Debian is dying
Debian is Slow, Worse, Expensive
Open source may be good, but there is one example that sticks out like a sore thumb as a problem with open source. Debian gnu/Linux. It is offically the Worst Linux Distribution ever made.
First of all, Debian has the most out of date software packages of any major mainstream distros. Even in the unstable version, is KDE 2.2 and Gnome 2.0, with Xfree86 4.1 (A version that really sucks). There are literally years that pass between each update of Debian.
Secondly, its a pain in the goatse to set up, first of all, you are forced to use Kernel 2.2, which is horribly hacked with "backports" to get any use on any modern machine (Read, made after 1999). Good luck memorizing all the *.ko files in /lib/modules, as you are going to need it.
Configuring XFree86 is hell! If you don't have a Thick X11 orilley book, and a list of your horizontal sync values from your monitor's intruction manual (if you even have one), BOOM! There goes your monitor.
Even then, good luck getting anything over 640x480@16 colours.
The most common response to help questions on the Debian mailing list is "n00b, READ THE FUCKING MANUAL, you idiot, go back to WINDOWS XP if you can't learn to use dselect", true too, search the archives if you think I'm lying. Other distros give you comprehensive PRINTED MANUALS, PHONE SUPPPORT and/or freindly forums where repling RTFM gets you banned!
Debians support for any decent hardware, including USB mice, scanners, Sound cards, heck even Serial devices struggle. If you can even get 80x25 text mode with PS/2 input devices you are really lucky.
Apt-get has many flaws. First of all it uses a non standard package format (the rest of the world uses RPM, deprecate the DEB format!), has broken respetories, and out of date software to install. All this combined with the kludgey dselect user interface make package management a nightmare.
And if you think I'm joking about this, find out why THOUSANDS of Debian users are switching to REAL distributions Debian is falling to pieces, if it is to survive any market share it will be through its superior forks (Xandros, Lindows, K/G-noppix) and unoffical package respetories.
Of course, while all this is going on, the only thing the Debian maintainers do is argue about politics on the mailing lists. The distribution decays while its creators argue over inane details like software licensing and the virtues of Marxism. Please! Spare me the political rhetoric and just give me a working distro!
Don't get me wrong, I love Linux, and I'm happily using distros such as Mandrake, SuSE, Gentoo and Fedora. But I'm sick to death of zealots that push obsolete Distros on me EVERY FREAKING TIME linux is mentioned. I'm speaking from real world experiance here. -
Plaigarizing... OSNews?
Seems kind of odd that someone submitted a news story that is an exact copy of an OSNews one. And it is sad that it made it to the front page.
Well hey, good way to get free karma. -

Ok. I am really getting tired of Slashdot reposting the crap rag OSNEWS on here. Please, PLEASE stop "editors". I don't know which of you has a fetish for Eugenia Loli, but this is supposed to be a Nerds site, not a technically impaired idiot site. Please, I implore you, please, STOP RE-POSTING OSNews *Crap* here. Here stuff is devoid of technical cross examinations, rife with conjecture and poor spelling and grammar, and she does what has long been disallowed here, the censoring of Anonymous Cowards. It is bad enough Slashdot isn't critically edited or reviewed, but in the absence of recourse by a commenting public free from censorship and suppression, OSNews is a totalitarian one way street. Please consider that she is likely to be getting kickback to review and announce things, and with her one way system, she could very well be lying to suit the needs of her underwriters without having recourse.

Eugenia Loli needs to exposed. I will post 3 articles that show how fascist the Greeks can be, and that people like Eugenia perpetrate. Then I will cover My Big Fat Greek Wedding, with Fat being the operative word. Then some random Eugenia quotes. I hate you Eugenia, for being a fascist at OSNEWS. Re:The one "feature" that holds me back
So, as I understand it, you should be able to load Sunbird into Thunderbird as an extension.
And that's definitely good enough, as long as the integration is as simple as running a simple setup program. We definitely don't want to force users to hook it together manually.
The sad state of affairs in this area is very disheartening. We do have one complete, polished PIM suite (Evolution) and one that's shaping up to be just as good (Kontakt) but this is one area where we need something cross-platform, because most organizations have multiple desktop OS's around, and they all have to interoperate. What do you do when you want a PIM suite that runs everywhere? Well, there's Glow, but it's only at its beginning stages of development, and it's subject to Sun's stubborn refusal to fontconfig-ize Java so the display will look like crap for a long time. There's a project to connect Outlook to open source, and I hope they manage to pull it off, but this is Microsoft's home turf so it'll be an uphill battle.
Firebird and Sunbird are the free world's best hope for an open source, cross-platform, professional-quality PIM suite. That's the one that we'll hook up the open source groupware servers to. Why aren't IBM, Sun, Novell/Ximian/SuSE, et al pouring resources into this? Outlook must be taken down. -

