Re:Seems like a good thing to me...
Damage done by guns can be tremendous, it's the manufacturers that really do deserve severe penalties.
Since in the US guns are used far more often by law abiding citizens to protect themselves and others than they are used by criminals, do we then give gun makers rewards? Fair is fair, right?
Example: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new...
Example: http://www.khou.com/news/local...
And those were just the examples that hit the news (most never do) in the last couple weeks that popped up at the top of Google results. There were many more.
We need a national program to treat the mass-hoplophobia that seems to be spreading at an alarming rate. You appear to be exhibiting some of the symptoms. Perhaps you should get yourself checked.

Re:Reason for not talking to people
Articles from last year suggest that the Facebook posting was exactly what led to it. After the defense attorney saw the post by the judge, he motioned for recusal and mistrial. Slaughter was removed from the case, and soon after, the new judge declared a mistrial.
http://www.houstonchronicle.co...
The accused was found not guilty, and looking at the details of the case, it's not hard to see why. The child was (and probably still is) severely disturbed, allegedly killing small animals, making threats against his parents, and hiding knives.

Was the diagnosis of Sgt. Monning ever confirmed? Did the Boston Globe just forget to count him?

"Monnig was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian inside an ambulance protected with plastic on the inside. Once there, his blood was drawn. He was cleared of the Ebola virus the next day."

Re:Real Problem
Rules of Engagement can certainly be to kill everything that moves, and then kill it again when it stops moving.
By the same token Rules of Engagement can be to not shoot anything even if it results in you being killed.
Should we stick to facts, or just make up BS?
And maintaining order in the elite's backyard is more high-stakes than military adventures.
I'm pretty sure that policing in the US involves more than patrolling the perimeter of the estates of billionaires.
. Even if the Rules were more restrained, where is the discipline to enforce them? When's the last time a cop faced the death penalty for misconduct?
Do you bother to check any of your wild ideas against the facts? Police officers are disciplined for misconduct, including being sent to prison when the crime is serious enough.
Does this help?

Re: Who chose to pursue this case?
As for the sperm party, the point of the party is so that the mom can honestly say she doesn't know who the possible father is. As for DNA having a damn thing to do whether or not you can get ordered to pay child support, that is an urban legend.
I'm not sure your if trolling or ignorant, but I'll bite for the people that could be misled into thinking actually biological fatherhood would have anything to do with child support. Many states do not give the father any opportunity to challenge paternity. If your married, named by the mother and don't receive the summons to court in time or even simply live with a woman long enough you can be ordered to pay child support. There are countless examples of men who have been ordered to pay child support for a child that isn't there's.

Re:Libel
What world do you live in? Police don't just raid a house because of some tag on Google Earth. What nonsense. You think we have a fleet of detectives monitoring Facebook in case someone posts "committin' a crime right naw!" And we announce ourselves so the homeowner would have no doubt it's the police and not some "intruder breaking down their door at 3am."!
What world do you live in sir? Clearly not the same one the rest of us do.

This was 5 minutes of looking. The list goes on and on. There are PLENTY of reasons for mature children and teenagers to know how to use firearms. One of the biggest reasons is the simple fact that it educates them in what freedom actually is.

Re:Just wow
There are laws to prosecute people who are responsible for minors encountering guns and getting hurt, and the parents of the little girl who was killed a few weeks ago should be prosecuted under them.
While it's clear that you mean the best for your children, your plan to ensure their safety would only lead them to harm the first time they encounter a gun without you around to stop them. Consider that somewhere between 33% - 45% of US households have a gun in them. Your children WILL be going into those houses in the normal course of growing up and having friends. Your choices are to ignore the possibility and blindly assume that none of your neighbors own guns, or accept that some do and educate your children on what to do: http://eddieeagle.nra.org/
As much as you love your children and want to protect them, keeping them in the dark about guns does not help you do it.
Would you say the parents of these children need mental help? http://www.khou.com/news/crime/Burglary-suspect-shot-by-15-year-old-son-of-deputy-97430719.html

Re:If there was a Bad at Math Map...
And if we're being honest, Texas only makes the list because of the big liberal cities like Houston that drive their economy.
Would that be the same liberal Houston that went Obama by 2 votes? -
Re:Well, then that settles it.
Actually, those things (except for war which is a terrible thing with no benefits) do have commercial value and should be done by private companies. The government's schools are little more than prisons preventing young adults from creating wealth ( look at http://www.khou.com/home/Honor-Student-Jailed-for-Absences-153847275.html ) spewing propaganda and poorly preparing students for basic life. Infrastructure can easily be created by private companies. Anytime there is a resource that needs to be moved, a private company will provide a way to get it out. Consider the following scenario: a logging company purchased a large chunk of land with many trees on it, the only thing is, there are no roads to get the lumber out. If it makes economic sense to buy the land, the company will create the infrastructure needed to move the logs throughout the land and to a location to sell them. Over time, if there is a need for the public to get to and from the logging area, the company will charge the users for maintenance of the infrastructure and improve it and a road is built without the government's involvement.

