Re:Final Fantasy XI not likely.
"The gamecube has no support for network play" When you've finished removing your head from your ass, you'll find the soon-to-be-released Gamecube broadband adpater here -
Re:upgrades?
The gamecube has a couple of expansion slots underneath it (I believe three), one of which is definitely for a modem (either broadband or dialup, look at nintendo.com to see the examples.

Did you see this article?
The title basically sums it up, "Sonic the Hedgehog Reports for his First Day of Work at Nintendo".

Re:Who did the QA on the GBA?
Nintendo actually considered the use of a some sort of lighting system, but decided against it as it would use the batteries too quickly and increase the price of the system.
See this link for more details. -
What platforms will it run on?What platforms will Star Wars Galaxies run on? The answer may seem obvious, but LucasArts may want to address many different gaming platforms, as well as few desktop ones. To make the development optimal, they should use some abstraction layers. I know people who could help with that.
The screenshots look impressive. It would be cool if I could play that on my platform. And however I realize, that I belong to the minority of gamers (which is good, like Mark Twain has already said, "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect."), I still think that when they would wisely program this game for many different gaming platforms and few desktop ones, it'd be a piece of cake to release other version. But I'm affraid that they would prefer us to use other options, unfortunately...
Oh, well, I gues I'll just have to wait for Mason, or Warewolf, or Sands of Syllus, or Archipelago, or Catacombs, or Belchfire, or Acid Tempest, or Phoenix...

DK is available on Game Boy for $10
I would never seriously consider paying to have a Donkey Kong arcade machine. It's old, clunky, and probably smells of whatever bar or grease-pit it's been rotting in for the last 2 decades.
A new display and cabinet would fix that.
To download the rom for free, (and illegally), gives me a great deal of satisfaction playing a old, great game I would not otherwise ever engage in.
So would buying a legit copy of the software for ten bucks at Amazon and playing it on your Game Boy.
However, I don't think it should be wrong to connect a cartridge dumper to your computer and play games of which you own a legitimate copy through an emulator, no matter what Nintendo says.

Attention chassis manufacturers: HANDLES
I'm with the submitter that smaller form factors are nice. However one thing that I know they can control right here and now is the presence of HANDLES on the cases.
I'm an avid gamer. I had to buy a third-party (albeit excellent) product from CaseAce to help me carry my box to LAN parties etc. And I got a flat-screen monitor that was easier to carry than my 17" monitor.
But if computer manufacturers would just put a stout handle built in to the case, that would go a long way towards making me happy. Same thing for monitor builders, although I understand the problem is different for them.
For instance, look at the Gamecube. Arguably as much power as the other gaming platforms, but much easier for portage purposes. Why can't computer makers take a hint here? -
Re:So much for "open" standards ...
The Game Boy Advance doesn't have an infrared link. You're thinking of the Game Boy Color.