"Sam Hiser writes"? Huh. More like "Sam Hiser cuts and pastes". The story submission is a direct rip-off of Eugenia Loli-Queru's story on OSNews.
To be fair to Sam, he may have noted this in his submission and the editor may have neglected to mention that Slashdot is trailing OSNews on this story. Either way, I think credit should be given to Eugenia and OSNews for writing the blurb if not for breaking the story. -

Re:OK... good
many of us allow a binary Nvidia module, without knowing how good (usually) or bad (sometimes) it might be.
The difference is, of course, that the Nvidia module is written specifically for the Linux kernel.
See what Alexandre Julliard has to say about Windows DLLs.. would you really want this? -
Interface issues...
This sorta goes along with JaniceFury's comment on this article...
What's with the various shades of gray in the interface? Doesn't that make it difficult for color blind folks to use the software?
Also, why are there [at least] 5 different locations one has to go to for various preferences. And why do some preferences show up in various preferences locations? Mouse and Printers appear in two different sections. Go take a look at Windows and Mac OS and notice that ALL of the preferences / control panels are located in ONE PLACE.
One last nit to pick. What's with the various styles of icons? Some are 3D-ish some are just plane 2D, etc. It looks like there were 4 or 5 different artists making icons for various preferences / apps, with no consistency in their styles. It looks like everything was just sorta tossed together. -
is anybody else
wondering why they decided to show a screenshot of multiple error messages?

Something interesting I noticed.
One of the screenshots in the article ( http://img.osnews.com/img/5286/jds7.png ) is a picture of a few different applications running on JDS, and I thought it was interesting that every single one of the applications in the shot rendered menus differently.
Different colors, different fonts, different metrics and text sizes, even different semantics for shortcuts (one used 'C' for ctrl, another used Ctrl, etc.) -
GNOME Armageddonthis is the sixth text revision done on 04-11-2002.
dear reader the gnome armageddon has started,
first of all i want to clarify that this text was meant to be a source of information otherwise i wouldn't have spent so much time into writing it. belive me it took me a couple of days writing this text in a foreign language. even if you don't care at all for gnome, you may find some interesting information within this text that you like to read. please try to understand my points even if it's hard sometimes, otherwise you wake up one day and feel the need to switch to a different operating system.
on the following lines i'm trying to give you a little insight of the gnome community. the things that are going on in the back, the information that could be worth talking and thinking about.
many of us like the gnome desktop and some of us were following it since the beginning. gnome is a promising project because it's mostly written in C, easy to use, configurable and therefore fits perfectly into the philosophy of u*nix. only to name some of its advantages.
unfortunately these advantages changed with the recently new released version of gnome. the core development team somehow got the idea of targeting gnome to a complete different direction of users. the so called corporate desktop user. in other words they're targeting people that aren't familiar or experienced with desktop environments. usually business oriented people who are willing to pay money for getting gnome on their computers.
having this new target in mind, the core development team mostly under contract by companies like redhat, ximian and sun decided to simplify the desktop as much as even possible by removing all its flexibility in favor of an easy clean simple interface to not confuse their new possible customers. so far the idea of a clean easy to use desktop is honourable.
some of the new ideas, features and implementations such as gconf, an evil windows registry like system, new ordering of buttons and dialogs, the removal of 90%-95% of all visible preferences from the control center and applications, the new direction that gnome leads and the attitude of the core development team made a lot of users really unhappy. these are only a couple of examples and the list can easily be expanded but for now this is enough. now let me try to get deeper into these aspects.
you may imagine that users got really frustrated because their beloved gnome desktop matured into something they didn't want. during the time, the frustration of a not less amount of people increased. more, more and more emails arrived on the gnome mailinglists where users tried to explain their concerns, frustrations and the leading target of GNOME.
but the core development team of gnome don't give a damn about what their users are thinking or wanting and most of the time they come up with their standard purl. the reply they give is mostly the same. users should either go and 'file a bug' at bugzilla or the user mails are being turned so far that at the end they sound like being trolls or the user feedback is simply not wanted. whatever happens the answers aren't really satisfying for the user. even constructive feedback isn't appreciated.
if you gonna think about this for a minute then things gonna harden that they are directing into the commercial area. the core development team actually don't care fo

