Ya'll are forgetting some of the other free services Apple's been offering that will no longer be free..and they're so cool I think I might just pay. What am I talking about? APPLICATION INTEGRATION. Here's one simple example... 1. The fact that in iPhoto, I can select a bunch of picures and hit "Homepage" and in 3 minutes have a great looking, thumbnailed picture page. Unbelievably easy, and so much less of a hassle than doing it by hand. For anyone who hasn't seen this in action... Check this out It's stuff like that that WOWS the windoze people I show it to, and I think it (at least that particular example) might be worth some of my hard earned money. And anyway, I tend to take better advantage of things I pay for.

You could be right - take a look at the '.Mac - FAQ' title graphic. Notice the poor font quality - especially the 'M' - this looks like someone has taken the Garamond font and condensed it ~80% to get something similar to Apple Garamond.

Also take a look at the page source: it's very sparse; no comments etc. Now take look at the HTML source of an Apple Press Release notice all the comments, META tags, DOCTYPE et al. I guess we won't know for sure until Jobs speaks but this announcement should be taken with caution for now.

price isn't everything. the memory and airport upgrades on the ibook are no problem -- flip up the keyboard and plug 'em right in -- but upgrading the drive is like pulling a mouthful of teeth. Really, there are 30 screws to be removed -- phillips and flatheads and torx of multiple sizes. You can see a detailed walkthrough with all the gory details here.

When I bought my ibook from the local apple retailer (not an "Apple Store" but a fully authorized service center) they told me that if I wanted a bigger HD I'd have to buy the ibook bto online -- their techs spent so much time getting in and out of the ibooks, and keeping track of all the parts, that it's just not cost-effective for them.

i figured the 20 gig drive was enough -- there's always external storage and i wanted to walk out with it. :)

I've been DJing for nine years, and have covered the progression of house music during that span. (Hope y'all have RealPlayer) Everything from early Chicago House to Disco House to DEEP House to Booty/Ghetto House to Hard Techno House. Oh yeah, and some Tech-Step Jungle.

Yeah, the return of the Cube would be a real coup, if the price were down near $1000 this time. The Switch campaign might be tugging at some hearts and minds, but it hits a brick wall where the wallet is concerned.

1. price drop and/or 17" LCD on the iMac. The fascination has worn off; it's too expensive for a low-mid consumer PC.
2. DDR in the PowerMac. Whatever problems Motorola has in the megahertz department, memory bandwidth is the real limiting factor right now.
3. a cheap expandable desktop, aka the PowerMac G4 LC. I need a new home machine this fall, and I can't afford $1300 for a base-model G4.

Okay looks like I assumed wrong (you don't all know). You can activate your /etc/hosts file by setting /locations/lookupd/hosts/LookupOrder -> ( CacheAgent, FFAgent, NIAgent, YPAgent, DNSAgent, NILAgent ) in netinfo.

We pay for a CD and rip it to our HDs. We share it online while we're surfing. User X decides to download "Puppy Cum" from my computer. I am not personally breaking copyright, because I paid for that song. (well, actually, me and my friend Joe wrote it, but whatever)
User X is using my bandwidth. Bandwidth that companies like AOL and Comcast are going to start charging me extra for. So not only am I NOT making a profit, I'm actually PAYING somewhat to let other people download my music.
I can sure see how companies would think this is just as bad as buying a high-capacity burner setup and color copying the covers @ Kinko's and selling the bogus copies on the streets of any city in America for $5.
This gets especially ludicrous for dial-up users. It can take HOURS to get ONE SONG... this entire initiative is overblown and a gross overreaction to the fact that our economy isn't doing so hot, people are tightening their belts, or buying more booze, who knows, but they're not buying the crap that the Big Five want to sell us.

With iPhoto it's as easy to make an online album as it is to make a coffee table book as it is to get prints from Kodak. And the prints I got back from Kodak were very, very good. I sent 10 images shot with an Epson PhotoPC 3100Z, without cropping, without adjustments of any kind. When they came back they were indistinguishable from film shots. I even ran them by two professional photographers I know who were very impressed as well. (To see some jpgs of the digitals I shot go here. Warning: I'm not a good photographer!)

I paid $0.49 per 4x6. This seemed quite steep to me before I realized that I had the privelage of only sending photos that I already knew were print-worthy. Plus I had a chance to crop and color-correct them if I wished. When you figure it that way, it's not so outrageous. The prices for going from digital to photo paper printed are as follows:

Very well. Open your wallet. Spread the notes section open - just peek inside. Don't take any of the money out of your wallet - don't even pull the corners out to read the numbers. Just by looking at the notes, lying there in their sessile state, count how much you have in your wallet. Even better, locate one of the three $50 notes you have in your wallet, amongst the $5, two $20 and a stack of receipts - without leafing through the notes, trying to read the "50" in low light.

This is what my notes look like in my wallet.

It's much easier to count money in your wallet by looking at the coloured edges, than by fingering through and looking for the numbers. Especially in a crowd, where you don't necessarily want to take the notes out of the wallet for everyone to see.

Even better, it's practically impossible to confuse an Australian note with a shopping receipt or voucher. Coloured notes also aids the 40% of adults who are illiterate (you don't have to be able to read to know that a yellow Australian note is $50). Admittedly, Australian notes don't have Braille on them. That's cool - I might have to move to Canada just because of the cool currency :)

Change the colour of your money. It's about convenience, accessibility and security, not just aesthetics.

