Re:I dunno
is it really wrong to identify morons and give the opportunity to advertise specifically to them
No. But it is extra special wrong to even allow alternative media sites on your platform. Pages about Wasp genocide or moon landing hoaxes are something money can be made from, but anti-war and anti-police brutality pages are literally worse than pages idolizing Hitler.

I'm not such a fan of UBI anymore
Recently I've found different solutions with similar goals to be more promising and less problematic, such as universal basic services and/or a citizens' dividend.
Problems with UBI:

Net Neutrality
Public Support, “Light Touch” Regulation, and the Coming Court Challenges https://www.nakedcapitalism.co... So, handing over half of US households to the tender mercies of an ISP monopoly is transparent, alright, but not, I think, in the way that Pai means. I’m sure the populist farmers and Grangers of Minnesota or South Dakota who had to ship their grain to market over one railroad in the 1880s would find RIFO oddly familiar. “Freedom for whom?” they might ask.

Re:USA contrasted with...
" I'd love to hear companies speak of employees like something other than a lump of coal to be tossed into the boiler."
Not going to happen until you people start getting a clue that your masters don't even practice what they preach, you guys need to stop licking the balls of capitalist ideology so hard and ask tough questions about whether rule of law can even exist in a high tech society. How is one to hold a big company accountable when you are hundreds of miles away from it? I have serious doubts most of you guys are introspective and self critical enough to see through your leaders bullshit.
You want to be treated better you guys need to start scaring the shit out of the business community and let them know you'll stand up for your right to exist too instead of being so slave like to the business community.

Re:work less
Interesting graph. Yes productivity grows, for 200 years now. Now, can you produce one of median earner - the ones with torches and pitchforks, instead of aggregate economy output?
Indeed as you correctly argue, there was a huge dip and rebound in employment before in history - during the start of industrial revolution - all these people had a hard time for a while when they suddenly didn't have to spend all the time on a farm. Instead, they did the same in factories. I agree, it was a step up. But what's the next "factories" in the current event? Making youtube videos and serving lattes?
The current level of underemployment is unprecedented. There are other solutions than UBI. Shorten hours to 5 a day. Not enough? People born on odd days work only on odd days, people born on even days work only on even days. It could go on...
Also, back of envelope math says that robots need to do at least 90% of (tangible goods) output, as well their output be taxed by that much for UBI to be feasible. That's still quite a long way. As for service sector - that is completely market priced, and will always exist in separate universe (perhaps gravitating towards elite). It will be vastly disconnected from robot produced commodities market - want to watch kenye west live? You better pony up, kid, because there's no robot replacing him. -

Sarbanes-Oxley evidently does not apply to banks
Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) was supposed to mandate C-level knowledge and responsibility for all actions. Yet here we are with no SOX charges.
WF's C-levels were either aware of the activity or ignorant. If ignorant then this is a SOX violation.
As a bonus, this is Elizabeth Warren's province, and she is exposed for the toothless sellout she really is.
FYI, a much better article on the subject. -
Less creative than it could have been
There is some excellent analysis and commentary here, focusing on the metadata and and how it exposes the political/financial connections.... I *highly* recommend you scroll down and go thru the comments there, keeping in mind the Clinton foundation was accepting multi-million dollar gifts from mideastern countries while she was arranging arms deals as Secretary of State. BTW the site I linked is starting to remind me more and more of the old Groklaw.
I always see things like that and wonder whether anyone, anywhere can play a higher level of game.
The person releasing the documents could have thought through what would happen. Knowing and with reasonable prediction, he *could* have placed some false and condemning documents in with the stash - something that would be outrageous if true.
For the right and subtly-constructed data, the press would leap on it in a heartbeat and it be a sensation for a few days. Then it would be roundly disproven, and then it would cast doubt on all the other documents.
The end result would be a lot of people chaotically talking about that specific candidate for a few days. Depending on the persuasion dimension, that could be crafted to be good or bad for the chosen candidate. Misleading identity would be bad for the candidate: something that causes the public to give the candidate a derogatory nickname. Misleading facts would be good for the candidate: cause a lot of talk, easily dis-proven, and doesn't apply to their persona.
All we really see in this world is straightforward and transparent actions.
I'd like to see someone hatch a conspiracy or elaborate prank on the world, just to show that there are people who can do it.