Re:So why should I use SkyOS, and not GNU/Linux?
Actually, there really isn't a great reason to use Sky OS over Linux or BSD... and that's not the point. Sky OS is one of many smaller projects whose primary purpose is to satisfy the hobby needs of the creator... Kind of like where Linux was when Linus decided his schoolwork was too boring.
There are many other examples out there. Contiki, Triangle Os, and many others.
There are also Open Source, commercial, and potentially useful hobbyist systems out there. However, if you are looking for the most comprehensive, useful desktop suite, look elsewhere. All of these Os's are unique and well-intentioned, but very few are actually practical.
Practicality is not the point. Curiosity is the point. What would a different implementation look like? What if all the graphics subsystems were contained in the kernel? How would a real-time OS feel to the user? These questions can't be answered by just releasing a new X theme, and there aren't very many people curious enough to find out.
These people are true geeks... Software for software's sake. Kudos to you all.

Re:Honest Question
I suppose the real answer is "it depends, but generally yes." I don't use kernel preemptibility, and it sure seems "feels" faster -- which is of course such a rambling description that it's difficult to qualify.
I'll point you to the response I made here:
http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=5208&off set=29&rows=30
(Mine's #29.) Yes, I know it's much more so the combination of XFS and mm than it is just mm. I should amend that comment... -
The sound you hear.
Is a hoard of Debian Zealots trying to convince you to switch. I'm here to pre-empt them.
First of all, Debian has the most out of date software packages of any major mainstream distros. Even in the unstable version, is KDE 2.2 and Gnome 2.0, with Xfree86 4.1 (A version that really sucks).
Debian has ZERO support for any decent hardware, including USB mice, scanners, Sound cards, heck even Serial devices struggle. If you can even get 80x25 text mode with PS/2 input devices you are really lucky. With Mandrake 9.2, i can just plug in my Digital camera, and a Icon appears on my desktop, it just works. With Debian, i would have to recompile my kernel, mount the device using a obscure usb module, and even then, there is no guareentee that an icon will appear on my desktop, I will have to mount it from the command line.
Apt-get has many flaws. First of all it uses a non standard package format (the rest of the world uses RPM, deprecate the DEB format!), has broken respetories, and out of date software to install.
And if you think I'm joking about this, find out why THOUSANDS of Debian users are switching to REAL distributions Debian is falling to pieces, if it is to survive any market share it will be through its superior forks (Xandros, Lindows, K/G-noppix) and unoffical package respetories.
Don't get me wrong, I love Linux, and I'm happily using distros such as Mandrake, SuSE, Gentoo and Fedora. But I'm sick to death of zealots that push obsolete Distros on me EVERY FREAKING TIME A DISTRO is reviewed. I'm speaking from real world experiance here, My Old packard bell monitor caught fire because of Debian!.

Loli-Queru and US law.
The well known limitations of Fedora's multimedia capabilities plague every linux [sic] distribution. It's not Fedora's fault that US laws suck.
Looking at Loli-Queru's review of Yellow Dog's distribution of GNU/Linux (version 3.0.1) which includes an XMMS that can play MP3s (which probably qualifies in the US as patent infringement), I see that she finds it convenient and nice that XMMS plays MP3s without any additional software:
A nice addition to the system is that XMMS supports mp3s, even if RHL's doesn't. The YDL guys have re-compiled the original XMMS package and its libraries and not the Red Hat SRPM.
It seems to me she either wants to remain ignorant of powerful forces that shape the way in which people must do things (following the law, protesting bad laws) or she genuinely does not understand these forces. I think it's sad that she doesn't acknowledge how much "US laws suck" (to use your words) or what we could do to change the law so we don't have to contend with software patents anymore. She doesn't give any indication that Red Hat was making a strategic choice by not including MP3 software--they did not want to lose their business to a patent infringement lawsuit. More people need to tell users and citizens that stressing convenience over everything is part of the way we get into this mess, not the way we get out.

