Ever since he mentioned that you don't need to start at the beginning in order to get to a certain stage, i've just felt like it will be a bunch of mini-games, without present decisions being made in the current stage affecting your options in future stages of, what i assume, is the evolution of your creature(s). I have a feeling that the expansion pack he's been working on will be a ton better.

the mouth breathing foofoo coffee denizens of Starbucks.
What are you talking about? I walk past three on my commute through town. Looks like an ordinary mix of people drinking coffee to me.I was dragged into a Starbucks once a couple of years ago.
I haven't been inside one for years myself -- since I live downtown I've no need to join a lineup or sit in a store. But should I enter I don't expect the people I see sitting inside and outside will suddenly mutate.
You really need to get a grip on your elitist fantasies.

Re:The Game is Mediocre (At Best)
Let me be the first to say it's not for you.
The game isn't going to rank as one of my favourites, but I enjoyed it. For $20, I find it really difficult to complain about anything. They even managed to make JRPG combat fun for me again, and I've been jaded with JRPGs for years. -
Re:The ReviewFrom your review: Fruit Fuckers are over-represented. Why did they keep coming up after you wiped out the source? I think this was mostly for the collection aspect. Where else are you going to get parts? Not an excuse, just an observation. As my roommate asked, why is Tycho ALWAYS reading a book? That seems realistic, and part of the humor. Tycho is, in fact, always reading a book. The toilet humor. Fair enough. I don't think there's disproportionately more in the game than in the comic, though.

Fixed it for you....
"No offence to the people at Twitter, and maybe not the people who recently migrated there. But am I alone in being hesitant to welcome people who formerly worked at IBM, et al, and even Google?
Granted, they seem to be more directed at the physical performance of the system, but I see this as somewhat of an inroad to Twitter actually working, thereby requiring me to acknowledge its existence. And I would much rather have some no-name website, where people living in their mother's basements come to tell a world that would rather ignore them that they just had a shit, go under, than sap the life-blood of a decent technology company.
I have no idea what Twitter could be useful for, but I just find having big boys come in and having control over something that's (potentially, and already has been) so useless, uh...kind of boring."
Honestly though, what? They hired some people from real technology companies who might have the first clue of how to do what they should already have been doing. I have only the vaguest idea of what Twitter is, based on this and having checked it out, have had my suspicions confirmed. Call me a curmudgeon, but they just sound like they're trying desperately to survive in a marketplace already brimming with (better) competition by hiring experienced technologists. Seriously, how long before 'phones that can handle Facebook are the norm? -

a little clarification
The way the Kotaku article is worded - and it comes through on the summary is a bit confusing. Basically if the VGChartz esitmate is right they broke a record for earnings. They came in third for number of downloads- and that is what Gabe is talking about when he says "Given that our price point was double..." He means that he is happy they had the third most downloads since their game cost so much more than the others that came before it. He does not say anything about how much they made or make any comparisons regarding income to the other games. In a screencast they did for the game, he even jokes that due to the large initial cost of creating the game, they aren't making any money yet. You can see that video if you scroll to the bottom of this post.

Re:I still don't get it.
If he's popular enough that his work alone could support him, then start a blog and throw a few ads on it. Come up with T-shirts or mugs or something. Perhaps best-of print collections. As far as books (as in novels), people are making a living posting their work online while selling print copies.
That's how online cartoonists do it. See Penny Arcade. Howard Tayler of Schlock Mercenary has been supporting a family for a few years now.

First Hater Alert
When I read the headline, I thought "I wonder how long it's going to take for some fanboy to recommend the iPhone, despite the fact that it doesn't have a keyboard & is inferior for text entry compared to say a blackberry, or even some of the HTC monstrosities."
The iPhone is fine for typing text. And the fully dynamic interface allows for some interesting possibilities for shell control, along with more room for a wider view on the screen. Penny Aracde of course, put it best... "If you find such things unpleasant, then I suggest you develop a taste for forced labor because by the year twenty-twenty all that sneer is going to get you is a slot in the underclass boiling corpses."
Don't be so dismissive until you see what terminal possibilities might arrive with the SDK.
And there you were - right in the first post. Thank you for reaffirming my faith in fanboi nature.

