It's really not news
So wait -- scamming a scammer out of shipping and taxes is what's novel in this case? No it's not. The P-P-P-Powerbook showed us back in
... May of 2004? Earlier? Good chance it's not the the earliest example either.
http://www.p-p-p-powerbook.com/
So to be clear -- why do I even need to say this? -- I think all the liars, cheats and scammers using the Internet should be stopped. I think it's dubious that vigilantism is necessary, and slightly ambivalent about whether it's appropriate. I'm pretty confident that it's ineffective though. Every time a nigerian gets a tatoo (or sculpts some wood!) at the behest of a bored Westerner that does nearly zero to stop this fraud from happening to others.
Since there is basically no point in scamming scammers but for one's own amusement, I don't think it's justified. You might not like flies, but are you pulling off their wings for fun? Amusing yourself and your Internet buddies at the expense of others doesn't seem terribly defensible.
To reiterate, scamming scammers is not worse than tricking grannies out of their retirement money. Scamming a scammer will not prevent scammers from tricking grannies out of their retirement money, no matter how hilarious it is. -
Again?

Re:Dont screw with these people
Don't forget about the P-P-P-Powerbook. The very active forum member who gave the scammer the fake powerbook suddenly disappeared not to long after the website was made.

I think they're referring to P-p-p-people, otherwise known as the users of the P-p-p-powerbook!

Re:Don't buy that new Mac lappy just yet.
Not too sure what I'd reccommend for a reliable laptop these days - certainly not Apple, Toshiba, HP/Compaq, Acer/Asus (shudder).
Have you tried Anus Laptops? Or maybe a nice P-P-P-Powerbook? -

Maybe this new Power chip can power the P-P-P-Powerbook...

Re:P-P-P-Powerbook
Damn, can't believe nobody's explained this yet. For those who are wondering, check out http://p-p-p-powerbook.com/. Hilarious anecdote of how this guy totally turned the tables and scammed a would-be eBay scammer. The photos of the P-P-P-Powerbook are priceless.

Prevalence of internet cafes to blamep-p-p-powerbook!
An entertaining, revealing read to say the least. I believe the prevalence of internet cafes are to blame. Affords greater anonymity as opposed to doing this from a business or home residence.
As you can discern from my nickname, I like bikes. I often peruse the listings on eBay to see what's out there (I only have two bikes...so far!). There's no shortage of 1-day and 3-day listings that appear to originate from London. They're pure scam listings for very high-end bikes like Pinarello Dogmas, Colnago C-40s and C-50s, and Trek Madones.

Okay, you started it!
I admit, I have nothing to add to this, except:

Re:Where is Ottawa, Ontario, Canada?
Long curious about the origin of this phrase, I did a google search after reading your post. I came across the story of the p-p-p-powerbook and man, that was some funny shit. Thanks for posting your lame-ass leetspeek.

another scam-the-scammer story
Can be found at P-P-P Powerbook.com.
In short, the guy was contacted after he put his iBook up on eBay. He realized it was a scam, and sent the scammer a notebook instead. The forum has pictures from people who lived around the delivery zone, and were actually there when the scammer opened the faked package. Definately worth a read. -

I dunno. This is a "PC". I don't have any spy-ware either.
Hmm, let's see...% uname -mpsrv
Yep, I have a "PC" also. Look it says it right there at the end. In fact, it is a p-p-p- power pc!
Darwin 7.4.0 Darwin Kernel Version 7.4.0: Wed May 12 16:58:24 PDT 2004; root:xnu/xnu-517.7.7.obj~7/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc
No spyware either - unless you count Microsoft Word which sends out packets to your LAN, trying to see if you are running a copy on another computer. I quickly blocked that piece of spyware from being so noisy... -

"Accident"?
I bet this is what happened to the Powerbook
:) -
but.....
Will it install on my P-P-P-Powerbook?
-
Hilarious, but...
While this is a great story, did this guy really need to register p-p-p-powerbook.com for it? People register domains for the stupidest reasons.
Also, what's with the 28 page PDF? What's wrong with just HTML? That alone would cut down his bandwidth usage, especially in light of all the publicity this story is getting.
Yeah, I know, -1 Flamebait. -
Scamming the Scammer
But what about the other direction? One guy found out he was getting scammed by a buyer and so instead of selling him a Powerbook, he sold him a P-P-P-Powerbook.
:) Gotta love it.