Re:Argh!
It's not just a cost savings but a space and (like you mentioned) power savings. It can significantly reduce complexity in the processor, and most embedded applications for PDAs. They don't need hard float for performance, action/FPS games are not a selling point for these products. Most PocketPC PDAs being made today are ARM based(some are MIPS) I'm an embedded developer, I don't believe I've ever developed for an ARM device WITH an FPU, in fact.
Floating point alone won't necessarily expand the life of a PDA. For most people it's actually the physical construction of the PDA that determines it's life (if they actually intend to use it for it's scheduling/notetaking etc. purposes). PDAs are never designed around real gaming after all.
If you want portable gaming try Gameboy Advance. It happens to be based on an ARM processor, coincidentally, but I don't know if it has an FPU. -
Re:What's so bad about board games?
I have nothing against electronic board games.
Hurrah for Mario Party and Sonic Shuffle.
But the problem is when they get to be "single player board game"
Then again, my brother had fun playing Talisman using all the characters. That game took quite a few hours. -
Ben and His Projects
I was going to post a story on Ben Heckendorn's SNES portable, but I decided to wait until he is finished with something far more interesting.
The Gamecube is already a very much portable unit, considering it's external and internal size, carrying handle, and detachable screen. This is Ben's next un/confirmed project over at his site. I found his comment on this in the forums. While the portable aspect of the Gamecube is nifty, Ben focuses on making consoles into handheld units (so yes it is portable already, but not handheld). The SNES is interesting, but I'm waiting to see how this turns out. -
Re:Im waiting til someone builds a compressed...
Nintendo did this in 1996, when they released the Game Boy Pocket.
That was really funny though, even though it was uninformed and all. Seriously. . . -
Lots of errors in the article...
I'm not gonna retype all the errors.. so here's my email to their editor pointing a slew out...
In the console list...
The Playstation is a 32-bit machine.
The Dreamcast is a 128-bit machine.
The Sega Genesis was the most popular platform of the 16-bit generation.
The second most popular machine of that generation was the Super Nintendo which is missing from your list.
You are also missing the 3DO console which was 32-bit IIRC.
..
In the features of the current crop of consoles..
The Gamecube can do 8 texture effects per pixel per pass.
The Gamecube's polygon performance you have listed is misleading, as that is in-game estimates from Nintendo, vs theoretical maximums of unlit triangles which the Xbox and Playstation 2 numbers are.
The Gamecube supports 3D sound, in fact Rouge Squadron 2 (a launch title) supports Dolby Pro Logic II (5.1).
Most Gamecube games support HDTV 640p, and the Gamecube has digital video out support.
Why is the XBox OS not considered "Closed, Microsoft proprietary"? Which it is.
The Gamecube will have broadband and 56k modem support via a plug in modem/nic.
For future reference, N/A means Not Applicable.. Not .. I don't have a clue and don't care so I'll put N/A.
A ? is a better substitute for not having a clue than N/A.
You also have the wrong CPU and Graphics processor speeds on the Gamecube. The CPU is 485Mhz, and graphics core operates at 1/3 the speed or around 162Mhz. The number you had were old number prior to E3.
Up to date Gamecube spec are here http://www.nintendo.com/systems/gcn/gcn_specs.jsp. -
Very cool
REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 20, 2001 - Young wizard Harry Potter may have worked box office magic over the weekend, but his potion of profitability actually was trumped by the powerful new NINTENDO GAMECUBE video game system. Movie industry sources put ticket receipts for the three-day opening weekend of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at $93.5 million. But combined U.S. retail revenues for NINTENDO GAMECUBE (including hardware systems, games and accessories) reached more than $98 million in just its first single day of availability on Sunday, November 18.
Found here. -
Re:I dunno about the gross weight, but...
I can't find any definitive answers on exactly how much a Gamecube weighs (although one would think it would be here if anywhere), so I'll pretend 2 pounds. 2 pounds per unit times 850,000 units equals 1,700,000 pounds, or 850 tons. So maybe the article should have come from the they-musta-made-850-tons-of-the-things dept.

Do your research
[from the article]:
"By contrast, both Sony and Microsoft are positioning their boxes as the foundation for home entertainment systems. The Xbox has a built-in hard drive and high-speed Internet port, and the PlayStation 2 will soon have both through external adapters... Nintendo wanted to keep the GameCube price low and keep the audience focused on the games, analysts said."
The Gamecube _does_ have add-on components for dial-up and broadband connectivity. I think it's smart to have these features as an add-on for everyone who may/not want a wired box. This has been announced for some time now:

Re:Very "clever"...
Yeah, right. Microsoft will put those other tiny companies right out of business. Which would be bad because, you know, Sony would never try to be a huge control-freak media monopoly.
By the way, where did you hear that Microsoft isn't getting royalties from third-party Xbox games? Or is that just your own conspiracy theory? -
It just doesn't hit the mark
A PDA Like this looks like it could be a real hoot to play with, but I still don't think it compares with the Palm Pilot. And it doesn't seem powerful enough to be the kind of Linux toy that I really want. And these things are never going to reach the price/performance ratio of something like a Gameboy. That is what I would really like is something around the price of a gameboy that runs linux and lets me write fairly simple games for. Or how about something about the size of a tomigachi that you could write games for and easily download them over a serial cable. And maybe access that serial cable from the games so you could interconnect them. Is there something like that available?

