Some things to point out.
Before I continue, I'd just like to point out that on the offchance that something goes wrong with regard to dev.perl.org, I uploaded a copy before the article was posted in case of Slashdotting or if you just want to use a mirror.
With that out of the way, there's a few limitations of the language which I found quite interesting:
- There's no switch statement
- There are no hash table variables (i.e. those beginning with a '%')
- No support for recursive subroutines
- And yes, Larry does say that Perl "actually stands for Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister, but don't tell anyone I said that." Oh. Oops.
Oh, and when you download the package and untar it all into a directory, it won't work out of the box. Here's some instructions on how to make it work on Red Hat Linux system. First, untar it all into one big folder. Then, run
./Configure and just press Enter. When 'make depend' has run, you need to edit the Makefile. Open the Makefile up in your text editor and get rid of all the lines containing either '<built-in>' or '<command line>'. Then you should be able to just do 'make' and you now have a copy of Perl 1.0 as ./perl in the current directory. -
More examples of such RL-to-music software.
This webpage has a good deal more information on entire categories of them. It gets pretty technical, so it's probably only for those who already have some interest in electronic music.

Re:S....
I'm currently trying to make some stop-motion films using the model sets, but it's tedious work and I've only finished a few...
I've got a few online (in mpg format) at my site. Please don't all click at once you will kill my poor server! -
Paws in chess
" and for my salvo in this war, though I can not comment of the syntax of the referring article, paws in chess can move in a "L" pattern"
You got me there! Please see this link for more "paws in chess". The move (more of an up-one over-one than a "L") is called "en passant" by the way.
I should have referred to castling bishops instead. -
Similarities with MS Reader
This reminds me of what's happened with Microsoft's Reader - although the significant difference there is that (after 6 months) they did actually bother to try to patch the hole (Convert LIT version 1.2 does not work with the updated version of Reader). They didn't do a particularly good job though, and so a few days later Convert LIT 1.4 was released.

+++'bout SCUMM
Being very fond of those old Lucas Art games, i though giving away a few links about the SCUMM VM may be interresting for other
/.ers.
- The SCUMM VM (already on /. here (Linux SCUMM Interpreter), and here (Lucas Confuses ScummVM With Abandonware).
- The SCUMM Bar, sadly down untill mid-july (but not closed!), is a reference on the genre, with nice interviews with the original developpers of the first games.
- The International House of Mojo
- WWHS
- The Big Whoop Fairground (Monkey Island)
- The Legend of Mokey Island
Well from there you can find tons of links to fan sites...
Actually Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders was my first introduction to the genre when i was around 13, on a now old C64. This game was really crazy and got me so addicted that it was a reason for my parents to buy me a english/french dictionnary. There's a few projects from fans for a follow-up:
- Zak McKracken
- Zak McKracken and the Alien Rockstar
- Zak McKracken Between Time and Space
Finally some of you may also want to have a look to the news groups alt.games.lucas-art.*
have fun! -
Convert LIT updated to version 1.4
I'm happy to announce that there's now a new version of Convert LIT which is compatible with the updated version of Microsoft Reader. You can find it on our website here.

Re:visually scan LP
Why is no-one producing no-contact turntables with semiconductor lasers? Is it just that vinyl is too small a market now?
Finial used to do one, but it now seems to have been bought up by a Japanese company, and is still available.
I just found an interesting page on it here.Interestingly gramophone technology has made its way into CD transports - see here and here.

After reading this article I did a little research on blocking the IP ranges of these p2p police, and found an app named peerguardian that SUPPOSEDLY blocks the ranges. (Please note the "supposedly", I don't know that this thing really works)

Re:source code?
Hey,
I doubt that the source code has been made available to "Dan Jackson".
Unless one goes to the webpage of Dan Jackson Software and download:
Clit source - The source code for clit and associated library. This should compile cleanly on linux and BSD, and should be easily portable. The source code is released under the GPL.

Re:The Name
"I agree that it is unfortunate that he didn't make the source available"
Uhm.. Did you look at the guy's page?
Right below the compiled version download is the source download.. hell, he even recommends that you download the source rather than the precomp version.
page is at:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/
in case you didn't see it elsewhere -
Source code is out
Okay, I've been getting lots of emails telling me the source and binary links on the site are 404, I know this, we were having some last minute trouble with the binary. Since so many people have asked for the source code, we've put it up anyway, but please be aware that you may have trouble compiling it under Windows. In case anybody forgot the site URL, it is http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/. Have at it.
-
Re:...does this matter?
but he doesn't even publish the source code, much less explain how it works. Does this even deserve our attention as a hack?
Somebody forgot to read the article. The source is at: http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/openclit .tar.bz2 and claims to be GPL. -
Re:Code can be downloaded here
Unfortunately, the download is not code, but a binary.
Hmm...what, then, is this?
Clit source - The source code for clit and associated library. This should compile cleanly on linux and BSD, and should be easily portable. The source code is released under the GPL.
OTOH, both links (source and binary) are currently 404...
-
It IS open source
I don't know which pages you guys are looking at but at this site http://members.lycos.co.uk/hostintheshell/, at the very bottom there's a link to both the compiled executable and the source. And it says, "This should compile cleanly on linux and BSD, and should be easily portable. The source code is released under the GPL."

