortunately, 2.2.16 does not have a driver for the Intel® 82562ET 10/100 Mbit/sec Platform LAN that comes built into the motherboards (optional of course). From what I read on newsgroups support could be added with a patch or two to the 2.2.16 kernel since the chip is based on popular ethernet cards using tulip drivers, but unfortunately I don't possess enough Linux Karma to get that to work yet. Anyway, now that 2.2.17 is out hopefully RedHat will be releasing some new RPMs soon and I can get my ethernet to work, and if they don't.. well I'll just have to get down n' dirty and make RedHat and my 2.2.17 kernel play nice

The relation of the patents to WC and BurstingStarting with the Pentium Pro Intel introduced a Write Combined (WC) memory type for fast transfer of data. Intel discusses this and its application to graphics devices here: This is related to how the processor works internally. By marking regions of memory as WC the processor can issue writes to that region faster. There are controls for setting what regions of memory are WC, referred to as MTRRs (Memory Type Range Register).
What a user has to understand in referencing these regions of memory is that order is not guaranteed. So if my application writes to memory locations 1, 2 and then 3, if this is WC memory then there is no guarantee what order they will happen in. If I am just writing directly to the frame buffer (turning pixels on and off) then I don't care about the order, the faster the better, as long as they all happen. But what if I was trying to write commands to the device? If I don't mark the memory as WC then the writes may not happen as fast as if I do. And how do I know when all the writes have been performed? (I don't even know how many there are.) To solve this problem you use a DMA as Intel suggested above. Oh, and don't forget to patent it.
There is also just some relation to the burst architecture of PCI/AGP. If I write ten consecutive addresses as one burst then it happens faster than if I write ten individual addresses. The patent that offends me the most is the Register array for utilizing burst mode transfer on local bus. It basically says that if I used to write to one address repeatedly to give the graphics chip a bunch of commands; instead I should write to a range of addresses and the device should treat them as if I wrote them to the same address repeatedly (i.e. execute all the commands in order). This way the writes appear as a burst write and get transferred faster.

Estimation of pentium equivalentI've done quite a bit of development on StrongARMs. I find that for typical workstation work I would multiply the StrongARM clock speed by 0.60 or so to get PentiumIII equivalents. That is, a 200MHz StrongARM performs about like a mythical 120MHz PentiumIII.
That 0.60 is variable by task. Some tasks its closer to 1.0, some its closer to 0.10 (we just don't do those :-)
So, lets look at the Intel XScale Benchmarks or rather hallucinatory benchmarks since they don't have the silicon yet...
It looks like a 1GHz Xscale is about three times as fast as a 233MHz StrongARM. Thats three times as fast as a Pentium III 130MHz, or perhaps in the ballpark of a PentiumIII 400MHz.
So stop having GHz envy and instead marvel at the really neat parts of the architecture.
- Its a PIII-400 eqivalent at 1.6Watts. Heck, the fan only on your PIII-400 is probably 1.6Watts. Even a Beowulf cluster of these won't make enough heat to keep Natalie Portman's grits hot.
- It probably costs 10-20% what a PIII costs. There will come a time (has come?) when you just don't need the fastest CPU to run office productivity applications or surf the web.

Now, to the technical stuff.
According to Intels site, they have added power management features to the chip that allow the clock speed to be adjusted from software. Yes, this is similar to Cruesoe, but it seems like they have taken the concept even further, allowing one to go from 0 (standby) to 1000MHz. Not bad.
They have also added a few DSP functions for multimedia applications. Further details:
- 7/8 stage superpiplined core
- 32KB Instruction, 32KB Data Caches.
- 2KB Mini-Data Cache to avoid data cache thrashing
- Performance Monitoring Unit (Like on PII and up)

And You Thought I Was Kidding
Prepare to witness the most concerted and massive engineering effort -- both social and technical -- ever undertaken by mankind: The digital equivalent of damming the ocean.
I wrote about this on Slashdot almost a year ago, in the vague hope it might become a featured article: The music and movie industies are working very hard to prevent you from using your lawfully-obtained material in any way they don't want. To that end, they have formed the Copy Protection Technical Working Group (CPTWG), which is working hand-in-hand with a ton of high-tech companies to bring pervasive copy protection measures to your PC.
I saved my original screed on the subject, and it's reproduced below, with appropriate updates. Bottom Line: Do not let them sneak this garbage past you or your friends. If you find that a product contains copy protection, don't buy it, and encourage others to do likewise.

