Re:Not just Linux
As a certified Internet Lawyer I can advise you that it doesn't apply to FreeBSD. That's right, use Linux and go a federal pound me in the ass prison, or use FreeBSD and stay, well Free.
Hence the name.
Here's an Operating System fud^H^H^Hfact sheet
1) Windows. Expensive. Not FreeBSD. You may BURN in HELL forever if you use it.
2) Linux. Free Unix type OS, unquantifiable risk of prison rape. No strlcat.
3) NetBSD. Let's face it do you really need all those platforms? Why not concentrate on optimising for today's mainstream hardware. My friend Bob installed it on his new box, and it caught fire and burned down his house.
4) OpenBSD. Kick ass security. Theo seems a bit odd. Lags a bit feature and driver wise. There are reports that OpenBSD users may die of untreatable brain cancer.
5) MacOs. Slick. Good for clients. Expensive. You may have to grow a goatee, wear black polo necks. Mac OS users won't accept you as one of them, they will mock your dress sense behind your back.
Face it, FreeBSD is the best choice for every person in the world. Fact. -
Re:Support for scripting languages
But Ruby on Rails is so Web 2.0. All hip people use it to deliver their AJAXified XHTML websites. Is Web 2.0 about TurboGears? Do people socially organize their tagged bookmarks on Spring-powered websites? No, Web 2.0 is not only too hip to be used in conjunction with a "the", it's also powered by Ruby. Because Ruby is the big thing, which it is because it's part of the Web 2.0 hype, which it is because it's the big thing. Ruby is so incredibly more en vogue than Python that I want to make a glorified link list with rounded corners whenever I think about it. You better stay away from me or you might infect me with your 1.0ness.

Electroclutter
Currently, the room I share with my girlfriend has my old Dell (big, ugly black box), which said girlfriend now uses, the stereo speaker system that came with said dell (less big but still quite big, ugly black box), and a giganimous HP printer/scanner/fax/toaster oven that she got as a job perq because her boss was moving to the East Coast.
My office has two 19" monitors and two desktops. The faster one is a big ugly black Dell, and the slower one is an even bigger, uglier, somehow BLACKER Gateway. I actually wouldn't have the monitors there, except if the left one isn't there, I'm constantly one of my coworkers directly in the face. Regardless of the fact that he's a nice chap, I don't want to look at his mug all day, it's unnerving.
Each of these settings has, at one time or another, my Powerbook in them.
Now, I bought a new 20" Intel iMac (yeah I know the MacBooks are Jenna Jameson-sexy, but this is cheaper, slightly faster, and has a large screen, and I'm an artist sometimes), but let's pretend I bought one of those PowerMacs and a 23" Cinema Display. Not only would I have an AWESOMELY HUGE, ugly aluminum box, I would have a gigantic monitor, a DVI KVM switch, yet another ugly black Dell (or, if I built it myself, a big ugly box with no branding), and enough cords to hide more than a few corpses in.
So, yeah, having a little white thing with two cords coming out the back is kind of a boon to me.

Re:not too old
That's why old people like me (age 29) just spend what little spare time we have playing Civilization, occasionally venturing into an RPG or RTS. But I'm not allowed to play RPGs anymore. They suck up too much time. Civ or RTS, you can play for an hour or two and then stop. A good RPG will suck me in. Heck, even a mediocre one will; I can't remember how many hours I wasted on Might and Magic 9.
On the plus side, in a few years my daughter will be old enough to play games with me. Let's here it for Barbie Horse Adventures!. Hey, it beats the hell out of anything pretaining to Dora the Explorer. -
Oblig. penny arcade...

Oh, here it is!
s/House of the Dead/Bloodrayne/;
So far, all his videogame movies are in the IMDB's bottom 100: 18, 36, and 37. I never particularly cared for any of these games but if he screws up Far Cry (which I'm sure he will), I'll probably go Postal in the theater! -
I like GameFaqs and P-A
Personally, I get most of my game info from GameFaqs, which has user reviews and nice overall scoreboards for magazine reviews. The user reviews are sometimes dumb, but you can get a general flavor for a game by looking at the magazine reviews and user reviews. I've still been burned once or twice but at least looking there first can help you avoid the real stinkers.
Also, I love the game info posted at Penny Arcade. Gabe and Tycho have similar tastes in games as I do, so when they love a game it's a pretty safe bet that I'll like it too. -

Not a wireless mouse
If you look at the picture in the article, it sure looks like there's a wire coming out of the mouse.
For a product from Infinium Labs, I'd expect both the keyboard and the mouse to be wireless. Hell, I'd expect the dang thing to READ your friggin' MIND and move itself around FOR you.