Re:Sad truth: No Jail Time or RICO confiscation
"offshore" "tax havens" are typically used BECAUSE THEY ARE LEGAL... whether it's an individual or a big corporation like apple or microsoft.... THAT IS WHY THEY DO IT.. because they can, and because it's LEGAL. public corporations have the added obligation of 'maximizing shareholder value' and you do that by reducing your costs (taxes) as much as possible.. and that means utilizing all the legal tools and resources available, regardless of country. now i'm sure that some of the data to be released will detail illegal transactions and such.. but the majority of the persons and businesses (we're talking the 'non drug dealer' and 'non terrorist' types) will be legal transactions and accounts for which the public has absolutely no business knowing anything about.
This is pure FUD and propaganda, and it has been debunked many times by actual Wall St. economists with publications and degrees to their name. Once again, it is pure FUD and propaganda.

Re:The earth's chucking a wobbly!
So you wanna explain how you are gonna manufacture all these phones and cars and fridges and laptops with ZERO carbon output? Because if you say "cap and trade" allow me to educate you, its even having its "rules" written by the one who created credit default swaps, you know, one of the biggest scams in financial history?
So lets here how you are gonna manufacture all this stuff with ZERO carbon output, without using a magic bean scam like crap & trade, because I want to hear this. I wanna hear how you are gonna turn the first world into the first world with NO energy expended that creates carbon and NO carbon output in manufacturing. Can't use hydro-electric, because that kills the fishes and the greenies are blocking building of new damns, can't use nuclear either because the greenies are blocking those too....so lets hear it, because i have a feeling its gonna be as much bullshit as solar fricking roadways.

Re:How patriotic! Criminalizing decent
So kinda like how Al Gore is pushing for positions he is set to make a killing in or how his buddies at Goldman Sachs hired the woman who came up with credit default swaps, aka "economy killers", to write the cap and trade rules so that their friends get carbon indulgences while only the peasants have to pay?
I hate to tell ya but there is scammers on BOTH sides, and all it takes is to look at a fat fucking hypocrite like rev Al living in a McMansion, driving in a fleet of stretch SUVs, and flying in a personal Lear jet while he says YOU need to tighten your belt you filthy fucking peasant you, after all he is "carbon neutral" because he pays himself carbon credits from his own company which is like moving your money from your left pocket to your right, to see some serious scamming going on.
Cap & Trade might as well be called "give these rich fucks your money tax" since the BRIC have ALREADY said "we ain't playing that game" and thanks to the same rich fat fucks pushing "globalism" AKA 'pay peasants peanuts while poisoning their land and water" its not like we can do jack shit about it, without Cheapo Chinese Crap our stores wouldn't have shit to sell. Without BRIC on board its not gonna do shit except give the corps an excuse to send what little work is left here over there (which they will probably get a tax break for doing) because news flash America, those countries are bigger than you and China especially is putting out a hell of a lot more smog and crap than America has for awhile.
-
Re:Don't worry!
That is because Gore and pals are set to become carbon billionaires by selling indulgences, which of course means that things that might actually make a difference, like recycling tech, building a "people's car/truck" that gets 50 MPG+ for under $20K and then using a "cash for clunkers" style program to get all the poor folks out of older gas guzzlers? Well that is off the table because Gore and his friends at Goldman Sachs couldn't print money at the barrel of a gun while giving their rich pals free passes....err..."carbon offsets" and we can't have THAT now, can we?
What I can't believe is how many on the left is willing to buy his bullshit, can you name ONE THING, just one, that he is proposing that he hasn't already set himself up to become insanely rich if it comes to pass, just one? Well if everybody in the west gives me just 1 dollar a year why I'll cure climate change within a century using my magical AGW wands! Of course it won't work, but neither will Gore's plans but it'll make me rich and that IS the real goal of this, to make a few a lot richer with a reverse robin hood...right?
If you guys want to listen to somebody about AGW? Ed Begley Jr, and wadda ya know, nearly all his ideas are sensible. But then again he drives an electric car, lives in a modest home and takes coach instead of a personal fleet of SUVs to a personal Lear Jet to his McMansion with an indoor basketball court that uses more AC in a month than a half a dozen families of five do in a year like Gore...but its all good, right? After all Gore pays himself carbon indulgences from his own shell corp thus getting credit for moving money from his left to right pocket...that saves the world too, right?

Yves Smith
http://www.nakedcapitalism.com...
Best economics group blog on the Internet. Led by Yves Smith, who's writing about the 2008 banking crisis was absolutely brilliant and spot-on. Also Philip Pilkington, who's blog "Fixing the Economists" is essential reading. Non-ideological (unless you disagree with them, in which case you will claim - falsely - that they're ideological). Their economics expertise is unquestioned.
I read their blog every day and every time I find myself disagreeing with something they've written, I learn that I was wrong.