Recent stories on Slashdot have told of the ongoing "tennis match" between digital content providers versus consumers and technically skilled people. The recent cracking of DVD's Content Scrambling System (CSS) lent ammunition to the opinion held by computing professionals and users that copy protection systems are doomed to fail. The effort has been likened to building a dam against the ocean; a foolish and useless exercise. In Slashdot discussion fora, the point has often been raised, "If you can perceive it, you can copy it. What are they going to do, encrypt the bits all the way to the speaker/electron gun?" If the Copy Protection Technical Working Group gets its way, that is precisely what's going to happen.
I received a piece of email spam today, which actually turned out to be useful (probably the only time that's ever happened anywhere). It directed me to a flat panel display industry group. Among others, one of the links pointed to the California Display Network, which had a link pointing to technical info on flat panel technology. Since I currently earn my living writing graphics card and display drivers, I clicked through to see what I could learn.
I found an entry for an overview of digital visual interfaces, provided by Silicon Image. As I reviewed the headings of the slides, one entry stopped me cold: Conten t Protection Status. Content protection? In a flat panel?? Yup: "Implementation of DVI content protection is suitable for PCs and monitors." [emphasis mine]
Thus began an evening of link clicking and Google searches to find out what this off-handed remark could mean. The slide made mention of the 'CPTWG'. This is the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, a consortium of content providers (movie companies), consumer electronics manufacturers, and players in the IT industry. This is the same group that developed CSS for DVD players.
One paragraph from the above page is particularly disturbing:
CPTWG has focused until now only on "casual piracy [sic]", characterized as what a grandmother can do in her home with her DVD. Piracy [sic] requiring even the level of expertise (and equipment) of her grandson, who might be an EE student, has been excluded from consideration. There is a growing awareness that a broader content protection effort may be necessary.
The most recent meeting of the CPTWG was yesterday, 8 December, 1999. Their meeting announcements may be found here. It costs $100 to attend. According to the site, their last meeting was on 11 April 2000. It's not clear if additional meetings have been held at regular intervals.
The attendance roster from the April meeting (RTF file) lists a very interesting, and possibly worrying, mix of organizations. A partial list of representatives included:

- AFMA (American Film Marketing Association),
- Sony Pictures Entertainment,
- Universal Studios,

What are they all working toward? Quite simply, to prevent you from using your lawfully obtained digital material in any way they don't want.

By using cryptographic authentication techniques, a device offering digital content will "handshake" with other devices on the bus to assure that digital data is only received by, "compliant devices." In a revised overview of the proposal, IDF Talk: Content Protection for the IEEE 1394 Bus, Intel offers concrete implementation details, including:
- DSS (Digital Signature Standard)
- Diffie-Hellman key exchange for device authentication,
- Blowfish cipher for content encryption, with a keylength of 32-128 bits,
- Digital watermarking techniques to declare "rights" (right to playback, right to copy, etc.) to the receiving device.

The ignoble and richly-deserved death of DIVX showed -- fairly unequivocally, I thought -- that consumers want to make free, fair use of their digital media, without interference from outside. I believe its death reinforces the future toward which we've been pushing for centuries: Increased abundance at reduced cost. We can only hope that the lesson of DIVX will be repeated until it is learned.