Task Based Blah Blah
Yes, as demonstrated below Micro$oft's "task based" shit is obviously much better at wasting your time and your screens prescious pixels than Apple could ever hope to.
Here OS News shows how you need a full 1280X1024 window to view a handful of contacts, PLUS another rather large window to actually view one contacts details(note you must actually scroll through this "detail" window to actually see more details than what is shown in the larger, yet still useless window).
While unfortunately you are forced to use Panthers Address Book which only takes up ~590X400px which gives you all the same information as M$ contacts plus more. Not to mention that to actually do a "task" you just fucking DO it instead of start a lame "wizard".
As a double bonus OS X users don't have to view pictures of gay playskool dolls as their contacts portraits. -
Re:I disagree...
Really? You don't think Fedora is a bad desktop? Try this review
Also, search the Fedora mailing list for some users begging Fedora need to be home-user friendly distro. -

Re:Red Hat and Fedora
Then read the other OSNews review which is considerably more positive. Also enlightening.

Re:Red Hat and Fedora
well, at least in the preliminary stages it seems like a lot of the "standard" fedora packages are beta (translation: broken). don't trust me, read the osnews review. very enlightening.

Re:What a shock
She loved Slackware!
Her only major complaint was ALSA having problems with her sound card (hardly Slackware's fault).
Basically, she said it's the ultimate expert's distro. -
Eugenia sure has a LOT of favorite OSes!
Let's see.. in this article, she says:
Red Hat's Linux is still one of my favorite distributions because of one main reason: compatibility with Linux software.
But less than two months ago, in an earlier OSNews article, she said:
Slackware is my new favorite operating system along with FreeBSD, Windows Server 2003 and Mac OS X.
Hmm, no Red Hat in sight. And she even said:
I have tried more than 10+ different Linux distributions in the past 4 years but I never stuck with any. Red Hat/Mandrake/SuSE are too bloated and slow with complex internal structures (however Red Hat evolves faster of the three).
Wow, when's she going to make up her mind? -
My experience with Fedora Core 1 YarrowI honestly can't agree, or disagree for that matter, with the article at osnews since I had severn installed prior to the release of yarrow. However, after upgrading over the severn install (which was painless) to yallow with no problems what so ever, I have been very happy with the speed and stability of the OS. I for one can say that I have had none of the problems that the author of that article had, example being the tar.gz flash player install.
So far very happy with Core 1 (yarrow) release. I'm still a die hard Slackware user, but after using Fedora and Mandrake (mostly for fun and as gaming boxes) I'm impressed with Fedora and it's out of the "ISO" setup.

Good artcle on just that point here
At OSNews.
The summary is that the libraries most people link to are indeed 32 bit. However Panther bests Windows and Linux in having a larger availiable address space per application (4GB). And of course the OS does support more than 4GB of RAM. -
Important! Mac OS X Panther Fries Firewire disks!
This is worese than Mandrake 9.2!
And yes, I know its offtopic, but it is IMPORTANT to know, even if you don't own a Mac, you know you can avoid it. Moderators, don't waste your mod points. -
Important! Mac OS X Panther Fries Firewire disks!

Panther is KNOWNTO FRY FIREWIRE DISKS!
Why hasn't slashdot reported it yet?
Oh yeah, this is slashdot, Apple Zealots and are "switching" Linux zealots. This is much more serious than Mandrake 9.2! -
The Apple Zealotry on this site is out of hand!
Why must all you Zealots bash everything that is not Apple. Come on, Apple stuff is overpriced, Horrible colours, and SLOW!
Take the G5 for example, it was WHIPPED into the mud by The Athlon 64-FX yet you zealots tried to justify their loss when it it is A CLEAR LOSER. Don't mention Virgina Tech either, when someone puts a Athlon 64 cluster together you are going to be hurting.
Anyway, instead of laughing at Mandrake, Windows and Dell, try looking at your own Problems. Panther is DESTROYING firewire drives.
~Anyway, I have recently used a DELL at Work, and it is a very high quality machine. My next machine WILL be a DELL, and notsome 3000 cheese grater.