Re:Yes, of course it's the end of it
It seems fairly unlikely, unfortunately, that we'll see Mr. Seigenthaler apologising for the lasting harm he's indirectly caused by provoking that reaction over a silly joke making unbelievable claims about him.
Somebody had to say it. He just happens to be the one who was in the right place at the right time.
Although he's somewhat harsher on Wikipedia than I would like, Tycho did a very good job explaining why this whole system (allowing errors, and waiting for someone to correct them) just doesn't work out well:

1) Hot Coffee
2) XBox360 Launch
3) PSP Launch
4) Madden Next Gen
5) Revolution
For reasons, RTFA, but it's pretty bland. #4 turns out to be about bullshots and how the XBox360 game is, apparently, worse than previous generation console versions. The Revolution was covered in the write-up, and the rest are basically self-explanatory. -

Re:Thanks for spoiling the movie
I suppose you've never seen this (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/12/05) as posted above? Seriously man, everyone knows what happens to Kong.
-
Re:Uh, great?
I have a feeling this got posted because of a recent Penny Arcade. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/12/05
In the news post associated with that comic, there is a complaint about how, in this game, you face an unwinnable scenario. Then there's a brief correction posted at the end, that just pretty much says "Oh, I guess there's an alternate ending where Kong doesn't die."
I read that, and was thinking, "What? He doesn't die? What does happen? Does he, in fact, just climb back down?" I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was still wondering about this. ;)
So yeah. Personally, I welcomed this Slashdot post. It's entirely possible, though, that Slashdot wasn't the ideal location for it. -
I am wondering...
...are there actually any experts on He-man ?

Uh... spoiler alert?

Re:Ruby on Rails creeks of immaturity
For example any real enterprise application requires end to end transaction support. Does ActiveRecord handle that? What if the transaction is distributed across systems like mainframe 3270 terminals, couple of web services and some database access? I'm sure doing this in RoR would be much harder and probably take more code than doing it in robust enterprise frameworks like J2EE.
This may come as a shock to you, but most websites don't need a mainframe of 3270 terminals to run. I know, I know, it's as much as a surprise to me as it is to you. I even hear that one can create a commercial website for under a million dollars, these days! What will they think of next? Maybe home users will have websites next!
The point I'm not-so-subtly trying to make is that enterprise-grade, million dollar web applications that handle a kazillion hits a day aren't actually that common. It's true that Rails isn't going to create the next Google, but there are websites out there which don't have to handle hundreds of gigabytes of traffic per day. Ruby isn't designed for the enterprise. It's designed to run small to middle-sized web-applications, such as 43 Things or Penny Arcade. And sites like these make up the majority of the net, whilst web applications suited for "enterprise use" are in a considerable minority.

Re:It must be "beat up on Wikipedia week"
It seems like everyone is jumping on Wikipedia this week. Seriously, who's writing these talking points?
People who are used to being able to write their biased opinionated pieces, choosing which facts to stick to or not, and having their material read by large numbers of people, without having to worry about any criticisms, let alone having to defend their work with discussion and by supplying evidence.
Okay, maybe I'm reading too much into this - but the way in which various people have been attacking Wikipedia makes me wonder whether these people are simply terrified of a system where what they write can be edited by anyone else. They don't know how to deal with that model - so they attack it.
The Penny Arcade [ http://www.penny-arcade.com/2005/12/16 ] had this interesting line: Any persistent idiot can obliterate your contributions. I'll leave aside defending that point (his entire rant is nothing that hasn't been debated far better on Slashdot a million times before) - but I can't help wondering if this rant is due to a bad experience of him entering some information, and getting pissed off when it got reverted, even though it may have been reasonable to revert it (giving the tone of his article, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case).
I've seen the "I edited on Wikipedia and idiots reverted it" plenty of times on Slashdot before, which means nothing without knowing what those edits are. But it wouldn't surprise me if some journalists or self-obsessed bloggers just can't understand the model of someone being able to edit what they write.
Another interesting point is that people are able to attack Wikipedia so easily because its edit history is available for all to see (see also The Register's article - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/12/17/jimmy_wale s_shot_dead_says_wikipedia/ - where they trawled through the history to find a change that was reverted less than a minute later!)
Imagine if the edit history of sites like Wired or The Register were available for all to see - we might find plenty of mistakes and intersting things also. -