I wrote about this on Slashdot almost a year ago, in the vague hope it might become a featured article: The music and movie industies are working very hard to prevent you from using your lawfully-obtained material in any way they don't want. To that end, they have formed the Copy Protection Technical Working Group (CPTWG), which is working hand-in-hand with a ton of high-tech companies to bring pervasive copy protection measures to your PC.
I saved my original screed on the subject, and it's reproduced below, with appropriate updates. Bottom Line: Do not let them sneak this garbage past you or your friends. If you find that a product contains copy protection, don't buy it, and encourage others to do likewise.

I received a piece of email spam today, which actually turned out to be useful (probably the only time that's ever happened anywhere). It directed me to a flat panel display industry group. Among others, one of the links pointed to the California Display Network, which had a link pointing to technical info on flat panel technology. Since I currently earn my living writing graphics card and display drivers, I clicked through to see what I could learn.
I found an entry for an overview of digital visual interfaces, provided by Silicon Image. As I reviewed the headings of the slides, one entry stopped me cold: Conten t Protection Status. Content protection? In a flat panel?? Yup: "Implementation of DVI content protection is suitable for PCs and monitors." [emphasis mine]
Thus began an evening of link clicking and Google searches to find out what this off-handed remark could mean. The slide made mention of the 'CPTWG'. This is the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, a consortium of content providers (movie companies), consumer electronics manufacturers, and players in the IT industry. This is the same group that developed CSS for DVD players.
One paragraph from the above page is particularly disturbing:
CPTWG has focused until now only on "casual piracy [sic]", characterized as what a grandmother can do in her home with her DVD. Piracy [sic] requiring even the level of expertise (and equipment) of her grandson, who might be an EE student, has been excluded from consideration. Intel's copy protection proposals state, in bold letters, "No content protection = No Hollywood content." Even the with the advent of CDRs, no music industry executive in his right mind would suggest dropping CD sales and going strictly with cassettes and vinyl. If nothing else, the manufacturing costs for CDs are lower than those for cassettes and vinyl. Likewise, DVDs are tremendously cheaper to produce than videotapes. Videotape duplication is a labor-intensive process; DVDs can be stamped out automatically. The savings in cost-of-goods alone would more than balance against any unrealized sales from casual copying. Corporate shareholders, always mindful of the bottom line, will also demand that the studios move to the cheaper, higher-quality process, copy protected or not.
The fact is that the computer and electronics firms are in the driver's seat, and are free to dictate how the new digital formats will work. Hollywood will use whatever format becomes popular, whether it has copy protection or not. They may grumble about it, but they'll use it. The economics afford them little choice.
We are only now beginning to explore the social and ethical consequences of a Star Trek-like universe where everything can be infinitely duplcated at zero cost. We have no idea where things will end up. But now is not the time to start erecting electronic walls and imposing artificial scarcity. The ignoble and richly-deserved death of DIVX showed -- fairly unequivocally, I thought -- that consumers want to make free, fair use of their digital media, without interference from outside. I believe its death reinforces the future toward which we've been pushing for centuries: Increased abundance at reduced cost. We can only hope that the lesson of DIVX will be repeated until it is learned.

I wrote about this on Slashdot almost a year ago, in the vague hope it might become a featured article: The music and movie industies are working very hard to prevent you from using your lawfully-obtained material in any way they don't want. To that end, they have formed the Copy Protection Technical Working Group (CPTWG), which is working hand-in-hand with a ton of high-tech companies to bring pervasive copy protection measures to your PC.
I saved my original screed on the subject, and it's reproduced below, with appropriate updates. Bottom Line: Do not let them sneak this garbage past you or your friends. If you find that a product contains copy protection, don't buy it, and encourage others to do likewise.

