Re:Somewhat OT: EV1 Servers
Does EV1 really think it's a good idea to KEEP supporting SCO's FUD in front of a big audience of Linux people?
Except for some minor backlash at the time, it hasn't seemed to hurt their business since. They used to be the bargain in discout servers, but there are a lot of alternatives now, yet they seem to be chugging along. I guess most of their customers simply don't care.
:( -
Re:Requiem for the FUD (hardly flamebait, but...)Pretty much every server the company I work for (~2000 employees) has bought in the past 3 years have had 2 CPUs.
Then FreeBSD's SMP support either isn't that bad or isn't that relevant in most scenarios, since the hosting professionals keep choosing it.
Nearly 2.5 Million Active Sites running FreeBSD
It's from june 2004. One year before it was 1.5 million (1 million less).>If they hadn't used the 5.3 RCs, they'd be accused of intentionally using old versions that had inferior SMP support.
This is simply a silly assumption.
That was hardly flamebait. FBSD is just now starting to get acceptable on 2 way machines for typical server tasks. They have a good long way to go before they are "good". Linux and Solaris (and even NT) have been there for years.
Indeed that post was hardly flamebait, but it was also hardly relevant.
Everybody knows that FreeBSD has points of weakness (SMP support now is far from optimal) along with many points of strength (see the Network Stack link in the first post in the thread, and how in that case FreeBSD's performance excels compared to Linux): but this has hardly anything to do with the "BSD is dying" FUD that has been circulating for some years, and that the first post in the thread was about.

Re:Slashdotted in the mysterious future?
Check netcraft. It will show thatskyos.org is running on Linux.

FYI
Funny, Mike Smith is now a senior kernel developer at Apple working on their FreeBSD-derived kernel, and Apple is hardly dying.
FYI: FreeBSD is hardly dying too.

Re:No wonder they're laggin behind...
Or maybe you're a fool and didn't realize that the original poster knew exactly what he was talking about.
See Netcrafts own explanation of impossible operating system/server combinations which basically explain that it's obvious in this case that the Load Balancer (machine directly attached to the Internet) is running FreeBSD, while the webserver (in this case a Windows box behind the load balancer) is running IIS. -

LIAR
Maybe Microsoft properties like Hotmail.com don't run Linux on their public webservers ANYMORE. But check NetCraft for ".microsoft.com"; the first hundred or so hosts are *all* Linux, possibly lab machines judging from their hostname. And many more throughout those records are Linux, including those at partners plugged directly into Microsoft IT. Then there are all the hosts NetCraft reports as "unknown" - Windows doesn't report as "unknown". And we're just looking at the public hosts that NetCraft can see, not the many thousands of hosts actually run by Microsoft.
Maybe Markezich doesn't know about NetCraft. Maybe he just doesn't care that geeks can easily find out he's telling the big lie. A CNet News article that gets the meaning of "alpha tester" wrong isn't pointed at geeks, but at PHBs who just envy Markezich's salary, and the insider releases his job includes. That there's any Linux around Microsoft at all shows just how important is Linux to any large organization's IT. Especially when they're taking the risk of lying about Linux not existing: it all makes Windows triply bad. Another Open Source advantage over proprietary software: no lying CIO to get caught, discrediting the rest of the organization - there's always "the other" distro, where the truth is at home. -
Microsoft Sun
At least in the "eating your own dogfood" department:
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/12/11/wwwge orgewbushcom_switches_to_selfhosted_freebsd_server _wwwsuncom_upgrades_to_solaris_9_not_10.html
Of course if the Sun admins are going by what the www.sun.com webpage says, they're probably just as confused as I am about when the real version of Solaris 10 is coming, why they had a "release event" without releasing the actual product, why all those "Solaris 10" links go to Solaris Express beta downloads, and so on. -
Re:Real world vs. fanboy fantasies
"Now, here are the facts as they're found by SEVERAL INDEPENDENT RESEARCH INSTITUTES:[...]
... That's a bold statement to do.
When a Company gets as big AND as dominant as Microsoft, there's no way of validating the indipendence of research anymore. Now, that's not like saying that the Borg entity bought off all studies, but no, I cannot accept the indipendence claim.
One fact nags me, tough. The worst mob to please should evidently be Indipendent internet service providers: they are more competent than the general public, they're in it for the money and not the mojo... a host of factor. So, how come that Apache server has triple the Market share of Microsoft? -
Re:Last Administrator!
Their 2003 switch to linux was a desperate last ditch attempt to save them from their impending doom. Just check out Netcraft. Their switch is now catching up to them. They can only really afford the cheaper windows, because the TCO of linux is humoungous. Don't get me started on that Piece of Shit apache thing. Look at: THE TRUTH for more information.

