I dunno, if some of the worst of the current political trends continue, we'll end up being the Vorlons instead.
Vorlons? More like Vogons. You know, the fat, bureaucratic bullies who write horrible emo poetry and eventually demolished the Earth in order to build a useless bypass.

Re:Not necessarily in order...
I used to check out http://freshmeat.net/ almost daily, but that was when I was only a few years into Linux and still on an endless search for software that did different things, and at the time it seemed simpler to just wait and see what came up on fm every day (you could easily tell how active things were that way, too). Speaking of fm---does anyone have a copy of that old butchered-meat logo fm used to have, waaaay back, before the beginning of the fm II theme?
About weekly, I'll check out http://amasci.com/ (amateur science and electricity stuff), http://en.wikipedia.org/ (duh), http://www.cray-cyber.org/ (free supercomputer access), http://www.hpcalc.org/ (HP48/49/etc calculator stuff), etc., to check for new stuff. I'll check my http://facebook.com/ and http://myspace.com/orangesquid (shuddup) messages about weekly. From time to time I might browse http://www.amazing1.com/ (catalog which has Tesla coils and stuff, though they're not actually the best place for parts/kits/devices) or search for scientific equipment or old unix systems on http://www.ebay.com/ (see the Used SGI Buying Guide FAQ, etc).
I also check up on some of my friends via http://os.livejournal.com/friends every few days.
Lately I've been choosing a new section on http://scitoys.com/ to read every few days. Every few weeks, I'll usually find a different information-type site to read through gradually, or pick a topic to research on wikipedia. -

HELP SAVE NET RADIO IN THE US..

Help Keep Internet Radio Online
Whats Happening
On Friday March 2nd 2007, the Copyright Royalty Board announced new royalty rates for Internet Radio stations. The rates are retroactive to January of 2006.
The new rates are far higher than any industry experts expected. In fact, if they remain unchanged, bankruptcy looms for many online radio stations.
The new rates essentially levy a tax of $0.0011 per performance. Now, that doesn't sound bad does it. But consider this. Each hour, the average radio station plays 16 songs. So that's about 1.76c per hour, per listener. A station with 500 listener average would be hit with fees of $211 per day, $6,336 a month or $76,000 a year.
This amount of money is beyond the resources of all but the very wealthiest of corporations. Many of the internet radio stations are run by enthusiasts and hobbyists. These small stations are the ones bringing new music, and old favorites to you every day. Music you can't hear on corporate-owned terrestrial stations.
Could this be the day the music died?
What can you do?
If you enjoy internet radio, HEARING YOUR BAND ON INTERNET RADIO, you need to make your feelings known right now to your representatives in the Congress and Senate. Write to them and ask them to help repeal the decision of March 2nd by the Copyright Royalty Board. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Re:A common issue with MySpace - and you have to a
Well, I have one myspace user that hasn't yet noticed how much I improved(flashing image warning) their background - any image leeched from that folder also doubles as a page widener for the benefit of forum readers. Elsewhere, I had one image hotlinked from so many forums, I changed the filenames, and added a note to the page specifically asking people to host elsewhere. That didn't work, so I made a custom job which nicely fits with the style of most forums. Next, it seems game screenshots were being borrowed, so another switch (scroll down to EMMA-LATION) was required. Finally, a picture of Maggie Thatcher was hotlinked, so it was swapped(flashing image again) a bit as well.

What's this, the 9th "Next Silicon Valley"?
We've had "Silicon Prairie" (Champaign, IL). "Silicon Alley" in New York. There's more I'm forgetting right now.
Ultimately all of the talented people who live in places designated to be the next Silicon Valley end up moving to Silicon Valley! We live in a beautiful area and get paid better. Top talent won't stay in Siberia, or Champaign, when they can live in San Francisco.
If there's any "Next Silicon Valley", it would be Los Angeles. Recently it seems that more of the interesting startups are in LA than the Bay Area. Given that so many of the Web 2.0 properties are more about entertainment, this kind of makes sense. And the proximity to Silicon Valley makes it easy for traditional tech investors to go down there. -

I stand corrected... if you would like to support your favorite band, please please please visit their myspace page (such as http://www.myspace.com/classiccase). There should be a way through that. And if your band doesn't have a myspace page, well then I have no useful advice.

Article is misleading
Music sales aren't down. What's down is CD sales by the "big four". The indies are doing well; my buddies in Posamist and The Station (and Inspected By Twelve, who don't have a web presence) who sell CDs at their shows are selling quite a few CDs at each show.
I bought my latest Little Feat CD at their (alas, rained out) show at the State Fair a couple of years ago.
It's telling what the WSJ doesn't attribute their decline on: DRM, rootkits (Sony must DIE!!!!!), the attitude that their paying customers (formerly ME) are theives, the boycott that has been ongoing since 2001, the fact that there is afaik only one true major-label rock and roll band since the century started (Buckcherry), the fact that country music now has violins rather than fiddles (As Mojo Nixon put it in Let's Go Burn Old Nashville Down, "country ain't got flutes!"), the fact that Wierd Al parodies sound better than the songs they make fun of, insipid Simon Cowell-type production on every God damned song, the list is endless.
The reasons they put forth are but a tiny bit of the decline.
The article is clueless all around; for example, they attribute the reduction in CD sales at WalMart from reduced shelf space, when in fact the reduced shelf space comes from the fact they're not selling as many CDs there (partly because WalMart sells crippled, censored versions).