Among others, one of the links pointed to the California Display Network, which had a link pointing to technical info on flat panel technology. Since I currently earn my living writing graphics card and display drivers, I clicked through to see what I could learn.
I found an entry for an overview of digital visual interfaces, provided by Silicon Image. As I reviewed the headings of the slides, one entry stopped me cold: Conten t Protection Status. Content protection? In a flat panel?? Yup: "Implementation of DVI content protection is suitable for PCs and monitors." [emphasis mine]
Thus began an evening of link clicking and Google searches to find out what this off-handed remark could mean. The slide made mention of the 'CPTWG'. This is the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, a consortium of content providers (movie companies), consumer electronics manufacturers, and players in the IT industry. This is the same group that developed CSS for DVD players.
One paragraph from the above page is particularly disturbing:

Version 1.0 of the standard has been published and is available for download (PDF format). The DVI spec currently does not stipulate copy protection measures. However, plans are in the works to incorporate it.
Intel is one of the primary contributors to this effort. On Intel's developer site, they have some papers on copy protection for IEEE 1394 (Firewire) digital streams. In two separate articles, 1394-based Digital Content Protection: an Intel Proposal, and Content Protection for IEEE 1394 Serial Buses (the latter being a Powerpoint presentation masquerading as a PDF file), Intel outlines its proposal for protecting digital content over Firewire. By using cryptographic authentication techniques, a device offering digital content will "handshake" with other devices on the bus to assure that digital data is only received by, "compliant devices." In a revised overview of the proposal, IDF Talk: Content Protection for the IEEE 1394 Bus, Intel offers concrete implementation details, including:
- DSS (Digital Signature Standard)
- Diffie-Hellman key exchange for device authentication,
- Blowfish cipher for content encryption, with a keylength of 32-128 bits,
- Digital watermarking techniques to declare "rights" (right to playback, right to copy, etc.) to the receiving device.