some have claimed that the macro posted here broke lit a long time ago, not so. It only worked on unprotected lits (if copy/paste was disabled in the reader, it wouldn't work.
This is better in the sense that it will work with secure lits that have copy disabled. Also it retains all formatting (exporting to html) while the previous script could only capture text (and poorly at that)
The one major limitation is that you must be able to view the lit on your computer. If your copy of ms reader can't open the file, neither can this program -

Re: Familiar
but this software is produced by a foreign national in his own country (UK)
I'm not sure about that. Although he claims to have (re)written parts of the code,
- His page is only about this very program AND
- He writes:
One of the people I met while MUD'ing suggested that since I live in the UK, I could act as an agent for programmers who wish to remain anonymous but still want to release their software. I thought this would be a good idea and so this website came into existence...
IMHO this program originated in the US, was exported to the UK, changed, and (re)published.
P.S.: Of what

Non-American users are redirected
Note that the link to www.hotbot.com in the article redirects non-American users to the version for the country near them, and the versions of Hotbot for different countries don't include the meta-search feature. For example, here in the Netherlands, I'm redirected to www.hotbot.lycos.co.uk. Non-American users who want to see the search engine reviewed here should go directly to www.hotbot.lycos.com.

Re:Hah!
As if Stan Lee were just some burger flipper, instead of the person who created the character that they made $400 millions dollars from.
According to the very confused records of the IMDB, the film made $800-million worldwide. (Not counting video & merchandising.) Why is only the in-USA figure the only one that anyone ever talks about? Does the other $400-million simply not exist? Is it not as green? Is it not a measure of greater success? Check a map! There is more land in the world besides the USA. -

Maybe the file servers stayed up, but 'trouting' may have needed a little shot in the ass.

Re:Patenting something already inventedI am not disputing that. I am saying that Santos-Dumont had a much better attitude by sharing what he did, and that served better the world than the Wright brothers secret, proprietary attitude.
OK. I see what you are saying. The problem is that Santos Dumont did not make any fundamental breakthroughs. In fact, according to this page the Demoiselles, which first flew in 1907, did not have ailerons, or wing warping. Just rudder and elevator.
Also, patents should be always RAND. They should reward the inventor, not the manufacturer or distributor.
That sounds reasonable. The problem is that without exclusive manufacture and distribution how can one profit from an invention? Maybe there should be a mandatory fee for the inventor from anyone using the invention? Except that "using" cannot be as clearly defined as we'd like. Wrights thought Curtiss was using their invention, and Curtiss thought he didn't.
Software, processes and methods aren't in the original definition of patents, and have proved to be unmitigated evil.
I tend to agree with you on software patents.

Re:Delightfuly recursive! The British lycos site (http://www.lycos.co.uk/ ) doesn't do this. It simply gives a list of yahoo pages.
Attempting to access the US version of Lycos from where I am automatically re-routes me to the UK & Ireland site. If I want to get to Lycos.com then I have to use Anonymizer. Perhaps I don't want to use their site in the UK - it's not their place to decide. I don't like having choices made for me.
And it's for that reason that I don't use Lycos.
-- -
Re:Whatever happened to Lycos?
You're right.
I, for one, never need go to http://www.lycos.co.uk/ (where the blasted thing redirects me to - talk about wasting bandwidth with DNS lookups), simply because there's nothing of any interest on there.
OTOH, I do prefer to use FTPSearch and MP3search, both of which are not expressly linked off the front page.
To me, it says it all that the actual web-searching bit has been reduced to a tiny box at the top of the page.
On the positive side, I noticed the other day that it seems to have turned into a bit of a portal: the question is, too little, too late? -
Re:Delightfuly recursive!
The British lycos site ( http://www.lycos.co.uk/ ) doesn't do this. It simply gives a list of yahoo pages. I didn't notice the actual yahoo front page on the list though.
If this "mistake" gets corrected in the next day or so, we'll know they read /. though.