Remember Scoble's false alarm about this?
Back in September Microsoft blogging evangelist Robert Scoble warned that RSS is broken, saying the sky was falling and RSS bandwidth usage was forcing Microsoft to skinny down its feeds. Turns out it wasn't quite true. Microsoft's IT folks thought 400KB feeds were excessive, and RSS feeds are no big deal compared to 106 million downloads of the 75MB SP2 update. But the ensuing debate produced some useful discussion among RSS enthusiasts about ways to make clients smarter and give more server-side control. See the writeup at Netcraft (Slashdot is noted as an early adopter).

Red Hat has the highest marketshare out of Linux..
Well it is true that Red Hat has the highest market share out of all Linux servers.
According to Netcraft, most Linux servers are running Red Hat:
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/07/12/sligh t_linux_market_share_loss_for_red_hat.html
The other distributions each by its own numbers do not make a difference at all!
Red Hat is single handedly the most easy to use and biggest known Linux brand name. Most of the IT people I know use Red Hat interchangably with Linux. It's like Kleenex or Aspirin Aspirin. It has become an every day household name. -
Slashdot's server...according to netcraft!
Lookit here - slashdot.org
Unless, they do a very elaborate setup whereas it is actually WinNT but presenting it as *nix.. It can be done you know..
But if it is running IIS, somehow or rather, I doubt slashcode can be run on IIS with ActivePerl, stably I mean..

Netcraft Reports
Netcraft is reporting this too. Check out there story here. I wonder if the fact that several Internet backbones were blocking Lycos's site had anything to do with them finally deciding to pull it. My guess is simply that this was creating too much bad publicity. Everyone was talking about how Lycos was using unethical tactics to try to stop spam. Lycos probably figured it was not worth it.

Global Crossing Blocking Access?
According to netcraft GLBX was/is blocking access to the lycos screensaver site. Is this because the majority of DDOS traffic to sites that spammers use in China was transiting GLBXs backbones - sort of telling isnt it? Is GLBX the most spammer friendly backbone now?
-

Here's an article showing the effect of the Lycos screensaver on some target sites

Actually...
It's according to Netcraft. Their story is Spam Sites Crippled by Lycos Screensaver DDoS, followed by Lycos Screensaver Site Blocked by Internet Backbones and Lycos Screensaver Site Changed, Now Says "Stay Tuned". F-Secure also says spammers are beginning to fight back by redirecting traffic back to Lycos.

Well in touch with latest technology...
In addition to having written a weather warning widget with the information they provide, I've noticed that their system usually takes beatings nicely whenever widespread severe weather occurs. Based on the interactions I've had with the website in creating the widget, their backend consists of the PHP/MySQL duo... they also run Apache 2 and Red Hat according to Netcraft. Their warnings are in both RSS and XML feeds. So it's been nice working with what they've been willing to provide, especially when you consider the large audience they serve.
-
Re:DOS
Interestingly enough, Netcraft IS reporting this as a DDoS attack because several of the spam sites targeted by Make Love Not Spam have gone down.

An apologyOur affectionate troll (various posts):
FreeBSD is dying.Listen, buddy... it's not that we don't trust you (we do! of course we do, why wouldn't we) it's just that.. y'know, all the available sources seem to completely disagree with that statement - unless you count *yourself* as a source, of course.
So, I really would like to apologize on behalf of everybody here in the BSD section if, occasionally, you might be called names like "retard" or "clueless idiot" or "FUD-spreading GNU/troll". Maybe it's because of the academical spirit of the BSD projects that they attract scientific-minded people (duh!..) who tend not to believe in unsupported statements - and even less in statements going against the supported truth.
Besides, I really have to apologize for their complete lack of humour, because you clearly have been doing this for years just to be funny, and not to spread FUD.
On the whole, I hope you can forgive them for their close-mindedness that, I'm sure, is the reason that prevents them from dropping *BSD and switching to GNU/Linux.
Please forgive them, and don't take it personally!(..I don't need to put an explicative closing tag here, do I!..)
-
Just for the record
Just for the record: FreeBSD is growing, in numbers *and* in share.
Troll messages on slashdot won't change this fact.. they didn't do it in the past *five years* (at least..), they won't do it in the future. :) -
Re:Remove the log from thine own eye
Such as the US Republican party blocking access to their sites outside of North America? (note: this is new, not the temporary election block) What possible rationale could they have to limit access in this manner?

Looking at the search tools on the site, they are asp pages. Now lets get the flames started. -
For some *real* research links...Needless to say, the MIT link this mindless GNU/troll's posting is *10 years old* (1994).
No surprise that Research conducted at Harvard in year *2000* (here's the full text) tells a different story: BSD's Soft Updates technology is on par with journaling on the whole, and in many cases it provides superior performance. It's nice to see the GNU fans spreading FUD about BSD (this, and the whole "BSD is dying" campaign). One might wonder what's the difference between GNU and the big and evil corporations they hate so much, since they're using the same dishonest marketing techniques - and spreading FUD is really the most disgusting.
Luckily, the OS world hasn't been monopolized yet by FUD-spreading corporations and FUD-spreading communists. There still is BSD - and it's here to stay.
