Turns out that *BSD is stronger than ever!
According to an Inernetnews article, Netcraft has confirmed that *BSD has "dramatically increased its market penetration over the last year."
There has been a steady increase in *BSD developers over the past decade.
There are currently 307 FreeBSD developers as of the 2004 core team election.

Well clippy now has "Ports"!

Checkout the NetBSD pkgsrc pages and notice the bootstrap package for 'Interix 3.5". That is SFU 3.5 to the rest of the world.

Now you can:
# pkg_add ftp://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/packages////

Prerequisites will be automatically retrieved and installed if they are available in the same remote directory.

Packages are installed by default into /usr/pkg.
You should ensure that /usr/pkg/bin and /usr/pkg/sbin are in your PATH variable (best set in /etc/csh.cshrc).

'Course, I am using zsh - The shell of choice for conformists.

NetBSD will make that into a usable machine again. :-)

Either that, or for real nostalgia, get ahold of a copy of OS/2v4.

There seems to be some trouble at Verio or ISC with the main NetBSD site. I've had no trouble getting to it through Pair.com's mirror www3.us.netbsd.org.

They started it in January, and it closed at the end of February. It was announced on at least their advocacy mailing list, and was on their news section on the front page of NetBSD.org at the time. They've been choosing a winner since then.

Maybe you should try out a *BSD? I've never had that problem with either FreeBSD or NetBSD. They're not just for servers; I've used both of them quite successfully as desktops as well. You can even run your Linux binaries through a full-speed emulation layer.

Sure, but unless you would like to emulate the Pentium 4 as part of the OS as well, you will need to recompile the apps. That means you need source code. Good luck running MS Office on ReactOS running on any of the non-Intel, non-PPC platforms here

This does most of those who maintain both a Windows box and an OSS box absolutely no good. The only reason they have the Windows box is for that one game, app, etc, that runs only on Windows/x86.

I realize I glossed over the first part of your post by omission, but really, Wine is what you want if you want to run Windows/x86 apps on top of a *nix compatible OS.

Linux has been more widely ported than an other OS in history.

Sorry, NetBSD clearly beats out Linux for this title (and I won't begin to claim that NetBSD is the most ported OS, though it does seem probable). The fact that gcc's supported arch list is shrinking doesn't help Linux to continue to work on more archs (though I think Linux is still designed to compile on the 2.x line, not the 3.x where all the shrinking occurred).

I picked up a ps2 probably within the first 100 as they where released in australia. one of the compelling reasons is the back catalogue of software. The sweet spot in terms of developers writing for platforms is probably starts from the 3rd or 4th series of title releases. This means as soon as I got the ps2 home I had compelling games.

  some of these are for the ankle biters but show me the latest *equivalent* (all for less than $40).

low res graphics comes second to playability for me anyway. this may explain why I still enjoy playing trek and adventure (one of the first games I played ~ on a commodore pet) on my openbsd box.

It's the how well games play, not the dancing bear. get it?

ps: I wouln't mind getting a gamecube there's some great games written for it.

Hopefully it doesn't require the entire 64 MB. :)

Unfortunately, Dillo crashes on my NetBSD/mac68k box. With 80 MB, it is surely capable of running a GUI browser, but none currently exist. (Opera resists my entreaties to compile their browser for this platform. ;) Minimo sounds very hopeful.

On more modest hardware, NetBSD is a lot of fun. See - I even swing both ways. :)

But come to think of it, there are commercial alternatives to Winblows as well: e.g. Mac OS X. A lot of people are discovering that OS X is an industrial strength server O/S that shines very brightly on the desktop too. And Apple hardware is very hard to beat reliability-wise (speaking as someone who's been in charge of Mac studios nearly 20 years).

All we need are some facts to shine through the constant smog of FUD from Redmond and their hirelings. Then the war is won. Can't wait.

How many people in North America are there? Let's see. The number of North America versus European posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 379x5 = 1.895 billion North American users. Asian posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of North American posts.

Therefore there are about 900 million people in Asia. A recent article put Australia at about 80 percent of the Usenet market. Therefore there are (1895+379+900)x4 = 12.6 billion worldwide Usenet users. This is consistent with the number of worldwide Usenet posts.

Due to population growth in other countries around the world, such as:

North America at 5.1%
Asia at 60.8%
Australia at 32.1%
Africa at 58.3%

Compare this with the 0.3% annual population increase of Europe, and it becomes clear that all too soon, it will become statistically insignificant.

All major surveys show that Europe has steadily declined in global population share. Europe is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Europe is to survive at all it will be among government hobbyists, dabblers, and dilettantes. Europe continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Europe is dead.

The reason why FreeBSD's port system has grown so quickly is probably because there's only been one architecture they had to 'port' applications across to. It would be slowed down if they had to unify the ports system to support not only multi-platform architectures, but also the differences between the kernels for each BSD project.

To those who understand the reference, it may be funny. To everyone else, it is just confusing.

FreeBSD's little devil logo is well-drawn and cute. But the logo doesn't match the subject. FreeBSD is seriously important! It's the OS of choice for those who want to run a secure web server. It's not clear to me why FreeBSD is chosen more than the other BSDs, but FreeBSD has become important to the world. The FreeBSD license allows mixing with closed source software, and commercial sale, and that's important to many commercial users. But does the logo say that? No, the logo tells first-time visitors to expect something cute.

NetBSD is also extremely important. It allows commercial companies to strip out everything unnecessary and to sell an OS that is dedicated to being an extremely secure mail server, for example. However, I don't understand the connection with a bunch of devils taking ownership over a few broken-looking computers. The FreeBSD logo gives the initial impression that it is the OS of choice for computers gotten from a dumpster.

I often need to go to people who don't have much technical knowledge and explain to them why I have chosen a software package. You can save me hours! You can save me hours of boring, repetitive explanation that the software is great, it is just the communication skills that are lacking.

Also, good managers know that communication is a large part of the total cost of implementation of software. They are correct to be scared when they see evidence of poor communication.

for me, the answer was to move to BSD. the BSDs - openbsd, freebsd, and netbsd - are excellent, free (in both senses), totally community-driven, unencumbered with the sort of corporate bullcrap that's going on in much of the linux world, and they run all the same software that you've become accustomed to under linux.

serious unix users owe it to themselves to check these systems out; they really are superb - if you doubt it, poke around netcraft for a while and see for yourself.