The vote is too late, it won't make any difference
They vote is too late, they will default. Yves Smith over at NakedCapitalism lays it out nicely.
"We described in detail how the referendum scheduled in Greece for next Sunday, July 5, is a cynical exercise in democracy theater. The Greek people are being asked to vote on a (draft) proposal by Greece’s lenders to unlock €7.2 billion in funds, the last portion of the so-called “second bailout” agreed by the Greek government in 2012. Tsipras knew at the time he announced the referendum that the proposal expired on June 30; that was the known-well-in-advance final date for the bailout terms to be agreed if each and every one of the 18 Eurozone countries agreed. We said it was a no-brainer that they would not agree; in Germany as with some of the other countries, it would require parliamentary approval to accommodate Greece’s too-late request, and there was no reason for any of them to cut Greece slack when the government has plenty of opportunity to schedule the vote in time, so it actually would inform the government’s actions.
Instead, Tsipras has already taken the decision to miss the €1.6 billion IMF payment due June 30 and the €3.5 billion ECB payment that falls on July 20, while falsely telling Greek citizens that they have a say in this momentous choice."

Re:suckers
Sigh...as opposed to the AGW lobby which is run by such selfless companies as Goldman Sachs while pushing cap and trade which has the rules written by the same one who cooked up credit default swaps and is the kind of scam frankly a kid could see through, meanwhile you have Rev Al setting himself up to be a carbon billionaire while driving a fleet of SUVs like a third world El Presidente and living in a McMansion with ACed basketball court while he says that YOU need to pay more, you filthy climate damaging peasant you.
Do we need to pollute less and save more? Of course, this is common sense, but we will get NO common sense approaches offered because companies like Goldman Sachs and scammers like Gore couldn't make out like highway robbery on common sense so we'll get scams like crap and trade pushed where the worst polluters get their carbon "indulgences" so pay nothing, scammers like Gore will pay themselves in carbon credits from their own company so he can have the brass balls to fly a lear jet for one and ride in a fleet of Caddie SUVs while claiming he is "carbon neutral" so who does that leave to pay these shitbags for their magic beans? Why that would be YOU, you filthy peasant who can't afford your own offshore LLC, why you are killing the planet!
-
Re:Who cares?
Which checks would those be? The checks from Goldman Sachs for pushing the AGW reverse robin hood credit default swaps...err I mean ":carbon credits". Or would those be the checks from Al Gore who is in bed with Goldman Sachs and has set himself up to become carbon billionaire if he and GS get their giant scam that won't do shit but make them even richer made into the law?
Dude if you believe EITHER side gives a single fuck about the environment? I have some genuine Arkansas anti global warming crystals I'll be happy to sell ya, only $499.99 so act now! BTW if you actually DO give a shit about the environment? DO NOT BUY THE SCAMS, talk to somebody that actually walks the walk...Ed Begley Jr. unlike Rev Al who lives in a McMansion whose indoor basketball court uses more AC than a family home? He lives in a modest 3 bedroom, Rev Al drives a fleet of SUVs to his one man Lear jet? Begley drives an electric car to a commuter flight. But if you were to look up Begley's thoughts on the subject? You'd find an overdose of COMMON SENSE, make it easier for folks to use electric cars, promote renewables in places like AZ where solar works really well, invest in tech that will let us do more with what we have and recycle easier...its ALL common Goddamned sense!
But of course you can't become a billionaire with sensible logical approaches which is why you are getting pounded with "ZOMFG teh sky is fallin! You HAVE to do this thing (which won't do a damned thing because we filled it with more loopholes for our 1% pals than a Coke has HFCS) because we have to SAVE TEH EARF!"

Great product bloodlines
Keith McMillan Instruments is the company that makes the QuNEO board, which I've been using in the studio and live performance for over a year now and it's one of my favorite controllers.
My only suggestion is to wait until the 2nd iteration. It's a small company and I had trouble with my first QuNEO, which had some bugs. The ones they're selling now are really great though, with top build quality.
Oh yeah, the K-Board is going for $99, which probably means it would be soon showing up for less at Guitar Center if Mitt Romney's Bain Capital (nka "Ares Capital") hadn't run Guitar Center into the ground and stripped its assets and turned it into a smoking crater of a company (for which Bain Capital was paid handsomely).
In summary: Keith McMillan Instruments is a good company that makes good, reasonably priced products. Bain Capital makes absolutely nothing and is as evil as a company can be without directly poisoning people. Any questions?
-
Re:What are the practical results of this?
why does everyone always talk about the koch brothers
Because they're anti-government fanatics who fund right wing media and climate change denial. Which puts them in a whole nother league than other rich scummy fucks like Bill Gates.

