Re:Telus DSL _SUCKS_
I shouldn't reply to an AC flamebait post, but...
Telus certainly has had tech problems, especially when Telus and BC Tel were combining... There were lots of outages and tech support got a bit hellish there. And they have this stupid one-number tech support policy that is supposed to be helpful (you can get tech support in BC or Alberta on the same number) but is a serious pain for those of us trying to manage businesses with branches in both provinces.
But Telus is, compared to most tech suppliers that I've worked with, not bad at all. They rarely hassle me if I have some serious tech problems. They NEVER EVER have multi-hour holds. Usually 3-5 minutes. You must have been calling an airline's air miles line. They boost me to "level 2" with one call, and when you've got the magic level 2 key, you don't wait on the phone and they queue you to get to-your-door service on a pretty tight timeline. The most annoying thing is that they often have to send someone out to discover what I've been telling them all along -- it's not MY problem, it's YOURS.
Their pricing is good, too. Most of the (western) branches of the company that I put on DSL are paying residential rates, even though Telus knows they're businesses. Other provinces have to pay Mafia-extortion rates for business DSL, which usually is the same service as Telus' residential, just with a different label.
And as for the whole DHCP thing -- My static machines have their IPs hard-coded into them. They don't even ask Telus anymore. Seems to work fine. My "dynamic" machines almost never change their addresses, by the way. That could be considered a bug in Telus' system, but it's very nice for me as a "power user"... When used with a service like no-ip.com, I can get a low-maintenance solution without paying for "static" IPs.
Now, Bell out in Ontario -- there's a nightmare. What's up with the virtual network card and the dialler you have to run every time you restart the computer!? And they charge the same price for ONE business DYNAMIC IP that Telus charges for TWO STATIC ones.

Take off every zig
The letter Ø looks almost like how some computer systems draw a zero. A Zero-Wing, or "Zig" for short, looks like the craft pictured on the cover of this book.

Re:I agree completely.
Found one! It was made 8/19/91, doesn't have drainage channels, but it DOES have the quick-connect, but it's missing the F1 and left-shift keys. It was labelled as $3.99, but my grandmother bought it, so she got a 10% senior discount, and then we talked the cashier at Goodwill into selling it to us for 99 cents (plus 7 cents tax) because of the missing keys!
Pictures before I've taken any crap off (VERY LARGE, may not be uploaded yet because I'm not at home and I've only got a 56K here):

Do it yourself.
Consider hosting it yourself. It's pretty easy with a Consider hosting it yourself. It's pretty easy with a Linux
distribution like e-Smith (now SME
Server), and can be done on a broadband connection (depending on your
TOS) without a static IP if you use an outfit like No-ip. You could also pony up
the money for a business-class line and have even less concerns with
having your service cut off. It's more expensive (I pay
$250/month for 1Mb/s SDSL, but the benefits are certainly there.
Really -- be your own webmaster. -

Here's what's wrong with MP3
I must admit i do not understand what is wrong with Zipped Wave Files!?!?! (or maybe even mp3?)
Nothing's wrong with zipped wave files, but here's what's wrong with MP3s. -
My band(s)
Our approach has been one in which we blatantly give away our music. Any user can download complete songs off our website. All of our music is available from our first, crappy recordings to our new and still crappy recordings. We focus our money making operation on live Gigs. Heck we give away free CDRs of our music to people who ask for it, and it says so on the website.
One thing which has really struck me with the (hopefully) emminent demise of the recording industry, as we know it, will be the return to local, community based live venues for musical groups. The playing field has begun to level itself, and I don't think there needs to be a necessary effort to control it. In fact it's the control that huge conglomerates have attempted to gain that has crushed the industry in the first place.
As a band we plan to dive head-first into the free music scene. Seeing as though we are first and foremost a live band, our recordings are nowhere near as exciting as a live performance. But when push comes to shove, if you want to carry around some bellyrash in your portable mp3 player, you are more than welcome to without our express written consent.
One way in which the recording industry has everyone trapped is no different that the consistent /. theme of Microsoft(tm) vs. the world. Quality will always stand over quantity even if the majority of persons out there don't even know where to look for quality because quantity has blinded their sight.

Re:Online scans of the Voynich manuscriptGee, it has pr0n also!
Seriously, it appears to be related to a womans monthly cycle. The entire manuscript could relate to reproduction, survival, the seasons, etc.
Could it be the user manual for Stonehenge or one of it's equivalents?

Re:Hosting Myself???Here are some possibilities:
Domain Direct: DNS registry with free mail. They give you 1 POP mailbox and 5 forwarding addresses. One nice thing is that they provide catch-alls, i.e., all mail addressed to anything@yourdomain.com can be captured to your POP account. I use this with Fetchmail on my Linux box to create individual accounts for all my family members. One drawback, the POP quota is only 5 MB so I have to poll frequently. Another is that fetchmail with POP can't handle BCCs correctly, so this is not too good for mailing lists.
DirectNIC: Also offers domain registry services as well as email. DNS is cheaper, mailboxes cost a bit more. A friend who doesn't need email uses this and has no complaints.
No-IP
: These guys also provide free DNS under the no-ip.com domain (and a few others). They can host your domain and give you a backup MX capability. More expensive than the other two but probably more full-featured if you can host your own SMTP server.

Perl 6As a perl scripter, I should probably keep up on perl development. A few `features' I hope I find in Perl 6 are:
Threading - MP3::Napster, a popular module written by Lincoln Stein requires a threaded perl interpreter; I happen to use this module for my project (spam, spam [grin]).
More perl ports - I would like to see perl ported to PalmOS; some nodes on PerlMonks reveal that there is a lot of interest in this; Although I sometimes wish they would take a look at the projects on handhelds.org.
Dusk begins to realize that he is ranting....
Anyway, I am sure that I will be pleased with the results; Saint Larry will not let us down