RIAA and Nintendo: "Fair use == piracy"
How can they look for fair use
They'll look for what turns out to be fair use and just ass-u-me it's piracy. Nintendo follows the same policy, assuming that even programs that you yourself wrote for NES or GBA hardware violate Nintendo's copyright.
-
I wholeheartedly recommend GBA
The Game Boy Advance and Color (especially) are inexpensive and very well documented. The GBA has an ARM processor
I can speak from experience. GBA is a joy to program for; it's much like programming an MS-DOS PC in C, as once you get your libraries done, everything else is pretty smooth. Start here for tools and documentation, and go here for hardware, specifically the MBV2 cable (load 256 KB programs directly into GBA's RAM) and the Flash Linker (load up to 128 Mbit (16 MB) programs into a flash cartridge). However, try to buy them sooner rather than later, as Nintendo will try to sue the makers out of existence, claiming that the devices are suitable "only for piracy" and ignoring the homebrew development scene.

Re:the real drag is...Actually, upon further inspection, sports games are going to PS2 and Xbox, not currently announced for GameCube. It looks like this round, they all go Dreamcast, plus NFL2K2 and NBA2K2 on Xbox and PS2.
Actually, Visual Concepts (the Sega Sports crew) has announced support for Gamecube. Here's the article.
My guess is that VC held off on announcing gamecube support because they are working so hard on finishing their Dreamcast stuff (Tennis 2k2 yet to come) and PS2 library (that ineptly designed beast.)
The Gamecube will have its first online game in December when Phantasy Star Online is released. PS2 and Xbox's online plans are still so much vapor at this point.

Perfect Dark is as expensive as PC games
When you say "it has been said," what you mean to say is "I have said, over and over and over."
No, I refer to a specific comment made here a few stories back, which I can't find at the moment because Slashdot's search seems to be broken.
Non-Miyamoto Zelda is not Zelda
You got that right; bad gameplay and buggy code puts the 'blo' in a popular imitator.
Let us be clear: when a poster says, "It doesn't have Zelda, Metroid, Perfect Dark, etc.," he or she is not talking about trademarks. It is a matter of preference in design teams and fundamental vision behind the projects.
True; metroid, z3, and pretty much everything by Rareware rock. But moms still have whiny kids who want their Pokemon regardless of how bad the gameplay is (not counting the GB titles but rather the merchandising, which is all based on the $#!++y TV show). As Pikachu says: "BEAT THE JEW!"
You mentioned Perfect Dark. Good game, but expensive, as it costs nearly $800 to enjoy fully: $50 for Perfect Dark, $100 for an N64 to play it on, $40 for a RAM expansion pack (required for all modes except a couple 2P deathmatch levels), $90 for 3 extra controllers, $30 for Perfect Dark for Game Boy Color (required to unlock some PD features), $70 for a Game Boy Color system to play it on, $50 for a Game Boy Camera to create face textures, $50 for a Transfer Pak to copy the textures to the game (nintendo says the msrp for the Transfer Pak by itself is $20, but I havent see Transfer Paks in stores apart from the Pokemon Stadium 1 bundle), and at least $300 for a TV large enough to fit a 4-player split screen. You can get an entry-level PC with Quake III Arena and 1000 hours of AOL(tw) for that price.
But what do you know about games? How can anyone who knows what he's talking about associate a serious simulation like Bushido Blade with Soul Caliber?
I gave them as examples of swordfighting games. I should have just mentioned the souledge series without bringing up Bushido.

Mmmm-hmmm. Acutalyy, the whole thing sounds rather exciting. I'm still getting a GameCube, though. Go Nintendo!
-
Re:But then again ...
I tend to agree downloading roms is a logical way for most of us to get our old games off of that hard medium onto our current machines. After all, fair use, right?
According to Nintendo, wrong. I was at their website yesterday, and it turns out that fair use doesn't apply to Nintendo games... no backups, no "archival" copies, no nothing. http://www.nintendo.com/corp/faqs/legal.html
I don't agree with everything they say there... there are perfectly legal ROMs: the ones people write themselves. I've been thinking a while about how cool it would be to write my own and put it on a cartridge (there's a HOWTO abou tit somewhere). Complete API set for you to develop on...

700,000 units at launch
The same story appeared earlier today on this Register article, where it is mentioned that Nintendo plans on having 700,000 'Cubes ready for launch, instead of 500,000. In fact, Nintendo plays this up in this announcement on their web site, while skillfully avoiding mentioning the delay.

