Re:Mozilla Suite
How about people who think it's just plain stupid that you have to install a bunch of extensions and go making lots of changes in about:config just to get FireFox usable?
Oh you ain't joking there, bucko.
Firefox out of the box is a fricking mess. For just ONE example, tabbed browsing is broken, plain and simple, without at least two extensions.
I'm sorry... I understand the "philosophy" of a "back to basics" browser with only the bare essentials. I grok that. Really. I do.
But this is part of Firefox's core functionality (tabbed browsing, that is), and if you're going to make it that way, it should WORK CORRECTLY without having to resort to one or more extensions to make it behave in a consistent, sane manner.
You know what my biggest bitch is about Firefox though?
It's a petty one, but it's legit.
Back on their 0.8 release, it allowed you to hot-switch themes, but it was buggy, and caused goofy things to happen to your toolbars if you didn't restart the whole browser after switching themes.
Their response to that? Rather than fix the buggy theme-switching, they just force a restart of the browser.
What a copout.
I mean come ON, guys... even Opera can manage switching themes without having to restart the browser, and up until very recently, Opera was a flaky POS on most of my machines.
I want to love Firefox. I really do. But they make it so hard. -
Re:My favorite reason
I love font-resizing too, but I actually prefer the way Opera does it. Opera resizes the images and tables as well, so that resizing maintains the page layout.

Re:Queue Apple Apologists in 3... 2...To a point. Clearly had the patent case gone differently I bet Apple would have done the UI differently.
I'm not sure what you mean, but Apple vs Microsoft was a copyright case, not a patent case.
I'd note one big patent UI precedence though - Adobe's patents for movable tabs that one sees in say Photoshop but never in non-Adobe products.
Broad software patents are not valid in most parts of the world. I note that Opera - a European browser contains movable tabs.
From the linked article:Change the order of the tabs by dragging and dropping them on the page bar.
I have not used adobe products for some time, so am not sure if this is the same thing. -
Re:Where's my bittorrent:// ?

Re:Too many IE users to not work around IE bugs.
Some people may not have the option to install software.
Other than people surfing the Internet in a public library, should these people be viewing entertainment web sites on company time anyway?
Some people may not have a broadband connection so downloading Firefox may take too long to be practical.
Firefox Setup is 4.7 MB. Most dial-up Internet connections are v.90 or v.92, which can download a file that size in 20 minutes. How is that impractical?
I do not know but is there a standard compliant browser available for WINCE and Palm devices? I know that WINCE has IE.
Opera for Mobile is out now on all these phones, and a port of Mozilla to handheld devices is being worked on (see Minimo roadmap).

Re:Never had a reason to use Opera
I hadn't touched Opera after giving Opera 5 a whirl but with the offer of free registration I thought I would give the new one a go. I installed it with ease but using it was a different matter. This is what Opera had to say on the issue of an unsupported proxy authentication method. What a joke. I'll stick to Firefox thanks.

Re:About time
I'll bite. Why pay? Well, if you're one of the smelly's then obviously all software should be free.
However if you want to know why some people feel it worthwhile to pay a company for their product, then I have two reasons:
First, Opera has given me years of painless browsing on FreeBSD since back in the days when the only alternative was the hideously unstable Netscape 4. Gone were the days of "rm -f ~/.netscape/lock && netscape" and in were the days of saved sessions, mouse gestures, and tabbed browsing, not to mention blistering speed. Firefox has only been as usable for a relatively short time. Yes java was a pain, but that was as much FreeBSD related as it was Opera related.
Second, I wept tears of laughter when they released the "Bork" edition of Opera.
For either reason, I would have happily paid for it; except I don't have a credit card and so they've collected ad revenue instead.
I can understand people who switched from IE when Firefox not seeing the point. I suspect however that the number of people who switched from Opera to Firefox is much lower. -
Happy B-Day Opera! + Another Way To Get Opera Free
I've been using Opera for probably 4 years now, and couldn't be happier. IMO, Opera has been (and still is) well worth the price. Obviously I'm not alone as many other people also purchase Opera.
:P
Though, for those of you who run websites, blogs, or whatever there is another way for you to get Opera for free. And that is simply by sending 250 referrals to Opera. So if you miss out on the birthday party, you want to look into that.
I look forward to Opera's 20th birthday and beyond! -

