Re:The feature that Mozilla is still missing...
This can happen for two reasons.
(1) the server uses content-disposition: attachment. In this case, the server is arguably telling the browser "do not open this file automatically". I'm not sure why Firefox cares that the server says that, though. See bug 236541.
(2) the server uses content-type: application/octet-stream. In this case, I think it's a browser bug. I'm not sure this still happens.
You might be able to tell which it is using web-sniffer.net or LiveHTTPHeaders. -
Fasterfox
You may want to check out Fasterfox. It blocks some pop-ups Firefox doesn't by default.
-
It's called Flashblock
That is not a 'popup', it is a flash ad.
Install Flashblock. Use it for a week and you will not know how you lived without it.

How I solved this problem
IE View is a Firefox extension for Windows that opens the current page in IE. It usually solves the "last site" problem, when all arguments contrary to Firefox have been shortened to "But I must use site xyz and Firefox breaks it" (still a fairly common situation specially with Internet banking applications).
-
Re:Whatever
Once in a while, on a website with a flash banner ad, I'll firefox taking up 35% of my cpu.
One word: Flashblock
Here endeth the lesson. -
Re:WhateverI haven't experienced much instability with Firefox. There are still a few websites where it reliably crashes (I try to report those when I come across them), but generally it's quite solid. Yes, Flash tends to be fucked up - I use Flashblock to selectively enable it, which helps a lot. Most Flash use is advertising or irrelevant (rotating headlines and similar shit), so I'm very glad to have it disabled by default.
I'm not sure to what extent Firefox is to blame for how Flash runs; I wouldn't be surprised if, being proprietary software, the plugin didn't get much priority, or if fixing integration issues was difficult. I don't know if IE handles Flash any better, but given that IE is still very much the dominant browser, it wouldn't surprise me if Macromedia heavily customized Flash for it. I guess the main reason there's no popular open source Flash engine is that people place similar hopes in SVG. What I've seen of SVG in Firefox 1.5 looks promising for sure.
I believe there are a few extensions which seriously affect stability, performance and memory usage. If you use a lot of extensions, check the comments on the addons site. Chances are one of them has a memory leak. Should extensions be able to affect the browser in that way? No, but I'm not sure it can be done differently.
The fundamental problem with the extension approach (as opposed to a monolithic browser) is that when you have lots of modules with different maintainers, module quality can be quite low, which can affect the combined whole. It might be a good idea for Mozilla to "officially" provide a home for some extensions (including a quality review process), similar to the way the KDE project integrates mature applications.
I do believe that Firefox, due to its surrounding hype, is faced with a lot of pressure to innovate from version to version, and that this pressure can take energy and resources away from integration and consolidation. If it becomes too much of a problem, we'll see a very, very small fork of Firefox being hyped up, and Firefox becomes the new Mozilla.

You've gotta check out IE Tab!
This is an extension I found a few days ago, and though YMMV in the few days I've been using it it works pretty damned well (in the latest 1.5 RC to boot!) Enjoy!

Re:Pop-unders in Firefox
Anyone knows a solution to this (besides turning off Flash and Javascript)?
- Install FlashBlock -- no need to fully disable Flash.
- Open up your about:config and add a new value as per this page -- prevents plugin popups.
I think I've seen only one popup-ad in the last 3 months.
-
Re:resistant popups
FlashBlock is the solution! In their own words, Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content.

catch up and be open (SIP standard compliant)
VoIP not only needs to catch up but also be open like email, and unlike the divided IM space.
Unfortunately Skype is not the application which connects to an open network.
Only applications like Gizmo http://www.gizmoproject.com/ and many other ones (which I don't use) connect to the International Standard-compliant Protocol known as SIP.
If you want voice chat (VoIP) on Linux then you have a good selection too (I don't know which are SIP compliant and which are not though):

Popups from flash embedded objects are not blocked. There is a preference in mozilla's firefox extension, however, that allows you to block them.

[blockquote]The current GDP of Vietnam is about $300.[/blockquote] Actually, it's $227,200,000,000 but probably about $0 goes into private hands (unless you consider the top executive hands' private) so your point is taken.

Tribes 1 & 2
Starsiege: Tribes and its sequel Tribes 2 in my opinon, are two of the best online FPS titles ever.
Tribes 1 would have recieved several GoTY awards, but it was overshadowed by Half-Life. Tribes 2's release was plagued by lots of bugs and patches, and many of the T1 vets didn't like the "new stuff".
Both games were also very easily modded, (there was amazing freedom and ease, but secure so there was almost no hacking) and I actually started learning how to program by modding and tweaking a server I ran off my home connection. It was also made for 56k connections, so bandwidth usage was low. (I ran a server for three years without my ISP caring) I played Tribes 2 for a long time, but then high school came along - last time I checked, there were only about 60 servers left, and only a few actually had people playing.