Intel's proposal also recommends that the copy protection system be field-upgradeable to thwart ongoing attacks, and that it should be possible to revoke (read: disable) a device determined to be "compromised." (The tone of the proposals is also interesting. It's previously been thought that, because of USB, Intel is hostile to IEEE 1394. Yet these proposals suggest that Intel's quite enthusiastic about 1394... Once copy protection is incorporated.)
Intel's proposal mentions only IEEE 1394. However, it also mentions that there's nothing preventing the technique being applied generally to any bi-directional link. So for all occurrences of '1394', substitute 'DVI', and you've got an idea of what to look forward to in your new digital monitor. And your new DVD player. And your new HDTV set. If you download the roster and read closely, you'll see every major piece of your computer represented. There is no doubt that at least one part of your computer -- your CPU, your RAM, your disk drive, your graphics card, your monitor -- is manufactured by one of these companies.
If you look further still, you'll see there are no consumer advocacy groups listed.
What are they all working toward? Quite simply, to prevent you from using your lawfully obtained digital material in any way they don't want.
Here's one example of how they'll do it: If you've visited Fry's or CompUSA recently, you'll notice that full-size flat panel displays are starting to appear. Currently, most of these displays are based on the old VGA analog signals, which are converted into the digital signals needed by the panels. The Digital Display Working Group is working on a new connector and signalling standard called Digital Visual Interface (DVI) that will allow computer displays to go all-digital. You won't need a DAC on the video card; the digital signals will be fed straight through to the display. Image fidelity will be much higher, since there won't be any intervening DAC/ADC conversions. Version 1.0 of the standard has been published and is available for download (PDF format). The DVI spec currently does not stipulate copy protection measures. However, plans are in the works to incorporate it.
Intel is one of the primary contributors to this effort. On Intel's developer site, they have some papers on copy protection for IEEE 1394 (Firewire) digital streams. In two separate articles, 1394-based Digital Content Protection: an Intel Proposal, and Content Protection for IEEE 1394 Serial Buses (the latter being a Powerpoint presentation masquerading as a PDF file), Intel outlines its proposal for protecting digital content over Firewire. By using cryptographic authentication techniques, a device offering digital content will "handshake" with other devices on the bus to assure that digital data is only received by, "compliant devices." In a revised overview of the proposal, IDF Talk: Content Protection for the IEEE 1394 Bus, Intel offers concrete implementation details, including:
- DSS (Digital Signature Standard)
- Diffie-Hellman key exchange for device authentication,
- Blowfish cipher for content encryption, with a keylength of 32-128 bits,
- Digital watermarking techniques to declare "rights" (right to playback, right to copy, etc.) to the receiving device.
The full proposal (currently version 0.91), with lots of technical detail, is mirrored on CPTWG's site (the links to Intel's site don't work).
Intel's proposal also recommends that the copy protection system be field-upgradeable to thwart ongoing attacks, and that it should be possible to revoke (read: disable) a device determined to be "compromised." (The tone of the proposals is also interesting. It's previously been thought that, because of USB, Intel is hostile to IEEE 1394. Yet these proposals suggest that Intel's quite enthusiastic about 1394... Once copy protection is incorporated.)
Intel's proposal mentions only IEEE 1394. However, it also mentions that there's nothing preventing the technique being applied generally to any bi-directional link. So for all occurrences of '1394', substitute 'DVI', and you've got an idea of what to look forward to in your new digital monitor. And your new DVD player. And your new HDTV set. And your new USB speakers.
Intel goes even further in their paper, A Framework for DVD-Audio Content Protection. In it, the author suggests that DVD-Audio recorders permanently remember the IRSC (International Standard Recording Code) of every song the device is asked to copy, so that it may only be copied once, period. They go on to suggest that the recorder could have a modem built-in to authorize (read: purchase) the ability to make additional copies.
In short, through this industry consortium, Hollywood proposes to exert control over every link in the digital chain, from the digital camera, to the disk drive, to the CPU, to the graphics card, to your display. They will decide what rights you have. Even if a court decides Fair Use includes multiple copies for personal use (such as assembling a video montage), it won't matter. Your computer will still refuse to make the copies (and probably fink on you, as well).
This coordinated effort is ostensibly to combat unsanctioned copying (which the industry chronically refers to incorrectly as 'theft' and 'piracy'). However, no one has ever been able to provably quantify the value of unrealized sales due to such copying. All dollar estimates that have been published are just that: estimates, based on idealized extrapolations of what-if scenarios. Moreover, although the industry claims to "lose" billions every year, they continue to post record profits. Finally, despite the proliferation of CDR drives and the Internet, most unrealized sales are the result of organized mass counterfeiting rings, not casual copying. None of the proposed methods I've seen appear to thwart mass counterfeiting at all. So clearly there's some other reason for all this.
The thing that puzzles me most is why the computer and consumer electronics industries haven't told Hollywood to take a hike. Intel's copy protection proposals state, in bold letters, "No content protection = No Hollywood content." This belief is taken as axiomatic by all the players, and appears to be the driving force behind the entire effort. This belief is also false.
Audio on CDs are recorded as plaintext, and the music industry continues to earn rapacious profits. Even the with the advent of CDRs, no music industry executive in his right mind would suggest dropping CD sales and going strictly with cassettes and vinyl. If nothing else, the manufacturing costs for CDs are lower than those for cassettes and vinyl. Likewise, DVDs are tremendously cheaper to produce than videotapes. Videotape duplication is a labor-intensive process; DVDs can be stamped out automatically. The savings in cost-of-goods alone would more than balance against any unrealized sales from casual copying. Corporate shareholders, always mindful of the bottom line, will also demand that the studios move to the cheaper, higher-quality process, copy protected or not.
The fact is that the computer and electronics firms are in the driver's seat, and are free to dictate how the new digital formats will work. Hollywood will use whatever format becomes popular, whether it has copy protection or not. They may grumble about it, but they'll use it. The economics afford them little choice.
We are only now beginning to explore the social and ethical consequences of a Star Trek-like universe where everything can be infinitely duplcated at zero cost. We have no idea where things will end up. But now is not the time to start erecting electronic walls and imposing artificial scarcity. The ignoble and richly-deserved death of DIVX showed -- fairly unequivocally, I thought -- that consumers want to make free, fair use of their digital media, without interference from outside. I believe its death reinforces the future toward which we've been pushing for centuries: Increased abundance at reduced cost. We can only hope that the lesson of DIVX will be repeated until it is learned.