Copyrights on ROMs(Note: In this discussion, I use "ROMs" to mean "software binaries in any of the common formats used for ROM images.")
It says (at Nintendo's site): Are all Nintendo ROMS on the Internet Illegal?
The exact text of a listed question and answer:
"Does Nintendo Think Emulation Companies Promote Piracy? Why?" Yes. The only purpose of Nintendo video game emulators are to play illegal copied games from the Internet.
(Emphasis added by yerricde.) Nintendo is implying that programs that emulate Nintendo game consoles can emulate only proprietary software not licensed for redistribution. For example, the 4 kilobyte Game Genie ROM is free(beer)ware, and many popular emulators can handle Game Genie format patches. (Ignore for a moment the fact that Nintendo did not authorize the Game Genie patcher.)They are saying that pirating THEIR software is illegal, which, well, it is.
According to Nintendo's legal page, Nintendo is hiding behind a mask work[?] copyright on the semiconductor ROM chips that contain game software. A mask work copyright does not permit backups except for fair-use reverse engineering, which in the NES's case requires you to be familiar with 6502 assembly language. After the ten-year term of mask work copyright expires (thank goodness Sonny Bono[?] never got to this one), a piece of software on a semiconductor becomes the same as any other piece of software, subject to the full limitations on exclusive monopolies embodied in the fair use and backup exemptions.
See my Everything writeup on 'mask work' for more information and U.S. Code citations.

Its actually pretty tiny
While those photos can't really give you a perspective on it, this page helps by putting a gbc and n64 next to it for comparison.

GCN _is_ the new Sega console
Personally i am looking forward to the new SEGA console much better.
Sega is developing for Game Boy Advance and PlayStation 2 and is expected to sign up as a developer on the Nintendo GameCube.
The Sega Genesis's 68000 CPU was made by Motorola, who would later work with IBM on the PowerPC design. Macintosh and Amiga computers started out on 68K and ended up on PPC. GameCube has an IBM PowerPC Gekko processor. See the connection?
My biggest problem with nintendo is its policy against roms: "The only purpose of Nintendo video game emulators are to play illegal copied games from the Internet." Bullshit. Ever heard of open-source roms such as GNOME vs. KDE Bingo?

Abandonware eats into "classics" resale revenue
wouldn't it be refreshing if Midway took a clear stance on OK'ing the use of its ROM images for MAME and other emulators?
It would eat into Midway's ability to sell classic games and future games starring the characters. For example, if you can play Mortal Kombat 3 on a common emulator (MK3's board was essentially a PSX, and pixel-perfect Ultimate MK3 was released for N64 as MK Trilogy), why buy Mortal Kombat 6? It's the same reason console makers don't free their software.

Intel isn't making the GameCube CPUs....
IBM does, using a form of the PowerPC processor they call 'Gecko'(see here). It's the x-box that uses Intel chips

You gotta love Nintendo...
This will probably be said several times here, but I'll say it anyway. Nintendo may not have the highest game count, but the games they do have are always great with good replay value. Take F-Zero for instance, I was considering buy a SNES from eBay just to play this game again (and a few others). For the GB Advance, they just made it portable (F-Zero : Maximum Velocity or something like that). A game that is what, 10 years old? They didn't have to spice it up or add guns and blood, they just shrunk it down for their new system. That's why Nintendo rules.
Anyway, for some good eye candy (both GBA and Game Cube), check out Nintendo's E3 site:

Re:It *IS* available in the US!
You're an idiot. It's selling for $99, starting on June 11.

Uhh...no?
I don't see how this news is astonishing and breakthrough...our emulation archive has Boycott Advance builds as far back as February...not to mention none of the released GBA emulators can do anything other than play demos.
Furthermore, the authors didn't just guess how it works...the schematics and such were leaked long, long ago. Since the Japanese release, emulators have improved, but since the US release hasn't happened yet, they're still not capable of any decent commercial emulation.
Now, since GBA emulation received such huge mainstream attention via /., I wouldn't be surprised if the IDSA and/or Nintendo go after it and try to pull some nonsense with the DMCA (probably won't work because it wasn't reverse engineered...the details were released) or contract out some evil h4x0r to send an EMP into the authors' houses. Whether they succeed or not, they still will have achieved their goal by implanting the thought in everyones' mind...."GBA emulation is bad mmm'kay, and we can get sued".
The more important people in "the scene" tend to ask that you use emulation to relive old experiences on systems that are no longer being developed or have long been broken...so...if you're insistant upon GBA emulation, use the "try before you buy" method. If you like it, Nintendo deserves your money.