Slash-dud
One thing the article steps around is the fact that many people like to use their computer for games. In that respect, the availability of Windows titles DOES dwarf Linux availability. So this, a sarcastic and biased rant about Linux being better than Windows, is headline news, whereas a story involving Opera turning 10 years old today and giving away its desktop browser licenses (happening NOW) is rejected by the

You mean "Opera"?
"In fact, if I were Google, I would be working on Google Browser. Then they could deliver ads whenever someone was browsing the Internet!"
You mean Opera? That's what it does. Serves Google ads as soon as you open the browser, and then for each page you visit. -

Re:Article Text
If you tried to use keyboard navigation in Opera, you probably know it still has a long way to go. I did a hack to add numbered links which helps somewhat. But the issue is still mainly those pesky DHTML pull-down menus and other such trickery.

It might not be ff's fault
If you see the "Send this error to microsoft", it is most likely not Opera b0rking, but Windows Media Player. Try upgrading or reinstalling WMP.
On a sidenote, opera does b0rk :) -

Re:Whining?
And when, pray tell, has Opera Software "whined"?
They whine all the time. The CEO whined about Opera being undercounted and Firefox overcounted in the stats. They whined (and borked!, and apparently sued!!) when Microsoft websites sent them broken code. They whined when Apple came out with Safari, and made noises like they wouldn't continue developing Opera on the Mac because of unfair competition. And that's just the company itself. Don't even get me started on how Opera's users whine (Hey, Opera had that feature first! They stole it from us!). Damn, I already got started.
-
Necessary evil...
Thing is, while Opera can render pages "designed for IE" just fine, a lot of sites still refuse to load if the browser's not IE. Nevermind sites like Hotmail, which deliver purposedly broken CSS if the browser detected is Opera - making the page look funny or disabling functionality like purging of the spam mail folder.
Opera makes it easy to change the browser identification (via "Quick preferences"), but still, it can be annoying. Specially for non-technical users. -
Sparked in part by Eric Meyer? In the past few days Eric Meyer, CSS guru and general cool guy, released a version 1.1 of his wondeful S5 presentation system. Right afterwards a part-time employee of Opera Software posted a rant on his weblog bitching that Eric gives Opera the "cold shoulder" and questioning S5's status as being cross-browser compatible. As Eric says in a follow-up blog on the topic
Lying about S5's cross-browser nature? Giving Opera the cold shoulder? Utterly wrong on both counts. I've done everything I can to make sure Opera is still at this particular table.
As a test Eric disabled the Opera-validation code, changed Opera to properly identify itself and ran the default S5 slideshow...Everything worked just fine except for two things. One, the browser window had a vertical scroll bar for no apparent reason. Two, the controls were nowhere to be found, either by hovering over where they're supposed to be or using the "C" key to toggle them.
So is it possible that Opera took this as a slap in the face and maybe are starting to change their opinion of their place in the world, i.e. "if I can't easily detect your browser I can't begin to fix my code"? Are they trying to stand up against the PR machine that Firefox has behind it to say that they're still in the running, and maybe also make life easier for web developers who'll finally be able to easily identify their browser?
No matter what the reasons, its a good decision IMHO.
Damien -
Re:Screwed both ways
gah, they *already do*!
They've always had Opera and the version in the useragent string - they just have the MSIE bit in there as well.
this fools the lame IE-only stuff, but lets any sensible software detect that really it is Opera.

Re:I liked Internet Explorer 7 the first time...
Interesting.
Left just as Firefox came on the scene.
Additionally Opera has been debatably more polished than IE for most of its existence.
I highly recommend you try some of the other browsers. Aside from the fact that you may realize just how polished some of the other browsers are you will also gain the benfit of getting familiar with IE7 before its even out!