Because the Democrats whore themselves out as much as Republicans do.
Any more dumb questions?

Re:Too weak because humans are not the cause
You want ties to industry? How about cap and trade being written by the same geniuses that gave us credit default swaps? At the end of the day you can wave whatever flag you want because the only "solutions" being pushed are nothing but a reverse robin hood scam where the actual polluters get carbon "indulgences" while those that can't afford to offshore their wealth get royally fucked in the ass to benefit the 1%...surprise surprise, the rich getting richer by stealing what few cents out of each dollar they don't already hoard.
Its nothing but a case of "tighten your belt peasant to save teh earf!" being sold to ya by guys like Rev Al Gore who sips his wine while riding in a fleet of SUVs to his McMansion...but he is "green" because he pays himself carbon credits from his own company LOL! It just shows you how badly the greenies have been had, when a guy can take money from his left pocket and put it in his right and get credit (as well as a tax break) for being "carbon neutral" LOL!
-
Re: Senator James Inhofe
Except if we get this particular question "wrong" it will hand billions of dollars to banksters like Goldman Sachs for some magic beans...err... carbon default swaps, and at the end of the day it will have as much affect on the actual climate as snake oil has on your health. It'll let a handful in power pull yet another reverse robin hood while going "tighten your belt peasant,we need this wealth to save teh eaarf!"
I find it telling that the biggest pusher of this crap and trade shit is Rev Al Gore, a man of farts around in a single person Lear jet, has a fleet of SUVs he travels in, and goes home to a McMansion that uses more power in a week than a dozen single family homes uses in a year...but its okay, see? he pays himself indulgences from his own company so that don't count! LOL its as insane as moving money from your left to right pocket, calling it a "donation" and getting a fucking tax break for doing so LOL!

Re:Rupert Murdoch Streisand
News Corp is a corrupt corporation.
It is also a public company (Nasdaq:NWS) and, as such, is required to publicly disclose financials. Hiding financial information, and misleading investors, is illegal.
There are very specific rules they have to follow and simply claiming they need to reveal all financial information to the public is pretty much false. I'm not going to disagree with the idea that news corp isn't really news... they're an entertainment company that tells a certain group of people what they want to hear... and makes a lot of money doing it. But this whole notion that they're some sort of evil empire secretly controlling peoples minds? It's a joke... they don't need to convince their viewers of what they're showing them... that's how those viewers already saw the world and Newscorp is playing to that crowd.
All people, everywhere, no matter what political view they have, will search out information that re-enforces their own world view. And make no mistake, we are all wrong. Every single one of us. I've heard just as much ridiculous misguided nonsense come out of left as I've heard come out of the right.

I would start with the excellent site by Yves Smith, Naked Capitalism. The writers there are not wild-eyed ideologues, but people who have spent careers in the financial industry, working at pretty high levels. They've been all over this story since the Wikileaks documents broke. Remember, it was Wikileaks that published the secret TPP documents as well, which put the efforts to push that treaty through the tunnel on its heels, at least temporarily. Sunshine can be a great disinfectant.

Re: Not France vs US
Oh, you might find this little essay interesting. It's about reducing tariffs when there is no "emergency". It discusses why the benefit of tariffs is not that they help us out of a tough spot, but that they create stability for wage-earners, which is exactly what our leaders have been trying to destroy for the past 30 years.
Tariffs are just one part of a sound trade policy.

Spin Doctors
I love this quote from the article;
Additionally, the current draft also includes language inferring that, upon the finishing of negotiations, the document will be kept classified for five full years.
It makes it sound like the annex will not be seen for 5 years after it is in effect.
Here is the reason from the actual document; This document must be protected from unauthorized disclosure, but may be mailed or transmitted over unclassified e-mail or fax, discussed over unsecured phone lines, and stored on unclassified computer systems. It must be stored in a locked or secured building, room, or container.
It refers to the current document as it is a draft. The final document will not have this clause as it will need to be debated before it can be passed by each country. WikiLeaks is again playing on the general lack of understanding of how complex treaties are and need to be negotiated.

Re:Private sector and efficiency.
Efficiency in private sector is defined to be maximizing the return on investment. Private sector efficiency is NOT delivering goods and services at the least cost to most people. If that is the *only* way to maximize the return on investment, they will do it. It happens on simple products like cereal, bread, milk etc.
It doesn't even work entirely for those. Civic duty used to be an important part of American education. Now we have mega-banks that capture markets and suck the value out of everything they can.
