Secure programmingOne of the most common security problems is buffer overflows; the way I worked around this was to write a special string library where the strings had meta data; including the maxiumum length a given string could have.
One of the problems with secure programming is the inertia in the computer industry; most of the operating systems in widespread use today (The *nix clones and DOS derivitives, these days) we developed in a time when security did not matter; *nix has a crude root-or-not security model and MS-DOS has no conception of security at all.
Personally, I think the solution is a model which has a real security model, such as EROS. The "audit the code so that it is perfect code without bugs" approach to security does not always work, even with OpenBSD.

Then we begin to snot each other's spunk and whip each other's pudgy asses with riding crops and chains until our pale, white geek bodies are exhausted and soaked in stinking sweat from the hours of passionate, homosexual revelry.

Re:Monocultures contribute to the problem
Monocultures like this in the biolgical world are known to be extrememly vulnerable to attacks from (biological) viruses and parasites, and it's no less true with computers.
Try telling RMS who wants everyone to use his GNU system.
sendmail
Postfix is a widely used alternative, and it's also a lot leaner and more secure than sendmail, while offering almost the same functionality, and fewer configuration hassles.(no, i won't mention qmail here because DJ Bernstein is a prick and just fucking annoying.). the sendmail monoculture will soon cease to exist. -

Re:Almostand if your on a switched network ? surely you wouldn't recieve any relevant traffic ?
You would initially just see broadcast traffic, and that gives you some IP information to get started from. You could then send a continuous stream of forged packet to the switch pretending to be from MAC addresses you can see. Depending on the switch you may be able to force it to fail and start acting as a hub, or receive packets intended for the legitimate hosts you are faking.
It's a technique known as ARP spoofing, for which there are plenty of tools such as Dugsong's DSniff suite. Get Ethereal as well, capture some packets and see what you can derive about the network - it should be quite a lot. Add a packet generator into the mix and, well, the sky's the limit really. I should also point out that you can very easily break the law with these tools; be careful what you do and where...

3ware Escalade = 420 gigs of RAID5 for $1100
3ware 6800 Escalade IDE RAID is working great, and it's only $350 or so.
It's a PCI card with *8* IDE drive slots, which you can configure in a RAID 5 array for huge, failsafe backups.
I've got 8 60-gig IDE drives on it, in a RAID 5 array. Gives aboout 420 gigs. Shows up as a SCSI device in OpenBSD. Works great with Linux.
Churning away wonderfully.
I've backed-up 200 gigs of files on it so far.
420 gigs of RAID5 storage = $1100 USD. ($300 for the card. $800 for 8 60-gig drives.)
Here's my post on the OpenBSD list about it -
Re:Expect all you want....Lemme guess - W2K laptop with Personal Web Server installed? When Nimda hit, we did a count of any IIS installs, including W2K clients and checked them - one by one. Luckily we have no need for IIS and weren't running it.
Nimda is still running around out there and probably will for some time. After all, when tens of thousands of hosts are infected, you can expect some to remain undiscovered (admin must be under a rock somewhere, tho.)

NASA was wise to have farmed it out for competing bids from other groups. And, in fact, the other groups are able to do at least as much (probably more) for less than JPL could. So calling it a 'bastard stepchild' seems unnecessarily derisive to me.
The 2006 launch date is not critical. One of the two competing team leaders has worked out that with Venus gravity assists, we could send a probe to Pluto in any given year. Furthermore, in reviewing the recent papers on the topic, he's determined that it is quite unlikely that the atmosphere will freeze out as was predicted a decade or two ago. - Cool (Score:0, Offtopic)

Writing with a followup to the Slashdot post titled,

having been mooted here recently, I though I'd alert readers to another
such project. The HETE-2
satellite recently
located a cosmic gamma-ray burst precisely enough that (with a lot
of help from friends) an afterglow was detected, identifying its source.
HETE-2 cost $26 million, only 1/3 of what a "small" scientific satellite
normally costs.
A lot of commercial "off the shelf" technology went into HETE. Nothing
from Radio Shack, but there are quite a few parts from Digi-Key onboard.
You can't save money by using cheap parts (but you *can* save money by
using easily obtainable parts), and you can't achieve reliability by
using expensive parts (but you *can* help reliability by using the parts
best suited for your application). The radical thing about HETE's parts
selection was that it considered parts in the application context (as
one would do in a normal engineering process), rather than restricting
selection to a QPL assembled to meet irrelevant requirements.
The real trick to keeping costs down is to do the job with as small a
team as possible in the minimum time possible. Rather than employing a
large team of specialists, HETE's scientific investigators did much of
the engineering and technical work. A small, carefully selected
engineering team filled in the knowledge gaps."