Re:Just out of curiosity...
Not sure how you missed all of the press releases, but the shuttles are being decommissioned and sent to various locations to be part of museum exhibits. Was a bit thing when they were trying to decide where. A bunch of cities put in bids for them and showed what they would do. The final decision was, one would go to NY, one to DC, one to Kennedy Space Center in Florida and one to just outside of Los Angelos.
They made the decision and announcement back in April You can google and find where they are dissecting the shuttles and removing many components that contain hazardous chemicals prior to sending them to their final museum homes.

Re:Alledged? sigh. /. slowly becoming a crank site
How so? It's your broken culture that produces the violence seen here. Sure, we have some problems with violence, but nothing remotely like what's seen there. Moreover, when we glamorize violence in our Hollywood movies, it's about "good guys" shooting up "bad guys". People cheer when the criminals get killed.
In Mexico, it's the criminals who are considered heroes: http://www.khou.com/news/Narco-culture-glamorizes-violent-lifestyle-in-Mexico-and-in-Texas-116571258.html
Mexican musicians write songs ("narco corridos") about how wonderful drug traffickers are. Narco cinema glamorizes drug smuggling. Hit men record gruesome killings and upload them to YouTube. Basically, your culture thinks crime is a good thing. No nation can ever be successful when its citizens think crime and violence against innocents is something to be respected and cherished. There is something fundamentally broken about your culture and your people, and if I had my way, you would have no contact with anyone else in the world.

Re:1984
Stating his/her best guess as to what is the goal of the board of education is not necessarily advocating the board's position. On the other hand, such a goal is so ridiculous that a simple statement like this implies endorsement of this type of abuse of the political process.
On the gripping hand, most public state curriculum boards are politicized even if it's only at the level of the spoils system. Once again Texas is doing things in the biggest possible way, excessively, with no sense of style.
"Don't Mess With Texas?" Give me a break. Sometimes Texas deserves to be messed with.
A case in point: http://www.khou.com/news/Candy-Gets-Third-Grader-A-Weeks-Detention-93033319.html -
Re:Bad summary, and intentionally misleading cover
That's not the story they were telling the week before:
http://www.khou.com/news/Candy-Gets-Third-Grader-A-Weeks-Detention-93033319.html
Jack Ellis, the superintendent for Brazos Independent School District, declined an on-camera interview. But he said the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned "minimal nutrition" foods.
"Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules," he said.and
Brazos Elementary Principal Jeanne Young, said the problem, in this instance, was that the candy was provided by another student - not the girl's parents.
-
Re:RTFA
Interesting that that statement came after the story about the school getting a letter from the state saying they went too far.
-
Follow up by the state
And here is a follow up from the state making it clear that Leighann was not in violation of the law.
“This particular incidence of candy possession as it has been reported by KHOU-TV would not be considered a violation of the state or federal nutrition program and therefore would not have jeopardized your district’s food service funding.” -

Re:KPRC Unreliable
You just don't realize the demographic they are targeting. Just take a look at their news line-up: Lauren Freeman, Daniella Guzmán, Rachel McNeill, Mariza Reyes, Dominique Sachse, Courtney Zavala, and my personal favorite Jennifer Reyna. I watch KHOU for my morning news but switch to channel 2 during commercials. I saw the report on the unmanned tests and given HPD's reputation of late I don't doubt for a minute they may have tried to cover up their tests. Heck HPD reported a guys death a suicide even though he was shot in the back of the head.

I never thought I'd say something like this, but GO TEXAS!
Well, given that one third of texas students don't graduate high school, how documents written by their state government are actually coherent enough that the file format makes a difference? -

Re:Physical Attacks Are Not GoodIf a fireman dies trying to fight the blaze, it's called capital murder (in many US jurisdictions, as far as I know in all that have the death penalty at all).
And "gosh, I didn't mean that to happen" isn't a defense, BTW.
Exactly. A year or so ago, a group of teenagers here in the Houston area, with the aid of one of the managers (a friend of theirs), robbed a local McDonald's, and ended up torching the place in the process. Two firefighters who were battling the blaze were killed. The suspects were later charged with murder, and found guilty.
The story is available here... of note is this sentence in one article: "Under Texas law, an accident due to the commission of another crime still amounts to murder, but not capital murder."
Just my $.02...