It's not yet easy to manually remap keys in OSX, (many do with XDarwin) but you can do it by text-editing the appropriate xmodmap file you're using (Warning: the DMCA may seriously repercussions if you live in the US and try to do this... check out the scary disclaimer on this how-to for remapping keys with XDarwin!!) This really should be something user-changeable in the System Prefs itself, under "Keyboard" and hopefully will be in Jaguar or not too long after.

In OSX, you could manually re-map the modmap file for the appropriate keymap you want to change out of the list of keymaps in the /System/Library/Keyboards/ directory (pick yours, though I think there are even more now with 10.1.5):

But of course, there's will soon be an easier way if you don't want to muck about. Michael Baltak's GPL'd DoubleCommand Deluxe, under development and hopefully to be released soon should offer a good amount of flexibility in custom keymapping for free. Or, to kill the bug with a sledgehammer you could get a macro utility like Quickeys from CE Software and map the Caps Lock key to trigger a one-key "shortcut" of your choosing (ie: map it to another key)

I wouldn't worry too much about paying to upgrade the OS to Jaguar, Apple so far has been fairly good about this sort of stuff. You could also wait a few months until Jaguar comes out and you might not need a keymapping utility at all, if you can bear to wait.

I think it's too soon to measure the effectiveness of Apple's "Real People" campaign, since it's only been about a week so far.

On the other hand, the endorsements seem to be genuine. Check out Aaron Adams' extensive writeup on his computing experiences (warning: lots of geek cred!) and how he ended up in an Apple commercial.

This is why you need to be able to write code on paper.

But I don't write code well at all on paper. I can design code in my head or on a white-board, but to actually write the code, I need to be at a computer just as I would imagine that many composers need to be at a piano.

It's most likely a mod. I'm not sure about the exact procedure but I imagine it's not too different from the ibook method

It's just a bunch of quotes from Mac magazines and from Apple saying how great Macs are and how you can't compare the "computing experience" between Macs and Windows (doesn't even mention Linux or other operating systems, and it's based on really old and crappy PCs).

So, since Macs give you such a "great experience", they're "60% better", whatever that means.

Yea, I did it. I just finished posting the pictures to my Mac.com website.

Hopefully later, I'll add a bit of commentary on what time each photo was taken (you can look at the EXIF data for that information). I'm located in Southern California (San Diego) and all pictures were taken with my Cannon Powershot S30 digital Camera through a set of sun-watching glasses I picked up at the local astronomy store.

It's totally possible to create great looking tableless, liquid, three-column layout using CSS.

These sites have different tutorials for various column combinations and even backwards compatibility with Netscape 4.

The beauty of not using tables is that you're seperating structure from presentation. Basically, around some content, you specify what it is (structure). In the case of Slashdot's side navigation, in the XHTML/HTML you'd might surround the content with a DIV tag and give it an id/class of "sidenavigation".

With tables, you're already forced to predetermine that you want to use it on the left column when you mark up the whole table in TD and TR tags.

So how's CSS better than tables? Well, once you've defined the structure in XHTML/HTML, you can use CSS to define the presentation to say, I want anything tagged as a "sidenavigation" to be a vertical box on the left side that's X pixels wide.

This presentation can be easily be altered by changing the CSS. You can tell CSS to move things to the right, maybe center it or whatever. And you can define a CSS specifically for handhelds. You can tell it to hide data, change font sizes, redefine colors, or anything you want. For the sight-impared, you could define the CSS to display it all in a simple, column-less layout. And since you have not predetermined the presentation in the HTML, the user could have defined their own stylesheets to override your CSS to present the content in the way they want it.

With HTML and CSS (and also the XML and XSLT recommendations), websites can be so much more flexible.

First laptop mod? Not by a long shot, and it's a Mac to boot.

I find that ASM is useful in hiding/showing running applications, just like the Application Menu in classic used to do, and it is GPL which is nice. Additionally it allows one to go back to the classic windowning mode of bringing all application windows to the front if that is what you like rather than Mac OS X's default mode of treating each window seperately which I have difficulty getting used to.

For my last system, I ended up using steel wire cubical closet shelving instead of a case. These things come in squares which can be joined together with plastic junctions. I opted to join them with plastic "zipper" ties instead, much neater. The shelf units are slightly larger than an AT mobo, and have several advantages:

- No closed case = minimal cooling required.
- Components bolt on to the sides of the case directly with plastic eyelet connectors. No hard drive bays.
- Cheap. 6 shelf squares per cube, 12 squares per pack, under $20.
- Can be broken down and re-purposed for storing socks and underwear.

Ugly as hell, but who cares?

Audiogalaxy does not contain spyware, nor does it require the use of spyware. The "official" audiogalaxy client however, does contain spyware, but only from version .609 and on. I use .608W for instance. It is 100% functional, and contains no spyware. Here is a download link. Furthermore, audiogalaxy is a pretty much open protocol. There are a number of 3rd party clients, for various operating system, which are spyware/adware free. Some are AGStream, OpenAG, and Sputnix. Quit complaining if you are too lazy to use google and/or download another client, so you can get free mp3s without the company making any money.

In addition, I see the same jobs being posted over and over. I know there are qualified people to fill these positions.... is this all a charade?