Trick or Treat: Slashdot and the Cesium OS hoax!
Well, looks like Timothy from Slashdot's own "call-the-next-one-nitrogen dept." was easily fooled into posting an article on Slant-six about MIT's soon to be released "Cesium OS!" The only problem is there is no such thing! And over 2 hours later the Slashdot story hasn't been updated. Considering that the Cesium OS "treat" is vaperware, I guess Slashdot took the "trick" instead.

The Get Timothy Lord Laid Appeal
Dear Reader,
I wish to bring to your attention an deplorable situation which cannot be allowed to continue. For too many years, Timothy Lord has been denied womanly affection. Of all the slashdot editors, I feel that he is the least undeserving of feminine attention, and yet, it seems that he suffers the most for the lack of it. His entry on the authors page is as follows:
" If you know (or are) a smart, cute, wonderful single woman who likes aloud reading and laughing, please let me know. Substantial Reward, references available, have own car."
I know we've all read his strangely formal plea, and felt in our souls the aching need he feels in his balls, but have any of us yet responded to this cry for help? I know there must be at least one smart, cute, single woman who reads this page. Unlike Timothy, many of us are blessed with the friendship of women who fit this description. And I know we'd all like to help out.
Timothy is currently the most prolific author of slashdot. He is the only editor who has not abandoned his commitment to the slashdot readers in order to implement lameness filters that don't work and moderate posts "for the good of the readers."
Timothy is slashdot's last honourable man.
Is it right to keep his dick on ice like this? No, I didn't think so. He's a sweet guy. Why are you torturing him? What's wrong with you? Don't you have a heart?!
Despite his sick dreams about Mena Suvari, I feel that Timothy is as perfect a gentleman you could hope to meet. If my instincts aren't recommendation enough, here's an artist's impression of what Tim would look like just after you put your keys on his forehead, prior to making him eat your ass. He cooks, too.
So how can you help?
- Are you an attractive young woman or sufficiently effeminate man. who lives in or near Tennessee? Do you want to make your life mean something? Why not send Tim and email and offer to service him? Don't forget to let us know, so we can all thank and respect you.
- Do you know a woman of such low moral fibre that she would willingly offer herself for sex to a man she's never met? Want to pimp her to Tim? Email Tim, and reply here, so we can give you props, jigga-man.
- Do you have Timothy's email address? I don't. Help us out. I'm guessing timothy@slashdot.org probably works.
- Got some advice for the unloved? Help a brother out. Post it here.
- If all else fails: If we can't put Tim in a warm bed with a willing female, we can at least put him in a seedy motel bed with a disinterested but well-remunerated whore. Help Tim and contribute to the prostitution industry of Tennessee. Pledge your donation below.
Help in any way you can. Time is short. For all I know, Tim has never felt the love of a good woman. I'm pretty sure if you make it to 28 without getting laid at least once, your dick falls off in disgust. Plus, he's contemplating alternative lifestyles.

P.S. If this appeal meets with reasonable success, we'll be going ahead with some more ambitious projects. Look forward to seeing The Get CowboyNeal Blowed Appeal and The Get Michael Sims Iced Appeal.
Some unrelated notes: Why is there an indigo girls song on the censorware page? Is Sims trying to tell us he's a lesbian?
I wanted to use these pictures of Nitrozac in this letter, but couldn't think of a good way to include them. Hopefully someone will find a use for them:

Re:"If you don't lose one..."
There's quite a difference between "their next flight could be their last" (emphasis added) and "if you don't lose at least one during testing, you aren't pushing hard enough" (again, EA). The former means that the job is risky, the latter, suicidal (that is, I interpret his meaning to be, "If one aircraft isn't lost, then we're not being risky enough").
Other notes:
1) I wasn't responding to Timothy, rather HobbySpacer, the article's submitter. At least, that's how the quotes lead me to read it.
2) I don't think that this person presumed that this statement was only meant for unmanned flights; the link included in this comment was for the X-15, which did have a fatal disintigration, as memorialized in the link he gave.
3) I didn't mean to suggest that I thought this vehicle was manned. I was responding to his comment about the X-15.
Sorry if I ruffled any feathers; I guess I wasn't sufficiently clear. -
Re:"If you don't lose one..."
I am (obviously) not T, but I feel that in his defense I must say that it is obvious to me that he was more speaking of non-manned prototypes. The blurb was not very descriptive, but the picture certainly does give the impression of a remotely controlled vehicle. Losing human life (even if much can be learned from the event) is a tragedy. I don't think that anyone will dispute that (baring lawyer jokes).

How can you have SMART tags without context?
Another problem with this whole approach to hyperlinking is the lack of context. Since the SmartTag parsing engine is simply doing a keyword search, how accurate can those links really be once you drift away from things like proper nouns (Microsoft, Ford, Tupperware, Scientology, etc.)? But can it tell the whether I want to fold an origami crane or the fact that they'll need a crane to pick the broken ruins up again. These are the kind of smart tags that could be potentially useful. Anything less is really just advertising.