Some information about AtaturkHere's a Turkish blog with an excerpt from an article by Gary Brecher about the "Father of All Turks"
Gary Brecher: Glory to the Turks
Oh, and also here is the Pingus engine game, Gallipoli: The Game which has a very short bio of Ataturk on the page("Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Turkish): Killed a lot of Australians (and New Zealanders) at Gallipoli and therefore became the first President of Turkey."), but it also has a picture. You can play as Ataturk in the game which is a good example of Australian sardonic humor.

Wow!
Twenty paying shows a month? You're absolutely extraordinary.
I'm serious: I worked with a woman who did your job for a while. She spent the days making phone calls to venues who generally never called back. The band I worked for was extraordinarily talented (download some of their music for free here). They quit their day jobs for over two years. They toured up and down the East coast and as far as Detroit. They had a devoted but small audience.
If they could have booked 20 paying gigs a month, they'd still be in existence. Most venues want cover bands, not original music. The venues have the power and so they get to treat me rudely. I bow before your superior nagging-people-on-the-phone skills.
(It's because of that that the "Hey, give the music away and make it up at the live shows" argument on Slashdot makes me furious. But if you've got the secret for booking venues, please let me know and I'll retract everything I've said about it.) -

Not malware or a bot, but still an attack.
I swear sometimes that Slashdot articles follow my life. Just an hour ago I realized that some jackass had posted a link to a 5MB image on Bloomingpedia over 300 times in a comment he made on a myspace page. This was obviously an attempt to disrupt things either on Bloomingpedia or on the myspace page. So I decided to teach this jackass a lesson and use a rewrite rule that turns those image requests into humiliating messages about himself. Some people may have thought I went too far, and maybe that would be the case if he had posted just a few links to the image in his comment, but 300 is excessive. If you're going to do something like this, don't do it from your real account.

Re:Yeah, but
while it may be true that the constitution, or what is left of it after GWB & Co have ripped it to shreds, does not provide protection against corporate censorship, Google in particular holds a special position in that it essentially controls the access to information on the Internet. If there is no oversight or control over Googles attempts to censor this free flow of information all that you consider to be free, open, and useful will be lost. replaced with what someones else thinks you should know. here is a link to a blog which describes Googles attempts to stifle free expression on the Internet http://blog.myspace.com/euthanasiaclinic here is the link to the web site itself

SellabandOK, A couple of things here
... The music publishers are really just music distributors who distribute music from their artists. A long, old (2000) but fascinating, article from Coutney Love shows, I guess only from her perspective, how she gets along with the record companies, and she details how she would be happy to give away her music for free, because (as she eloquently explains!) she's pretty much doing that anyway! It would seem that the music publishers/distributors, record companies, whatever you want to call them, are shafting the artists right royally and are just throwing their toys out of the pram because they can see their gravy train ride coming to an end!
From the other end of the argument comes Sellaband who have setup a method for indepent artists to reach a wide audience of believers who can choose to buy parts in the production of a CD in advance (others have done this before off their own bat, like Marillion, and I thing Dodgy did it too!). The difference here is that a bunch of music industry savvy people have gathered together to offer a real alternative. Sellaband also only tie the artist in for the first year after the CD is created, so rights to the music is returned to the artist and they can choose to stick with Sellaband or decide to move on elsewhere.
OK, I am a Sellaband Believer myself, and I have believed in a number of the artists, most of whom I don't know. Artists from around the world, one of which, Cubworld, has made the $50K and is in the process of making his first album!

Re:ESA Copyright infringement notification
You raise a good point, but I don't listen to conventional bands that would fall under the RIAA's umbrella. I listen to DJ sets recorded from live events or via the radio (BBC Radio One for example). I listen to Anabolic Frolic for example, he has recently starting putting his entire collection online, for free, for everyone to enjoy.
Anabolic Frolic's myspace page
Anabolic's Happy 2B Hardcore Chapters 1 to 7 (This is some of the best Happy Hardcore...ever)
Anabolic's Hullabaloo Collection (Amazing collection of classic rave events, from 1997 to 1999)
Anabolic Frolic & Silver1 HappyHour.com Radio Archives (8GB torrent, around 140 radio sets from 2000 to 2004, most are very good quality sound (128kbit mp3s), but some are lower quality Real Audio files)
I don't buy RIAA music nor will I listen to it, there are plenty of other artists out there to choose from. If I didn't have severe anxiety and agoraphobia, I would actually pay for tickets to go to an Anabolic Frolic event/party and support him that way, if only I was physically able to.. -