Re:The oldest code in existence:Hi there Mr. Troll! Too cheap to pay the $5 at Kuro5hin,huh? Well, don't you worry. Hey and you'll be happy to know that John Gabriel at Penny Arcade dedicated some of his artwork just for you! Enjoy !
And for those out there who are wondering what I'm talking about, Kuro5hin recently enacted a $5 "membership" fee because they were being buried alive under a tidal wave of racist trolls. They figured that since trolls are generally cheap bastards that the fee would cause the trolls to move on to Digg,Fark, and yes, Slashdot. So don't be surprised if for the next few weeks you see post after post by impotent Nazi loving Teabaggers. Just make fun of them and they'll eventually move onto Digg. -
Re:Sudden outbreak...Nice, if I had a mod points I would give one to you. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/5/9/ is very funny
... still laughing The DRM still only allows three total installs for the lifetime of the game How is this better then constant validation? So if I install it on my Desktop, Laptop and maybe at work ... I would only play it on one computer at a time. Now if one of the machines crashes, I am thinking about my Gaming (win XP) Desktop here, it has become unstable and needs a reload soon .... I would have to beg to get one more install.... keep your game! No. Shut up. You can uninstall the game and get one of your three installs back. Flight Simulator X had a TWO install limit, and after the first time I went over that limit (not knowing about the whole uninstall to get a install back issue), they were more than happy to help me out, no begging needed. Please stop being an idiot, and support the developers for once instead of pressing your unrealistic needs on game companies. This goes with anyone below who agrees with the parent, as well. -
Re:How about?
You don't like their policies or practices then don't fucking buy it.
You need to start thinking like a Suit guy.
Most of them seems to think they have a God given right to sell as many games as their marketing department projected, if they don't meet the projections then it s clearly due to Piracy and weak DRM.
If we don't make sure to tell them why we are boycoting them then we will eventually end up with something like this.

Re:This changed my mind about reading
It's probably just a new initiation rite for the GNAA.
The truly sad thing is, it's shit like this that make people want to throw away the right to anonymity on the Internet. I guess we're stuck with the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory, though. -
Re:Does it run Java?
How cute! An input system that makes texting take 10 times as long as using the keypad.
It's as fast for me as typing on a Blackberry or Treo. I guess some people like you are just slow though and can't handle new things, I guess it's boiling corpses in your future.
Fantastic! I'm sure it works perfectly for Doom RGP and other popular mobile games. Oh and no other mobile phone as decent power and 3D capabilities, the iPhone is way ahead of the competition there.
Look Mr Corpse Boiler, I didn't say it was necessarily ahead of everything (though it certainly is ahead of a lot of Java Mobile platforms)- I just said it had good capabilities.
Then there is the little fact that there are already hundreds of ISV:s developing mobile games using the J2ME platform so that they can easily be ported between different phone models. But they are ofcourse going to give up (relatively) easy portability in favor of designing games for the Apple iPhone uberdevice exclusively.
I've actually done J2ME programming, so I know what can and cannot be done there. I don't see why J2ME game developers would cease writing games, there will still be plenty f market for that. But there's no question that iPhone games will be more visually appealing and have a lot more resolution to operate with, along with having a unique control scheme instead of sometimes laggy buttons.
See, unlike you I realize that just because gaming on the iPhone/iTouch takes off, it doesn't mean the end of other platforms - just the start of a new one. -

Penny Arcade said it best
Anonymity can have some pretty undesirable consequences...
But really. Have you ever read the comment boards on a local or national news site? Trolls and political shitstorms are the rule rather than the exception. Personal insults, extreme racism, and casual death-threats are fairly common as well.
In the end, each thread inevitably turns into a racist tirade, or a debate over gun control, religion, or "the democracts/republicans are killing America"
It's really no surprise that the Washington Post wants to put a damper on this. Although it may sound hard to believe, Slashdot is arguably one of the most effectively moderated large communities on the 'net. -