Hooray!
Looks like someone from monkey.org (big OpenBSD lovers) is starting up a new project. If it follows in the history of other OpenBSD alternatives it will be about 30 times better than the original and have some cute Blowfish/Daemon shirt. Damn OpenBSD people! They're beating the other BSD's simply through how cool their t-shirts are!

reality check time
Joe Average User lets his ISP deal with the spam issue -- filtering, etc. -- and the costs of such services are passed along to him.
So what makes you think ISP's would want spam eliminated if this were the case. Rather they'd look forward to making more money at any cost (remember their a business not your friends) Its the ISP's faults from the get go, since they should be responsible to set up their networks free from the ability of having users send spam via way of "spoofing" or other methods
used by spammers. Set up their networks correctly with the proper outgoing and incoming filters.
If spam was effectively eliminated, either through a technological or legislative solution, these costs would disappear, and either ISPs could pass along the savings to the customer.
Uh... Think about what your saying here. Create a "one rule fits all" situation which would create more chaos then it would help. Why should the US follow laws created in West Bubblefuck and vice versa? Then what? I think you should look into a cybercrime bill the EU is trying to pass which is right along the lines of this... Meaning officials down with the cybercrime law would be able to serve a warrant in their country and have another country honor that warrant. Don't you see the possible abuse of ideas such as yours?

Fun links 4 u!
While we're waiting for the article to come back, take a look at this site about p2p, this article with statistics on gnutella and links, and of course this list of p2p clients. There might be some interesting things in this slashdot article. And yes I am a filthy karma whore, and no I have no shame whatsoever.

Re:RDS
Forgot to mention this last night... RDS is also a HUGE security hole on ColdFusion based systems and Should not be used in a production evironment. For the happy hackers out there RDS runs over port 80, listening for a username and password to authenticate. the default username unless the site is using Advanced Security services is 'ra' (short for remote administrator). So then with a tool like dsniff, you can go and grab the password and be on your way. What you probably don't realize, is that once you have the password you have the equivalent to root on a win box (not sure about linux) all drive letters are available, and you can edit, delete, modify _any_ system file at will. Learned about this from the training people at FigLeaf in DC

Re:Insecure? Compared to what?
Well, you can check the small slide show presentation at dsniff for starters. It was mentioned (along with a bunch of others) not too long ago in the "WEP Isn't Secure" thingy here on Slashdot a week or so ago...

Re:NFS+ and RPC-GSSAPI
There's some work on secure RPC and NFS for Linux and OpenBSD. Take a look at Dug Song's project list and the UMich NFSv4 project. Not sure how far these have progressed, the NFSv4 page at least seems somewhat out of date, but interested parties might still find them useful.

Re:Er...switched networks are not necessarily any safer than networks based around hubs. check out dug song's dsniff package to see just how vulnerable switched networks can be.
anytime you communicate with anything other than yourself, the Trust issue comes into play.

Direct link and my experiences
Some information about their analysis is available.
Personally, I wasn't counting on WEP anyway, which is why I didn't bother buying the Lucent Gold cards. I just wish IPsec were more common, so that I wouldn't have to tunnel quite so much through ssh.
Of course, then there are unencrypted wireless networks like the ones at USENIX. Dug Song's presentation on dsniff was a big hit; look for the "Passwords Found on a Wireless Network" paper. (PostScript only, sorry.)

Timothy doesn't read Slashdot
Posted by timothy on 04:20 AM April 1st, 2001
from the at-least-read-the-front-page dept.
Frac writes: "It seems rather obvious that timothy doesn't read Slashdot, considering that the an article still on the main page mentions the exact same news." Interesting stuff. And in other news, there are now proton polymer batteries available, results from ICANN elections, and a really interesting article at ZDNET on reverse-engineering. -
Re:Not really . . ..
with the switch from shared to switched band Local Area Networks snooping is almost impossible anymore
That should read, snooping by "unauthorized people." Do you really want your non-network-admin types sniffing your network?
On Cisco equipment, monitoring all traffic types is only possible if you have enable priveleges.
As it should be, although just because you're using a switch doesn't mean an unprivleged user can't see all traffic... See
http://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/dsniff/
Bosses usually dont and if they do they wouldnt know how to set up the nescessary listening apps (tcp, udp)
Since when do 'bosses' do it themselves anyway? They just have the people that know how do it...
Not to blow my cover but LAN admins usually can snoop quite well because of their access rights and know-how
Uh.. In my position, snooping is encouraged, as a troubleshooting and management tool, and also for ... snooping.
Weve fired two people from telecomm at my University for just such intrusions
What, because they were LAN admins and were snooping?
That's harsh...