And You Thought I Was Kidding
Prepare to witness the most concerted and massive engineering effort -- both social and technical -- ever undertaken by mankind: The digital equivalent of damming the ocean.
I wrote about this on Slashdot almost a year ago, in the vague hope it might become a featured article: The music and movie industies are working very hard to prevent you from using your lawfully-obtained material in any way they don't want. To that end, they have formed the Copy Protection Technical Working Group (CPTWG), which is working hand-in-hand with a ton of high-tech companies to bring pervasive copy protection measures to your PC.
I saved my original screed on the subject, and it's reproduced below, with appropriate updates. Bottom Line: Do not let them sneak this garbage past you or your friends. If you find that a product contains copy protection, don't buy it, and encourage others to do likewise.

Recent stories on Slashdot have told of the ongoing "tennis match" between digital content providers versus consumers and technically skilled people. The recent cracking of DVD's Content Scrambling System (CSS) lent ammunition to the opinion held by computing professionals and users that copy protection systems are doomed to fail. The effort has been likened to building a dam against the ocean; a foolish and useless exercise. In Slashdot discussion fora, the point has often been raised, "If you can perceive it, you can copy it. What are they going to do, encrypt the bits all the way to the speaker/electron gun?" If the Copy Protection Technical Working Group gets its way, that is precisely what's going to happen.
I received a piece of email spam today, which actually turned out to be useful (probably the only time that's ever happened anywhere). It directed me to a flat panel display industry group. Among others, one of the links pointed to the California Display Network, which had a link pointing to technical info on flat panel technology. Since I currently earn my living writing graphics card and display drivers, I clicked through to see what I could learn.
I found an entry for an overview of digital visual interfaces, provided by Silicon Image. As I reviewed the headings of the slides, one entry stopped me cold: Conten t Protection Status. Content protection? In a flat panel?? Yup: "Implementation of DVI content protection is suitable for PCs and monitors." [emphasis mine]
Thus began an evening of link clicking and Google searches to find out what this off-handed remark could mean. The slide made mention of the 'CPTWG'. This is the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, a consortium of content providers (movie companies), consumer electronics manufacturers, and players in the IT industry. This is the same group that developed CSS for DVD players.
One paragraph from the above page is particularly disturbing:
CPTWG has focused until now only on "casual piracy [sic]", characterized as what a grandmother can do in her home with her DVD. Piracy [sic] requiring even the level of expertise (and equipment) of her grandson, who might be an EE student, has been excluded from consideration. There is a growing awareness that a broader content protection effort may be necessary.
The most recent meeting of the CPTWG was yesterday, 8 December, 1999. Their meeting announcements may be found here. It costs $100 to attend. According to the site, their last meeting was on 11 April 2000. It's not clear if additional meetings have been held at regular intervals.
The attendance roster from the April meeting (RTF file) lists a very interesting, and possibly worrying, mix of organizations. A partial list of representatives included:

Real3D StarFighter does, I think
If I understand correctly, the Real3D StarFighter (which I happen to own) does this, making use of the AGP bus to access system memory. According to the FAQ, that's why the PCI StarFighters have so much more memory (32-64 MB) than the AGP StarFighters (4-8 MB). Javascript and HTMLJavascript and HTML look like an ideal solution to me. HTML gives you all the formatting power you need, and Javascript can be used to knock together indexing and searching.
If I remember correctly the Intel Developer Insight CD set has a few searchable documents; the entire CD set (a mirror of http://developer.intel.com) is in HTML and the search scripts are in Javascript. I think.
